Fishing compared to other DoL

So, why is it that fishing is so much more difficult than mining or logging? Each action takes a lot longer, and a lot of times you won't even get a fish when you wait, or the fish will leave on the first jig. This is even more evident on fieldcraft leves.

Near as I can tell, this is done because of the fishing spots where you can fish infinitely, to stop people from getting tons of SP during fieldcraft leves. So, my proposal is as follows:

Remove the ability to fish at any body of water, and let us only fish at schools of fish. Or, if you don't remove the ability to fish at any water, then at least make schools of fish function similarly to mining and logging points.

As it stands, fishing is more difficult to level than the other two DoL, and this is on top of the drops being not as useful (as there is still no real conclusive data on the benefits of food). Please fix this, there's no reason for fishing to be this bad.

Urthdigger!! I'm not sure I'd like to travel from one fishing location to another in, say, Thanalan. The locations are few and far between. Also, fishing is far more useful than just for food. Many alchemy products (crystals aside) get their mats from fish. Glues, oils, powders, etc. I think a simple solution to your problem might be to increase the yield of fishing slightly, or increase the effectiveness of bait-fish combinations.

I wonder if they did any time trials to balance the running time in mining and botany with the wait and fail time with fishing. I think its just that time goes faster when you are running than just waiting. I know mining takes more time than two battlecrafts and the fishers were ahead of us miners in level gains on xivpro lists so I'm not sure it's really slower.

Still I do wonder why they made fishing different. I know I would feel a little silly moving fishing spots after 3-8 catches. I dont feel silly doing that on mining even though that is just as absurd for a real miner to do.

Well, this is mainly an issue during leves. I'll go an entire leve with only getting one or two fish, it's INSANE. Sure I can get better rates fishing out of leves, but god forbid I actually get any guild marks.

I do know removing the infinite spots entirely would be a bit of a nerf, hence my second suggestion to keep those spots, and instead just make schools of fish (levequests included) use the mining/logging system, and let the infinite spots use the current fishing system.

30 minutes with only 1 or 2 catches? That is insane. That's never happened to me in a fishing leve.

If anything, my problem is the exact opposite. Fishing leves end in just a couple of minutes because I catch all my fish too quickly to get decent SP.

I can think of only a couple situations in which I could go 30 minutes with only 1 or 2 catches:

1) Fatigue. When you get gathering fatigue, your SP numbers don't turn yellow. Instead, you stop being able to catch fish.

2) Using the wrong type of bait. I suspect that this is what's happening with you. Are you using freshwater bait for ocean fishing, or ocean bait for freshwater fishing? Usually, if I got 4 or 5 casts without a bite, I'll check my bait and realize that I forgot to change it to the correct type.

3) Fishing in an area too high for my level. This probably isn't your issue, since you're doing levequests. But if you're a level 10 fisher, and you're fishing at a rank 5 node, you're not going to get any bites.

4) Jig lag.

(It probably goes without saying to make sure that you're using level appropriate gear, and that your gear is repaired.)

I'm using an ash fishing rod, and goby balls. I'm rank 15, and attempted this at Skull Valley and at Bloodshore, so grades 2 and 3.

I really do notice a big difference between being on a leve and not: When I'm not on a leve, fishing is just a bit more annoying than mining/logging. When I am on a leve, my bites just dry up to nothing.

Then I'm totally wrong about using the right type of bait or under-leveled gear. :/ Looks like you're using the right gear and bait. Sorry about that.

I will say that I felt like I got a huge bonus from upgrading to a Willow Fishing Rod. You get about a 40% bonus to gathering and output just by changing from an ash rod to willow. And at level 17, you can upgrade to a pine rod, which is another 30% bonus. (But obviously that might be easier said than done, depending on what you can craft yourself or what's available to buy in the market wards.)

And if you're just level 15, it's probably not fatigue.

Maybe it's jig lag? You might not be able to tell, but you can click on a link there where I typed the words "jig lag" in the post above. That should explain what it is.

Fishing is in my experience much slower overall. It needs to be bumped up on par with the yield of DoL pulls. The only fish I have ever seen pull more than x3 is Indigo Herring, I can on occasion pull in x4 of those, but it is rare and I am guessing a bug. The speed itself with not be so bad if we were pulling up more than x3.

Fishing SP to 50 now is the easiest of the 3 DoL class.
OP, if you are having such drastic issues, then something is wrong/bug, and not how the system actually works.

Regarding Vespers last post regarding yields, these are the hardcaps that I have noticed,

Logging - 5
Harvest - 7
Mining - 3
Quarry - 7 (or is it 5, I'm unsure)
Fishing - 3 (seems that herring are an exception, but I haven't personally exceeded 3 on other types of fish)
Spear - 3/5/7 unsure, have not done extensive testing

Having to keep in mind, that INT,MND,PIE play a VERY large roll in increasing yields.
Vesper, if you are complaining about fishing yields with a PIE of 40 (lodestalked you), you should really try increasing it. I can easily fish up 100 red coral in a single fatigue sitting at R41, that's 2mil on my server.

If anything, logging hardcap needs to be decreased.
The volume of Yew logs that can be harvesting in a sitting is insane.

The "Jig lag" sounds like the most likely culprit, as I am using a crappy wireless connection. But why does it affect only fishing? Why does it get worse when doing fieldcraft leves?

Also what's your DEX / PIE? Maybe that's what's giving you issues?

Hey there, I released a fishing guide on lodestone that I had made for my LS and they said it was very helpful, perhaps something in it may help you understand fishing better? Just look in my sig for the lodestone article ^^

My DEX and PIE, along with all my other stats, are at 70.

Overall stats have little effect on anything currently, iv'e had my piety high in the past and it made no difference. I pull x3 as my average number. I am saying that the max pull total should be increased to be more on par with what a miner and botanist can pull in one hit. Right now fishing is x3 pull max, with the exception of Indigo Herring, which both come in x4 on occasion. The actual speed of fishing no fisher should actually complain about now that I think of it. We can go to one spot and stand there all day, Botanist and Miners needs to run around to different nodes, sometimes have a node close on them before it is finished being harvested. Sometimes the nodes are very far apart.

Overall pull totals could use an increase, but imo no one should complain about the extra few seconds it takes to pull in a fish.

As I pointed out in the other thread Vesper, mining yield cap is 3, same as fishing. The only significant desparity is logging at a cap of 5.

Actually mining hardcap for high rank items is actually 1. Gems, all Gold, and Mythril is capped at 1.
For refference top wood, Mahogany, is also capped at one log.

If anything should be adjusted, it should be logging down to a cap of 3 for MH, not an increase to fishing.
When high ranking fish can still be caught at 3 per, while other skills are capped at 1, I'm not sure really what you are complaining about.

Please give examples of specific materials that you feel are imballanced.

This is the same problem I have. Yes what is explained as Jig Lag. It's a failed anti-bot messure they ninja after Beta 2
it's actually a two fold thing. In alpha b1/b2 I had no problems fishing but Mining and gathering were unusable.
starting in OBT I couldn't catch a fish but could do all the gathering and mining I wanted. each instance it was what
is called jig lag. jig then fail or swing then fail.

I no the problem is my slow ass internet because I'm on satellite but really for what we are doing these timers shouldn't be there or atleast be set higher as to not cut a part of the game out for people with higher ping times.

You don't have to walk to find a new location between each fishing like botanist and miner.

So it is already fair.

I think the OP is doing something completely wrong. Fishing is fine, and you're seriouisly complaining something is "hard" or "harder"? Stop, stop stop stop stop. Fishing is fun and not difficult at all, if you're seriously pulling up 2-3 fish in a 30 min leve YOU ARE FAILING AT THIS GAME AND NEED TO STOP BEING BAD.

Don't ask for something to be easier, you need to improve. Whenever I do a fishing leve I finish it in 5-10 mins depending on the leve. I usually catch every fish and have no problems getting bites or anything. I'm doing level20 leves at level 19 too.
