It does not require a key. That's what makes it open; anybody can join.
That is what I initially thought too, but I have been told that the open beta for version 1.0 required a beta key so I want confirmation.
My younger brother played 1.0 and despite numerous calls, tickets, e-mail support, and inbox refreshing... he never got his beta key for phase 3. By the time Bayhone set up the special phone line for 1.0 players seeking their code, phase 3 was practically nearing its end. I told him it was ok because character data is not saved so only phase 4 matters. Now my little brother is diligently working and saving up his vacation hours and it would really aggrivate me if he takes his hard earned time off for phase 4 only to spend it all on the phone, putting in tickets, etc... for a code he will never have.
I'm not asking for spoilers, ingame content, dates, or anything like that... just a simple & practical question. Is there a beta key required for open beta? We've been paying customers since Chains of Promethia was new and it would take maybe a minute or less for a dev to simply provide a "yea" or a "ney" on this one. Please devs! Let us know so we can plan our time off accordingly!
You do not need a developers answer as it is common knowledge my dear.
The answer is provided to you, yes it is open to you and to all of us without need of a key.
The plan is that the data will also be saved and carry over to launch, unless a critical bug is discovered.
Beta road map is located here for your perusal ^_^
I sincerely hope you are right, but the roadmap does not specifically say one way or the other if a key will be required for phase 4. I just looked it over one more time to be sure and it doesn't. It says it is an open beta, but if the "open beta" for version 1.0 required a code, then it is something for me to be legitimately concerned about. Above all, I don't wanna see my hard working little brother put in a crapload of hard work and overtime to build up vacation hours just to spend it all refreshing his inbox in disappointment.
No need to hope, open beta means it's open to everyone. You didn't need a key for open beta in 1.0 either, as I was in the closed beta and had a friend join me for open beta then.
All that is needed is a valid SE account.
Your mouth is an open beta and everyone is invited.
This is how I always define "Open Beta", Everyone and their mothers can join. Even that uncle under the bridge. Meaning, YOU, ME, Everyone, even the Trolls.
Looks like a code might be required for Phase 4:

Remember you may want to avoid using @hotmail as your email. People had many problems getting codes thru their hotmail accounts.
Wow. A closed open beta. Only SE could think that one up.

Question for the Devs. I was an Alpha tester and carried over into Beta. A registration key was note required for Alpha and as an automatic carryover none was issued for Beta. Do I now need to get a registration key for Phase 4 (Open Beta) or will I carryover again. Hope you see this prior to the deadline.
I did register a code for PS3. I am assuming that this code only applies to PS3 for Phase 4.
I have been in Beta since the beginning and only later applied for PS3 Beta access. Once I got the PS3 acceptance email, it included both a Beta Code and a PS3 activation code of some sort. The only thing I had to use was the PS3 code, since once I linked my SE and PSN account, it recognized that I already had a beta code registered, and was able to download, then play, from then.
Please be advised if you do register a 2nd Beta code (while setting up your PS3), you will end up with a 2nd XIV Service account (with only the beta code registered to it) which you may not want and may be confusing to later add services (and not knowing which is which).
Several people got more than one code. That doesn't mean you needed the 2nd one.
This is why you don't assume anything guys. Everyone on the first page acted like it was common knowledge that no code would be required even though it never specifically said that anywhere. I am grateful though, that they posted this information. My brother and I will know not to plan any time off now until the beginning of early release.
It makes me sad that your brother didn't get a key when SE should know that he should have. Has he tried signing up for a beta key again? Is he getting the "this email already applied" message? Maybe you could try the "Bayohne Phone" to see if he can get his key and register it in the next 10 days? I wish you both the best.
Weird how they worked that in the beginning. Went back and rechecked my confirmation e-mail for Alpha and there was no registration code, just a link to download the client. Never received anything for Beta, just downloaded the client and started the first day. My SE Account lists the same thing so I am going to assume that I am good. If not then I will just have to enjoy Open Beta on my PS3
You are correct. I went back and looked at my Alpha email of December 10. It directed me to log into a certain page and create a username. From there I had access to the Alpha/Beta forums and was then able to DL the client. There was no code.
However, alpha did not get me into beta, as Molly implied. Legacy got me into Beta and I was emailed a code for that, along with instructions on how to register it onto my SE account, on February 19.
I do not believe that Alpha was automatic entry into Beta.
*hugs*
I wish I could just give him my beta access. :(
I am actually wondering the same thing as Arkham Native Santori Zhonets. When he attempts to apply, does a message state, "This e-mail already applied" or some equivalent? If nothing else, mayhaps try a different e-mail address? Of course, not a hotmail one! He he.
The deadline (July 30th) is steadily approaching...eesh! Does your brother have a PS3? I ask because I'd be more than overjoyed to give him my PS3 BETA ACCESS CODE if I receive one before the 30th deadline and he does not (here presuming that more invites will be sent prior to the deadline)!!!
Twelve, guide him!
