Padjal Naming Conventions?

So, I was wondering exactly how the Padjal are named, and what the names symbolize. For example, we have the Seedseers, Kan-E-Senna, Raya-O-Senna, but then we have the oddball brother, A-Ruhn-Senna.

After looking at other Padjal names, there are E-Sumi-Yan and O-App-Pesi. It seems that male names have the single letter begin in the front of of the names, while females have theirs in the middle.

Looks like the last section is probably the family name, the first the first name. I'm not sure what the middle section means though.

It's obviously different between males and females too, as the females have the single letter in the middle and males have it at the beginning.

The first two parts of the name are the given name, I think. I've heard E-Sumi-Yan referred to as "E-Sumi". Of course, picking the structure apart can only teach us so much. I'd like to know how they arrived at such names in the first place.

I do believe the extra letter has to do with when they are bestowed with horns and whatnot. The placement of the letter is at the beginning for males, and in the middle for females.

As Yru mentioned, we clearly hear "E-Sumi" in one of the cutscenes, so we could probably assume the others follow similarly..that is, the letter is treated as an extra syllable in their name.

Now that I think about it, how did they get their names, exactly? I mean, they weren't exactly born Padjal, so do they just change their names?

This is what I'm suspecting. When they become Padjal, they are born into a new life, so to speak. It would make sense to choose a new name to reflect their new identity.

Hello all,

Allow me take a few moments to shed a little light on the naming conventions used for Padjals.

First off, the language that the names are based off of is that of the Ainu peoples, indigenous to northern Japan.

Here are a few real-world examples of that language:

sir e-tok : the edge of the world
nupe : tears
pon : small
wakka : clear water

We aren't using that language as-is, but have tried to create something unique based off the spellings, sounds, syllable count, and overall feel of the words.

Here are the rules for the names:

1. All are comprised of three words.

2. The first two are the forename, and the final word is the surname.

3. The first name is constructed of simple vowel-based word (E, Ae, Uo, I, Ea, etc.) combined with a longer companion word. In the case of males, the vowel-based word comes first. In the case of females, it comes second.

Male:
E-Sumi-Yan
O-App-Pesi

Female:
Kan-E-Senna
Raya-O-Senna

4. Words in the Padjal language are normally separated by spaces. However, when a group of words forms a single concept (such as a proper noun, or a compound word), they are connected with hyphens.

In addition to NPC names, the ancient language can be seen used in names of sacred locations around the Twelveswood. If a name is Padjali, you can assume that the location has been there for a long time.

Place names:
The Thousand Maws of Toto-Rak (a beast from Padjali mythology)
Tam-Tara Deepcroft

Enemy names:
Ak-Inik varlet -> servant of the Inik house
Ak-Mena varlet -> servant of the Mena house (Ak being the honorific prefix attached to a deceased member of a house)

There are several old Hyur families in Gridania which consistently (albeit rarely) produce Padjals. Those include the Senna, the Yan, and the Pesi families. (Note the family names still possess the Padjali linguistic roots).

This is a little surprising to me. I always assumed that Padjal could be of any race, but were reborn into a Padjal once they were blessed. This makes a lot more sense, though. I wonder why the family names contain the Padjali roots, though. Is it just because of the fact that they have a history of producing Padjal, so they changed their name at a point in time, or is it because they're old families and have those ties?

I'd go with they're old family names reaching back to the time of Gelmorra. More dedicated loremongers than I can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm also under the impression that the first padjal chosen by the elementals would have been when the Gelmorran civilization started to migrate above ground into the forest proper? So Gelmorran/Padjali would be more or less synonymous?

Excellent post! It was nice to get some insight on their naming conventions, their ancestry and to see their influence in the naming of some of the landmarks in the Black Shroud.

Ok, so this tells us that the padjal grow horns some time after birth (A variation on puberty?) and they first appeared in Eorzea after the first of the hyur migratory waves.

We also know that there is the "pact of Gelmorra" that the elemental Oha-Sok referred to.
...oh look, there's that hyphen! Padjal naming conventions in elemental names? Or is the language of the padjal the language of the elementals?

There are so many other things I'm tempted to discuss, but I'll leave my speculation there for now.

But yeah, I agree on posting things which are just assumptions or unsubstantiated there, as too many players use it as their 'source' for information.

So I have a lore question about the Padjal that's been bugging me for a while and this seemed the best place to pose it.

So we know Elezen were the first race to migrate to Eorzea. They came from the north and inhabited the Twelveswood, underground in the city of Gelmorra. I've always associated Gelmorra and Padjal together because it wasn't until the Padjal learned to speak with the elementals that the inhabitants of Gelmorra were allowed to live above ground in the Twelveswood. Pact of Gelmorra I believe it was called.

In Fern's post it said to associate all things Padjal with something really old. But Fern said that Padjal are all Hyur. Hyur didn't migrate to Eorzea until c.572 of the Sixth Astral Era. In the grand scheme of the Eorzean timeline, 1000 years doesn't seem really old. I had always thought that the Pact of Gelmorra happened long before then.

So did Elezen live under the ground in Gelmorra until the Padjali Hyur came c.572? They couldn't have because the Order of the Twin Adder existed 1500 years ago during the sixth Umbral Era. And according to the Raven: Light of the Future article, conjury was created and refined as a way for the Gelmorrans to communicate with the Elementals. But according to the White Mage quest, White Mages existed in the Fifth Astral Era, long before the supposed advent of conjury according to this line of thought. So was there White Magic before there was Conjury?


So I guess the questions I have for Fernehalwes are:

When did the Elezen build Gelmorra?
If Elezen and Hyur get into territorial wars every time they come near each other, how did Hyur's become an intricate part of Gelmorran society?
How did the Hyur even find Gelmorra if it was underground in the middle of an angry, impassable forest?
When was the Pact of Gelmorra made?
When was Gridania founded?
Was the original Grand Company of the Twin Adder Gridanian or Gelmorran? Or is the Twin Adder a brand new company that did not exist back in the Sixth Umbral Era?


So either this is a major flaw in the Gridanian/Gelmorran lore or Gelmorra wasn't founded until circa the year 600 of the Sixth Astral Era and 1.0 players witnessed the birth of the Twin Adder Grand Company. Which would make Gridania/Gelmorra the youngest city-state in Eorzea. Which raises the question of where did the Elezen make their home before Gelmorra? And how did White Magic exist before and without Conjury?

Now I can't remember where I read it in-game (and it's not like I can go hunting right now), but iirc Gridania is only about 500 years old.

The wall markings inside the various Gelmorran ruins we've seen so far suggest the concept of the twin adder, representing unity between Elezen and Hyur, existed before the emergence into Gridania.

Okay so I am kind of taking all of you on your words about past in-game lore references, so forgive me if I do not make any sense.

Sounsyy said that White Magic was something forgotten or abandoned in the 5th Astral Era, right? And we have established that the Padjal came later when the Hyurs joined Gelmorra, long after white magic was discarded, right? I haven't actually done the White Mage Job quest yet -- that is, I didn't do it in 1.0 -- so maybe I am missing something there -- but that would lead me to believe that the Padjal cannot be the only keepers of white magic secrets, this meaning that I find myself in agreement with what you were just proposing, Catapult. That is, if White Magic preceded Padjali. That being said, maybe white magic did lend the foundation for conjury, perhaps from the Padjali discovering it somehow, maybe by way of commune with the elementals, which would also mean that conjury happened during the reconciliation with the elementals as opposed to as a result of such, non? Do we know who the original white mages were in the 5th astral era or what white magic was primarily used for then or why it was abandoned/forgotton at all (my grammar is awful here)? The elementals, fearing the return of the intense white magic, might have conveyed only a small part of it in this new conception of conjury, tempered by a need to keep balance through use of selective elementally aggressive magic, and an insistence to follow their will (to avoid another white magic disaster? Again, presuming there was a dramatic reason why it was abandoned/forgotten in the 5th Astral Era).

And why does my bloody internet browser think that "elementals" and "conjury" do not exist as words? Curse ye, Chrome. Curse ye.

(Oh, and please help me sort out how to properly pluralize Padjal and where to do so and which suffix means what in where. Padjali is the plural? Maybe? Or is it like "belonging to Padjal" there? :confused: )

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think "Padjal" can be used as both singular and plural. Like moose. I believe "Padjali" is descriptive of something belonging to the Padjal. Like the Padjali language. Padjali magic. But you can run into one Padjal or two Padjal in the Shroud.


As for the WHM questline, it didn't go into a ton of detail, but the gist was that during the 5th Astral Era many White Mages abused their power (causing the Sixth Umbral Era) and it became a forbidden practice. And only select Padjal are permitted to use it and keep the knowledge of it alive.

So going over this quest text brings up a new theory. So let's say that the Elementals used to permit man to live within the Twelveswood during the 4th and 5th Astral Eras. Man discovers magic. Man starts to destroy and pervert even the purest magicks for personal gain. The Elementals wrath ushers in the 6th Umbral Era flood and the forests rise to bury all those within. The Elementals forbid man from using White Magic on account of this. Maybe this is why man is not permitted to live within the forest during the Sixth Astral Era. They are forced to live underground. Until the Padjal learn the art of Conjury to commune with the Elementals. This gives way to a pact that man can once more live amongst them so long as no harm comes to the forest and the Elementals gifts are not used for destruction or self-gain. Which would explain why Gridanians take nothing in abundance, kill only when directed by the elementals, and fear outsiders. Gridanians do not want the outsiders breaking the pact and causing another Umbral event because the Wrath of the Elementals does not distinguish between protector and defiler.

Going down this line of thought, neither Gridania nor Gelmorra would have existed in the 5th Umbral Era. Therefor the Twin Adders could not exist as we know it today. So the question becomes, who lived in the Twelveswood before the Gelmorrans?

I worded it as speculation in the Trivia section. I do what I can to not post anything unofficial as though it's fact.

Of course, if people don't like it they can edit it themselves. This is why I keep asking for help on the wiki. Even I make mistakes, and I'm going on a mass-editing spree once the NDA is fully lifted to correct all of the 1.0 data I can while I separate it with updated ARR data.

Speculation aside, this is a really weird theory to me, because here's the thing: like Ferne said earlier in this thread, the three families which constantly produce Padjal are the Pesi/Yan/Senna families. So...assuming they are the only children of that family, they kind of would have to be able to reproduce to keep the family line going. If we go back maybe a few hundred years or so and maybe only one Senna was born, and that Senna was a Padjal, we would have to assume that that Padjal had kids; whether they grew horns and were blessed by the elementals is a different story because, as stated, it's pretty damn rare. So, unless O-App/E-Sumi/Kan-E and her siblings have other , Hyur siblings we don't know about to keep the family line going (that would be an interesting twist), that would be the only explanation to me...which, yeah, is a little creepy considering the only Padjal who even looks somewhat old enough to do that is Kan-E...so unless the elementals are giving them magical babies out of trees...it's pretty strange.

...Though, keep in mind, the Padjal are much older than they look, as E-Sumi states in both 1.0 and ARR, saying he has "seen many more summers" than you would first think. It makes me wonder what determines a Padjal's biological clock to stop--for example, the Sennas. Is Kan-E stuck at being the oldest-looking Padjal because she is the oldest of the siblings and the "Elder Seedseer"? Is Raya-O stuck as looking like the middle child and A-Ruhn the youngest? I never really knew so I always assumed the Sennas were the youngest Padjal...I felt like E-Sumi (who I'm assuming might be over 100) was actually older than Kan-E. They don't give us much history on her in the story aside from the Twin Adder blurb on the Lodestone, nor any of the Padjal-producing families in general. So I'm stuck with making my own crazy theories about how old they all really are...and that's a story for another day. :P

I personally interpret "consistently (albeit rarely) produce Padjals" as meaning that while quite a few members of those families become Padjals, the majority do not. It is the normal Hyur members of the families that continue on the family line. There probably wouldn't be many instances where there is only one child in a generation, so the family could carry on. I'll use myself as an example. I am an only child. If I had become a padjal my parent's line would have ended. But I have 10 cousins on my father's side. As long as they didn't become padjal and had kids of their own the family would carry on.

The hyur girl, Fye (spelling?), used her own life energy to fuel her whm spells. She deliberately refused to learn the proper means of casting healing spells and was a threat to herself. This may be why, in those eras mentioned, that white magick was banned through whm ignorance as to a proper source for channeling their heals.

As for who was using white magick before conjury was created this could well be individuals like Fye and her mother who could , unknowingly, tap into their life force to cast powerful heals.

And if these types of healers were busy accidently killing themselves through Raise, could they have revived or will they in 2.0 revive so and so's given that they are unbound by the conjurer's rules.

While Raya-O-Senna is probably not the most reliable source on the subject, she mentions that White Magic was originally created as a balance to the destructive force of Black Magic. And that it became forbidden as a result of White Mages abusing their healing powers for self gain.

I wouldn't really count self-sacrificing magic as using your powers for self gain. Seems pretty close to the definition of a selfless act to me. I image the abuse of power that White Mages were accused of by the Elementals was something closer to seeking profit for healing. Maybe altering the aetherial form of the magic to harm rather than to heal. Something along those lines. What the girl is doing in the new ARR CNJ questline seems more akin to a form of 1.0's Thaumaturgy than the essence of Conjury.

Conjury draws from the power from the earth and aether and channels that energy into a spell. Whereas, Thaumaturgy drains the aetherial stores of the caster's own body. Like how in the new THM class quests the youngest of the seven lalafell brothers simply does not possess enough aether to sufficiently cast a spell without doing himself harm.

Not that it has much bearing on Eorzean culture, but I think there are laws in the US regarding relationships with adults who look like minors. If not, then at the very least it's socially awkward.

I agree with finiteHP, there is probably much more to the Padjal-producing line than is shown. My guess is that O-App Pesi, E-Sumi Yan and the Senna sisters are something like fourth cousins twice removed. We don't know their exact ages, so they could be from totally different generations.

This is an opinion I share.

Mind you, I find it interesting that the three Sennas are referred to as siblings, suggesting that the one Hyur mother gave birth to three padjal, and ones that rose to become the seedseer council no less - this would have to be very rare.

This is an opinion I share.

Mind you, I find it interesting that the three Sennas are referred to as siblings, suggesting that the one Hyur mother gave birth to three padjal, and ones that rose to become the seedseer council no less - this would have to be very rare.

I was actually thinking about that possibility earlier today, that they weren't actually directly related and just happened to come from different generations! The forums read my mind! o.o

We still can't say for sure because we don't know their exact ages, but it would make sense, even with Kan-E calling Raya-O and A-Ruhn "sister" and "brother"--they're usually addressed by those titles by the general populace anyway (ex. Brother O-App, Brother E-Sumi), so yeah, they could just be acting as siblings since they're in the same family, when in fact they might be, like...hundreds of years apart.
