Garlean naming conventions?

Yo, Fernehalwes!

We have naming conventions for Eorzeans and the five races, but curiosity has me wondering what Garlemald follows in regards to names. It seems like sort of a melting pot of cultural names (which I'd assume is due to them having annexed so much land into their empire?), but some things seem to be common.

We've seen plenty of Garleans flee the empire (such as members of the Garlond Ironworks, and obviously Cid Garlond himself), so I imagine it wouldn't necessarily be a rare occurrence for Garleans to pop up in Eorzea while seeking refuge from the empire. Suffice it to say, I could see some players wanting to have a character with "Garlean" lineage.

As far as names go, I've taken note that a lot seem to have romanic roots. Gaius, for example, is roman in origin if I'm not mistaken. Solus, the given name of the emperor, is latin for "alone". The empire's military is constructed much like the roman legions, so this isn't really all that surprising.

However, there seems to be other influences on their names. For example, Gaius van Baelsar and Nael van Darnus. "Van" is a common prefix to surnames for the dutch. Does this mean they have both dutch and roman influence? Or was this simply an aesthetic touch to Garlean culture, and their actual names don't have dutch influence?

But what about Nael van Darnus himself? I think it's safe to assume he is Elezen (given his motions in-game, and the fact that he's all lanky. Would be weird to have a Hyur who's limbs are that elongated.), and seems to be further reinforced by the fact that Nael is french in origin. French being what Elezen names are based off.

This thought brings into question whether racial naming conventions that are common in Eorzea are also common in Garlemald. Why would Nael, a member of house Darnus (which is presumably a very powerful family in Garlean society), have an Elezen name and not something more fitting of Garlean naming conventions?

I'm not the Lord of the Lore, so take this with a grain of salt.

Since the Empire's military use Roman titles like Centurion, Legionaire, etc one would believe that they have Latin/Roman names as well. You yourself gave the names of the Emperor and Gaius as examples. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe I read that Darnus was not born in the Empire. He joined from the outside and therefore didn't have a Roman/Latin name. Everyone born within the empire use those Latin names, since Darnus wasn't born in the empire, he does not share that trait.

I heard this way back when Darnus made an appearance, I'm prolly wrong about his history though. Thought I'd share. =D

A lot of what you're saying is dead on. It's a big handful of Latin and pre-Latin Proto-Indo-European where there's not a true Latin source.


Solus zos Galvus
A loose Latin translation for Solus is alone, as in solitary or sole.

Galvus is not a Latin word, but it is likely a Latinized version of the word Latvian word galva which can mean top, head, or spike. You put that together and you basically arrive at "sole leader."

I'm not sure what zos means, but it's probably something to do with Garlean leadership naming conventions, possibly (though, this is a stretch) a neutered form of the widely known Jewish word Zohar which means "radiance," so perhaps his full name means, "The Only, the radiant, Leader." Latin leaders had a similar term for radiant used to mean godly: divi, meaningly divine. It was used in many Imperial leadership names.

If Gaius were to supplant him, we might see something like "Gaius, the radiant, Baelsar" ... which brings us to what all the parts of his name mean.


Gaius van Baelsar
Gaius is one of the most established Latin names in so much that the etymology often just ends at, "a popular Latin first name for males." If you care beyond that, it comes from the word gaudere, which means to rejoice. So, you're overjoyed to have a son - and why wouldn't you be?

The van in Garlean names is probably not from Latin influence, but of the Proto-Indo-European root that shows up as Dutch "van" and German "von" that simply means, "of" or "from." We're likely meant to take this as "from the noble house of." Latin didn't exactly have "houses" so much as "lines" (that I know of, I'm not expert on Rome). They didn't say "from the house of," they just said filius, as in"son of." For example, Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus had the Imperial name "Imperator Caesar Divi Augustus filius Augustus" (Emperor of the Empire, the Divine Augustus, son of Augustus). We don't see that with Garlean nobility, we seem to see houses.

I'm not sure if his last name is from an actual Latin inspiration, any Proto-Indo-European at all, or if it's just a play on Caesar. His Japanese name is バエサル baesaru, pretty close, yeah? We might be seeing some foreshadowing. If anyone else knows something for Baelsar, lemme know. I never found anything, but I might not have used the right search cues.

So, for now, I'm calling him "Exalted, of House Baelsar"


Nael van Darnus
Not only was he an Elezen, he was descended from the Allagan Empire's honorable House Darnus, which was responsible for keeping some of its more arcane wisdom. Some of this power, apparently, still existed in his blood.

I've seen some rumor that Nael is actually made from ظفر, an Arabic word for nail that is a synonym for victory or triumph. The other connections I can find also lead right back to nail, regardless of what connotations you want on it.

Darnus I've always had a really hard time with. My #1 best guess is that it's actually a Latinized form of darn, Proto-Indo-European for "to hide," such as to hide the knowledge of the Allag. House Darnus would be "House of Secrets."

Here's the thing... the Hyur are said to have arrived about 1,000 years ago ("Some one thousand years and three great migratory waves later, they are now the most populous of all the civilized races"), shredding the Elezen belief that, because they were the only residents of Eorzea, the region was given to them by the Twelve ("Unfortunately, this belief made the eventual appearance of the Hyur in their multitudes akin to an invasion"). When did Allag rule Eorzea? The height of their power was over 5,000 years ago. They were probably all Elezen. Hell, it's possible that the Elezen rode out 5, maybe even 6, umbral eras alone.

So why does neither "Nael" nor "Darnus" sound French? Ferne's already told us that Elezen naming conventions haven't changed since they first arrived in Eorzea. The only thing I've got is that he changed it on purpose to fit in more with the Garleans. "Nail, of the Noble House of Secrets" sounds pretty intimidating, doesn't it.

And then he changed it to Nael Deus Darnus (Nael, the God, Darnus) when he started losing a fight that time. Guy was probably just a good showman - gotta give the people what they want.

Still, maybe he was born Naelmont. You don't know.

Fun Fact: Swedish word dårhus means "lunatic," as in crazy due to the moon. HAH.


Cid nan Garlond
This one's harder. Nan can either mean "the" or "father" depending on where you go. It might not mean either, though. I don't know. Wild conjecture? Until I hear otherwise, my assumption is that "nan Garlond" means "the honorable." Garlands are those wreaths of flowers you wear on your head, which to me recalls, again, the caesar's Civic Crown as well as the corona laurea and olive wreath as well.

Cid is just a throwback to all the other Cids in Final Fantasy, likely coming from the legendary Spanish knight, "El Cid" (The Lord).

Figure I'd continue to add to the speculation, in the form of Cid's father.

It's mentioned in the Immortal Flames questline that Cid's father is named Midas nan Garlond. Yet another latin name. Midas being the king of Phrygia, who was given the power to turn everything he touched into gold by Dionysus. Perhaps that is hinting at Midas' incredible skill with creating very powerful Magitek, and eventual downfall due to that very gift. (Or so it was inferred.)

This is what I've been assuming as well; an allusion to another "master metal worker," so to speak. Glad I could contribute; thanks for giving me an excuse to let these ramblings loose. I've had them in a rudimentary form for a while, but had no excuse to be like, "HEY ERRYBODEH, do you think his name might mean, 'Nail of God, descended from the House of Secrets!?'" without sounding like a dårhus out of context :P

That said, I was a huge Jeuno nut in FFXI. I would have traded away my alliegance to The Dutchy in an instant, and my Sandy Pride was off the charts - so I would bet my bottom gil that there are a lot of people out there who would be all the hell over Garlean naming conventions to create a character backstory as a spy or defector (I would).

One thing I'd like to point out related to Gaius and his full name, is that the first time I learned of him, my mind went directly to Battlestar Galactica, where a prominent character in both the original version (Count Baltar: antagonist) and the reboot (Gaius Baltar: self-servingly ambiguous in his alignment) played a key role in the story's over-arching conflict.

In regards to Cid's surname (Garlond), I think it's generally accepted that it was a subtle reference to Garland, the main antagonist for the original FF (and FFIX for that matter). I presume 'Garlemald' is derived from FFI's insane Cornerian knight as well.

In terms of Baelsar, I had a funny feeling about the name that I couldn't quite put into words -- then with a little help from the Gugull monster -- I remembered:

Baal or Bael, one of the seven princes of hell, a demon, mentioned in the Hebrew Bible.

Tsar, a Slavic title equivalent to emperor, king, or the like, from the name Caesar.

= Demon Prince/King?

Whenever I make up names, I tend to put together the names by syllable. Therefore, when I attempt to break down a name, I examine it by syllable. This doesn't always assist me, but all the same I wanted to explain my method above.

Given that the emperor of Garlemald is referred to as "his radiance" I suspect your hunch is on target.

Another thing to remember about the legati is that there are, surprise surprise, at least fourteen of them foreshadowed, with number fourteen protrayed as a lasting antagonist. Now Nael's story supposedly bore thematic links to FFVII, so it would logically follow that each legati will have a backstory aligning to the themes of the FF game in question.

The Legatus of the Third Legion may very well be the Cloud of Darkness manifested. The commander of the sixth legion may be somewhat mad and the thirteenth Legatus could be focused on re-booting creation.

Granted, I haven't played FFVII myself, but are people able to work with this concept for a closer examination of Nael's name?

• Legatus 4 might turn out to be Cid's brother!
• Legatus 5 could have ties to Gilgamesh and Atomos!
• Legatus 8 could be an orphan, or have ties to Amon/Hein
• Legatus 9 might hate Legatus 1 for causing his disease(Kuja and Garland respectively)

I refute your point sir engarde. I argue that the Elezen devolved from their predecessor race, the Alla-gans. But the Allag themselves were Lalafell before they fell from power hense fell. Alla over time changed into Lala, Alla rearranged and phonetically the same. Lala-fell =P

If my hypothesis becomes true which i do not doubt! the Elezen will be unable to hide from the truth, that they are just overgrown Lalafell with elongated Dhamel necks making their heads ideal for predators to pick.

Did Nestern just out himself as an Archer fan? I can't get enough of that show. When I did my playthrough of Skyrim, I primarily did Archery and all of my custom accessories were silver and named Sterling Archer's Ring and Sterling Archer's Necklace, etc.

I thought about both of those, but Bahamut already covered the "mind control from the moon" in offering Nael much-desired power.

As for Kuja, I didn't think it'd be right for a man of any Eorzean race to have a "creator" unless he's an undead Frankenstein monster of sorts, which would likely not make it to Legatus status anyway. Perhaps instead of "creator" it'd be his parent, and whatever shortens his life might be a hereditary illness. Either that or they had him enhanced at the cost of halving his life span.

Well, van is used for the Generals of the Legions it seems. However Nael assumed the title of Deus (which means God, as someone has pointed out before) once he got all glowy from accepting power from Dalamud. I guess sol would be Emperor or ruler. Wonder what other titles there are...

Van must be in relation to the rank of Legatus. Sol, as you've mentioned, is probably exclusive to the emperor.

There's also "nan". Like Midas nan Garlond, or Cid nan Garlond. I know Cid was named a minister after his father, and Midas was the Grand Minister of Industry if I'm not mistaken. So the "nan" prefix could possibly be in relation to the ministers.

Ahhh... now we see what Ferne may have been hinting at... so, in hierarcherial order it is possibly:

• Zos - For the Imperial family
• Van - For the top ranking Generals (and aristocrats?)
• Nan - For Grand Ministers (also Ambassadors and high ranking political figures?)

Ok, I should have seen that one coming.

"Two Vans are better than one" makes so much more sense now.

Also, I wouldn't guess that the middle name is representative of rank, but more career. Van becomes millitary commander, where as Nan would be for engineers or inventors.

I suppose this isn't 100% related to naming conventions, but I figure it's something I'd tack on here since it might have some influence on things.

I've always wondered, do the Garleans have their own written and spoken language? It seems like something that they would have, but we as characters simply would have no idea because we have the Echo and can understand everyone anyways.

It's never been mentioned in-game to my knowledge, either, so there's no telling there. If they do, I wonder what sort of accent they might have.

We know what some Eorzean accents are like across various regions of the country, simply by the way text is conveyed and voice actors in certain cutscenes. I've always pictured the Garlean language might be something akin to a mix of German/latin with thick, heavy accents.

Considering that Eorzean looks like the handwritten English alphabet with kata/hira-style shifts, I'm betting the Garleans, Roman in nature all around, just use straight up LINGVA LATINA

From what we've seen, even their bases have Latin names. Castrum Novum, for example.
It also hit me that the White Raven's theme is sung entirely in Latin as well. Could simply have been an aesthetic choice for the song to fit with the theme and merely a coincidence, or maybe the Garleans do literally just speak what we would call Latin.

Which would be awesome.

Their military structure and basic history also aligns reasonably closely to that of the Roman Empire.

(This makes the Eorzean parallels to ancient Greece even more interesting.)

Actually, I have a bit of info considering we just recently got some new names to the list.

Nero Tol Scaeva - Nero is likely just a direct rip from Latin, which means powerful, strong, vigorous. Tol is likely the naming title for his rank as Tribunus Laticlavius. In the Roman army, the tribunus laticlavius stands directly below the legatus and above the other five tribune known as the tribuni angusticlavii. His last name could be related to the genus of hover flies of the same name...hover as in, "Let me hover over this cliff and spy on you." :p

Livia Sas Junius - Livia is probably a reference to the wife of Augustus, first emperor of Rome. The name means olive in Latin. Sas is likely reference to her rank of Tribuni Angusticlavii. Junius could be either lunius or junius, both meaning June. It could also be reference to Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage and queen of gods.

Rhitahtyn Sas Arvina - Because he isn't of Garlean blood and is from a subjugated land, he doesn't receive the typical Latin name. Instead, he is given a traditional Roegadyn name. Rhit in ancient Roegadyn translates to Right, and Ahtyn translates to Judge. His first name literally translates to Right Judge. Sas is likely reference to his rank as Praefectus Castrorum, which if we go by Roman ranking, is pretty much the same rank as tribuni angusticlavii, both being the third most seat in a legion following the Legatus and the Tribunus Laticlavius. His last name, Arvina, may actually be Latin. Arvina is defined as meaning fat, perhaps in reference to his size. Coincidentally, Gaius Papirius Carbo, a Roman tribune in 90 BC, was known for the law which he carried and was surnamed Arvina. Law...Judge...Arvina...Hey...something smells fishy here, Ferne!

So, here's my personal updated list of Garlean 'middle names'.

Military
Van - Legatus
Tol - Tribunus Laticlavius (Second in command)
Sas - Tribuni Angusticlavii, Praefectus Castrorum (Third in command)

Royal Court
Zos - Emperor

Scientist/Engineers
Nan - Engineer

Also slighty off topic, but if I had to bet...I'd wager to say that the whole Color Animal title that Gaius and Nael have aren't exclusive to those who hold the rank of Legatus.

Nero's helm appears to be that of a dragon, or even a drake. I wouldn't be surprised if his other title is the Red Dragon, Crimson Drake, or something along those lines.

Livia's is interesting because her helm is rather....oddly shaped. Since her weapons are actually mounted to her, maybe they play in the design and the source of her name. I don't want to put a whole lot of faith behind it, but perhaps its another bird reference. But then we'd have two white color and bird names. Not sure the power rangers would approve. Perhaps instead of white, her title uses Ivory, or Alabaster, both very precious and valuable materials. It could match up since her weapons are named Aglea, which is Greek for splendor, brilliant, and shining one. As for her animal name...I've no idea. Maybe she's a turtle. THE ALABASTER TURTLE.

Rhitahtyn seems somewhat obvious to me, but I'm ready to be wrong. My guess is that he goes by the Black Bull, if not the Onyx Bull or some other synonym of black. His weapons, Tartarus, is likely a reference to the Greek mythos of the same name which is the infernal regions where the wicked are punished. In Roman mythology, Tartarus is the place where sinners are sent. His weapon names seem fitting for judgement, living up to his translated name as the Right Judge. Maybe he is the Onyx Bull of Judgement. Who knows.

The speculation here is really helpful, I'm thankful to all the hard workers around here. Still, I'd really like a properly outlined naming convention from SE. Hopefully we get one soon.
