Bears

Alright. I have to know. We've seen that Miqo'te have a bear clan. Roegadyn have a word for Bear, and there's a Bear pvp armor. Where are the bears in Eorzea? Are there bears in other areas of Hydaelyn, and just not Eorzea?

Also, while we're on the subject: snakes. There's no snakes either. But we see the usage of bear and vipers in other places. Are these creatures simply not native to Eorzea, but are known to be beasts elsewhere in the world? Will we one day see them?

I would love to see snakes though, in all seriousness. There aren't enough snakes in MMOs in my opinion, I miss the little wiggly things I'd prod with my spear in EQ

I got some grass vipers out fishing once. There's snakes.

I've yet to catch a bear... but then again I haven't been trying...

Funny thing, XI has Lamiae (half-snake women) but not snakes. I think the lore suggests that Piestes are serpents, judging by names like Basilisk, but they have legs ; ;.

It's possible that, given the hilly terrain in MMOs, it's extremely difficult to include a snake that isn't at least somewhat glitchy at all times, if not extremely so. Wasn't there some form of snake item from spearfishing in 1.0, though?

I'd like to see a Zuu of the traditional variety in XIV, since XI gave the name "Zu" to some crappy birds in Mindartia.

Yeah, and we always call the birds condors/vultures in XIV as well. Old school, creepy Zuu's would be interesting.

I could see snakes as being hard to implement in MMO's, due to terrain issues. Having body parts sinking into the world constantly would definitely be disappointing. It would depend really on how they held themselves. We can look at say, roselets for an idea of a way to make them sit well with the terrain (hold most of their body up off of the ground, with only a small section being on the ground.) The alternative is them flying, which would be silly, unless they had wings. (which I won't go on about.)

Bears though, I could imagine some really terrifying implementations for bears. A paralyzing/fear causing bellowing roar, giant bear claws... They could be some shaggy nightmare fuel, man.

If I was director/producer, not only would there be bear enemies, but there would be a playable bear race, lost bear civilizations complete with ancient bear technology, bear gods, and a bear-shaped collector's box.

But alas, I am not... However, that doesn't mean I can't take your requests to the Monster Team (how awesome would it be to have that on your business card).

Cross your fingers, and pray to the bear gods that one day the grizzlies will descend from the mountains so that we might slay them for their phat loots.

One can ask for no more, Brother Fernehalwes. Let the call sound forth! Let bears once again descend upon Eorzea and grace us with their presence!

I moreso want to know their placement in the realm though! If they can tell us that, that'd be awesome. <3

I'd imagine bears, snakes, horses, tigers, sharks, etc. to all exist in the world of Hydaelyn since NPCs clearly talk about them on multiple instances and there are things such as armor and quest dialogue which hint towards their existence. Below is post from Bayohne and the lore team in regards to horses. I feel something similar probably applies to bears as well.

I'm all excited for BEARS now! If I don't see BEARS, I'll be sorely disappoint.

But Mtoto, in that case, the only KNOWN horse in Eorzea (which was mentioned in a La Noscea levequest, up at camp Bald Knoll, other than the ones mentioned in that post)was murdered by Efts...Since we have the lore section open, I would just like to know these other creatures placement in the realm. Though, if we have bear enemies, that'd be amazing. Admit it, you want to see bears.

I think Coerthas would be a fitting environ for bears. Of course Black Shroud is nothing but forests so that'd be a logical place too...

Could it be that a big shaggy bear would be too hard to animate? I suppose if they're designed the same way as Aldgoats, those aren't much bigger. That's not to mention Great Buffalo.

I was wondering the exact same thing! We're getting BEAR ARMOUR. I want to see actual bears! All this time I spent pining for Dhalmels. But if the game has bears.. well. All will be well!

Livery back in the day heavily featured animals like griffins, dragons and unicorns. Both are commonly depicted in art, and Griffin is even a common last name. They don't exist in the real world, though.

Conclusion?

Bears and lions are the mythical creatures of the XIV world.

As far as I'm concerned, XIV's Warrior ripped Beastmaster's style right off. I think BST is thus fully entitled to an image makeover. If we start now, perhaps we can petition SE to make its official look (AF and such) BEAR ARMOR. We'll just need to explain away why BST looks like it fights for the Stormcloaks...

RIGHT? I don't want to derail a thread or get into discussion about unrelated topics, but talk about an example of Lore going awry in a game. A ton of Skyrimmers I've talked to are stone-cold Stormcloak backers and it's like, you do realize that this dude's just making a personal power grab using your passion as a tool right? The Empire's enemies consider him an asset and will crush both him and the remnants of his broken alliances as soon as he wins. The only way out of it is to strengthen the Empire, clear and rebuild the ranks, and fold it like a tidal wave back on those who seek to erode it from within (the Dominion).

Moose would have made a better High King.

Anyway, bears. Frack yeah, bears. I'm serious about this Beastmaster thing, though. Regardless of whether bears are mythological in Eorzea or just off to the side somewhere, now that WAR has made off with the wool and ram horn look, BST's options are open. It could wear a tribal helm made from the severed head of a peiste lined with snurble fur if it wanted to. No limits.
