Dragons

From as far back as the Rapture techdemo Dragons have been a part of FFXIV. So lets pester Fernehalwes with dragon related questions and speculation here. =D

What i want to ask is, how does classifications/hierarchy of dragons work in Eorzea?

Bahamut is the wyrm king as his reference in coerthas confirms?
Does wyrm denote kingship of dragons in Eorzea?

What kind are the dragons from the 1.0 cgi? and will we see them ingame in the future?
From rewatching the 1.0 cgi i've noticed:
1: They breath fire.
2: They have 4 limbs, a pair of wings, and a pair of hind legs. They tuck in their hind legs while in flight.

This may not pertain specifically to FFXIV, but I remember in FFXI that wyrms and dragons were noticably different.

-Wyrms were usually bi-pedaled, flying types. i.e. Tiamat, Vytra, Bahamut, Ouryu, etc.
-Dragons were commonly seen on all fours. i.e. The dragon from the Rank 2 BCNM, the dragons out in Xarcabard.

I have a feeling that dragonkind are going to have a few different breeds. We have Bahamut-style dragons, Midgardsormr style dragons (which may actually include the sea serpent seen in Lominsa), as well as "wyrm," "dragon," and "drake" scalekin genera that we've seen in-game.

We might eventually find out that "Dragons" are simply a Sub-kindred Family of cognizant, high-functioning scalekin - some of which may have been created or influenced by gods such as the twelve, or elder primals.

It's hard to tell, but we also need to distinguish between king and primal.

A dragon/wyrm king is more like a significant dragon than a god (maybe think monarch vs pope) and we already know of a few.

With the trend of FF Summons being Primals in this game, I think it's safe to assume Bahamut is a Primal. So Dragon based rules wouldn't necessarily apply to him per se, but it was mentioned awhile ago in a Dev post regarding the End of an Era cinematic (which also discussed the 1.0 cinematic) that the large dragon in the 1.0 Cinematic was Midgardsormr, and was consdered a sort of 'king' among the dragons (or wyrms) of whatever type was featured in the video.

It was also implied that the dragons from the north were/are a Beastribe, like the Ixal or the Amalja.

Nidhogg is also a great wyrm and a dragon king depending on translations so if wyrm denotes kingship of dragons then by being the wyrm king Bahamut would be the king of dragon kings. We know that Bahamut is a Elder Primal from the end of an era synopsis and we know that Dragons worship a god. A king of kings is a title so high that it could be reserved for a god. It may not be as simple a distinction as all that but still. =P

well i know that nidhogg is a wyrm and a dragon king of eorzea but bahamut has had the title wyrm king so maybe that makes him king of kings or somethin weird lo also shinryu is a dragon god so i dont know how exactly to place the type of dragons on a scale

And not to mention that all dragon's are evil. including wyvern.

The Primals and the Garleans are all evil and the Twelve are good right? =P it's all perspective i don't expect a distinction that black and white for dragons either.

I believe it was mentioned that the title of Wyrm King fall within the realm of Nidhogg, Fafnir, etc. Bahamut isn't a Wyrm King, rather he is revered as a god amongst dragonkin. A tier above the Wyrm Kings.

Usually speaking, "Wyrmking" isn't so much a class or genera as it is Bahamut's individual title. There is a "Wyrmking's Perch" in Coerthas, but... as we've seen, the terminology is up in the air. Tiamat et al. are certainly kings, but I think they were always just referred to as "kings among dragonkind," and then you have the fact that, at some times, Bahamut's title has been translated to "The Dragon King!"

I'm on "wait and see" mode when it comes to the dragons.

Thanks for digging it up! This is in fact what I was referring to.

It's been mentioned that Bahamut is an Elder Primal, which according to what has been said about beastmen/primal worship, they see them as the world's true gods. Bahamut might not be a literal god (we can't really be certain on that whole deal or where they came from), but everything seems to point as the dragons worshipping him as their primal and god.

I'm guessing Bahamut's Labyrinth will answer a lot of questions related to him, and the Ishgard content that will be introduced later in the game will satiate everyone's lust for more information on the dragons.

Yeah i read that back when it was released but it doesn't refer to the dragons as wyrm kings but as dragon kings. I'm willing to bet Fernehalwes' eye, Okipuit's tail, Rukkirii's tentacles, Camate's furr and Bayohne's healer's robes. That the two titles are not one and the same. =P

But to be honest i would be satisfied just knowing a bit more about the dragons from the opening CG, the ones fighting the empire ships with Migardsormr.

That actually sounds like a v1.x description and is largely well documented... mostly by Erik.
But there is something new in there. It describes Midgardsomr as a "deity", meaning it does fall into a gods-related category even if it is different to the primals in origin and nature, and that is was in fact summoned rather than just choosing to rock up for the party.

The "deity" namedrop seems to be fool's gold.

Something I didn't notice until now is just how similar Midgardsormr really is to the Lominsan sea serpent. Both of them are heavily associated with water, they are anatomically similar discounting the skull shape and skin texture (long body, mini wings, lots of little fins), they are said to be created directly by members among The Twelve, and they are charged with guarding something important.

I'm betting we'll see more of this...

After re-reading the Dragoon questline, i believe i have an idea about how the Dragons tick inside. This is going to be big so if you haven't read the Dragoon questline recently, you might want to read/re-read it. http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...l=1#post990168

I will be using quotes from various sources to back up my theory.

Alberic: Sensing the great wyrm's unbridled rage others of his kind began to rouse, and in such numbers as to blot out the sun with their wings. A deep, foreboding darkness swept over Ishgard. ~Unfading Scars~

Their language is emotion/desire/willpower/purpose. Throughout the Dragonkin, be they sentient or not, they all should understand these things, and if Nidhogg is hellbent on attacking Ishgard, all the dragonkin in the vacinity are too. Because they feel his anguish and so his emotions become theirs.

Alberic: Even as I buried my lance in Nidhogg's flesh, our gazes locked, and mine eyes met then with a look that would fair impale a man. In that instant, I found myself assailed by a torrent of emotions not mine own...

Alberic: Sorrow... Rancor... Pity... They threatened to drown the man in me and leave behind a dragon. Fearing that i might turn traitor, I chose to purge myself of the power that the Eye had bestowed upon me. ~Fatal Seduction~

In Ferndale the dragons seem to be said to have just sat and watched Alberic's and Nidhogg's fight as if he willed his battle be 1 v 1. Then rather than retreat when Nidhogg is defeated, the dragonkin ransack Ferndale. Did Nidhogg communicate his desire for it to be destroyed? did the dragons understand that Alberic no longer had any dragon power? .

Alberic: Alas, countless of his brethren yet remained. As if to mock me, they fell upon Ferndale with a vengeance. Bereft of my power, it was all i could do but save one child. ~Fatal Seduction~

There were no mention of lesser dragons fighting with him before his eye was stolen by Haldrath's Lance.

Alberic: Their journey brought them to a wide chasm, whereupon Thordan and his people set to building a bridge. It was then that a dark shadow descended upon them─the great wyrm Nidhogg. Heedless of his own safety, Thordan fearlessly charged at the colossal beast. Alas, he was pushed into the chasm by one of his own, a man seduced by the wyrm, and fell to his death.

Alberic: Taking up his slain sire's lance, Haldrath hurled himself at Nidhogg, even as tears streamed down his face. The confrontation ended when the young man, his hand guided by Halone, landed a mighty thrust that prized out Nidhogg's eye. It sounds as if the Ishgardians moved into Nidhogg's territory at the edge of Dravania, and rather angry at their imposition over his land. He confronted them and lost his eye in the process. This left him feeling slighted and humiliated forever begrudging Ishgard's existence upon his land. And the one who stole his eye.

Estinien: Dragons long outlive men and do not soon forget the wrongs done them. What grudge they harbor burns as a fire in their hearts, over time becoming an unquenchable inferno. Look back on history, and you will see that Nidhogg grows stronger with each awakening. ~Double Dragoon~

Then we have Migardsormr, all the way in Mor Dhona and yet fleets of dragons from Dravania fly to his aid.

And as if to answer the mighty wyrm's call, a host of dragons flew in from the northwestern reaches of Dravania and fell upon the Empire's forces. ~FFXIV website > Locations > Mor Dhona~

Note: again Wyrm is attributed to a Dragon King.

They can commune over Long distances and so if a desire is strong enough they will answer it. This communion is capable of effecting even ordinary humans and possibly your average monster to boot. But most of all it effects the Azure Dragoon.

Alberic: Being derived from our mortal enemies, the power of the Azure Dragoon is a double-edged sword. Even as it lends us the strength we need to smite dragons, it heightens our communion with the creatures, rendering our minds more susceptible to their seduction than ordinary men. ~Fatal Seduction~

This doesn't only apply to more powerful dragons either it goes all they way down the chain to lowest of the low. Though less powerful dragons with low sentience probbably have less sway with it.

Alberic: Being close kin to dragons, drakes also hold sway over the hearts of they who wield dragon power.

Alberic: Lock wills with this adversary and prevail. In doing so, prove yourself worthy to champion the cause to which your lance is sworn. Then the Dragon within you shall awaken with a mighty roar. ~Fatal Seduction~

Migardsormr was worshipped by man, so then surely not all men in Eorzea believe all dragons to be malign.

TLDR: Dragons are not inherently evil, they are linked together by emotion and desires. Acting together like they were an extension of one another.

As someone who hasn't played the Dragoon story arc yet...

/makes note that:

• Ishgard was founded in approximately year 550 6th Astral Era, give or take a few decades.
• Niddhog's last arousal was the same year as the fall of Ala Mhigo.

Alberic: Ishgard's priceless relic is none other than the eye taken from Nidhogg that day. It is a veritable wellspring of dragon power─even so removed from its owner, it can exert control over the hearts of men.

Alberic: Haldrath himself felt its malign influence, but his love of justice brooked no corruption, and he prevailed over the power, claiming it for his own. And so it was that the first Azure Dragoon was born. ~Lance of the Fury~

The Dragonseye is the source of all Azures to date that we know of in 1.0, there is only ever 1 Azure at a time as far as we are made aware, until you as the player become an Azure. It chooses who are worthy to become the Azures. Why?

Estinien: I suppose I must give thanks, for it was the Eye that revealed to me the truth -- a truth so damning as to undo a lifetime of trust. I loved you as a father... but I can ill forgive you for Ferndale.~Into the dragon's maw~

There was only one other we know of that was at Ferndale and capable of telling Estinien the truth, Nidhogg. The eye again is his and so perhaps he understood that Alberic abandoned the dragon within before the last moments of the fight. If he is able to commune through the eye then perhaps all the choosing was his design from the beginning?

Whatever the reason it would appear that the Dragonseye was lost when Estinien dissappeared. Which means no new Azures can be made unless it is found or another method for their creation is discovered. It may not be possible to find it as Nidhogg may have reclaimed it.

Hard not to think of either Panzer Dragoon or Drakengard watching that whole scene. Dragons + high tech floaty empire air ships = instant win. All we are missing now is the dragon mounted shooter aspect... and a giant UFO at the end piloted by Pupu.

To be fair, there's nothing to indicate that you have to make contact with the eye to become an Azure dragoon. I got the impression that the eye "rousing" in our proximity was more how the dragoons knew we'd been chosen than how we were actually chosen. Regardless, you do raise an interesting point...

Things we know:
- The Eye chooses new Azure Dragoons.
- Until now, only one Azure Dragoon has been chosen at a time.

We know of only two Azure Dragoons before Estinien. Haldrath was like the paragon of all things virtuous and had a personality like a paladin, so no corruption there. And Alberic didn't get corrupted either. At the absolute worst he started to slip and then he lost all of his powers so he never became an issue.

We're not told any cautionary tales of Azures who failed to resist this and caved. Until now. Maybe because Estinien is the first to actually get this far. Stealing the Eye is kind of a big deal.

As soon as an Azure Dragoon started going all darkside, the Eye picked another Azure conveniently bestowing on us the power to beat back Estinien.

So... if the Eye really is still connected to Niddhog in more ways than just giving dragoon-y powers to one (or two) lucky people per generation, then what does this say about his/its(/general dragon?) motivations? For a creature so intent on burning Ishgard to the ground, sure sounds like he wants to give it the tools to protect itself.

I specifically recall information here and there stating that the Dragons are pretty much their own Beast tribe despite not being humanoid - Midgardsormr was supposed to be a well respected dragon among their numbers and Bahamut has always been the "King of Dragons: so to speak so I'm sure we'll see something related to the Dragons and their giant, scary, and pissed off God King.

(I originally wrote a a ton and lost it all to my firefox acting up, got all it down again though i think...)

I went back and looked at the unlock quest, he didn't realise straight away but he does say that his soul of the dragoon glowed in the presence of you, so there is that.

I don't agree that he is corrupted by the eye, that suggests he was acting out of character. Where SE go into a lot of detail as to his motivations. Estinien allowed his desire to avenge Ferndale consume him, he became an Azure thinking justice and vengeance were one and the same. Something his peers failed to realise until it was too late. He talks about having a premonition from the dragon within, that Nidhogg would come seeking the Eye. He stole it so he could confront the great wyrm and deliver vengeance upon him. He sought to kill dragons to awaken and strengthen his dragon within. So he could be not only strong enough to defeat Nidhogg, but kill him once and for all. When he learned the truth that Alberic could have prevented Ferndale's destruction, he too becomes an object of his vengeance. You stand in his way between him and his vengeance so you do battle.

After being defeated something speaks to him, telling him to look to his anger and hatred for the power he seeks. I'll admit he does something untoward, he calls for Nidhogg to bestow upon him his blood so he could kill the wyrm's foes. So consumed by vengeance he submits to Nidhogg that he might continue on, having no love for Ishgard or anyone to return to. Something grants his request presumably Nidhogg, because Nidhogg too is consumed by the desire of vengeance, and in that they share a sort of kinship. Haldrath's soul resonates with yours as you cut him down. Alberic later speaks of the voice that laments the divide between dragons and men but it's not made clear who it came from.

The story tells why a Azure Dragoon (Dragon Knight) must not allow his lance be guided by vengeance. You as a Azure only kill justly/to protect others, Estinien killed to satisfy his need for vengeance, and so in the end all he had was his vengeance. Atleast thats what i think, i wouldn't say he couldn't have been corrupted to some degree, but Alberic certainly wasn't aware of it if he was. Alberic even pretty much forgave him and hoped he was ok out there some where, an ever loving father.

Nidhogg's motivations... I want to say it's so he can recover his pride from his first defeat by defeating a greater man than Haldrath, and he realised Estinien wasn't that man. But who knows, Nidhogg does seem to still have some sort of connection with the eye as Estinien seems to think he would pursue him for it, rather than head straight to Ishgard in search of it.

Yeah they did say that, Migardsormr and Nidhogg have both been called dragon kings and wyrms at one time or another. The assumption is that Bahamut is the one above them, but i don't think we have had confirmation yet. Could be that the elder primals do not get worshipped by any single race and that there is a dragon primal yet to be revealed.

Altalus can you check Estinien's last phrases a second time? I am very sure that he doesn't mentions "kill my foes" but he mentions "kill your foes", at least that is what memory tells me hence asking for your clarification since you got that saved. That'd indicate a very deep 'giving in' in name of revenge.

Also, most of you probably didn't notice by an NPC in front of Aurum Vale mentions that the Garleans were moving into Dravania as well and wonders if that was because the dragons themselves had a primal (which is why I had been speculating that Bahamut was a primal for a long while).

Interesting. Besides Bahamut there is Shinryu that i know of that has been described as a dragon god. The paragons who we still don't know who are, are said to have taught the beastmen to summon their Primals. We have to believe that includes the dragons until we know otherwise. Just seems odd to be taught to summon something that can't be?

So they have four(4) front limbs(arms) including the wings and rearlimb(legs)? LOL!
(the way you word this makes it sound funny for pointing the obvious so why?)

Let us not forget, dragons have the ability to stand on their hind legs. I can refrence this fron "Flight of Dragons" as they can talk, fly and walk on feet. Their fire has always served a function for flight but can be deadly as a weapon.

So one ever mentions how anyone can use them as transportation, knowingly Final Fantasy V when you feed a Wind Drake grass, you can use it as a mount. I would want this also in ARR but in situations, not to show off knowing many players would use it for no good cause but to clutter the sky with "wings of fury".

Lets take Bahamut or even Smrgol as an example. 2 fore legs + 2 hind legs + 2 wings, thats a 6 limbed dragon, then we have Migardsormr who only has 2 limbs visible, his 2 wings. Looking again i'm still sure they are 4 limbed, a pair of hind legs and a pair of wings. Just interested in what kind of dragon they are considering their differences to other known dragons. Like how Nidhogg and Migardsormr are wyrms for example, or how there has been many different species of dragons in earlier titles. I find it hard to believe they will only ever be refered to as dragons.

Those dragons have no publically available concept art (which is a shame because they are awesome) and much of their screen time they are too far away to get a good look at them. It took me a few attempts to capture one breathing a fireball among the entire battle and theres a very brief moment you get to see their underside.

I've watched Flight of Dragons, even have it on VHS, so i know well enough. The Yellow/thunder dragon rears up on it's hind legs during the benchmark, though it doesn't appear very stable. We can also be sure that at least some dragonkin will probbably understand the eorzean language, though we have yet to see one speak it with their own tongue. The unknown voice which is assumed to be Nidhogg speaks in Eorzean, so there is that.

I remember an old thread about dragon transportation that has since been archived, or whatever SE does with our old threads. I wanted a instanced world map, above the clouds maybe. So theres no clutter in the sky when looking up from the ground, just maybe one of two automated ones in the sky like they did with empire airships. You could go in with a party to travel around, encounter roaming pirate airships and floating islands.

The wyverns have taken on quite a bit more beastial look, than XI's. They look a bit like flying raptors. ^^

Forgive me if I'm not remembering this right, but was it briefly explained in game if Dragons were able to influence people in general or if it was only Dragoons they could influence/mind control? I'm having trouble trying to remember the specifics about this from the Dragoon questline.

i had to think about exactly what you ment, i put it into google and it came up with a LS group for FFXIV, coincidence?

They were listed under threats on the official site, so i think it means the dragons use them as the frontline expendable units in their assaults upon Ishgard. But it could be under threats because of wild wyvern too, so maybe it could be interpreted the other way around? not sure. They didn't explicitly say for whom they would be serving, but my gut says the dragons.

Oh I meant as in 'goons' being a term for henchmen, so wyverns are essentially dragons' henchmen, hence dragon-goons. It's a lot less witty now that I'm explaining it. In fact, you've highlighted to me that it probably wasn't that witty to begin with.

Or maybe that LS thought it was and so I'm just giving an old pun given a new spin.

Yeah it does sound like dragoon... like how dragoons are more susceptible to the communion and are chosen by the Dragonseye!?
