I do remember a feature like this in a game i played in the past year it was chatbox auto reply's:
Gone out to eat
Be Right back
On the phone
There was a smarta$$ reply one as well from memory.
It was very handy. Even if they just add bubbles over the head that says AFK would be very useful.
Just implement the search features similar to FFXI. You could leave an away note that anyone could read, even if they were in a different zone.
I forget where i saw it but i remember reading that comment bubbles will be NPC only; They were referring to chat bubbles though and i'm assuming your just referring to a kind of viable AFK notice. In FFXI, People would get an automated msg when they send /tell to someone who is away; maybe that's another feature SE might want to think about adding.
I think this would be a cool idea...But you'll know when someone's away if they set their status to "AFK"
This feature was in XI and in 1.0...it would show an away icon next to their name and in the search feature. But the difference between them was that in XI if you tried to /tell the person it would auto reply with a system message that the player is afk, like mentioned already.
I like your idea though! I think that would be cool. It'd be like your character is a temporary NPC. Maybe if you had a bazaar open, you can set a message that when people would walk by you, they see the bubble message (maybe you're selling certain things while you're afk) and your character can be selling stuff for you while you go walk the dog or bring a friend somewhere! XD That'd be great. I'd like that.
Neat idea, but possible problems include lewd messages, like they do with their Name Surname >.>;;; or retainers.
I think I remember seeing in one of the live letters for the Alpha.
That they had icons beside their names.
Might be worth checking out one of those old videos to see. ;)
i think it would be a good idea if they implement it with a bunch of presets, running through town and seeing afk ppl sort of like NPCs with things to say is more lively than a bunch of ppl sitting doing nothing.
This is a great idea, I think, though just using a preset message would be best, given what people would do with it if they could put what they want. ^^;;
This would be a neat little feature.
This would have been exceedingly convenient during the time that personal bazaars still existed. They people could announce what they were selling. Personal bazaars only didn't work because no one wanted to randomly check people and HOPE they were selling something they needed.
Ragnarok Online actually let you open an afk chat.
Whatever you put as the title it would pop up above your head like a chat bubble.
People we're allowed to come inside (depending on the number of users permitted inside the chat and if there is a password required to get inside) and leave messages for you when you get back. I found actually really convenient.

If they do decide to add this. Lets hope it won't look like anything in the above picture. Most of those are merchants trying to sell wares but you get the point!
I propose characters having tents and afking inside of there.
Meh... When I go AFK, I would smoke a cigarette instead of have a bubble comment.
Our characters are too young to be in bad health. ~.~
True .. I liked the mouse over more ... imagine more than one character are together .. it can lead to ->

This is hte first good suggestion I've seen in a long time. Not even a bubble though, just an auto-reply to tell's and an icon replacing your ls like in xi.
Adventurers will be able to set yourself to AFK status through the use of a command (for example, something like /afk). However, there are currently no plans to implement an automated reply system or a way to automatically remove yourself from AFK status. We'll be looking into these suggestions in the future though. :)
This would work better:
1. Instead of a chat bubble, put a circular "AFK" symbol by their names.
2. Edit the rendering engine so that people with AFK status get rendered last. In other words: NPCs, objects, and people who are actively playing the game have more priority over the servers and people's computers than the AFKers. This will make an AFK-filled Ul'dah less laggy as a result.
Thanks for the info! One question, though... What about a means to automatically go into AFK status after a period of inactivity?
