I'm not much of a fan of eastern dragons, which are basically flying snakes. Western depictions of dragons have them more beastly in appearance and I rather prefer it this way. Eastern dragons would actually look very odd in a final fantasy game, which tends to draw more from western mythology.
i don't really like eastern dragons.. >< they more like serpents than dragons haha
Not a Dragon, but FF needs more of this :p

I'm just upset that evolution favored smaller more agile fauna over mega fauna. Pretty sure that a Velociraptor with wings would survive better than a common chicken. We'd also have irlzies chocobos.
This is a topic I can sink my teethe into!
I love dragons of all types but if I had to pick a favorite...
Western all the way!

I like some of the eastern dragons in short supply like I imagine if something possesses ARR to do player controlled flying I'd be interested in a Spirited Away mount/morph mount (like druid)

Kinda looks like a coeurl lol

But if I had to choose one, western dragons all the way.

I love western dragons
Lets have both.
western dragons, eastern character design.
because no matter how awesome their dragons look, western characters have faces that look like wrinkly, hemorrhoidal butts. with dirty straw for hair. (i'm looking at you, skyrim and AC)
Skyrim mods <3. . . lol Bethesda has never been a winner when it comes to characters. At all, their animations suck, the character models are awkward. The whole character is not very good (compared to other games) lol
With mods though a lot of that doesn't exist so.. I <3 mods lol
Edit: I don't really have a preference of western vs eastern character design - my favorite styles are the ones that try to be realistic though.
I remember this being scary (awesome) when I was very young. The eastern style can be fun as well, being more snake-like, they're just not as imposing.
I did like how D&D did dragons, with Chromatic/Metallic and Evil/Good.
This :)
I hate Skyrim, cause the character appearances makes my eyes bleed; it's the same with the majority of western games.
I love western dragon style though. But i guess it's a matter of context, and design; Some western dragons look weird, and some eastern look cool.
I like the D&D Dragons

let's not forget one of the most famous dragons of all times.

Eastern makes for a better sidekick, though.

Not necessarily.

I tend to prefer eastern (mainly Chinese) ones, but I do like the western ones as well, just not the hollywood movie versions ;)
I adore dragons more than any mystical creature anyways and I really really love Western dragons but I think I prefer Eastern dragons a tiny bit more. I like the fact that they are "snakelike" because it lets them appear so graceful when they move and fly. It doesn't make them look like brute monsters but somehow like mighty royal, spiritual creatures (of course Western dragons can look like this, too, but very often they are depicted as beasts).
Haku from Spirited Away is the perfect example to me. :)
Haku from Spirited Away was definitely one awesome looking Eastern Dragon, and one of the few times I was actually impressed with an Eastern Dragon's design. I really love all dragons. I have somewhat of a dragon fetish (collect stone dragons for my room, play Spyro a lot, read a lot of books about dragons, btw that black dragon that Keith_Dragoon posted on page 1 is in one of the books I own). But if I had a gun to my head and absolutely HAD to state my preference between the two designs, I'd pick western.
They're usually bigger, much more beautiful, a lot more whimsical and intimidating. Oftentimes Eastern dragons look almost harmless; like big snakes that have developed tiny legs and mustaches. lol Western dragons look like they'll rip you to pieces and devour you just to find out how it would feel to crap you out later.
Personally, there is nothing more epic, then tanking a huge (western) dragon in an mmo. The eastern dragons just look frail and serpent like. But standing toe to toe with a huge, powerful winged monstrosity.. weeeee :D

I WANT ALL OF THIS RIGHT HUR UP INS ARR
Edit: This is Monster Hunter for all you plebeians.
I like both
"Dragons take on many forms"
Come to think of it.. I am a dragon.. Born in 1976, the year of the dragon =)
Being a bit of a dragon fan boy... i love all kinds of dragons from all sorts of mythos, all sorts of shapes and sizes. limbed, limbless. I love dragons and to draw dragons. I'd like to see both but they also shouldn't be afraid to push the boundaries of what everyone perceives as the classic dragon either.
Western dragon are monsters in the stories. kinda evil-fearful creature.
Eastern dragon leads to king or lucky...
Just by the myth, you are comparing different images.
so in Eastern myth, the legendary creature are mixed with all kinda creature.
Dragon has rabbit eyes, deer horns, bull's mouth, Camel's head, tiger's paw, eagle's claw, snake body and fish scale...and one more animal I don't know what's that 9-in-1 animal. but it's a holy creature.
PS by the way, there are strong definition for Eastern Dragon... it must have all 9 things... there are also some other similar type such as single horn is one type, no horn is different, no leg is another... so all of these images you guys quoted up there are not exactly Eastern Dragon... they are "the others".
there are several evil creature, like flying tiger:

Taowu: man face, boar teeth, tiger body with super long tail (in the myth didn't say tails...but the following image fit the most...).
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...zgelif-NllyQni
these 2 have more vivid describe of the shape... the other 2 are weird... such as only have head but no body. The other is a dog type creature can't be seen or heard, only attack good people...

Jokes aside...
Western dragons are massive flying creatures.
Eastern dragons are slim and long serpent-like creatures.
This is a good point, for all purposes apples to oranges. I have a Jade Eastern Dragon pointed in some direction in my room, I had no idea that was good luck until my wife was like "wow you know Eastern Culture / Feng Shui?" and I was like "O_o fun what ? can we do this in bed?" lol
With Western Dragons in mind I just thought he was getting ready to fight :P
I love both. <Can we have them?>
I don't know which I like more, I just think that S|E did an amazing job of making Bahamut look like a global catastrophe, compared to the weak-sauce that Blizzard tossed out there.
