Help with Benchmark.

hey, Sorry if this is in the wrong place i did look first and couldnt see a place for it.
I built myself a new rig yestrerday trying in vein to run FFXIV smoothly on re-release.

my old system was

Asus P5N-e Sli
intel Q6700 @2.93ghz
8gb ddr2 ram at 1333
2x xfx GTX260 Black 896mb. FFXIV Benchmark score was High: 2500 Low:3300



new build is

ROG Crosshair V Formula
AMD FX-8350 oc @4.4ghz
16gb ddr3 @ 1600mhz
Asus HD7770 2gb ddr5 FFXIV Benchmark score was High: 2500 Low: 4500


I mean my old rig was really outdated but this new one is miles better isnt it? have i done something wrong? why would they be so similar? :(

So you built a whole new rig for a rather small boost? They're similar because your old rig wasn't so bad as you thought. That's my view anyway.

The new one has gone from DDR2 to DDR3 running at a higher frq, the new card has over 1gb more ram than the previous and the new board can handle crossfire as well as SLI. So I think it's worth the upgrade and you'll be running smooth as silk bro.

Why spend so much money on such a premium board and go for a mid-lower range GPU? Should've went for a cheaper board and a better graphics card. You can find good and much cheaper mobos for AMD CPUs, it's not like they're as expensive as Intel ones. Just my opinion though.

While your new rig isn't exactly top of the line with that GPU, I still think you should be fine with it. Still, I think you could've gotten something better for your money.

Exactly right, DDR2 to DDR3 is a really huge change with that alone even. Not to mention he has double more Ram from 8 to 16. 2.93 to 4.4 Ghz is a Huge change as well. So I wouldn't worry about it bro. everything is fine =).

It's a better system yes, but if he's speaking strictly about playing this game then it's debatable whether it was worth it or not. The game is only going to demand so much from RAM, GPU and processor before having more power becomes redundant. Just looking at what he had/has, I'm guessing the boost came from the better processor. Overall he's equipped to play much better games, but his old build wouldn't have had a problem with FFXIV in particular. ARR isn't too taxing on a computer.

That's about the right score for a HD7770 using old benchmark. It isn't a very powerful graphics card, however ARR isn't as graphics intensive so it should play it well.

hope you understand that the old benchmark would only tell you if you could run FFXIV 1.0. I got 1.9 score and i could play high-med setting without DOF. With other video card i got 2.9 and i could play high setting with DOF so it show you that the benchmark and 1.0 overall sucked if you could run FFXIV med setting with your old system you could play ffxiv 2.0 at high setting without issue.

The old benchmark was wonky at best.
My Q6600 with a GTX570 scored around 1500, but I was able to play at max settings except for AO at 30+ FPS.

I'd wait for the new benchmark before changing anything or worrying. They should be releasing it in next couple of weeks or so.

As others have stated. I would assume it's the 7770.

i know i kinda cheaped out on the gpu but the mobo cpu and ram all at once killed my budget lol i plan on upgrading it but i was expecting better. The Cpu and board are great as far as i can tell and the ram is more than enough.

I wasn't aware ARR was gonna be less demanding that good maybe ill be ok after all.

And i was gonna rebuild anyway i been thinking it for a while the bad Bench score was just the final push.

In terms of my old machine it ran 1.0 ok until i was in populated areas then it sounded like a jet engine... :P

I would say OP that you have chosen a nice upgrade path from what you had.

If anything, I'd say that the most significant upgrade of all was from the CPU. The Core2Duo and Core2Quad are starting to show their age at this point, and I think you made a great decision with the board you chose. Don't listen to some of these other comments lol.

Choosing AMD over an Intel was a great choice too for having the easiest upgrade path, and also, one of the best decisions you made (considering ALL of your hardware) was buying that motherboard. It's solid choice and should not be outdated for a while.

As far as the GPU choice goes, I'd say you chose well too. The 7770 has a great price to performance ratio (best bang for buck). Another thing to consider too for more performance is hybrid CF or whatever AMD calls it. It can drastically improve your graphics output. And although you ran the 260's in SLI (which not all games support btw) the 7770 beats a single 260 and even uses less power.

May I recommend a Solid State Drive as well OP? The technology is a bit better than it was a few years ago, and is also much cheaper. It would compliment your new hardware very well.

Btw for those who haven't noticed this...that 1.0 benchmark is broken.

I can't help but think you just posted this as an E-peen topic though. There are all kinds of topics about the benchmark..
They aren't very similar btw. I build computers and your new one would stomp a mud hole in your old one.
Let's not get into AMD VS Intel plz..
Take that to a tech forum.
AMD is only better cost wise.. Not "upgrade" wise or "capability" wise..
AMD and intel both have the same upgrade capabilities.

Good benchmarks are: Vantage, Catzilla, A new Dawn, Furmark, 3d mark.

thanks, i have a SSD in there too not sure if its operating at optimum speeds as read time isnt much quicker than my old HDD but im researching this as i type lol.

I'm aware the Bench is flawed but i felt a lil dissapointed the improvement wasnt as much as hoped but maybe it is the card i dunno?. running a 3D Mark_11 now i have screen shot of my previous rigs results to compare. fingers crossed :)

Again sorry didnt know where to post this, and it isnt an Intel vs AMD thing. The only reason i swapped was purely because this board only came as an amd, my first ever built was an asus board so i decided i'd trust them again hench the switch.

If any one gets into an AMD vs Intel debate they are pretty much morons. If the performance was limited by the CPU the low res and high res scores will be nearly the same. There is a wide gap between his low and high res scores, which indicate the GPU is limiting the performance.

A SSD will show no difference in the benchmark since the benchmark is a very small size that can be loaded entirely into memory. A SSD will do wonders for load times in the actually game since it's very large.

You will notice that a HD 7770 is only one step up from a GTX 260. 2X GTX 260 is faster than a single HD 7770 if you have SLI working correctly in full screen. Benchmark doesn't allow full screen, however someone made a DLL to force full screen(google "Ff14bfull-100618.Zip", extract and place DLL in the data folder containing the config.ini and FFXivWinBenchmark.exe files). Your new motherboard supports SLI so I suggest you put those 2X GTX 260 back in or buy another HD 7770. You pretty much downgraded your graphics performance going to a single HD 7770.

The problem is that people falsely assume that getting a new generation GPU/CPU will give them a significant boost. Truth is, if they stay in the same range (low/mid/high), the differences will be quite minor, especially with hardware not making that many jumps lately. An example: I'm still using my 260GTX, and for most MMOs it's still enough to run them at least at 30 fps maxed, with some dips in crowded areas. As for CPU limitations, my old Phenom II X4 still has to encounter a game that maxed it out. My brother uses a similar system, but has a core quad instead of a phenom and his GPU is not factory overclocked. There is no difference in performance between our setups except for me having a SSD.

ARR might be a bit more demanding than an average mmo, but surely not as bad as 1.0 was, I hope. The benchmark is around the corner, so is the beta so imho you should waited till then before upgrading.

I can see why you would say wait and i should have in hindsight but its a project i intend on maxing out over time.

Out of curiosity i swapped in my two 260s and got a score of 5700 on low which is the kinda bump i was looking for. so maybe the CPU, board, and ram are ok i just gotta splash on the better card to have it a little future proof. :)

I'm planning on getting a second GTX550ti for ARR :D

The old benchmark was biased to NVidia Cards. Since you've gone AMD, you can't take any numbers it spat out seriously.

We've also been told that the game has been designed to run on lower end graphics cards. This means that the limiting factor for ARR will not be graphics capabilities but processing capabilities, so good on you for pumping up the processor.

your last pc SLI GPU total can beat HD7770(HD7770 consider entry/mid GPU) but not 7850, any chance change it to HD7850?
Low Res : CPU > GPU
High Res (1080p) : GPU > CPU
in this case, your old pc GPU really helps a lot on High Res benchmark.

I didn't mean my comment like that. I meant its the best bang for buck and AMD is known as such for being an easier upgrade path for consumers. I hate AMD, and I'm complimenting them, no war here. Move along.

Nice rig - as a lot have people have already stated; the only thing that needs upgrading to give you a beast of a setup is the GPU... To be honest though if you run the two older cards in SLI you will be golden for ARR...

Yeah, nothing wrong with that I suppose. The new CPU and RAM are more future-proof than your old ones anyway. But buying that GPU if you plan to replace it with a better one anyway... why not use your 2x260 in the meantime instead?

I actually wanted to get myself a second 260GTX, but the power consumption and the fact ffxiv didn't scale properly (=no performance increase) made me decide against it. Now that the devs said ARR will scale better with SLI, it could make sense to get one after all.

What most people are forgetting that are defending the purchase is that Raedon and NVIDIA cards work differently for graphics. So the GTX260s in SLi were better than the newer 7770s.

And no one is being harsh I think. OP asked for our opinion and we're just giving it. Otherwise OP I would just hang tight with what you have and wait as was mentioned for the new benchmark. :)

This exactly. Run the GTXs and maybe if you can return the 7770s. Then if and when you can afford newer/better GPUs you can buy them IF you feel the need to. ;)

you maybe right. And i cant find a graph or chart with my actual 7770, i can only fing the 1gb version where mine is the 2gb version. but the 2x 260s did have the better score. Think i'll hangfire on buying til i have played with ARR Bench.

if Square have indeed made the game and benchmarks Nvidia bias then it stands to reason to stick with them as the sole purpose of this build was to continue ARR at a playable level not laggy as my low LVL 8 character shows... and i have legacy status so you can see i couldnt be bothered playing with the bad performance of last rig lol.

so happy this game can take full advantage of my system now!! not many games out there do.

This benchmark is very very cpu dependent and way less gpu dependent. Your low resolution score is faster than me but my high resolution score is higher than yours but that just goes to show you how cpu dependent the benchmark is. 2.0 should fix this issue and will use more video card than the first release, which is good, because it will be scaleable to a wide variety of systems. I think you will be able to run 2.0 on high with no problem. My onboard graphics on my A8-3870K CPU scores only like 1300-1400 on the benchmark but the actual game on medium settings actually runs prety good, only choppy when in town.

My system:

AMD A8-3870K CPU @ 3.4GHz
8GB PC1600 DDR3
nVidia Geforce 560 Ti OEM 1.25GB, 336 cuda cores, previously a radeon 5850 till it died.

My rig will only score about 3900 on low and about 3770 on high, showing how cpu dependant the game is, or at least the benchmark is. Low and high shouldnt be so close, cept my CPU is bottlenecking at low, and possibly a little at high too, thats why your 7770 scores higher than me on low, but doesnt keep up with me at high

I would suspect that if my CPU would overclock to what yours o/cs to, I'd probably score in the 5-6k range on low. I'm an AMD guy when it comes to cpus, and I will be selling the A8 to buy a faster Phenom II CPU. They have one at 3.8GHz and from what I hear, its a beast of a overclocker, so I gotta have it :) For some odd reason, however, My 5850 would score nearly 4200 in low, while my geforce would only get 3900, which the geforce is definately faster ... think its just optimized for radeons better.

I wouldnt worry if I were you. Your system should slice through ARR with ease, as its already been stated that it will be more optimized and less graphic intensive, although still looking just as good :)
