ARR and Voice over IP

I know the best way to conquer any endgame content is to be able to talk with your party members so that things can be done right away. Since everyone is already doing it with Mumble or Ventrilo, it will make sense to ARR to include a Voice over IP option.

Just like Call of Duty and other games, been able to communicate with your party members is really important. I want to do a poll for SE to include a Voice over IP option on ARR. When you join a party, you have a buttom in the UI to activated that Voice Chat.

I think it would be a fun way to social with everyone, specially since ARR is going to have a content finder option and meet new people.

It'll be a long time to convince him now... lol but is mostly because of Language Barrier that YoshiP will not add a VoIP ingame. and ask us to use 3rd party instead.

It would be helpful, as long as I can mute out someone who's abusing it or being rude (followed by a kick from pt if particularly offensive!). Very used to Ventrilo, but even though it takes a few clicks to set it up & start I still find it to be a minor nuisance ._. Loved logging in, getting into a raid, and having to do pretty much nothing to be able to hear the raid leader issuing orders and responding.

Im alllllll for this idea! Less stressful then having to navigate someone to skype/teamspeak/vent and walk them through the setup and still not work>< Vent and skype keep making my mic reallllyyyy low too. I know I always feel a little sad when I log onto XI and can't chit chat cause most of my ls are chatting via xbox live and I just cant justify 60$ year to watch my netflix and chat -sometimes-

From a practicality point of view, VoIP is a service that takes up a fairly large amount of bandwidth. Sure, a lot of games now include VoIP services, but SE isn't going to bother bogging down their own servers with that kind of traffic when there are better/faster services already availible. Not when they have to also contend with the longer transit times to the international servers and the afformentioned language barrier. As for PS3 players, I expect someone could fashion a Ventrilo and/or Mumble bridge as an addon.

Edit: After some research, Mumble is an open source project and would therefore be relatively easy to write a bridge for as an Add-on. Ventrilo, on the other hand, does not distribute any sort of source or API, so much more difficult (though technically still possible, count me out on actually trudging through all of the work required to do it though).

Personally I think implementing voice chat in game is a waste of time when 3rd party apps do it very well. Voice chat is something Sony should have built into the PS3 OS so game developers don't have to waste time implementing it.

So my answer is NO to in game voice chat.

PS3 players are going to need a VOIP method, but the problem is that if you enable VOIP after the game is released and people have found their 3rd party alternatives, it's not likely to do well. There would be no reason to switch from Mumble/Skype/Steam/Vent to in-game VOIP.

Doesnt matter what we want. it's not going to happen. Just use skype/vent/mumble/TS.

Why should SE invest in additional infrastructure capacity to support ingame VoIP when a lot of people use existing methods already? Plus, mic spamming is usually a bigger problem with built in VoIP- it's a lot more functional when you use your own voice server (or skype) and thus have more direct control over who can talk.

SE needs a age to compete with other MMOs, just having the option to do the voice chat without the third party software would be great. I been frustrated of joinning parties for endgame content like dark-light gear parties and people not having the software ready. They don't need to talk but need to hear the commands from party leader.

All of the oh I don't have the software let me install it or I cannot connect what were the settings again? Plus PS3 players would really benefit from it. I bet they will get the voice chat requierd, oh you don't have it? Sorry cannot use you in the party. With having regional servers the bandwith is not going to be bad and it does not have to be ready by release but it would be a great improvement in the social and party aspect of the game.

"Use your smart phone / laptop" is not the answer btw lol (although maybe because of ps3 physical limitations there is no good answer, I know Sony didnt build one in because they are lamurs :D)

I think it would be useful (specially for ps3 players), but it would take them a bit to design one at least mildly on par with a popular PC alternative.

benefit =/= problems, yes but Yoshi already stated why they wont do it, no matter how many time you say.

None, they can use a smartphone with the app installed, or a laptop/desktop nearby,.

a TON of devices now have skype/ts apps.

For my LS/FC, they don't have to talk, but they do have to listen.

Wish it did, the PSP has it but not the PS3. Would be nice for me and my parents to communicate with video chat and have my kids talk via video.

Anyways for the official VOIP service in-game it's not going to happen per YoshiP so that's that. JP thread also talks about voice chat and I mentioned that it will give advantage over players who use vs who don't specially for stuff such as PvP or full alliance raids being implemented in ARR. Some JP players for one don't want their voices to be heard and don't want to break their image of their character...

Also I think on legal end it's going to be hard when there are disputes via voice since nothing is recorded and for SE to record all the conversation just in case some issue may arise is just additional cost they don't need at this time imo.

Most already uses skype, vent, ts, munba, etc services so just stay with those.

At later time when the VOIP users start taking over the PvP and other contents over none VOIP users then they may start thinking something but at this time it's just too much hassle for them imo.

Probably it's harder to even get it or will never happen now that Microsoft bought out Skype. PSP and Vita has it, Vita probably was able to get it since it runs the same code as PSP.

No it doesnt, even if it did the PS3 wouldnt multitask it lol

The ps3 is a special child - powerful but special. (Have to learn its oddities to use it properly, which is the Xbox's benefit that its so usual and normalized).

While not a perfect solution, you can download the entire Mumble source code here. Which means some enterprising developer (okay I'll get to it later if there's time/interest) could refactor the pertinent client code into actionscript as an add on.

Yeah, that's probably going to be a big nono, since the Vita got it prior to buyout...but now you can likely expect some issues post buyout lol.

Well there is a way for Ventrilo to be install on PS3.. :P but yea.. better not do it if you are not confident in it.. :D

this topic been made loads of time SE said it would take take and money and talking to SE to make it. Top of that they said they can't control harassment over Voice chat in there own game so it be harder on them.

I wonder if they could provide a ps3 only service that let you send into that open source chat client (doesnt have to be this one, but there would need to be some method setup by SE or setup-able by the player to connect as a ps3 user to voice chat). In that way the ps3 players can talk to the PC players so long as there is a third party server (which would receive and then distribute the data), which means SE wouldn't have to censor any of it.. (still would cost money though lol).

I just dont think its idealistic to expect all ps3 players to have a laptop, their ps3 by their tower, or a smart phone. Put a warning on the ps3 game box "if you dont have one of the following our intense dungeons are going to be a giant PIA, also people will be less likely to try a dungeon with you".

This. I've already got Vent and TS and Mumble. Eve offered in game VoIP, but I never touched it specifically because I had other third party tools.

I suppose it'd be handy for PS3 players though, I'll concede that.

Not a lot of linkshell ask you for TS,mumble,vent and the once that do most of the time they don't even talk. If you smart enough to learn how to do dungeon without the help someone telling what to do every step then you be fine. Maybe ps4 can have 3rd party chat system and run games at the same time i know that not a fix for the ps3 but noting can be done sadly.

In the final boss battle, I was surprised that a leader can pop some number icons on top of monsters for his/her party members to see what to kill next. Even, sub-mobs respawn around the boss, a leader can modify all icons like "change the number 1 icon on top of the boss to cancel" without telling party members what to do. It seems we can fight everything even without a keyboard or headset.

If you have played Portal 2 online then you would know what I mean though.

Just don't get the game on PS3 and you're golden..

Even with in-game VoIP, I will still be using vent.
