They wouldn't let me have 'Nique' because apparently in another supported language it's a swear word... in my haste to play I unknowingly called myself Niqote the Miqote... dang it!
Possible name change 2.0 pleases me lol
Long story short: Nique Amrita is a long running OC of mine, but Nique is my IRL nickname too ^^
Zetsubou Shita!

Aeka Masaki (ah-eh-ka), the First Princess of Jurai, from the Tenchi Muyo OVA series. Back in the day, I was a member of the Tenchi Muyo mailing list, hosted by Hitoshi Doi.
My Chocobo is named Ryuuoh, after Aeka's tree/space ship. My path companion is an Elzen named Yosho. My retainers are a Roegadyn named Amagasaki, and a Mi'qote named Mihoshi.
When I played PSO, my char was a Hunewearl named Aeka.
Nutty, I know~~
Mine is original.
Warlock Warlord the best high rank a Taru could have in the Federation of Windurst, evoking fear and respect.. inspired on the coolest Taru in FFXI
Robel-Akbel ..aka doomed parallel Vanadiel's Karaha-Baruha
http://tisiphoneffxi.files.wordpress...obel-akbel.png
The regular Karaha-Baruha character had same blonde hairstyle too :D
Chose that to not be seen as a name over my head but more what i am (as in my rank)
EDIT: Adding in my Chocobo name which is Bomber my Taru name from FFXI ,small size Taru BLM...a big name for something so small dropping nukes left and right and getting himself killed XD
German/Romanian for Iron Gram.
Interesting thread so far and I'm eager to read more responses. ^^
Nothing terribly exciting for my own response though.
My first name is original with no particular meaning or reference. Last name is just something I chose because I decided on Moonkeeper and wanted something to do with the night.
Murasaki Shikibu, an 11th Century diarist / poet.
people seems mistaken my name for a certain red headed, flat chested brat, but no, this isnt based on Slayer
Rina is acronym of my real name, while inverse is, well an inverse of myself
EDIT since everyone start posting their companion and chocobo
companion name: Reina = QUeen, and turn out she does have that bossy personality that befit her name lol
chocobo name: Adrian, my first ever gold chocobo back in my FFVII day
EDIT 2 retainers name FTW
Fir: as in tree 'Fir'. I'd like the idea of having someone that fully dedicated to me as a retainer, solid, unmovable like trees and mountains. but no mountain names. which bring me to my second retainer
Prudence: I guess (and hope) that this name is self explanatory. though back then I think i dedicated this to two of great fictional females character with the same name, Prudence Beresford and Prudence Halliwell
Azzi is an abbreviation of Azrael, and Azrael is the archangel of death
Punainen Drak is an amalgamation of Finnish and Czech that translates into "Red Dragon". It's also the name of an OC of mine, and was inspired by this epic song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp9i3zm_64A
I've been Loony BoB online since I was around 11-12 years old. That was my nickname in intermediate school in New Zealand. The BoB part originated from Terminator 2, I remember watching the Terminator be introduced as "Uncle Bob" and I loved the idea of being an Uncle Bob. So that stuck. The Loony bit just got thrown in because I was a bit of a nutter at the time, my mates tacked that on. My cat's name was Bob, however, and that combined with the way I would 'sign' my nickname (BOB, but with a small enough O that it looked lower case) meant that Loony Bob very quickly evolved into Loony BoB. And so my nickname (and, a year later, my online username) for the next 15 years of my life was born. If you ever search for "Loony BoB" online, you'll probably find about 50 different accounts of mine. :p
Cobalt, based on the blue Hue Cobalt Blue (and no... not because it's one of the most traded mats in-game, didn't know that when I picked the name >_>). Also based on an OC i used to draw.
Azura, based on the word Azure, based on this game's 'artifact of doom'.
The Chinese/Kanji/Hanja middle character of my Korean name is 石 which means "Stone." One of the Japanese On readings of this character is pronounced "Shaku." (My guardian deity, chosen from my rl birthday in December, is Althyk the Keeper whose element is Earth)
My path companion is named Kokorai (a lalafell), derived from raikou (雷光) which means "lightning."
My chocobo's name is Ciel, french for "sky" and is also the name of the legendary chocobo from Final Fantasy: Unlimited.
I couldn't find a name for my original FFXI character and I was in a hurry to play to I tried Kain (Legacy of Kain) but it was taken, so I tried Arkain because "Ark" sounded cool (and still does!) and that didn't work too so I just messed with it a bit and ended up with Arkine.
When XIV beta started, I couldn't come up with a last name and wished I could leave it blank and that when it hit me, I started looking for "Blank" and "Nothing" in google translator and ended up with "Rien" which is french, then I lost my beta account so I had to figure a new last name and I had a Van Hellsing DVD on my desk so I just used Van and ended up with Vanrien.
Its ironic that my name is almost entirely inspired by vampires even though I really really hate vampires.
Back in elementary school I drew a half dragon, half man (Human with dragon wings, tail and eyes) wearing full plate armor who rode a dragon like the mounted Calvary Dragoons. I decided to name him Keith because it sounded like a cool first name and choose Dragoon since he rode a dragon like a Calvary Horse and it also sounded cool.
Most people think my name is related to the FF job but I didn't even know what FF was back then, the name just stuck. Now that I read that aloud the character I drew is kinda similar to the Panzer Dragoon guy accept Keith does most of the work with his many weapons.
He looked like this but less short and more evil

My chocobo's name is Aionios(Ioneos) which I just took from an anime "This Ugly Yet Beautiful World" Who was the robot companion of one of the main characters. Name sounds cool so I used it.
I am a huge fan of this namesake. Also close to my real name. ^.^
'Enkidoh' is how 'Enkidu' was spelt in SE's original English translation of FFV for the 'FF Anthology' release on the PS1, Enkidu being Gilgamesh's companion in the ancient Mesopotamian work The Epic of Gilgamesh. I chose the name at random out of an ancient issue of EGM which had a FF guide in it originally when I needed an original username for eBay. The name stuck with me ever since (I used it also for my FFXI character). :D
As for my FFXIV character's surname of 'Roux', it's a French word derived from the same Latin word as the well known word 'rouge' which means 'red' (it's also the name of a cooked dish made from wheat and butter) - I thought it was appropriate given her bright red hair, but my partner had a hand in it too - he named his character's surname also as Roux first (for what reason I have no idea), so I thought it would be cute to show our characters connection to each other by also choosing Roux for my character's surname. It's a decision I now kinda regret though as he left the game ages ago and I have no idea if he's really serious about coming back for ARR. *sighs*
Yeah..nique in French is the equivalent of our F-bomb XD
Mine is a Germanic variant of the name "William"..."Vilhelm", but I removed the second L and just made "Vilhem" out of it.
The last name "Dijkstra" is Dutch, and is a lil homage to my friend out in the Netherlands, whom I met in summer of 2010, after 10yrs of knowing her online. :3 It' pronounced "dike + stra" and means "from the dike" '-'b
For FFXIV, I came up with the name Wilan solely based on phonetics.
My old nick was in english, but most of my friends (I'm from Italy) used to spell it wrong, and everytime it hurted my ears D: So when I put together Wilan I tried to make a name that sounded more or less the same in every language I knew of (check for italian, english, spanish, japanese, not completely sure about german and french) while still sounding nice enough.
As for the surname, Serulia, it does have some kind of meaning, as it comes from Cerulean, like the shade of blue's name, being blue my favourite color.
My chocobo instead is called Tilaridz, which is a slight variation of Tilarids, an old runic incision on an ancient spearhead, one of the earliest discoveries of futhark runes. The incision is speculated to be the name of the spear itself (among other hypothesis), meaning "the one which goes straight to the goal". Since my original plan of calling my chocobo Aria (Air in italian) was screwed up when I found out it was a male, I had to think of another name quickly, and Tilaridz sounded very appropriate for a Chocobo.
Thal Icebound is a name I've used in a bunch of games. Thal is German for valley, making it essentially mean valley among the ice.
It was only after character creation that I discovered the name Thal had a place in XIV lore, so I devised an XIV-specific backstory for him that had him born to parents of the over-enthusiastically zealous type in the Arrzanaeth Ossuary. It figures that he worships Menphina and would prefer to hang about the Milvaneth Sacrarium instead.
Outrageously geeky, but I always loved classical Greek mythology, and my own name, Andy, derives from the Greek name Andreas, which means man, or warrior. Lycaeus is a surname of deities such as Apollo [which also happens to be the name of my Chocobo] and Zeus, and has many translations, but it can mean 'of the light' or 'wolf slayer'. Andreas Lycaeus, therefore, at a stretch, can translate to Warrior of Light, plus it rhymes, and it includes my real name, which I think is cool :)
Akujin - A name I've had since I was around 15 or so, began role playing online in html format chat rooms. Akujin became my main character, basically my 'trademark' as far as that goes. Throughout the years one thing remained the same, hearing or seeing the name Akujin always related it back to me. I've used the name throughout several other games I've played because it's such a novelty to me now. Originally I was looking for unique names to use for a character model, and I came across it somewhere else. When i started to do some translations on it, since it derives from japanese words. I always came out with Aku (evil) jin (person/god) so it also suited with the character model I was using quite well.
Aetheoryn (the surname I chose for XIV) was random actually. I cant remember where I actually came up with the name originally, I thought it was latin but that may be the surname I use with Akujin currently, which is Amydh. It just suited the XIV world very well because of the 'Aether' and 'Aetherytes' that we use in game, so mostly people see it as a play on the name from there, though that was honestly by concidence.
The thing I dont understand is why people have such a hard time typing it out in game lol
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gensai_Kawakami
I was reading the manga Kenshin 10 years ago and found this name, except it's written "Genzai" in Kenshin.
Then I started to dislike the -ai at the end, and some people were already just calling me "Genz" so I dropped the end.

Best game ever!
So many interesting stories :3
I think the most fascinating one was Niqote so far :D
Well I tend to think of the character first, then I create it and lastly try to find a fitting name.
So with Meo I had a tomboyish, outspoken character for the first time and that's why I wanted a very direct name with simple meaning and a first name which doesn't sound too feminine.
The most simple name would be "catgirl" but that sounds just horrible and not like a name at all.
So I started searching for the words 'cat' and 'girl' in lots of different languages.
I ended up with the Thai word for cat, 'con meo' and the Gaelic 'cailin' for girl aaand...basically, that's how Meo Cailin came to be :o
Since English is not my native language I didn't realize for months that 'meo' is very close to the English 'meow' which is a bit annoying because everytime I discuss names with people everyone is like "Oh I know, your name is like 'meow' because you are a cat, right?!"
I mean..no, that's not it. It's not the same. It bothers me when people say that @_@°
My companion's name is Kyle because he looks a bit like a Kyle I know in real life (male Midlander). It's also a Gaelic name (I just love them <3) and means 'straight' which fits his straightforward character rather well.
My beloved chocobo is called 'Jiro'.
I got my chocobo like a week after my friends and everyone went with a name which ends with -o.
Since Jiro ends with -o and is a very common pet (dog) name, that's the name he has to live with now ^-^
My characters name is a bit of a mixture of mine and my grandmothers names.
Gareld is from my middle name, just with the a and e switched round. Mcreadie is my grandmother's maiden name, though it dropped a C. I really want to be able to add that C into my character name when 2.0 rolls around. I tried doing "McCreadie" in 1.0 but I couldn't, so I had to settle for "Mcreadie".
Edit for devs: Thats something I'd like to ask if any dev is reading this. Is there a particular reason behind why there can't be two capital letters in names? Is it possible to maybe have at least two capital letters in last names for 2.0? Odd question and request I know, but it doesn't hurt to ask ;)
My Eve character is Taak Coram. I played him for so long that it felt like my real name, so I've been using Coram in almost every game since. Llen was originally Len, but I realised Llen looked prettier. All original.
Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil! \o.O/
...yes I made all 3
Skye Windbinder.
I wanted a name that meant freedom and power, because I intended to make my character a primarily magic user; a true sorcerer. Magic users have always fascinated me in stories. They control the elements and bend reality. It's kind of a chaotic freedom from the natural order of things.
The name "Skye" is a unisex name that means "cloud" in Norse tongue. Can't get more free than a cloud drifting in the sky. And "Windbinder" is a name I came up with that implies the controlling of the wind, the most elusive of elements, giving a sense of real power. So, that's the story behind my name.
Zenaku Yamada
I was looking for a name that would out last itself i'm very picky when it come to names and get bored of them quick. I had the name Zenshiro yamada before but i just got bored of it and the name look longer ingame. So i went with Zenaku Zen=light and Aku=Evil i was looking for a name that had meaning and would out last itself. Then i look for a nice last name noting NA made sense so i went with other Japanese last name. I look for one that would fit and go well with zenshiro which ended up being very nice it make more sense with that then Zenaku. But like i said i dislike how zenshiro look ingame so i ended up picking Zenaku. I pick Zenaku because it had ZEN and i'm use to people calling me that ingame so why not pick other name with the same letters so it be easy for me to know who talking to me.
Yamada was a nice last name and will known in japan and it sound really nice so i pick that with my first name. Yamada mean mountain rice field :) so i ended up picking it and never look back.
That the story of my char name very simple and nice i love how short it look in game not to long like my FFXI char lol.
Both my main characters and my alts names are partially drawn from my RL name and partly made up.
Violet is apart of my RL name and I was stuck for what to use as a last name for a little while till I asked the next family member I saw who came up with Solaria which sounded perfect makes me think of a violet sun. Chocobo is called Raith, sort of pulled from Wraith but dropped the w.
Katani Gin my alt gets her name from using another part of my RL name with some creative add ons and Gin because it means silver in japanese to go with her silver hair. Her chocobo is called Chichiri after Izanas chocobo in FFType-0.
Azarim Erro.
Azarim was an entirely made up name; I was muddling with names and it clicked for some reason.
Erro - taken from Neutiquam Erro, "I am not lost". My character has his own place and story in the game - the real life me and him are the same, yet distinct, personas of myself. Thus, as Azarim Erro in Eorzea, 'I am not lost' in my life.
Companion: Joscelin. Was researching about Edessa, and Count Joscelin I and II snagged my notice. One of the cities that brought about the ancient tradition of Christianity, and a long history from Roman to Christian to Greek and then Crusaders rule, Joscelin was the last count of Edessa before he was driven out.
Chocobo: Svadilfari - in Norse mythology, the stallion who, with Loki, fathered Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse. Probably obvious that I intended him for the chocobo breeding that hopefully will come.
All my online chars are usually called Undrentide but in ffxiv i had to shorten it to Undie Nilleshna....Undrentide was chosen as its taken from the poem Sir Orfeo where the kings wife goes off with her maidens and falls asleep at Undrentide (the time of day magic is allowed to happen) and is taken away by the fairies...when she comes back she is driven mad with grief and tears herself to pieces... Nilleshna is the title of a song by Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, and i just liked the sound of the word.
When I first played though FFT, one of my best characters was my Black Mage/Calculator named Clive. He was one of my starting chemist and I used him a lot. When I played through a second time, I got in a random battle with an ally in it. The ally was a Black Mage named Clive that joined my party after the fight. My though was, "Guess I am fated to have a Black Mage named Clive." From then on, the name Clive is a name I give to any mage character I play. The 'C' slowly became a 'K' from playing on-line game and Clive was generally taken.
"Arcturus" is a recurring firearm in the Final Fantasy series. It's also a significant star in ancient and modern astronomy, being the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, deriving such titles as "Keeper of Heaven." The name comes from Greek mythology meaning "Protector of Arktos." It's also a name that I've been accustomed to using since the days of EQOA.
"Knightscreed" was inspired both the Wolfscreed supporting character name from Red Dead Redemption, as well as the concept of the Knights' Oath in "Kingdom of Heaven."
