In FFXI whenever people inspected your gear you would be notified in the log.
I like it when I know people are looking at my equipment. ^.~
I noticed this was absent in FFXIV, should it be brought back?

I'd say no. It kind of fails all my attempts at stalking >.>
It was taken off due to the fact that JP always bitch and complain to NA for checking them. You can even get ban for spam checking someone -.- that how far JP got mad about it. I blame the translation dev for that one tho because what i heard from a JP is that it say something else like i look you up and down so i blame SE for that one lol.
not only this, but also achievements for being examined like 500, 1000 and 5000 times for the maximum epeen effect.
Iirc on the japanese side it read like " _____ stares at you intently" which was taken quite badly D: I've only ever had one instance of /checking someone and them totally flipping out on me though. Usually most were cool about it and I'd /bow or something to say thank you and it was usually well received.
I remember a conversation about this a looong time ago, I think it was on KillingIfrit? Could be wrong though>< and it went on to say why the Japanese players disliked the /check feature, it described the translation on their side but it seemed that English speakers and Japanese speakers were at an impasse. Some English were like "Well you know it is a bad translation, so don't take it personally." and some Japanese were like "But you know it annoys us, yet you still do it".
Personally I don't mind if the text comes back or not, it was nice it not being there. Even if I was in really nice gear and that little message popped up I'd be like "Awww crap, what do they think?", though it was nice when I'd get the occasional compliment, overall I felt kinda paranoid seeing that message though... There was a lot of e-peen stroking in FFXI and if you didn't have XYZ item you were considered gimp so I think that kinda added to the nerves haha.
If it does come back, I'd like a decent translation on both sides - something akin to "_____ browses your equipment" instead of "______ stares at you intently"; with the option to shut off said message if you so desire.
I remember people getting upset when they saw that someone examined them.
I remember people having fake 'examines you' emotes macro'd and spamming them around the Jeuno AH :)
Personally in FFXI I always found people checking me without asking first as very rude (and not just because of the slightly sexual innuendo of someone 'checking out' - ala, perving - on a female character), as often such checkers would then send offensive tells to me criticizing my choice of equipment/job-sub combo because it didn't match their narrow-minded idea of what gear I should be wearing or job/sub combo I should have (and no, I wasn't wearing anything gimp or ridiculous, or had a stupid job/sub combination, I just experimented with gear that worked well for me). However, if someone actually asked me if they could check my gear, I usually said yes. :) It just basically came down to manners and courtesy.
And yeah, I often got spamchecked in places like Jeuno as well - usually I made my annoyance known by saying in emote "/Enkidoh feels examined ><" or, more rarely and crudely" "/Enkidoh pulls out her knife and says "the next one to check me without asking loses their eyes!" :P
Hence not having to worry about that in FFXIV was a major improvement in my opinion - one of the things FFXIV actually got right at the start. :P So I really hope it's not brought back for 2.0.
i turned that off in XI so i never knew if you checked me or not...... so if they do add it again i hope it has the filter too cause i hate seeing that spam in my chat log
No, as it is annoying and unnecessary ^_^
Answer: NO.
It is annoying enough when someone kicks you out of a group because you don't have high enough equipment melds.
And then there are those who constantly tell you, "Why are you still wearing that Templar gear?" or "You really need to upgrade your gear." Then they tell me my LS stinks because everyone in their LS has better gear.
i always hated it. glad its gone.
I dunno why people are so against this.
I liked when someone checked me out... it meant that for some reason this person paid interest in me and it often lead into a conversation.
It's not all about "your gear sucks" - there is actually a LOT of players that collect gear for looks and idle in them because they like the way it looks and have a totally different set for actual action.
To me it feels that people have very low self esteem if they feel that someone examining through them is rude. If you are wearing the gimpest gear in the universe, who cares, maybe your gear is work in progress?! No one makes laws about what SHOULD be worn and the people who claim they do are just morons who I wouldn't waste my time with anyway.
And if someone has time to critize, I am sure they then have time to help you improve your gear, that's what I always say to ppl who say my gear sucks XD
Furthermore, it's a game and one big aspect of it is gathering gear. This is not a real person going through your underwear drawer.
No, it shouldn't be added to the game. All it did was make people buttholes in XI, and we don't need any more of that nonsense in XIV.
I inspect gear so often out in the field, dungeons, towns.
From my experience in FFXI most people would say nothing if you examined them, but there are always those people, you know those ones.
"WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AT MY GEAR?!??!?!"
Like they were just waiting for you to do it...
I'm always in gimp gear when in town, and very often when I'm doing other stuff like killing mobs for mats, doing leves, hunting for achievements etc. Basically, my best gear is only worn when doing dungeon raids with LS.
I wear what I like and most of the time I do not care what people who see me running in my pretty clothes think of me, but I do have a limit. After a certain amount of time, the jackasses who want you to know that they examined you, and use it as an excuse to comment on your sucky gear, WILL get on my nerves, sooner or later. Even if I toggled it off, if they didn't know I don't care to know whether I've been checked out, they'd still /t me to be douchebags, andsomelots of people don't want to help you by giving you advice on how to improve your gear, even if you genuinely wanted to know. If they wanted, they could examine you without the message poping up then /t you and ask if you need help anyway. No, some people just want to be jerks, and as I said, after a certain amount of them has /t me to prove that they're jerks, I DO get annoyed. Sheesh, even as I write this I''m getting flashbacks from FFXI and it's getting me infuriated ._.
And no, I don't really want to bother blacklisting them, if I don't have to, nor do I really see the need for a text prompt. If someone near checks me out I can usually spot the head movement, if they're checking me from way far away, I care even less. Not like I'm going to hunt for the person standing at the complete opposite of the camp who checked me and check them back, just based on a useless text message. . . .
tl;dr Examining jerks can be ignored and brushed off to a point.
My issue wasn't that people were examining me. My issue was that I was examining other people (and I still play FFXI, so it is still an issue for me). I often examine people -- usually because I like the way their gear looks -- and other times because I am wondering what job can wear the gear.
At any rate, I have grown self-conscious about examining people because I get distracted very easily and so I OFTEN go to examine someone then close it before I look through the gear -- only to open it again -- and close it before I finish -- only to examine them a third time to finish it. @_@ I do that all the time and I feel really bad about it.
I love inspecting people's gear...but I'd rather not notify them about it. And if it does notify them, I hope they can toggle that notification off if it annoys them.
But usually, if someone examines ME, I respond by examining THEM, and it usually ends with me complimenting them on one of their gear pieces ._.
In closing, I am sorry to the people that I spam examined!
You know, I actually think that you have been quite unfortunate.
The people that has had an issue with my gear and cause trouble about it is in one hand for me and I played FFXI for 6 years - Or maybe I was just so 1337 :P (lol just kidding!) But I am rly sorry that you have had ppl pestering you, it's never nice. Maybe that's why it would be great to have it either on or off.
Omg I did that too, I still do... And for this reason I completely understand why people want it away... lol
However... this has also led to some funny conversations with the person I was examining. Communication is the key to most of the issues to be honest. A quick "omg sorry I examined you so many times but I love the jacket you're wearing and I wonder how you got it" erases all the spams in the world.
I'm all for this. I didn't mind it at all when people checked me back in XI. I kinda liked knowing when someone did, actually.
Maybe ._. but I loathed that feature in XI. For me it was as bothersome as the gold seller shouts in some other games >.< If only everyone was polite /daydream
The question popping into my mind constantly, though, is why do we need even need it? And then weighting in on the pros and cons of such a feature, as well as the general usefulness.
Oh, and I too tend to do the same thing as Hestern and you o_o I examine, forget what I saw, re-examine, forget what I saw, then examine same people yet again >.< So I wouldn't be too surprised if I saw a /slap coming my way :x
I really don't care to know when someone examines me and I rather I not get the message.
I don't mind there being a log setting you can turn on to see this, which is off by default.
Um everyone that has an issue with this know SE is doing a gear score in ARR (or at least I thought they were discussing it)
Wouldn't this bring up the exact same concerns you have about the /examine? (your too gimp, don't want you in group)
i hope gear score does not make it i think that bullshit and unfair. FFXI was great and i did just fine just like any other dps without having best gear i still did about the same or even better dps due to the fact that i don't die doing a high number then have to wait for 5min each time they die i gain more dps overall.
If there going to be a gearscore then so be it but i hope it does not become i can't enter/ do this dungeon without a 1.400 gear score points like wow.
A couple things,
1. We can already check each other's gear, you just don't know when people are actively checking you out....so basically, all the judgements happen, but they happen without your knowledge.
2. This community 'should' be more understanding as this game encourages wearing 'lesser' gear for material melds. Keep in mind, many people already judge your gear before attempting a raid...but that is for a different are you prepared reason.
Maybe a middle ground approach would be nothing gets entered in the other players chat log when you check them, but instead your character does. 'Admiring' emote automatically when you check someone. This way, the observant player will catch a check, but it might not seem as skeeevy to people who are offended by the text.
Well, what I did in FFXI...
/examine someone just for curious...
I got /slap...
What did it mean!? o.o
Someone said it's rude to check someone? Yeah, that's right. =/
I never understand why this was ever an issue for anybody in XI. If you had a problem with the chat dialogue informing you that you've been 'checked out', then filter it out... period. Players will continue to examine you whenever they feel the need or desire, as they should, this is a MMO. As said earlier in the thread, occasionally you may examine someone 3/4 times back to back, not to intentionally annoy them (as if a few lines a dialogue on the chat window should annoy someone in the first place...), but because you may be actively doing other things and never got to finish 'examining' in the first place. Whether or not you see the dialogue, you will still be constantly 'checked out' in any remotely worthwhile MMO.
What actually DID used to annoy me were those players in XI who apparently got so annoyed with being looked at, they actually would setup a macro/bot/something (never fully figured it out cause I guess I didn't care THAT much) that would "blink" them everytime someone attempted to check them out. At first I just thought they were really quick and happened to be idling staring at their character waiting for someone to check them... but later I realized they had to be using something.. You shouldn't be able to all-out block being checked, but they exploited gear swaps in order to do just that. As long as in ARR we can always examine other players, whether or not a dialogue is displayed should be left up to the individual player.
I usually examine everyone because I like to see if they have something I don't know about that may be better than what I have. If they do have something better I figure out where to get it. It would feel a little silly to ask everyone first for permission when the game feature allows it.
Dont need it with a toggle, dont need it without a toggle.
dont need it.
