Do you think SE is purposely leaving out most of the current players because their opinions may be a little too biased? SE mentioned trying to attract new players and what better way to do so than by bringing in mostly new players to the beta? I suppose splitting it evenly between old and new players would be the best way to go...this way old players get their say in the alpha and new players can offer a new perspective.
Yoshida mentioned that most XIV players haven't played another MMO or have only played XI so their ideas of what makes a good MMO may not be good ideas at all. Also, publicly admitting this would surely anger fans, which is maybe why they refuse to tell us how the selection process works.
Idk, this is just a thought. What do you guys think? Sorry if there is already a similar thread. I'm not upset or anything. I hope the people participating in the alpha test do their best to try and make ARR a better game with their feedback and participation :)

Every time the argument about people not getting into alpha pipes up this argument shows up somehwere in it.
That said, Yoshida made a huge post about that and how the alpha is going that will have an official translation PLUS Subligar-man is working on it too. So wait for that, please. -

Just because there is a vocal minority that didn't get into the FIRST phase of global alpha testing doesn't mean they are leaving out current players over new ones. A good portion of my linkshell got in and we have done every piece of content 1.0 had to offer multiple times. The thing is, none of the people who got in are saying it on the official forums because of the NDA which leaves only the whiners that didn't get in.

I think their intents shall forever be unknown to us. Without access to their data, we can't even actually say they've left out most of the current players. Using anecdotal evidence to speculate is kind of....erroneous.
My opinion? I think it's just plain arbitrary who gets in. All those questions on the application don't really mean that much fro what I can see. I see them as throwing invites every which way and hoping it ends up ok. But I do say that could be wrong, since it's just my opinion.
Those of us who already play are pretty loudmouthed about everything. I think this is what accounts for the vocalization of disapproval we see here concerning how it went down this first round of alpha. -

To be fair, as a fan of Final Fantasy, should it bother you that they are trying to get old / less interested players back into FFXIV: ARR?
Nope. It sure as hell shouldn't.
Does it bother me? Sure. I'd love an invite, but it doesn't ruin my day or compel me to complain on the internet about how it went down. I'd rather they send the invites to try to convince people who are on the fence, not those of us who will play it regardless. Hell, I'll sub to ARR for years simply because I believe in SE and I appreciate the amount of entertainment they have provided me over the course of my life.
The best way I feel they could deal with it (Not that they even have to) is just have rotational selections. I don't want to play the alpha for long. 3~6 hours straight would be fine for me to get a complete sense of where the game is going, how it plays, and what I should expect. I'd then gladly let someone else give it a go.
Alas, that's just not how it's being done, and you have to accept that.
