As much as I'm loving the alpha videos...

...I do kind of wish they'd show a little more actual gameplay. As in, battling, quests, enemies, dungeons, any dungeon puzzles?, chocobo combat/breeding, Housing (Even just the GC stuff since I heard they said individual housing wont be available at launch?), etc...

I love the scenery, don't get me wrong...but do you think just showing off the scenery to potential new players is going to draw them in? People will simply be thinking that this is nothing more than a repeat of it's first launch if all they see is a character walking around the town.

Or are the features I'm looking for going to come with beta? I'm possibly just jumping the gun here. I understand alpha tests are mostly just stress tests...and that Squareenix wants to have plenty of surprises but still...do you think they're being a bit too secretive with gameplay?

level cap is lv20 at alpha, its not really flashy at early game, that will make terrible video.

Yea I agree but we''ll be able to play alpha soon and global alpha video I'm sure it will be leaked with battles.

I also doubt that Housing, Chocobo combat/breeding etc will make it into ARR on launchday. Most likely in later patches. So for them to show off those features in Alpha is probably asking a bit too much.

I do hope players dont hype themselves up way too much expecting every features shown to us, will make it Live, the day ARR launches.

I think they're saving all that to the beta.

As much as I love the alpha videos, I wish they would let people outside of Japan play it. I thought we would have heard something by now if it was happening on the 26th.

Half of what you said will not be in alpha, like dungeons, chocobo combat/breeding, housing and GC stuff, what they are looking for is stress tests and making sure the basics work (you can fight, all actions work, you aren't falling through the floor every step, and most importantly jump works) They may have some quests in but not many, if you want to see battle and enemies look at the gameplay trailers.

There's much more in Alpha than you think.

Those things I listed were just examples....I didnt mean they had to show those that I specified exactly...I meant for them to actually start showing what's going to keep the players...oh...I dunno...playing the game....

I hate sounding [sarcastic?],[negative?] (can't think of the proper word here), but they're releasing these videos out to the public. If they're doing this thinking, "Oh, they'll know that since it's an mmo, it's just gonna play like every other" then they have even worse marketing skills than I originally thought.

I dunno about you, but I thought they were actually trying to save this title by bringing in more subscriptions.

You and I know most of the good things that they've brought and are planning to bring, but they're not really informing the people who haven't/wont play(ed) this game or gave up on it after experiencing it's failed launch or just dont stay updated nearly every day about this title like we do.

I've skimmed other mmo forums for discussions on this game, and what I see from a lot of the players is, 'oh wow...they added jumping...because that's new...', 'squareenix has never failed with graphics...but where's the gameplay?' kind of stuff.

Even if they showed some of the things that were already added in the game. Like maybe a clip of players doing the chocobo caravan escort, or a clip of hamlet, or what a new primal fight might be like (Maybe show a wandering primal?), and those are just the tip of ideas they could probably use without spoiling it. (I still don't understand why they have to be so secretive...if they raise hype up too much like they did with 1.0, and people are let down again (though honestly, after playing the game until the end, I dont see it failing as hard as launch), then they're in for a world of hurt (financially))

Granted, they did release that one trailer of the characters going through a dungeon and facing the dragon and showing off the limit break. That's what I believe they need to show more of. Stuff like that. That was, in my opinion, the best trailer for 2.0 that they've done so far.

BUT! I also feel as though I AM jumping the gun (or tent lol) expecting so much out of alpha. I believe I'm being impatient and that could be clouding my judgement. After all, these are just alpha videos. I just pray that future trailers/videos might emphasize a little more on action.

It's just frustrating...I want to see this game succeed...I know it has the potential to.

Also please keep in mind that I'm not complaining that they are granting us, who are unable to have access to alpha, footage of the game. But complaining that since the game is being reborn (instead of just being a stand alone, brand new mmo) they should focus a little more effort on appealing to new players instead of the current players who await 2.0 with heightened breath (I do believe I used the wrong expression here, but you get the idea).

The only reason I could think of is them not showing it knowing they will be changing mechanics around in later versions. Same could be said for unanswered questions we have.

Very true...honestly, I guess I mistitled this thread...it probably should have been something more like "What I hope SE does for future advertising"

It must be tough on them not knowing 100% of what they plan to keep and what is to change...but I would think being in alpha of a pretty much already structured (in terms of lore, gear, style, models, etc) game, at such an advanced stage, with release planned for at most 6 months or so away, they'd have at least a FEW things set in stone more tha the scenery, chocobos, and jumping...


BUT! I am happy (re-watching this alpha video) that the town is starting to flesh out a bit more :)

its sooo much time till release.. its just a question till they release gameplay..

its early alpha shootage, and the gameplay is for sure not in final stage..
i dont think that even the limit break system is balanced out or implemented already.. way too early for gameplay footage.

wait some weeks, you will see it trust me.

and on the other side we saw some "staged" battles within the gameplay trailers.

and i like the idea of SE not to spoil 90% of the gameplay scenes before the game launches... (unlike GW2 where we had hours of gameplay footage 1-2 years before release)

This is one of those " be thankful what you get" things. Were lucky to even get a Video per week ( as of late) consider ourselves lucky. I'm sure will see gameplay, but in Alpha seeing Gameplay is kinda pointless, till beta.

I think that all of us here want this game to succeed. The current player base (all of us lucky enough to post on these forums) should be thankful from what we get. But SE should be careful on how bland the content is they are showing to new potential customers. I can see the OP's point. I am very happy SE is sharing these videos with us, I just don't want some non-FFXIVer to look at these releases are a plain old MMO.

On another note, so many of my friends that don't play this game think its just a sequel to FFXIV 1.0. As in all they did was add content like an expansion. They don't even realize that SE built it from scratch... This speaks volumes if a lot of gamers think that way. I just hope that the correct type of advertising can help hype this game up. I always have to explain it to people that SE completely redid this title. Having to explain it really tells me SE has failed thus far on the PR front.

With global alpha test starting soon, we'll get that chance :)

I hope so. I know I wont be able to release any information/videos I get from alpha or beta (if I even make it in) But once public information gets released, I plan to help inform my youtube subscribers (I have about 1500) and friends of this game, and I'll need more than just what they've given us to go off of.

I was under the impression that very little content is in alpha. With the main purpose being stress testing the servers, I imagine there's little need for it yet. We'll see come beta, of course. I'll have to make sure I don't say "well, it's only beta" then, however :P

From the interviews I read, Yoshida-san was saying the total playtime of alpha is around 20-30hours. So yes, it's only there to stress test and is really barebone when it comes to content. The do plan to continue showing videos though and I'm sure gameplay will be shown in those, too, for example one interview suggested they plan to show a sample FATE event in a video.

Alpha is not to play.
Most content, like mainstory, is not in the alpha version.

Why shouldn't content be in the alpha/beta version. Doesn't it need to be tested too? I like that Grid got updated and all, but it doesn't really impress me. I'm not looking for a game with just pretty graphics but nothing decent to do. That's why 1.0 flunked in the first place: lack of content.

They need to make sure the big features are stable before working on the smaller features. And they will likely introduce the new content in the beta test. As far as alpha is concerned I doubt there will be anything new other than the new environment, system and general life as a player.

Alpha is to test the base systems and their scalability with player count. Not content.

After the foundation is tested and deemed to be stable to build upon, content can be added on top of it.
This is what is going to happen in beta. You seem to be expecting things from alpha it's not meant to deliver. They have their own internal testing teams to squish bugs, what we get to test is again, scalability and maybe stumble upon a few stray bugs.

Yeah I agree :( I am getting tired of having to explain to all my friends what ARR is and how it is completely remade etc etc...SE needs to market it bit better and do that themselves. It gets to the point where I just start ignoring people who assume stuff about FFXIV and just let them keep thinking that way lol.

It's not the alpha footage that's upsetting me (as I've said twice, I'm actually happy for the alpha footage we've received)...it's the lack of informed trailers/videos that they're releasing to the public. But I guess we'll just find out in due time. I just pray they dont wait until 1 month before release.

I mean...there's more public information on the new Laura Croft title that wont see release until March, than this game that was already released...remade or not.

Well good thing the game isn't releasing in a month? I mean they'll get to it, we're only on our 3rd actual preview video. Character creation -> City -> Outside zone. Next step would be to start showing off the gameplay and whatnot, at least in my opinion. We'll know all we need to well before release.
