same here :)
Pity. :/ The story was quite good.
I haven't read all this myself, but perhaps it's something like this you're looking for?

Oh! I found some interesting tidbits in that collection I just linked. Like this one:
"-Want to hear a bugle/horn? A taru by the name of Bubudoga in Owl's Nest plays one every 30 seconds or so. Go have a listen"
DARN! I am always late at discovering things. :(
Shamels self-promotion http://unendingjournal.blogspot.it/
All the seventh umbral era from my character point of view :P in this downtime, i'll post the main scenario too, with some general lore
I'm glad someone made this post, since it was something I wanted to look into myself. I'm especially curious about the racial lore since there was alot of it in FFXI, and the races seem to get along better in this one, so I'll be curious to know why that is. I found a little bit on the ffxivcore website, but it was still fairly limited.
Nice! Thanks for sharing. Bonus: getting to practice my Italian. :)
Why play a FF game if you are just going to skip all the story? If you are to lazy to pay attention to what is going on I don't see why others should fill you in.
FF games are most always, story heavy based games. Doesn't make sense that you would skip the dialog and cs. Well I know there are some youtube videos out there that make tribute to FFXIV. Most of them tell the whole story of whats going on. without the dialog.
I'll actually be launching a lore-bank soon that encompasses all of 1.X - I'm just waiting to get a few crucial answers before I really start giving it a go.
In the meantime, do you have any specific questions?
Amen to this. I was thinking the same thing as I read the original post.
I did a write-up of the story for those that actually didn't play 1.0 but saw the video and were curious. But for those that DID play, and yet just skipped everything and never read it? Sorry, I've got no pity for you.
Oh, and you probably want to check out this: a very nice compilation of cutscenes in chronological order.

Here's the cliff's notes:
Empire starts invading Eorzea.
Beastmen summon Primals to help them fight off you/the empire, you helpfully defeat them much to the Empire's delight.
City states revive Grand Companies to stop the Empire.
Empire summons Dalamud to fall.
You do a bunch of stuff but you're way too late.
Dalamud falls and is no moon: Bahamut breaks free and messes up everyone's deal.
You're teleported to the future.
^--- This is the now.
This is the future ---v
A Realm Reborn begins.
Do we know how all the races came to be united? Were there wars/conflicts between the races? Any idea where the Duskwights' main city/encampment were?
All and all, I feel like there wasn't that much lore put out about the races; but I spent so much time trying to catch up with levelling and getting as much of the GC quests done as possible that I missed alot of the regular quests and the basic lore that goes with it.
I've never heard anything about a race war, all the races seem to be pretty accepting of one another.
As for the Duskwights, they're cave dwellers who split off from the other Elezen when Gridania was founded, they're pretty reclusive and they "despise the shackles of urban life," so I can't imagine them gathering in an encampment, let alone a city.
Just the fact that you played since Launch time. You don't know anything about the story..meaning you had no idea what you were watching with the latest END trailer...
I just. I can't understand. I'm not trying to be mean. But...you have 161 posts in the forums..which means you've been to the lodestone....which means you HAD to have known the game was coming to an end....why didn't you go back and watch them in the inn room? or something. Even skipping cutscenes...by being here for so long you should have known SOMETHING...
Most people talk about skipping CS but they tend to forget that some people, like myself, were stuck with that crashing bug that the game had since day 1... sometimes I have to skip the CS to avoid a crash.. the ones I didnt skip would crash mid-CS.. so unfortunately due to the design flaws that couldnt be fixed on the user end.. I was one of those unfortunate people who didnt have the option of always watching the CS
I've been in the situation myself where I'd have liked to watch a cutscene but the other seven people I'm with have already seen this battle/place 12482365482 times and have run off without me while I try to soak up the atmosphere.
Also, people coming back for Legacy status had the problem of being short on time, short on friends and with a ton of catching up to do before Dalamud fell - probably better to read up on everything after than go sightseeing and miss out on fancy weapons/GC seals/quests/materia/levelling, etc.

This is also a nice synopsis of basically why it went the direction that it did.
You can also read quest guides for the main scenario quest et al., on FFXIV-related sites like zam.

Obiously that would be a tedious option, and I know there's a better site that gives the actual journal entries as well, but can't remember it.
All what I know is that the Elezeen are the native inhabitants of Eorzea and all the other races are immigrants. The Miqo'te came during the era of ice to Eorzea. They crossed the frozen ocean until they were in Eorzea. But this was many thousand years ago.
OK, looks like I didn't miss much as far as that goes. lol
I had read the main website and saw most of the information posted here, so I guess they haven't really elaborated in game yet.
It's not so much a uniting of the races at the City States. Eorzea is based on ancient Greece, where-as the Garlean Empire (though structured as ancient Roman) is a proxy of the Persian Empire. Until the Garleans came at us, we bickered amongst ourselves as city-states, going to war-like states with one another occasionally, which only affected the races as deeply as what races were where at the time. For instance, Ul'dah was once Lalafell capital of the world... not so much anymore. This doesn't have much to do with the races, but when they showed up to those cities.
FFXI SPOILERS (kinda)!
This whole thing has got me thinking, though. Given the amount of similarities between the races of Eorzea and Vana'diel; how annoyed would you be if they used the Zilart design for the Allags (if we ever see them). LOL!
I just finished the first episode of my weekly column that will tell the Final Fantasy XIV storyline in quite some depth, and also show all the cutscenes. You can find it here :D

Makes me sad people ignore so much of the story or lore in this game.
Almost as bad as the people that don't know how to put 2 and 2 together during a Seasonal Event to figure out things on their own.
Pfft only nerds read.
If you want to dispute that add me on XBL, my gamertag is: XxXxXSm0kEw33D[420]SnIpEkIlLa{{MLG}}XxXxX
I'd wreck you noobs in CoD
You played 1.0 for the gameplay? Wow.
