What is going to happen to these in ARR? What did Atomos really DO to the aethecytes? Is he part of the reason the Eorzia 5 years in the furutre still has life on it, or did more than just the 5 heroes get teleported somehow?
Whats up with it?!

I'm betting there will be newer aetherytes in ARR while the old ones remain, but in complete ruin (like the red one from the 2.0 pdfs)
I think atmo sucked up the life of the earth, reason why the prayer failed
Atomos liked the aetherytes, and in 2.0 they'll have rings on them.
I wonder if the new, larger Aetheryte are those slow-moving fiery meteors that were shooting out of Dalamud (after cooling down a bit).
Atomos' purpose has me vexed. A minion of Bahamut? Or contrariwise draining the aether out of the current space/time to prevent the utter destruction of Eorzea?
I believe Atomos was one of the monsters from the void. The rift to the void opened up when the Aetherytes began to react to the amount of Aether within Dalamud or the effect Dalamud had on the planets aether.
I'm speculating that Atomos was an instrument of Bahamut, meant to suck up the Aether from Eorzea to make him more powerful, hence how he broke free of the sealing spell.
An interesting point, I had not thought of this...Personally I was going with the FF7 version of things that this was a sort of planetary defense system. Why would he attack players? Well, Atomos is probably sentient but rather indifferent to who or what is good/evil. We're all part of the Aether, points of light in a sea of floating Aether, for all this creature knows we're nothing but energy, good or evil, it has no idea who is screwing up the flow of Aether and doesn't care, it needs to be fixed and that is the creatures purpose.
I was also curious if it was connected to the Red Moon as well, whether it was just the beginning of monsters just running amok, and it getting worse once the moon landed...but I'm still very interested in this. I was really worried once I heard about the 0 anima costs to teleport and the red crystals...I'm sitll interested, lore-wise, what happened there....
I just think Atomos is just a Primal, and like a primal he wants more aether for us.. like Garuda and Ifrit.. but he live in Deepvoid so for now can't be defeated cuz his real form still in deepvoid, so we fight against a projection (like all deepvoid monster)
You can notice when we fight Atomos he "taste" our Aether... cuz we know, atomos have a massive maws.. and he's hungry!
I think so, not related to Bahamut... well, not directly... probably atomos popped cuz he feel Bahamut's Aether... Big Aether... for a Big Hungry Primal :)
And of course atomos not finding this aether.. he absorbed all aether aroud... so absorbed all power from Aetheryte... destroying all their power...
Atomos most certainly drained a part of the aether from the land, but I doubt he gave it to Bahamut. But that might be a reason why the sealing spell failed.
Thancred (I think ?) said summoning the Twleves would put a big strain on the land, if it was already weakened by Atomos... The whole plan failed :P
We chain them up ofcoarse
Atmos was a bridge between out nice Ather suffed world and the void.
By draining the ather from the atherites he weakened the fabric enough to summon his minions, that's why after a while we got much stronger attacks.
After sucking up a load of ather, and having the ather from the world devastated by the primals too the prayer failed because to summon the 12 we need LOADS of ather. This is why it failed children, not because Bahamut > 12 gods, because we tried to summon 12 gods power and didn;t have the energy to do so.
Im kind of shocked that with the fact that alot of poeple think that odin might pop up to stop Bahamut, but no one thinks that atmos may be sucking up the aether to give to odin.I know if i was gonna try to stop him i would want as much aether as i could get.
I actually think atomos was fueling the aetherytes. for instance, we have regular crystals, desaspected (drained of energy) and overaspected (overflowing with energy). then we have the same pattern for atherytes. we have the normal ones that cost anima to port to. then we had over-aspected atherytes which had so much energy, they had no anima cost, and i assume a de-aspected crystal would be disabled. atomos hovered over the aetherytes until they were overaspected, then he attacked. they said the primals drained immense amounts of aether from the planet, i think atomos was trying to balance it out
This. Atomos has been siphoning the Aether from the land for whatever reason, and I wonder if it will be explained in the story at launch or if it's something for down the road. I don't know if it's directly related to the prayer failing, but it's definitely possible.
