The "Force field" spell effect reiteration.

The following are two pictures taken at the same frame, same event, but different trailers.

Here we see a "shield-like" spell from the "A New Adventure" trailer

Both trailers still depict a projectile being deflected from the "shield/fog". Regardless, it's not an ability that is present in version 1.0.

I was really hoping for a shield like spell that was depicted in the opening movie for the game and then when I saw the same spell being used again in ARR trailer footage I was really excited but this makes it really vague as to what the fate of this potential combat mechanic could be.

It's clear that whatever ability is depicted is meant to be a defensive one but it's unclear as to what that ability really does. It seems like it's really just an in-between version of Protect. It doesn't create a visible force field as seen in the "A New Adventure" trailer. The in-game version of protect will show a force field momentarily whenever you are attacked but is otherwise invisible while the "The End of an Era" trailer just creates a permanent haze around the character.

... I wish we could get a force-field like spell though.

I don't see any pictures. I feel like I haven't been seeing a lot of pictures people are supposed to have been posting in the forum, is anyone else having this problem?

To be honest, I always figured these spells were just an overly-visual Protect spell

Well, we can see that the spell was cast by the Bard, actually.
Who has access to base Conjurer spells.

Which leads me to agree with Fadigre, that's just Protect. Or maybe Stoneskin since it's completely blocking the shots, but still bet on Protect.

Still can't seem to fix the images in the OP so either there is a problem with SE's servers or I just don't know how to internet. Either way it just seems to be a CG reiteration of protect and not a new spell altogether. I know a lot of people had complained about not being able to do what is seen in the first version's opening movie (force field, fire-arrow) and then when the first ARR trailer was released people got there hopes up again because the force field like spell was depicted again.

I personally don't see the harm in depicting protect the same way it is in the game. It still looks cool and it wouldn't get people's hopes up in anticipation of a new combat mechanic. The "The End of an Era" video depicts it the best so far.

There was definitely a picture I remember from some of the earliest 2.0 gameplay footage that was released where there was something on screen that resembled the spell louisox used to protect the party in the new trailer.

I am too lazy to look for it but it was like a honeycomb barrier looking thing.

Actually its in the limit break trailer. No idea what it is but its casted by the white mage at 1:25ish

I'm pretty sure it is protect also. Even in game, if you have protect on, you'll see a little flash of a shield appear when you're hit, showing it deflecting some of the damage. So I'm quite sure this is merely 'protect', and perhaps they made it a fog instead of a dome in the End of an Era trailer in order for it not to be confused with Louisoix's shield spell.

It's Protect. However, Lou casted Protect II. That's why it was removed, it's overpowered.

Yea, it does look similar to this and I thought the same, but after watching the video again, I think that's holy or some new WHM attack spell. Cuz as it flashes, you can see the enemy getting hit on the left and the graphic is different from when the DRG hits him.

Yeah, these are the pre-rendered CGI equivalents to in-game spells. Also, the hourglass is a good catch. That's one of the Twelve symbols. I remember seeing it in the ring around Bahamut.

Also, in case you guys didn't catch it, each of the "Spears" of the Twelve that appear have their symbols at the top of them. I even caught a glimpse of "The Destroyer"'s symbol.

On that subject of the magic "Shield" changing from earlier footage, it was probably done so since it looked similar to what Louisoix did. So they made it look different in comparison as to avoid any confusion. That's what I think.

It would be cool if it was a new spell for tactical gameplay. I.E. when your fighting mobs with a big aoe attack/cast WHM had to catch it and call the rest of the party to come within it otherwise get hit by it. Call me crazy

And its not protect, in a live-letter you can see, that protect has the same animation like now.


well it's not a limit-break isnt it? but... i looked closely to it .. it seems to do light damage to the enemy?? you can see after he casts it, the enemies glow for a short moment? or is it just me?

maybe its just a new animation for Sanctus? well i dont know that scene is too short and the players hit too often.

We know it's a new animations but you're right. It's kind of hard to tell whether or not it's actually a new spell. I'll have to watch it again but I think they may have made different animations for offensive and defensive spells. If the WHM is raising their wand in the same manner as the black mage is in the trailer that would be a little more evidence supporting the idea that the spell is an attack spell.
