"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

Black screen then "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" which will cause ffxiv to crash because of the loss of display driver.(like alt-tabbing out of fullscreen does or turning off my hdtv does)

It happens alot during ffxiv play time. I expect to get it 10+ times a day. I have tried clean install, reinstall graphic drivers, underclock nothing works.

I notice that i will very often get it during browsing my retainer . Though it does happen during other times. I dont think i have had during battle thank god.

Is it cos of ffxiv? is my new gtx 680 the problem? I didnt get it when i played gw2 . FFXIV is going to explode soon so it less of concern for me but i wanted to know is this a common problem with ffxiv?

I do dual box using sandboxie .Though it has happened very often when i havent dual boxed.

It is a new pc so im a bit disappointed by this.

This is unrelated to FFXIV, it's your graphics driver you need to either update/downgrade or check if your GPU is still actually running well. Even if you dualbox you shouldn't be crashing your driver like this.

Which one you recommend? cos i tried a few do you know which one works well with gtx 680? I have looked on the internet for answers didnt get them. Its a problem that started with ffxiv so i ask the ffxiv forum if they have found the solution.

I will almost always get it during browsing my retainer. Very suspicious!

go to the nvidea website and get the latest one. If you've done that, have you updated Java recently?

I had to replace a video card that used to give me a similar error when playing XIV/BF3.

It would crash once and recover, and the second time it would lock up.

Edit: As long as your card can recover it's likely a driver/software issue.

haha that's because half the game time is spent waiting for items to transfer back and forth in your menus!

This was happening to my buddy on a laptop he had a 540m. He had to try a few different driver versions before it would stop. Also Try playing around with full screen vs windowed mode. He at one point was using Steam to full screen the game and still browse the web.

I have this same problem, and it appears to be a driver issue SPECIFICALLY with FFXIV. The card works fine on other, higher stress games, is not getting anywhere near dangerous heat, and the problem is perfectly reproducible. All I have to do is hang out on that one special uldah server, and about once an hour the driver will crash. Then it will either recover and everything's cool, or it will restart the comp and everything's cool once its back up. This is the most recent driver btw, and has been an issue with the last few as well. I would downgrade to try and find something more stable... but we have a week til the engine goes away anyway, so not worth the effort.

Might be something to the full screen/windowed thing too.

Most likely your video card is overheating. You need to stop playing the game before you damage it, and adjust your graphics settings in control panel- Turn up the fan speed to maximum.

FFXIV 1.0 is not your average high stress game. It takes WAY more resources than it should for the graphics it puts out. Have you actually checked your graphics card temperature while playing? "stop responding and has recovered" should almost never happen unless your card is overheating.

I had this same problem with my 560Ti, I had to rollback my drivers to an older one to finally get it stable. Newest driver is not always best

me i had that problem too i did research ..and some Hitech was saying the card stronger so not get use and Window7 got a idle for every drivers that dont get use alot ..so they said to go in regedit and change the time laps before get idle ..cos i was checking my videocard in game and my videocard was at 20% use and keep black out ,crash and recover ..then i did what they wrote and no more trouble i dont crash anymore

I had the same problem once:
If it occurs only once, dont panic. Errors happen.

If it occurs many times, your graphics card may be damaged.
In my case, the memory inside was damaged and my retailer sent me a replacement, since then it never occured again (I had a GTX 470)

It actually happen a lot with GTX680 and XIV thanks to crappy drivers. This has nothing to do with overheating. There is a thread about it on Nvidia forums.

And I can confirm this as a GTX680 owner.

Even if it is true that XIV generates a lot of heat, the 680 is way more efficient than its predecessor (I used to have a 580 before), and the fan doesn't even need to go above 50% while XIV is running (which keeps you a lot of margin before having your card to overheat, as the fan speed will be automatically increased as the temperature rise.)

It's easy to tell if overheating is the cause of an issue, just listen to the fan, at max speed, when using the default cooler of 580/680, it sounds like an airplane... Impossible not to notice. As long as the fan isn't at 100% it means that the temperature is below an acceptable threshold.

To the OP, does it happen most of the time when you are in Ul'dah? If yes don't even look further, there is no way to fix this issue. Just wait for ARR.

(I also tried tons of different drivers, it happened with all of them, no exception, however I cannot tell for sure if it would happen less often with certain drivers.)

i've had near zero display driver issues with the 304.79beta drivers, as always remember to do a custom install and check the Clean install option.

This happens alot with the nvidia 600 series cards and this game. Its not due to overheating though, its a driver issue. The card you are using is more than enough to handle this game but due to lack of support in the form of drivers some of the features will cause it to crash. Turn off ambient occlusion and have msaa to at least 4x. Crashing occurs when the card throttles down from high to low load.

Unless the noise REALLY bothers you, you should always have the fan maxed anyway. I've never had a video card whose fan died before the card did.

Well any high-end Nvidia reference card since Fermi has a loud as sh** fan. I play with headphones, usually my volume is really high, yet the fan at 100% on these card is unbearable. ~30% is barely audible (usually CPU/case fan are more loud). 40~50% you can start to hear it, but it's very small (impossible to notice with headphones). Around 60% it starts to get noisy. Anything above 80% is a jet during take off...

(I know videos aren't the best to realize how noisy it is, but can give a rough idea, and it only goes to 85% here which is the max allowed by the eVGA tool.)

I play with a headset and can't really hear the fan while playing, even at full blast speed.

I had this issue once upon a time, and it defiantly is from overheating.
Buy yourself a can of air and blow your card out once a week and you will never see the error again.

it aint the driver it the game there something telling the window to do something, then that something does not exits so it crashes.

It's not the game. If the drivers crash and it's not overheating, its a flaw in the drivers. There are unexpected problems with various games in drivers all the time- generally it's the driver engineers that address the problem not the game engineers. The engineers are just using the libraries and instruction sets available to them the way anyone would. If they use them and the drivers crash, it's the driver, not the game.
Like 98% of "display driver stopped responding and has recovered" errors are caused by overheating. The remaining 2% are actual crashes.

I used to get this ALL THE TIME! How did I fix the issue? I got a new video card. I think the problem is related to the video overheating....my old GPU was notorious for that.

I had this issue before, and I get it every time I factory default my PC. The fix for me anyways is updating my DirectX.

I only get this error crash in uldah. Updating to new drivers , clean install of windows or newest drivers does not fix neither does increased fan speed.

I applied the Microsoft Support patch recommended earlier : "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error in Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
I was getting the crash several times a day, nothing to do with overheating, normally occurs when doing nothing, running or calling chocobo.
No further crashes as yet. Also I dont get the minute or so of stuttering when I first log in.

The problem seems to have changed, the only crashes i get now have been when calling my retainer at the point where the retainers inventory is about to be displayed, which is new for me. So the microsoft patch does seem to have modified the behaviour.

I had that problem a while ago. Turns out the card was sagging and the heatsink lost contact with one of the GPU cores. This might be your problem, maybe not.

my 2 cents: My brother used to get this all the time.

He never got it on XIV, he never got it on D3, but he got it on many other games. We tried a lot:

- Reinstalling
- Several Drivers
- Full clean of PC
- Replace video card
- Replace video card again
- Replace motherboard
- Replace CPU
- Replace Ram

His PC never got hot, we had cpu temps running and checked them when it occurred and nothing out of the ordinary, it could happen even when not playing games lol.

Nothing worked, it was like he was sinned to have it through some angry computer god.

So he binned the PC, bought a new one from scratch and has never had it since.

I was told by EA staff that using 3rd party programs to dual box was against the tos, yet people are talking about it in here like it is not.. wth already, is it allowed or not allowed.. my head is about to explode

What does EA have to do with Square Enix and FFXIV?

Dualboxing is allowed. Using a bot program to autonomously control the other character is not.

I've bought myself a MSI GTX670 OC'd a couple of months ago and just recently started having this issue... it's not overheating and downgrading my drivers had no effect either.

It happened occasionaly before, but today it did many, many times in a row in Ul'dah during JP prime time (mass of people fighting the new mobs).

Any more ideas? Or is it just a random common issue with the 1.0 client I shouldn't worry about?

there is a known flaw in the dynamic clocking aspect of all the 600 Series. like i said the 304.79 Beta Drivers seem to be the most stable for all of the 600 Series save for the 660Ti and for that id recommend any of the 305.XX Beta Drivers. i think these driver break the dynamic clocking and thats why they work so well.

the reason the current client is crashing XiV is because of the dynamic clocking related to the 600 Series cards. Ive been able to reproduce this issue on a gtx270 and a gtx460 by alt tabing out of the game" Windowed Mode" and changing the Core/Clock frequency in EVGA the result is FFXIV crashes with one of two error messages.

first is a "directX error"

the second is a "Display Driver error"

I started getting this error earlier. It was completely unrelated to FFXIV though as I hadn't even played it today when it happened.
Kept doing what TC said but in my case, it progressively got worse and by this point I can't even startup my PC unless it's in safe mode which limits me to 800x600.

It got worse after I updated my drivers. I'm guessing I need a new GPU /sigh
