Perhaps this conversation with my linkshell mates got out of hand yesterday but there's something I don't quite understand about our shutdown in November.
Perhaps one of you lovely ladies can help me to piece this together!
As we already know, FFXIV's servers will stop saving on the 1st November to transfer character data to 2.0.
Yet according to our last Letter from the Producer the Alpha hasn't even began!Quote:
The reason for the shutdown is less thrilling than you might think. "Basically the player data will be taken over into the new game. So, to convert all this new data for the new systems, we need a certain amount of time to do this. There's so much data, so many thousands of characters that we must do this for. And so we have to shut down the servers," he said.
I may only be speaking for myself here but we seem to be getting the same message from XIV's team whenever a question is asked and that is "We don't know yet".
Perhaps this is just paranoia and anxiety but it feels like the game isn't going to be ready for Alpha anytime soon. Please note that the word feel is the operative word and I have nothing to back that up.
I'm not exactly the most competent when it comes to understanding servers.
Would it be possible that our character details are going to be transferred to 2.0's servers before the game has actually been made so it can all be thrown together immediately or is this just a case of 2.0 is taking longer to construct than planned and the server shutdown has been placed too far ahead of schedule ultimately meaning that when the game is ready we will be waiting another month for character transfers.
I feel like this post is coming across extremely selfish as Yoshida’s team are doing everything they can do for their adoptive child suffering a premature birth but I can’t help but feel like this doesn’t quite add up.

Um, they dont need to have all things ready for alpha..the transferred character period is for Beta phase. Sure it may delayed, but I think they will meet their schedule with Alpha phase

The worst part of this, and I speak for every single FFXIV player -- is that no matter how damn hard you want ARR in your hands we all know deep down that Yoshi and his team, and Square enix as a whole really cannot afford to release it until it's absolutely finished.
They of course want to meet deadlines and expectations, but they are willing to break deadlines if it means delivering the finished product we all really want. You can rant and rave, you can speculate and grow impatient, but just remember to take it week by week and remind yourself that every day you're not yet playing ARR is a day that the game becomes better to play. -

I've friends running around all over the place fishing for their achievements before they go and others striving to take down Garuda with their strategies before the engine change through fear of having to start at step 1 all over again.

Just chill. It's only a game. Once everything is setup for the Beta, you will see why it took a little more time to complete. It's for the best.

Ive said all along the beta wont be till Jan and you can expect 2.0 sometime in March at the earliest but every day i see another post where people expect 2.0 to be ready by December....

Alpha has already begun for JP players, apparently. It won't be ready for the rest of us, however, until the second phase of Alpha; that's when the rest of us get our access and trials and tribulations actually begin.
And seeing that Alpha is PURELY a stress test with absolutely minimal content, I only see that lasting for a week or two. Once they've finished all of the post-alpha preparation, we should be able to see Beta by Winter 2012. From there, the game probably won't actually be released until, say, March of 2013. But we'll all probably be playing beta until launch anyways.. so it doesn't bother me.
Also, no matter how much you like it, ARR isn't going to launch with every piece of content intact; I'm sure they still have deadlines and things to meet, just as any business does, and they need the game out the door by a certain point. All we can hope is that the game is fairly complete, it actually has things for it's players to do, and it isn't in shambles by that time.
MMOs -never- release with all the content they promise. Hell, most games have some content or features cut until later so they can make their deadlines. -

Trust me, you'd have already seen an actual flood of information, videos and screenshots from JP players if it had started, heck you can find certain sites with JP who chronicles login data and projected vs actual timeframes by SE. There would be lots of Alpha stuff floating around it did start for them, even if it's a "stress test."Quote:
