Arc/Brd gear thread

Hello. looking to see if there are any easy ways to improve my gear.

Weapon: Storm LT bow (bonus active)
head: choral
body: raptorskin harness (6dex, 32pie)
belt: storm sergeant
gloves: Felt Bracers (pie3, acc5, AP50) or Lominsan officer's gloves (acc+50)
legs: choral
feet: storm sergeant jackboots (dex+10)
ear: storm sergeant (AP+4, CritAP+7)
neck: Electrum gorget (30AP)
wrist: storm sergeant (AP+3, STR+7)
rings: tourmaline+1x2 (36pie)

Final stats without food:

What food would you recomend i eat for garuda? should i try to push my dex higher?

when i get a Garuda spine, is it worth it to maintain the bonus on the earring or should i get a pie/dex belt?

In situations where I find I am missing a lot, and i switch to my lominsan gloves for the acc, should i keep jackboots on our switch to choral sandals for the extra pie?

Basically, the only upgrades you can really make are Garuda's Spine, Paragon's Crown, and melded Felt Trousers; so you're in pretty good shape. You're honestly only losing 3 STR and 2 ATK for switching from your current belt to a DEX one, and making the appropriate earring/bracelet swaps (Explorer's Earrings, Spinel Bracelet +1) should bring your DEX up to 287.

You should be at around ~450 or so ACC for Garuda, I usually run a little high. With your current setup I would swap out your Bracers with the Officer's Gloves and eat Aldgoat Steak or Smoked Raptor if you're able to afford it (you can eat Beef Jerky but your ATK is too low to really take full advantage of it so it's not really worth it). That should put you at about 448 ACC and 575 AP.

Don't spend too much gil on the trousers, try to shoot for an easy double, as Swordsman's Cry tends to be pricey, and you're gaining little for spending more on the upper tier IV's. I would hope Explorer's Earrings are fairly cheap since they're a common AV/CC drop, and the HQ Spinel/Electrum(situationally) shouldn't be too hard either, if you have a GLD friend.

I'm actually losing 30AP. i need the belt for the set bonus on my bow. that's the only purpose it serves. belt is a bit of a throw-away spot.

how much dex+STR would i need to overcome the loss of 7pie from choral pants?

because i can get such high acc without explorers ear, is it worth losing the 30AP from bow set bonus to get an explorers? also explorers is not tha tmuch better than the storm ear. and if i'm still missing with officers gloves and acc food i think i have a different set of problems.

I can probably get a 10dex,10str pair of pants to replace my pants. but i'm only gaining 3 dex. and like 4 attack from the str and losing 7pie. is this worth it?

Losing PIE to DEX is never worth it. The only comparison you can make is whether the attack is better than PIE. I personally don't think 4AP>7PIE

Technically, you don't need to. Your PIE isn't capped, therefor you need more and 7PIE should easily beat 4AP. As far as any other testing: http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/107...=1#post5409381

Just did a couple of Garuda runs. I was doing between 15-20k damage. First time doing Garuda, so not very consistent yet. usually around 3k damage below the lowest blm.

overall I'd say my set is solid. Unfortunately (although it's a good problem to have) I just got my spine on our last kill, so i'll need to relook at my gear. As many of my pieces were optimized for LT bow.

I'm thinking i'll need to get rid of my jackboots and get some solid DEX pants with STR to push my damage higher. but overall I think i'm done building brd until ARR.

I'll post my results comparing LT vs. Garuda with the same gear set to see if there is any difference after we do Garuda again.

As a side note: I've found that 398 acc with min up was fine. I had a 98% hit rate over 12 or so attempts.

so the big question will be if the .7DPS will be enough to overcome the 26 base damage on LT bow and 30AP.

I parse higher with Garuda's spine, but your damage for the fight is on the low end so it may be easier to manage plumes with a higher base damage weapon. Garuda's is nice, but I had a lot of trouble with it at first because it takes more shots to kill plumes.

Why so eager to meld str/dex onto your pants? You can meld Piety onto some Felt Kecks or Raptorskin Subligar. Probably cheaper as well.

I'm already at Pie cap. My build was centered around the LT bow, and activating the bonus. 30AP is huge.

now that I can change my accesseries a bit, i can get a pie bracelet. Dex pants are the only thing i'm really missing to hit dex cap for WS, as i'm already very close to the cap for auto attacks/light shot.

we're managing relic-runs with our group. while I'd love to push my damage higher to improve our tolerance for error, i'm not positive its needed. our other bard was doing in the 8-13k range. I was usually 1.5x their damage. i'm still learning optimal positioning and rotations for the fight. for the most part right now i'm just spamming light shot and only using maybe 4 combos every fight. I bring out a blood letter combo before the first jump. and then use RoD combo right after to get some damage out of quick knock. it's usually off CD a little after AB happens so i can use it again while i'm dodging tornados.

i think the only thing i need to do in the fight now is to try to use wide-volley combo to get a little more damage on Garuda. but I was typically one shotting plumes with RoD uncombod, and Wide volley does less damage so i'm a little concerned. if i've only got 2 or 3 plumes I might be able to pull it off and pick them off after WV. but i'll need to play around with my combos. and again i'm not convinced it's needed. i'd rather just one-shot them with RoD.

base damage i know affects light shot, but does it also affect RoD/Wide Volley?

my understanding was higher base damage was good for light shot, barrage, heavy shot. but for WS (quick knock, RoD, wide volley, etc.) DPS score was more important. is this true?

I just noticed this.

most of the other testing i've seen suggests pie cap is actually around 335. not 350. have you tried lowering your PIE to see if there is any significant decrease in damage? I'm curious to see how other research stacks up.

my understanding is BRD stat caps are lower...for some strange reason.

This is because Ifrit's Bow DPS is something like 36.74 compared to Ifrit's Harpoon which is 39.73 (Both guesses but should be close).

3DPS difference=different stat caps for the original testing.

My Garuda rotation is a few posts later in that thread as well. Depending on how the plumes come out, and if we get South Winds or not, I am in the 19-29k range each fight. Most fights it's ~25k.

I can easily put in more PIE now that i have my spine. my bracelet and belt slot just opened up. and i can put my choral sandals back on for another 10 PIE. so i can probably squeeze at least another 17 pie, but at the cost of 10 dex, 3AP and 7str. I'm two jobs away from paragon's crown. so if i get time i'll probably work on that to bring me up to 351 PIE. but my dex will be low at 260. I'll be taking away 10dex for 10pie on boots.

I think my only other option would be a triple meld on body.

I stand corrected. However if i'm going to meld pants, it will be STR/DEX. between accessories and forward thinking (I will eventually get paragon's crown) my BiS for legs will be STR/DEX. Piety will be largely wasted here. However, my recommendation to other bards that do not have a similar gear set to me is that piety should be your first focus. this is based on my own experience and eyeballing damage.

I did further testing last night on Garuda.

With Spine (smoked raptor and min):
AP:593
Acc:446
Pie:344
Dex:263

Over 7 Garuda runs I averaged about 17k damage. From what church has implied my damage is on the low end. I'm chalking this up to inexperience and being drastically below the dex cap.

95% acc average on these 7 fights with the spine.


I did another 3 runs with my old set. combined with my data from last night

630AP
441acc
273dex
328pie

I was averaging 16k damage. with 98% accuracy. I find this last bit particularly interesting. i'm guessing there is some sort of dex check to determine accuracy threshold.

A couple of notes:

Using spine i was able to get more combos off. a larger percentage of my damage came from WS damage. This was not a significantly larger percentage, however. especially during the final phase of the fight. i was getting 3 or 4 combos off instead of only 1 or 2.

Rain of death more consistently destroyed plumes with spine. i don't have any data to say exactly how much more damage I was doing per RoD. but I had almost no stragglers. Eyeballing I would say it was around 5% increase in damage per WS.

Furthermore, total damage from lightshot was about the same between spine and storm LT bow. the margin between these two is small enough that i feel they are equivalent. However I'm aware that i'm not quite at dex cap for lightshot with spine. this could make all the difference. However at this time i'm not sure I want to invest into more dex, as I would need a very solid pair of dex pants. I'll also need to make up 7 PTY somewhere. (most likely by getting a paragon's crown, or triple melded body)

If you're a new bard and you're gearing for endgame your LT bow will be a solid choice.

If you're on a budget and you're maelstrom, I would highly recommend investing ~4-5m into a solid pair of att gloves and a pie body. and getting the set bonus. this will make a world of difference. 30AP is fantastic.

On a fight where you can combo freely, the spine will largely outperform the LT bow. the increase in DPS=>WS damage is great.

In fights where the vast majority of your damage is from light shot (Moogle, Garuda) the LT bow will be nearly equivalent to spine due to the higher base damage.

Your damage for Garuda does seem quite low. How fast are you killing her (do you kill the clones at all and if you do, how many times)?

I remember parsing 30k on our last run yesterday, tried to find some parses to see is this a usual number but couldn't find any for now (will check on our next run which should be on Monday, I think). Then again, we tend to go a bit slow on this fight, killing the clones even 3 times sometimes, and that affects total dmg a lot.

I'm using Flame Lieutenant's Bow. My stats are PIE 344, DEX 298, ATT 532, ACC 390. With this ACC I always get close to 100% ACC (never lower than 95%) eating Jerked Beef, so I would say you really don't need any more than 400 ACC for this on BRD.

We're doing ~6min burn runs. we're essentially doing relic runs.

the damage i'm posting is garuda ONLY. not total damage throughout the fight. if i post total damage it's probably much higher.

we do not kill sisters. we just beat her face in.

As BRD my main role is to protect one pillar and kill plumes with RoD. i can combo before first jump. and get one combo off after first jump. after that i just build 3k TP and blow RoD every 30 seconds or so. usually do this 3 or 4 times before she does AB.

After AB I can combo freely.

You should post the total damage, no one cares what a BRD does solely to Garuda. Your job is to make sure the party is alive when she does Aerial blast.

e-though considering you're doing the method you're doing, it's probably not as reliable a source of information as most people would base your total output on a more standard party setup.

Yeah if you're doing the BLM burn thing and don't even kill the clones the damage sounds just fine. Before AB I usually do only one RoD combo if even that - I just gather 3000 tp (using throwing weapons too) and do RoD.

Why is this? damage done to plumes really requires one thing: you one shot the plumes with RoD. after that it doesn't matter. you probably don't even have to one-shot them. it just makes it far easier and gives you a lot more room for error.

because we're only protecting two pillars, the total damage i do varies widely. sometimes i kill 15+ plumes. other times i'll only kill 5 or 6. at around 630-640 per plume, that's a difference of 6k damage rounding down.

I could kill plumes on the other pillars. but what's the point? you only need 6 stones to survive. i might as well put damage where it matters: on Garuda.

I think it is a HUGE misconception that BRD should not do a lot of damage to Garuda. If me and the other brd are averaging 20-25k damage on Garuda, that's damage the blms don't have to do. relieving the burden on the BLMs in anyway is overall beneficial.

My opinion right now is if you're only concerned about killing plumes you can go in with only AF and a Crab bow and do just fine. a ~40DPS bow is ideal, but not required if you're only concerned with killing plumes. and in that case there's not a whole lot of point in talking about gear because just about anything you can gather together will be adequate.

Because the BLM burn strategy is a really poor method of killing Garuda and is no where near as 100% as killing a set of sisters and moving on. We can get Garuda to the same HP level as 4xBLM with only 3xBLM and we still kill sisters because it's more consistent and has less of Murphy's Law.

And, you don't do 20-25k on Garuda. Archer doesn't have the combo's available to push damage like a real DD would - even a DRG who does half plumes/half Garuda would have a hard time breaking 25k without a Gae Bolg. (22k Garuda, 4.5k Superna, 9-15k Plumes is pretty normal)

Crab Bow and AF doesn't one shot plumes, so you're just throwing what you feel out there and not basing it on reality.

I don't agree with this. If you got a good group who is well-versed in the burn you can pretty much spam the fight without dying. If you have two bards who are on the same page and communicating you can pretty much deal with any of the plumage quite easily. If you have decent black mages and a tank who can pull the add's and hallowed ground everything on top of this you can pretty much spam the fight non-stop with no deaths.

At first, I questioned the validity of this method and preferred normal, sister killing methods as well, but after mastering it, I can absolutely say it is much more efficient and easier than a killing the sister's run. All our runs are clean as well. Hell, we're bringing in people who aren't very good players putting them on white mage and getting them their first win. As a bonus we do this so fast that all our food carries over for a full second run.

So basically for this method I use the Storm Lieutenant's bow with bonus active, double attack iv gauntlets and some other things. After food I'm at about 650 attack. I've done this with garuda's spine but since Garuda dies so fast the higher attack speed on Garuda's doesn't kick in and you actually LOSE damage due to the weak light shots.

On this method if a bard and his partner are good at taking care of plumes they can add to the DPS on Garuda itself making the fight go even faster. The only issue with this method is you need to have two bards who can listen and communicate well with each other. We're killing Garuda in less than 5:45 seconds like this.

Fair enough. we're doing blm burn. considering we're getting some success; strategy doesn't matter as much as results. we're seeing people use the more accepted strategy and getting about the same success rate. we can argue semantics but i honestly don't think it matters how you kill her as long as it gets done.

We're not really here to discuss garuda strategies. we're here to discuss gear. the whole point of gear is for DPS.

How you choose to calculate that is up to you. Because not all fights are like Garuda, and i'm ultimately gearing up for To Kill a Raven (Hard) i'm more concerned with single target, non-trash damage. IE: what i'm doing to Garuda.

i said me AND the other bard. that's combined damage.

If you read my other post i said i'm averaging around 17k damage on Garuda. If you add in ~15 plumes at ~640 damage each that's another ~9k damage. so total damage is in the 25k neighborhood.

breaking 20k on BRD should not be hard. I'm not dumping TP as efficiently as i could be for fear of missing an RoD. but honestly worst case scenario if i dumped 1k TP with a heavy shot as plumes spawned i could build it up fast enough to RoD before they do enough damage to the pillar to matter. I could probably push out another 3k damage if i dumped TP in a more risky fashion.

We're getting to the final phase consistently. so w/e we're doing while plumes are spawning is working. no need to change any of that. I could artificially bump my numbers higher by killing plumes i don't need to. but what's the point? i don't need to stroke my e-peen that much. I'd rather put DPS where it matters.

if brd is only killing plumes gear does not matter. period. end of story. killing the plumes is not hard. if you can build 3ktp in 30 seconds and then pick off a number of plumes with either light shot or wide volley you'll be fine.

I've had some other bards come in with AF only and NQ accessories and SGT bows. they do roughly half my DPS. they are killing plumes fine. Most of the time they are killing more plumes than I am. but i'm also not killing plumes that aren't on my pillar, unless the other brd is in dire need of backup.

but we still lose these more than we win with the sub-par bards. So i'm gonna stand by that the damage brd outputs on Garuda does in fact matter. even more so when she has ~1% HP when we wipe and the other BRD is doing 7k damage to Garuda compared to my 15k

Got a couple of trials against Raven (hard)

my group is still streamlining it's strategy, and it looks like i'll be switching to whm in the interim while we work our some of our difficulties with the fight itself. the hard part of brd for this fight is positioning. and that can be learned on whm. skill rotation is very easy, as you're always ~13 yalms away you can pretty much combo freely with TP being your limiting factor.

However I've been ranging between 12k-22k damage in about 14 minutes. focusing purely on Nael and occasionally helping with meteors. (have not made it to 10meteor phase). this is roughly 70% of the damage our DRG. roughly 75-80% of the mnk. As a side note, I feel our MNK is not hitting his proper rotation so that may not be a good approximation of where BRDs damage should be on this fight.

He doesn't seem to have inherently higher defense or stats than the regular version, only higher HP/Regen and has Absorb Defense move.

I'm just gearing up my bard and can't seem to find the stat cap based on the Flame bow.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I gathered, stat caps are based on a weapon's dps.

So if the stat cap for Garuda's Spine (22.90 DPS) is around 350/310 piety/dex, would it be safe to say that the cap on the Flame bow (26.59 DPS) should be somewhere north of 350/310?

so for every full point of DPS you need roughly 10 more of your main stat.

I agree. our group was still on the learning curve, so we were sacrificing damage for learning positioning.

After 8 event days of work we've managed 2 wins. Our first win was extremely messy, and we had about 5 seconds left on the clock.

Epyk Phael is our bard in this fight. his gear setup is nearly identical to mine. he's missing HQ rings, and below my AP by a few points but for the most part our gear is the same.

He reported damage of 43k during the fight using Spine. I'm unsure if this is Darnus only or total damage. When I find out i'll update.

Second win was much cleaner. I appologize for the long vid on this second one. we haven't edited it yet. our win begins roughly at 1:20:40 and ends at roughly 1:48:50. You can see us goofing off and burning Garuda a couple of times after the darnus win.

I hadn't participated in this fight for about 4 event days, I made a lot of silly mistakes in the first couple of attempts. soloing wrong meteor, poor song rotation. not popping STR pot. etc.

I decided to try a safer route for meteor damage and brought my Storm LT bow for the higher base damage of lightshot to help take out meteors. also to provide a comparison between the Spine and the LT bow.

My damage to Darnus alone was a little over 42k. BRDs in this fight should absolutely be breaking 40k damage on darnus. I didn't have my parser up so I'm not positive what my total damage, accuracy, etc was. but I would expect an additional 2-5k on meteors. I know a missed a couple of blood letters, but I would guess my accuracy was around 96%

We'll be attempting another win to get our final member his ravens. If I'm the acting BRD i'll be using spine to compare the damage between the two bows.
