we already know that Chocobos in FFXIV will have bigger role than they ever had in any FF game , we can raise them and used them for races which we already can do in FFXI but here will take extra step to use them in battles and customize their role from tank , DD to healer.
also legacy members will get their own chocobo with special design which tell us that development team unlike FF11 team will add different looking chocobos with time.
now think of the possibilities of the different looking chocobos
will we have different colors each with different ability?
like blue chocobo that can walk on water to reach certain dungeon
green for mountains?
will flying chocobo will ever be implemented?
would you like job specific chocobo?
golden, flaming, evil looking, mechanical, choices are endless
which lead us to: how will we get the rare ones?
new DOL: Chocobo Breeder?
rare drops from bosses
buy using seals or whatever
reward from achievements
find it in the wild and capture it

LOL I just can't imagine a chocobo tank. In every game Ive ever played, catching a chocobo was a pain in the ass because they were so skiddish. The idea of a bird standing up and duking it out is hilarious to me. Its like after years of running away from player battles they were all like, "I'm tired of this shit"

Actually, chocobos in battle is NOT new. They might be considered to have a bigger role than before, however, just based on the number of different uses they have for one single game, however. Personally, I hope color will mean nothing but color. I've always been a fan of black chocobos, and I'd like to have a black one without being pigeonholed into using it for one particular thing and nothing else.
As for your crazy ideas of new chocobo types (flaming, mechanical etc), I highly doubt it, and it sounds a little cheesy.
And I'm pretty sure chocobos are not flying animals. Like ostriches, they're flightless.
And a chocobo being able to run on water is ridiculous. In 7 they could only go THROUGH shallow waters. Yellow chocobos can already go through shallow water in 14. -
