How do we change the short cd mits besides tbn.

Heart of Corundum, Holy Sheltron and ESPECIALLY blood whetting have been a thorn in a lot of forum dwelling healer's sides for a long time.
Now keep in mind I like all of these skills and the flavor they give each tank but I'm starting to think maybe we can find ways to make these infringe less on the healer's fun.

Heart of corundum being a short cd 30% damage reduction is enough. They have tons of damage and a fat double charge regen. Nebula heals and gives bonus hp now so the healing is really unnecessary. In return i'd buff all the aoe attacks on gunbreaker to make its trash pulls a bit faster to compensate.

Holy Sheltron can trade the regeneration for an improved version of its old auto block. Instead of blocking 20% of damge it blocks 60% damage for the first 2 seconds of sheltron. It costs gauge to use and paladin is both a starter job and the shield tank so I think their short mit being super strong is fair

Blood whetting is tough. This ability is the main reason a lot of people play the job and warrior is a really bland and boring job without it. I propose leaving it the same but instead of healing per hit you can a stackable shield per hit. This keeps warriors feeling essentially immortal in aoe situations BUT they can't full heal away a party member's doom now.
If this ability HAS to be removed entirely then perhaps we should lean back into warrior being the tank with unnaturally high hp. We can replace blood whetting with a 30s cd HP boost that restores hp equal to the amount added to max hp like thrill of battle. I think warrior being focused on semi-frequent burst of self healing instead of constant drain tanking may be a lot healthier for the game.

The blackest night was ommitted because it doesn't heal and I think its one of the coolest abilities in the game. I just wish it was more forgiving in situations it doesn't break or more rewarding for situations that it does break.

I'd keep them to single effects, kinda. Maybe with a secondary "trigger".

• Warrior I'd keep the healing-on-hit. Can always balance the AoE variant to cap at X targets, but AoE target caps are a different topic alltogether, although I wish FFXIV would tackle them. In turn balance the single-target healing now that it's the only effect of the ability.
• Gunbreaker I'd keep at "If falling below 50%, get X heal". But, I'd remove the part where you get the healing at the end. Or, if that's a problem, you get 900 potency if triggered, 300 otherwise at the end or so.
• Paladin yeah, block, and I'd add a secondary to that. "Block next attack within 5 seconds and you can block magic attacks. If you successfully block enough damage with any block during the duration, this button becomes Shield Bash for 10 seconds, which stuns for 6 seconds and deals damage. Against targets immune to stun, it reduces damage of their next attack against you by 15% instead." (and remove shield bash as it is)
• And keep Dark Knight as is.

Basically Warrior and Gunbreaker get the healing, instead Paladin and Dark Knight get some offensive use out of their abilities, with the Pally one being slightly more defense/utility focused. But ultimately each now only does one thing really, heal-on-hit, heal-on-low, block and shield.

I think Bloodwhetting heals could stay, just make it per attack rather than per target. You could even compensate WAR with adding 10% mit somewhere else in their kit and I think WAR would feel a lot better across the board rather than being the god of content that doesn't matter and somewhat mediocre outside of it.

I’d substitute a lot of the healing with powerful healing up buffs or healing effects contingent on the healer alongside the mitigation and provide rewards for stacking short mits with a long mit because that’s what it’s supposed to do

So rather than HOC just giving excog it can absorb a portion of the healing the healer does then deliver that as an excog after. PLD could do something similar where the amount of healing put on the PLD during the short mit then confers a regen after the fact. WAR could track damage taken under bloodwhetting and the more taken (or the reverse the more dealt) the more it gains a massive healing up, like if WAR can hit for an amount roughly translating to hitting 6 targets 3 times in its window then the next heal is basically a benediction from “too angry to die” stack

Then each of the long mits could even confer bonus abilities if stacked with the short mit, like if you use holy Shelton on top of guardian it subs the regen the healer induces after for a shield

I feel like that'd just quantize the timings of short mits around those of long mits while generally disallowing smoothing of damage or narrow survival against a greater number of attacks.

I don't see any benefit to pushing short and long CDs to be bundled that couldn't be provided without doing so.

Bring back prey attacks on party members everywhere, make tank short cd aimed at covering allies instead of all those heals.

The short of it is that any "thorn in healers' sides" doesn't need reshuffles of skills' profiles/effects nearly so much as just more incoming damage events of contextually meaningful damage/threat (not in the sense of Enmity).

Sustain is sustain is sustain. The difference between %DR, flat barriers, flat healing, and %recovery is only incidental --in where the hp ends up compared to where it otherwise would-- not fundamental.

There's no issue with a Warrior healing itself directly for enough to stay alive on its own for a time any more than another tank nullifying enough damage to do the same, nor any issue with that outcome in general; the problem is just when there's nothing interesting for the healer to do for or to anyone or anything else in the meantime.

That's simply a matter of the sheer number and/or total power of our tools being excessive for the number of needs and/or total amount of need.

You really don't need to "remove" the self healing from Holy sheltron and Hoc, Both can be managable and tuned down if needed, I think the actual mitigation part of tanks is generally more of a issue then self healing outside of warrior and Paladin

Here's how I'd change the short mitigations and general sustain anyway as no one asked. (I'm sure the people will be angry that i didn't remove sustain entirely from PLD)

Paladin

• Holy Sheltron - Now a 20% Mitigation that lasts 6s, additional effect knights benediction 250 potency lasts 12s. (basic sheltron can get a 100 potency weaker regen due to plds lack of sustain early), I'd also like intervention to be gone and allow it so you can place HS on allies CD would need to be lowered to double mit though.

• Magic attacks - No longer heal.

• Guardian - Now a 30% with a 600 Potency shield.

Warrior

• Bloodwhetting - 15% Mitigation Lasts 6s, No Longer heals Per enemy (You only heal once reguardless of enemies), Heal on hit reduced to 300 potency.

• Nascent Flash - Same changes to BW, Remove Healing on self (You shouldn't be able to heal yourself while using flash on a ally

• Damnation - Now a 40% mitigation with normal vengeance effect. (Removed regen)

• Equilibrium - Heals for 1200 potency (Removed Regen)

• Shake it off - Regen removed.

Dark Knight

• Shadowed Vigil - Reduced down to a 30% Mitigation, keeps its heal effect.

Gunbreaker

• Heart of Corundum - 20% Mitigation Lasts 6s, Heal effect reduced to 500 Potency

• Aurora - Potency reduced to 200

• Great Nebula - Increases health by 10% only heals that 10%, Mitigation now 30%

I'm genuinely just in awe going through most of the suggestions in this thread and want to furiously shake my head...

Before I go and give my two cents on some suggestions I'm seeing here, first what I want to see changed about (short) mits:

1.) Nothing on the mitigation portion
2.) Bloodwhetting (Raw Int, Nascent Flash) going from per-target healing to per-cast healing akin to PLD's "Divine Magic Mastery II". Open to the idea of buffs, though it is still 2000 combined healing/shielding potency.
3.) 1-3s more time on TBN to give some potential leeway for the break timing.

These are very basic things I want, which are feasible without having to pay large attention for current fight/boss design. If we were to look at greater changes to fully distinguish each mitigation style more, then yes a lot more would ideally have to be changed - and also "some" numbers crunching would still need to be done to reasonably have all four tanks be viable in fighting the hardest content.

I rather want the enemy to do MORE damage to the tank than to nerf mitigation. This leads to proper mitigation usage being more integral and impactful rather than big HP pools doing the talking. Let the tools I have obtained be meaningful for the challenge ahead, not just my bulk. Healers being bored out of their mind, I understand the problem - but nerfing mitigation is the most boring way to "solve" this problem.

These are some things I don't want to see (which may or may not be here because of some of the posts in this thread):

• removal of the 4s buffs "Knight's Resolve", "Stem the Flow" and "Clarity of Corundum" providing an additional 15%/10% mitigation, as they were introduced to make timing short mitigation be rewarded for good timing.
• a 60% block strength effect on Holy Sheltron. 2s duration or no, this more than doubles the effective health of a Paladin for that next hit without any further mitigation needed. That's ridiculous.
• nerfing the excog-like effect on Heart of Corundum/Shadowed Vigil for not proccing by dropping below 50% health. I think you should be rewarded if you can align this in a useful way, not punished for it.
• turning Holy Sheltron's second mitigation into a block - we had this, it was awful because it does not mitigate Dot effects (Abyssos Savage was highlighting this quite well).

I'd have some neat ideas for mitigation changes, but those would involve more thorough job changes that would be something to expect for 8.X (or at least that's what I expect of it). Think DRK sacrificing a quarter of their HP to create a huge shield and having lifesteal in other places to refund the HP cost, for example.

Interesting, I could not disagree more. Yes, you describe why the short-mits ended up the way they are now. It's certainly easier to homogenize like hell, in particular with these constantly-used effects, and also automate as much as possible. Basically ensure that players have a ton of their power shoved into a 25s CD that's very difficult to mis-use, ensuring the devs can balance the boss fights statically ignoring which specific tank(s) will be present and also can just chuck whatever they want at the tanks.

But when you for example say "But it doesn't affect DoTs!"... yes, good. I main Paladin, that'd be a good thing. So Paladin is not as good at tanking against DoT-centric enemies than other tanks, awesome. Give me something to make up for it that makes me better in some other fihgts, all awesome. Class differentation and specialization, now we're talking!

But ignoring that for a second, I don't really want to see mitigation nerfed, rather I want the individual effects to be more "pure". I don't mind things being very strong and on short CDs, so long as they're singular effect. The endless tooltips of the short CDs kinda hints at the fact they're mis-used by the devs to homogenize, at they need this litany of extra effects to ensure their overall power is always reliably the same in all situations and they provide the same relative value independent of which tanks are present. I would want blocking on a Paladin to be very strong. In return, it's essentially all they do for defense! That's cool, that's more unique. Say in turn Gunbreaker has lots of HP-triggered effects, even if overall they more or less balance out, they'd feel very different to play. Compare other MMOs where some tanks are more hardy baseline, some are better against magic damage, others are more based on actively dodging, or self-healing, or whatever.

Also passive endurance is already too low as is, because recovery and mitigation are this high and damage intake also is. Tanks die too quickly, but they also heal too quickly and can mitigate too much. That's why the game is so unbalanced, because the devs didn't check how this worked/works in other MMOs that have tanking roles. Tanks are supposed to love long but also be non-trivial to recover. They don't just randomly keel over, it takes a while to bring one down. But once one is low, it'd be a time- and mana-sink to get them back up, so better be pro-active about it. But like you say that's part of a way larger deal than just one group of tank CDs, as that'd require an all-over change of the entire combat system to balance better.

On the subject of Tanks' mit, my idea is to shuffle some of the defensive and sustainability effects between abilities, here are my thoughts:

1. PLD

A. Holy Sheltron:
- 15% damage reduction for 8s
- 10% damage reduction for 4s
- provides 5 stacks of shields with a shared duration of 15s, each shield provides 2% damage reduction, every 3 seconds 1 stack is reduced (meaning a total of 10% damage reduction that gradually decrease every 3 seconds)

B. Bulwark:
- no change on the original effects
- add a new effect: provide a HoT with a potency of 250 for 12s
- (optional) reduce the ability's CD from 90s to 60s

2. WAR

A. Bloodwhetting:
- 15% damage reduction for 8s
- 10% damage reduction for 4s
- increase max HP by 15% - and heal that amount - for 12s

B. Thrill of Battle:
- increase healing recovery by 20% for 12s
- creates a barrier that absorbs damage equivalent to a heal of 400 potency for 20s
- provide a 400 potency heal on every attack executed for 6s
- (optional) reduce the ability's CD from 90s to 60s

3. GNB

A. Heart of Corundum:
- 15% damage reduction for 8s
- 10% damage reduction for 4s
- provides 3 stacks of barriers with a shared duration of 12s, each barrier is equivalent to 5% of max HP, when the effect expires, each remaining shield provides a heal of 150 potency (similar to SGE's Haima).

B. Camouflage:
- no change on the original effects
- add a new effect: Excog effect with a heal potency of 900 for 20s
- (optional) reduce the ability's CD from 90s to 60s

4. DRK

A. TBN:
- no change on the original effect
- add 2 new effects:
.if the barrier is broken within 4 seconds, restore 1000 MP
.upon barrier expiry/break, increase healing recovery by 10% for 8s

B. Dark Mind:
- no change on the original effects.
- add a new effect: life steal on each attack executed for 12s, with a heal potency of 200.
- (optional) reduce the ability's CD from 90s to 60s

also, remove the heal effects from WAR's (Shake it off) and PLD's (Divine Veil)

@ThorinG: Did a bit of numbers crunching, bit of feedback here:

• Holy Sheltron bonus mitigation VS Bloodwhetting bonus HP leads to very similar effective HP multipliers (x1.53-ish on HS, x1.5-ish on BW), so mitigation wise they are indeed similar.
   
• Timing sensitivity on the final effect of Holy Sheltron might be a bit difficult to utilize properly in 2s intervals. 3s or 4s intervals might be better/safer for actual use - but the idea is cool.
   
• Thrill of Battle might as well have you heal per target hit + have the duration of it go up to 8 or 10 seconds if it remains a 90s cooldown.
   
• [Critical] While you moved the effective HP from Thrill to Bloodwhetting (no "keeping old effect"?), you kept Bulwark as extra mitigation. Bloodwhetting's "Stem the Tide" HP shield is also nowhere to be seen. This makes Warrior far less flexible in eHP/mitigative cooldowns and can become a serious issue.
   
• [Questionable] Between 15% and 10% portions, I'd make the 15% the baseline and add 10% as the 4s bonus mitigation. Keep in mind, downgraded versions will work with the baseline mitigation and while rewarding you for bonus mitigation is good, making the bonus mitigation stronger than the base mitigation might feel a bit too punishing.
   
• Heart of Corundum "Haima" effect sounds cool. Camouflage Excog effect might as well match Camouflage's duration of 20s.
   
• TBN ideas are interesting, though I am skeptical of partial MP refund for time-sensitive TBN breaking as damage balancing could be adjusted around it. The recovery bit is cool though.

You raised some good points, thanks, i have updated some of my suggestions accordingly

I'm very opposed at the idea of cranking up damage too much. Perhaps some pieces of content would benefit from it, but first maybe we should remove the Tank Mastery 20% free mitigation that has no purpose whatsoever. However past a point I do not wish to make the game too lopsided between roles, and cranking damage enough so that it actually starts threatening tanks would literally one tap anything else that's not a tank. People will have to realize how tough tanks have become since ShB.

I'd rather have tank defense at 5 and other jobs at 2 with incoming damage at 10 rather than tank defense at 10, other jobs at 2, with incoming damage buffed to 15.

@Valence: Cranking up damage numbers isn't just a slider from 1 to 100. It can be adjusted in various ways, such as making the tank-relevant mechanics (tankbusters, the red marker) actually not do trivial damage with zero mitigation in Normal Mode & Dungeon content. The frequency on when they appear + if they are just standalone attacks or part of mechanics where other party members are participating are also all ways to make tanks & healers have to do more things. Doing so allows for DPS & Healers to not just get instagibbed if they accidently take an auto attack or two, but puts actual stress to the tanks to use their biggest strength - mitigation.

I think in a dungeon at Lv90 to Lv100, a tank eating a tankbuster raw without any mitigation should be roughly taking 80-90% of a tank's HP pool for the dungeon's minimum item level. You can live without, by just having more than minimum item level, food, tenacity, etc - but it clearly promotes mitigating those directly. Why pseudo-lethal / lethal tankbusters are only introduced at most recent EX and Savage level difficulties is genuinely beyond me.

As I said, some pieces of content could benefit from it, and tank busters sure could. But I don't want to continue seeing tanks barely flinching when there is any other source of damage (notably raid wides) when the rest of the party gets cleaved down to 30% HP. That needs to be fixed too and that would involve kneecapping Tank Mastery as a good start.

You could, or... you could do it like attacks like Delta Attack (O4S), Emerald Weapon's non-Ultima raidwide (tanks are having a tank share instead). Or have auto attacks continue happening as raidwide damage is going out.

Removing the 20% tank mastery will lead down to a lot of bottom-up balancing that may need to be done, as it affects a lot more than just raidwides & auto attacks. Best way to look at this is taking 20% of a tank's HP away and now tell them to survive tankbusters & mechanics in high-end content (Savage & Ultimate). Without further adjustment to mitigation, this can make things unreasonable if not straight up too spicy. With adjustments, it will lead to tanks still just chaining Ramparts and short mitigations where it is useful & possible to keep the raidwide damage not too painful.

Adding pressure to tanks where there might be less (or making the responsibility of mitigating for others more important) are ways to make mechanics that are not focusing on tanks still matter to them, but removal of tank mastery will "not" happen in solitude without further adjustments.

The thing is tank mastery being removed won’t fix the problem but it’s something that never should have existed in the first place because tanks already get more defence and HP from their armour

It won’t fix the core premise of this thread (the short mits) but tank mastery as a concept breaks balance of role agnostic content for no actual benefit to content where being a tank matters

I mean by that logic, tank stance mitigation shouldve never existed in the first place either, yet it did and Tank mastery is just the hold-over from that era and they balanced around it. Ideally they should "not" have added it and instead make what was previous DPS stance levels of mitigation to be the baseline, alas we don't exactly have a time machine.

It can be removed, but it will require a lot more work* than what is healthy to expect from the game devs to eventually implement - a healthy amount of skepticism and tamed expectations won't hurt.

* = to keep previous Ultimates' damage numbers in check

I disagree with the concept that adding a extra 15% for 4s rewards timing, it more so just means you should always time it inside the 4's or you miss out on half your mitigation. If you want to reward timing you'd just have a short mit on a 4s and all this "timing" would be is >click button when you see tank buster.

I've made my peace on plenty other threads why adding more mitigation and replacing barriers with self healing is just bad, it doesn't make healers more fun though it's a way of requiring them possibly for some ultimate's (ignoring weird 4 paladin scenarios).

I think the goal of changing tank kits should be a overall reduction in kits rather then just changing a core fundamental of tanking which has been self sustain, as yes sustain is a problem but it's by far not the only problem and likely the part in tanks that feels most responsive other then barriers (which again simply replacing all self heals with barriers is a strange work around to make mitigation heavy jobs even more mitigation heavy.

20% passive mitigation should be looked into, short mits effectiveness should be look into, if you want to "time it" im not against them being 4s but one mitigation effect, I think personally 6s is fine, remove stacking mitigation effects on short mits, 40% mits need to be nerfed, Self healing needs to be tuned down but is fine, Divine veil/shake aren't that bad regen needs to go off shake. Healers should gain stronger single target mits to have some more reasonability of the tanks.

Though theirs a billion ways they can take tank short mits, sustain ect. I much rather them just tune things down across the board rather then making paladin some weird block and shield god that has no healing while warrior gets to be a healer tank still :]

I played versions of the game where we did have more basic style short mitigations (Shadowbringers) and versions where short mitigations were actually not exactly present on every job, or at least not in the basic ability form (Stormblood). To this day I think the Lv82 tank upgrades are among the coolest additions to the mitigation suite and boiling them down to basic cooldowns again is just boring.

What makes the level 82 upgrades to short mitigations arguably interesting is timing but the idea that two stacking effects is needed feels off I don't mind two effects but I rather they do different things at least instead of losing value after 4s then going away after another 4s, I personally like the upgrades for the healing effects and how they have different niches, I think wars is obviously too strong, but having a excog or regen heal on PLD can be nice and has a different feel. Early level sheltron is already 4s and I think the mitigation timing aspect is about as reward has holy sheltrons.

Though I think if you want to make short mits interesting do what you do with dark knights TBN make their usage somehow tied to damage in a way this would actually reward timing in my opinion.

Bloat passive modifiers should go first, yes, but tbf, that's more than just Tank Mastery. Even without it, Tanks have far more passive eHP just by nature of (Magic) Defense and literally just having way more HP.

Those can happen regardless, and the "bottom-up balancing" is actually minimal given how many things were only ever meant to go on the tank and would remain negligible to tanks even if they were suddenly taking 25% more raid-wide damage (which still just means getting overhealed as they take less damage than everyone else due to higher Defense / Magic Defense). And it should happen regardless, as Tank Mastery never should have happened.

That's an utterly different logic.

Original tank stance mitigation was an at-cost safety layer one could fall back to, not something we'd have at all times.
