Why is it so difficult Ranking up from Bronze to Crystal

Here we go again, I know people are going to come out of the woodwork on this one, but I will say it.

Why is it so difficult ranking up from bronze, I've been playing ranked for the past week trying to level up to just bronze 2.

I've put in maybe 80-90 of my matches of my total Conflict pvp of around 200. Never once saw anything past bronze 3 in recent months. It's literally impossible for people. Considering there's ranks beyond Crystal. That's what should be tracked. For every one or two matches I win, I'll lose like 4 in a row. I'll do moderately okay in a match, maybe get a kill or two from the back, but the only thing that matters is winning. It doesn't reward time or effort put in. You could play 1000 matches in a single season, but if half of those are strategic losses, you're not getting to crystal, let alone gold or platinum; and considering the random nature of matchmaking and the lack of communication in it, a random solo player will be turned off completely from even trying.

Here's a solution, considering you get virtually nothing if you don't hit crystal.

Wins are what level your ranks up to Crystal. Past crystal, that's when the competitive nature comes out, and the leader board takes front and center with consistent repetitive wins.

For the minutiae, keep the levels and stars the same, so to level from bronze to silver, you still need to progress the various B3/2/1 etc. But the stars dont decrease on a loss. To earn a full star, lets say 3 wins a star, so thats 10 wins for an individual level with the rank up to the next level win, an 32 wins to go from no rank to Silver. And if you have no rank, just starting its 1 win a star to progress to bronze 3, so four wins for rank B3.

So when you hit gold and platinum it takes another level so you'd need like 40 or so wins for each of those, and diamond you have 5 levels so you'd need like 50 or so wins to hit crystal.

To keep the competitive nature, of pvp and if you play in crystal or above, you fall back to the crystal rating for next season, to get a boost into the competitive scene. if you hit a rank below crystal, you keep the rank, but restart at the lowest tier. So if you hit silver 2, you restart at silver 3. If you don't gain a rank to the next tier in a season you reset to the lowest tier ofnyour rating, you go back to the previous tier.

So example, you get to gold 3 in one season, you get reset to gold 4 in the next, but only play 5 ranked matches, not going back up to gold 3, you get sent down to silver 3 in the next season. And same for the other rating below crystal. To keep crystal, if you've hit crystal in one season, you keep it for the next season, but if you fail to rank up past that and don't reach omega in the next season, you go back down to diamond 5.

This kind of system probaly lengthens out leveling a players rating, but makes it friendlier and more inviting. They're still working just as hard as anyone else, but the progession is no longer dictated by sheer dumb luck of who your teammates are. As well as considering you can have multiple characters and play in different tiers, so you could have a team of players who succeed regularly in omega or ultima level matches, playing on different characters in bronze and silver level ratings. Completely ruining other peoples progress. Where's the fairness in that?

So again, from Bronze to Crystal, per tier, you have 3 stars, each star needs 3 wins, and then a winning match to rank up, so 10 wins per tier. And I'll even back track on lossimg some progress, if you don't win a rank up match, say you're at bronze 1 with three complete stars, if you loss the rank up match, you lose the third star completely, so you need at least 4 more wins. If you lose a rank up match from tiersnin the same rating, ie B3 to B2, you lose a single third of your star. So you need at least 2 more wins.

You might be at your appropriate rank still if you can't climb higher solo. I climbed last season on two different characters from unranked to crystal and my wins were 57 and 60 respectively (so around same winrate). What jobs are you playing? I feel like DPS jobs are typically more impactful at lower ranks then you can swap around depending on what rank you are. If you are truly a higher ranked player climbing should not be that difficult until you start hitting the higher ranks.

I would say try some more meta jobs like PCT/SCH/DRK since they are extremely strong currently and might offer you an advantage over a team not having said jobs.

Is your solution to put everybody that just plays the mode into crystal? You know that the reason lower ranks stop popping after a while is at least partially because half of the players have climbed up since there is no deranking below platinum? What do you think is going to happen if there is no deranking below crystal?

On top of it, you'll generate massive skill discrepancies in crystal games if you put literally everybody that can just play the game a certain amount of times to get there. Skill gaps are colossal in diam-omega games without this and it generates an insane amount of toxicity already.

Progressing is hard if you're not particularly skilled or have a run of poor luck, but that's the nature of the game. One thing I do agree with is that it's silly to have no rewards at all below Diamond. The way to fix that isn't pushing everyone into crystal though. As another person pointed out, that would just make games a mess. What's needed is something to keep people at low-mid skill levels engaged with the content.

IMO the answer to the reward problem is to increase the number of tiers on the series reward track and add a couple of commendation crystals to those higher tiers. It currently takes roughly 10-12 hours to reach rank 25 for the main series reward and another 3 hours or so to reach 30. Increase it to 50 and have it take 4x as long to reach that point with a single commendation crystal at 40 & 50 and you'll give people a reason to continue playing even if their climb isn't going well. It would take too long for people to get it through daily FL, so they'd have to queue. If people are going to play 50 matches of CC anyway then they're likely to choose ranked to kill two birds with one stone. Boom, active queues at low-mid ranks throughout the season with no reason for any persistent player to be salty about having a couple dozen hours rewarded with absolutely nothing. It also doesn't undermine the nature of ranked rewards. People who are good can earn a full set of rerun glams in a single season. People who need to run the extended series would need 9 months to buy a single piece of gear.

This might just be a you thing as it's not that hard to rank up in PVP at all. As someone who usually ends up at least Diamond/Crystal most seasons, I started this season in Bronze because of taking a break for a few seasons and in 3 days with only 70ish games I'm already back into Platinum and more skilled players could easily do that faster.

It really comes down to time/effort/experience and there are communities out there that can help you with learning from where you're going wrong.

Often times in the low rank games I've seen it mostly came down to people playing too aggressive and not knowing when to back out to heal or people running into a 1v5 scenario and dying on repeat. Sure you can get strings of bad luck but if you are skilled enough to play in Crystal or higher ranks you'll get out of the low ranks fairly quickly. Not everyone has that skill to play at that rank, just like not everyone has the skill to go into savage, and that's ok. They just need to find the time or resources to get them to that point if they so wish.

Can almost guarantee this would kill ranked queues for low ranks. In fact I'm pretty sure it USED to work this way for a time, though I might be mistaken.

What's really needed is a reason for people to get into PVP. Right now, if you don't hit at least Diamond all you get is framer portraits for that season and trophy crystals which with how series passes work you'll almost always end up capped on them if you play enough. I don't personally know what would incentivize more people to get into ranked or PVP in general but they need something to bring in more people. As it is now, most people end up funneling to Platinum and then the lower queues tend to die until the last week or so of a season.

I doubt that heavily, everyone I've asked for help has either one, said basically what you and others have to said, 'Oh it's not hard to rank up at all......I can get to crystal in one weekend. And everyone else that can't sucks and is nothing but trash.' Or two, if I ask for help with matches, and learning, suddenly they're nowhere to be found, extra shifts at work suddenly appeared in their name and they ghost me and eventually remove me. And the ones that do offer "help" have no willingness to help me improve my own class, it's always oh get this other class and use that one. You shouldn't use what you're using now.

And on the classes I have used, and understood, I don't know how I'm not doing damage. Like paltry sums in comparison to enemy counterparts using the same class against, I will hound someone, and just watch as I'm doing virtually nothing, they're losing health in 10% increments to my attacks, and they touch a potion, turn around and two tap me. And then in the reverse, someone's hounding me, I turn around and again they two tap me. I have seen many times, white mages be at the top as damage and kill leaders in games. And I'm off in the back dead, cosplaying as a carpet, because apparently a tank can get one shotted, and a dps can't do damage, and my healing means nothing.


So don't go around saying shit like 'OH IT'S A YOU PROBLEM".

No, F* that, for some reason, I can't kill anything because why could I? My attacks do far less damage than a healers apparently, and my tank classes die just as quick while it's impossible to finish off anything at low health as a dps. And anyone I try asking for help in this toxic hellhole just says oh I don't have a problem, so you must be trash to be getting horrible matches back to back where for every one or two I win, I lose 4. A win streak? Whats that?

This game's pvp is the hardest pvp I've ever had the displeasure of playing. No rewards for time put in, don't mention the series board, that's not a reward, thats a participation trophy. If I wanted those, I'd go play casual. I get the same exp from casual matches as I do from ranked. I am moderately successful at every other type of pvp I've played, be it shooters, other mmos, mobas, you name it. I've probably played it and did well. But this? FF14 has the worst pvp system I've ever played, because the game isn't made for it. And again, no reward for time invested. If I can't break out of bronze, I could win 200 matches with a few thousand played in bronze, I get jack shit for my time. I get 1k trophy crystals and a bronze portrait plate I'll never use, because why would I? Just getting that might as well come with a note saying you suck, nice fail loser. Because that line is all I get when I ask for help.

I'm... curious... as to just whom you're asking help from and where. Because, put in your words there, it doesn't sound like the kind of help requested is-

Nah nevermind. Tad dodgy that's all. PvP in here is not so much hard as dodgy I find. Not talking just about mechanics...

Anyway. You say you're puzzled by how you're apparently "not doing as much damage" as your peers. I don't want to appear condescending when I say this, but have you sat down and looked at the numbers? Damage of skills vs what health totals each of the various jobs have. Things like that. Then you can factor in more bitty factors like buffs/debuffs. I mean doing this from the comfort of the pier, not mid-match. It helps a little to be able to murder by numbers where you can.

Running to stage pots to tag them is a pretty common strategy, they heal for 30k. Maybe you could take more note of where they are without as much mental fumbling, and also building an instinctual knowing of when they might reappear. Recognize the chronic pot-taggers early, or become one yourself as a form of aggression. You said you play tanks, DRK, and WAR to an extent are good at this.

Stage gimmicks, much as they are irksome, are something you need to take into account more as well. Especially if you're a job that can interact with them well (MNK is a prime example, with LB there are certain jobs it can trap on the fire of Volcanic Heart for instance, and they'll just die, there's nothing that can be done about that short of an ally healing/shielding them).

You say you're being two-tapped, again by which jobs? Without LBs, some jobs can peak by the 3rd gcd before fading into some downtime, and many of those have slow wind-ups for animations. You have a lot of time to react if this is an ambient 1v1 situation you're talking about. Of course it's different if this is a concerted effort, but you sound like you're talking about tit for tat 1v1.

I think you may have the wrong attitude about rewards in this game though, it's mainly fluff, it doesn't mean anything. Especially going back to the hinted at dodginess. For the record I use the bronze background on my tank glamour right now as it uses the defiant duellist coat and that just doesn't match up well with any of the other backgrounds. It's just a colour my friend.~ Coppery hues are kind of nice!

It’s not hard, just learn the game: every job, ability, LB, job interactions, map gimmicks, mind games, player behavior, regional culture, and more. The more you know, the easier the climb.

Going from unranked to Crystal is often RNG-heavy for the inexperienced and takes many matches, but experience cuts that down.

I’ve seen inexperienced players swap to GNB for an easier climb on NA/EU, though it’s tougher on JP (I assume you from Mana too).

It usually takes me ~40 wins from unranked to Crystal, if I can do it, you can too.

I find it actually easier to climb on JP because there is enough players to ensure that skill gaps aren't too massive all across the board which subjects players a lot less to the rng / coinflip effect.

That’s interesting. From my experience, climbing from unranked to Crystal feels similar in both EU and JP, usually taking me around 40 wins in each, even with high latency in both. In Season 8 on EU-Light, I placed #11 on 450ms, though I haven’t done the same on JP yet since I mostly stick to FL/RW.

You implied EU has a skill gap compared to JP (?), but it works both ways: it enables strong players to dominate and hard carry more often than in JP where the mode is more team-reliant and balanced. In this sense, EU can be easier to climb from unranked to Crystal provided you have enough experience (Beyond Crystal is a different story, which OP isn’t concerned with).

I genuinely believe anyone can reach Crystal, even without much experience, sheer will and some RNG can get you there. I hope OP and anyone reading this doesn’t give up.

We had a similar system like this during the 1st 2 seasons, and during the 2nd season there were complaints from the few people that didn't make it to Crystal that they weren't getting any games either due to being late, being bad, or both. Those that made it to Crystal rank could care less about those that didn't make it. So when the idea of adding demotion came to light they push back hard.
If you push for this, you're definitely going to create dead ranks platinum and below punishing the few players that decide to start late season. Personally, I would rather that we get a proper rank mode to where everyone can be demoted all the way to bronze with majority of the playerbase sitting between upper silver/lower gold, but I'm just a minority here.

As far as dying as a tank is concerned, you need to change your mindset. You cannot treat pvp like it's pve. Roles does not exist in pvp. Tanks, healers, and dps are nonexistent. It's just the class itself.

You should try the pvp revival discord (use google as i don't know the rules on discords here) and ask questions there. The only way to improve at pvp is to play it a lot. Just like anything in this game you aren't going to get great resources inside the game itself or on these forums.

Yeah it could also have been tied to just luck on my end. My highest peak has been on JP the first season I tried (last season). Current season is being a lot more painful at crystal for some reason.

You will always have a stronger player if you're climbing and still not at your skill level, and it's gonna be you, and this should make you streak enough until the skill gap thins. Once you're around your skill level on JP however, you'll have a lot less games where omega players meet fresh diamonds, and you'll also have less players in diamond that have no business being there for example. Problem being that no matter what you do, if you get paired with those, they'll anchor your game so much that it's gonna be a pain. You'll tell me, you can also be lucky and have the opponent get this, which is definitely true, but I do feel that in both cases when this happens, it will completely much up pretty much muck up any attempt at making plays to turn the game in your favor. This will not be all of your games fortunately but in my opinion it generates a lot of white noise in the games you get and on top of it since it's longer to find games, or even have active times on western DCs, then you waste more time imo.

It could also be a matter of playstyle differences I guess, even though overall the differences between regions as you say are wildly overblown. JP just tends to have a lot more discipline, doesn't run everywhere like monkeys as much, but less creativity (and doesn't seem to know the concept of ratting).

I played about 21 or 22 matches this season. Won 17. Dominated rather hard but I've placed higher in the past.. Even with a high ass win rate and streaks the climb was unbearably slow when starting at the bottom of bronze. I'd only made it to Silver 1 before I was bored of CC again. Would seriously love for ranks to be pt based not wins so if you're clearly a top performer you climb out a bit faster. I don't have the time to sit and play CC all day when I work 6 days a week and play other things.

Then remembering why I stopped playing CC at all in the past because in higher ranks the matchmaking felt horrible since you could have lower ranks placed on your team and the most effective counter to a bad player being on your team repeatedly would be to play their job. The rewards aren't enticing enough to make me suffer through it again

You've only played 20 games and think it climbs slowly?

Now I don't necessarily disagree with the solutions, most multiplayer competitive games have a general ranking (often with an attached point based MMR) and a hidden elo behind. The hidden elo is there to ensure that the more you win the more the system will match you against higher hidden elos, and the more you lose it will do the opposite. Of course the more you win against higher and higher players, the more points you'll gain which will mechanically pull your ranking/MMR up as well, and the more you lose against lower rated opponents, the more points you'll start losing and your ranking will plummet faster and faster.

This system is generally there for the system to find out where players belong without having to make them climb all the way from the bottom. For instance those games generally have unranked players that just hop in fresh randomly match against opponents and if they win, they'll get a way higher rated one after, and if they lose for example, then the system will find somebody in between until it finally places the player roughly in the league where they belong after a certain amount of games, instead of just making them climb from bronze no matter what. In SC for example if you're so good and win all your unranked games you'll probably get dropped in the Master league directly, and in XIV this would translate into crystal, with the appropriate MMR rating. All of this is determined by the hidden elo that is able to swing low and high a lot more than the actual rating, and is what's used by the matchmaking.

In XIV, the matchmaking only bases itself on the general player ranking/MMR, which is a lot more... basic. But I think that's also a difference of vision from the devs that do envision climbing through the whole ranks as a grind in itself. MMO mentality in a nutshell, even if it makes you smurf until you get out of leagues where you don't belong. And similarly, you'll have the opposite happen as well, with people climbing through sheer streaks of luck so high that they end up where they don't belong, and won't lose enough points once they sandbag those games because maybe the next games they'll get carried again.

If the majority of matches would have fair matchmaking, you would on average climb higher as a good player.
The fairness of matchmaking is just not a constant, it is changing every few hours or daily. Because the playerpool is simply not big enough. Which we can see by seeing what ranks can even play with each other, just for queues that pop. They gave us easier popping matches, but have thrown out meaning to the ranks out of the window. Which in itself, is not a bad thing. Because it is a game, and we don't want to waste our time. It is just bad, when you pretend to be a serious PvP mode.

You can be stuck in unranked-silver for 100 games, and then clear gold-diamond in 20 matches. What does this say about the game mode? Was it you who was at fault as player? Or is the system just too random, that you aren't able to carry anyone efficiently in lower ranks. Maybe some jobs can do better than others, but even they are not immune.

Some of my diamond matches i was getting matched with top 10 players due to low pop. They were extremely sweaty matches lol. That said i don't think that should be a common occurrence but it sadly seems to be.

If you're getting stuck for 100 games in unranked silver then it may sound a little harsh but you still have progress to do. I don't have that problem in leagues below crystal to progress, but I used to be "stuck" longer in plat/diam in the past because I lacked the skill to be influential enough in my games at that level. Now I can clear out of those relatively fast.

But I do agree that as someone that plays on JP as well on the side, the difference with EU is night and day because in JP you're mostly matched with players of relative skill due to their player pool being way more sustainable. This incidentally makes the climb a bit less frustrating with less coin flip - or "white noise" - due to the crazy skill differences you find on EU, which tend to soak a lot of the influence you sometimes can have on games if those gaps are sharp enough to sandbag your game (or the opposite if you're the lower bracket and paired with top players).

cuz its an unpopular mode with a significantly smaller player base compared to say savage raiding. there's way too many people in the lower ranks and way too many win traders in the upper ranks. just give up on it. square will never make a meaningful, competitive PVP. it's just hot garbage from CC to Frontline.

For me it is getting especially harder because there are currently rarely matches at my current rank and if they DO happen they are very late in the evening or during the night.

It frustrates me a bit that I have to play till very late to get a decent amount of matches and also nowadays I have to spent a lot of time (5-10 mins per match) in queue before a match starts.
If the match then lasts maybe 5-10mins I have spent 10-20 mins per match. This means I might only get to play 3-5 matches during an hour.

For a regular guy it is almost impossible to consistently rank up if you only get to play so few matches.
I am on EU btw.

I feel like the lowest ranks as well as the highest ranks can be "extreme" in their own ways.

Unranked to gold is such a mixed bag because you can have total beginners together with people who can keep up with plat (and potentially diamond) players. Some team compositions (not just in terms of jobs picked but also in terms of variation in experience) just seem to be uncarriable. Yes, good players do make it out of there faster because they are still better at systematically influencing their games. But it still feels a lot more chaotic and random. If you are "ok" you may be stuck in silver or gold because you do well in a good team but just are not good enough to carry/have this kind of systematic influence if it's a bad team.

When it comes to the top ranks, at least on EU servers the difference between diamond and crystal+ is really noticeable for me. Even though there's definitely an increase in skill between gold/plat and plat/dia it still feels manageable or "in the same ballpark" if that makes sense.
Getting matched with crystal, let alone omega+, players makes me legit uncomfortable though because the skill gap feels too big. I can immediately notice it's a whole different league and my performance compared to the rest of the team is really weak.
I know there's no way around it because there just aren't enough players but I think this is kinda doomed to breed animosity between ranks. Because understandably crystal+ players don't want dead weight in their games but lower-rank players can't control who they're matched with and obviously they need to keep playing to get better.

It's just a really unfortunate constellation.

Yeah, if you have a job (and/or a healthy sleep schedule) then ranking up is really hard, if not impossible. Sometimes the queue only really starts to get active at around midnight. Makes for a really frustrating experience esp. during the week.

Another unfortunate side effect once you reach Diamond and get placed into Diam/Crystal/Omega games, is that as a weaker player in Diam, potentially newer at the mode as well, people immediately identify you as the weakest link, and will target call you at every opener and for most engagements later. It's not hazard the same people always get marked "1" before the gates even open in the enemy team. It's often a guaranteed kill, they just explode. Well one silver lining is that it WILL teach you how to defend/bait.

It makes the experience of newer players miserable. You'll never see this happen on JP (you see some people marked at the start, but not because they're the weakest link, just because the caller thinks they're a target to go for), because the skill gaps aren't huge and the pool of players is a lot bigger.

Does it sometimes happen that this kind of targeting is also used on your own team mates to communicate to the rest of the party who is perceived to be the weakest link? As in, another player marks and then unmarks you with 1 at the start of the game before the gates open?

Hard to say. Perhaps it's their way to say "I'm warning you, I'm watching you". Or perhaps it's just them trying to use something less haram than the ignore mark.

During a game it can often mean something similar, like "use your damn LB already" or "what are you doing".
