No, in fact we just discovered the secret enemy behind it all was a completely unheard of, mind shattering revelation, couldn't have possibly seen it coming:
Ascian
7.3 just released, so no.
I really hope so!
If they largely re-design classes to feel distinct and unique again while keeping the same level of boss quality, I think it'll be a huge turn-a-bout.
If they keep going with this trajectory with a lack of care for writing, well... Idk, maybe their next MMO project is on the horizon.
7.3 was very satisfying for me, personally. Wuk Lamat and Sphene still got their "big damn moment" (which is fair to do for the plot built up and they do have genuine fans) but there were so many signs of attention and care put into this patch.
We weren't stuck experiencing everything through Wuk, they only put 20 seconds of Smile into a cutscene for one moment, they had puzzles, it was a lot of story, cutscenes were chock full of specially tailored animations.
Wuk Lamat and Sphene are now sitting on their thrones with satisfying conclusions and we're left to move on to the next big thing.
The Winterers do intrigue me. Why was Calyx supported by an Ascian when his plan didn't line up with the Convocation? Why are they trying to achieve immortality by any means necessary?
I'm already theorizing maybe they're trying to beat the inevitable heat-death. That was really the only one we couldn't help with toughing it out and finding meaning. A team of villains trying make a way for people to endure beyond the eternal winter.
I really enjoyed the story at first with the investigation and the special instance with the mini puzzles. The vibe was here, the mood was good.
After that though, we were back to shounen writing and cringy lines. And an epilogue that seemed to never end zzZzzz
wait another year and half
Dawntrail had some hiccups (especially during early 7.0) storywise, but the later MSQ, and the post patch MSQ has been as good, if not better, than what we had in other expansions.
7.3 was stellar, the
puzzle section
was amazing, for instance, and very innovative.
Well... its not convulsive them, could be pulling a KH and having someone else wearing the robes. As for 8.0, I dont have high hopes, considering theyre already having issues getting things done, there is just too massive a list of changes/fixes folks want see, to really address at this point... Theyd really have to pull something out of their asses, do some massive hiring or bring in another branch of SE.
They said the whole Hydaelyn and Zodiark story was done. There's still several Ascians still alive out there.
Whether people like it or not, things like Ascians, the Allagan Empire, the Shards of Etheirys, and Primals will always be part of the story as it's what the lore and universe has been built upon.
It's over
I have killed Dawntrail

I mean tbf, we really only got rid of the ones that messed with mostly our shard. We still don't know which ones did things to the 13th, so it goes without saying that there are probably more out there doing things (which we know there officially are now). I just hope things pick up more.
Edit: Might be Deudalophon
Wait, are you suggesting devoting an entire season of Game of Thrones to how best to have fun roasting marshmallows and singing kumbaya at summer camp with your besties might not be totally in keeping with the themes and caliber of the genre? Le gasp!
I think this image alone has more symbolic impact than the entire expansion. Dispelling the blissful naivety of childish things may not be pretty, but it is necessary if we are to grow. Bravo!
The entire Ascian/Hydaelyn storyline is something Yoshida has said he didn't want to do, but it was dumped on him by virtue of succeeding Tanaka. You can see the "twist" in 7.3 as Hiroi and whoever else throwing up their hands and saying they don't know what they're doing.
Yes. But clearly they lied.
Dawntrail was supposed to be a fresh start. Well let me tell you, besides the graphics, absolutely nothing feels fresh, the formula is as stale as fossilized bread, Jobs, for years, have been playing like the previous expansion's jobs but each time they get a little bit less unique and easier. So by now, you are basically playing half a job from Stormblood.
It's doomed man. There was another thread asking what I wanted for 8.0 and I realized I haven't thought about it because I have no hope. I'm just killing time in this game out of familiarity and laziness to try something else. And that's on me.
Secretly I hope SE will save my interest but I just don't see it happening. I also did promise I'd stay for at least 7.0 if the revamped the graphics, which I have held on. It's so bad though I couldn't even bring myself to finish the tier. It's just so samey. The game feels like a sensory deprivation tank when I log in.
They did want to finish the Ascian and Summoning arc, that's true.
But it's also the case that we didn't account for all the Ascians yet and SE don't like to leave loose ends. Not wanting to leave loose ends is why they have explored almost every piece of lore the game has ever made to the point they're finding the remaining crumbs to make a story out of. One of those crumbs is the few remaining Ascians that were unaccounted for. They could easily just say "they died somehow by other WoLs like Arbert or Shadowhunter", but SE usually doesn't do that.
Most likely they are going to explore it to move us away from Dawntrail given the game was better received under the Ascians. If you think about it, they never really moved away from the concept of monsters that endlessly consume aether. Sin eaters contain an abundance of soul energy, presumably of their victims, that all enter and overwhelm you. The 13th has monsters made up of, again, lots of souls and they endlessly consume more souls. The bosses in Dawntrail endlessly run off soul energy and they often try to endlessly collect souls to power them, draining worlds of their souls, and this is no clearer than with Zoraal Ja who killed a lot of people so he could use their souls.
So they never really abandoned the concept of "monsters that endlessly devour aether at the expense of people's lives". Although we are kinda past Ascians at this point, we may as well continue fighting them given we didn't abandoned this concept, and anything to move us on from Dawntrail is probably a good thing.
I'm all for it but it really feels like:
