What's our next Companion? Is it a Moogle?

We've been leveling the same chocobo companion for over 11 years now. Most of us have capped its level by now.

The UI calls chocobo a "Companion" rather than just "chocobo" that's summoned by gysahl greens, so it feels like they intended on having more than one companion at some point during its creation.

So what is it, and why is it a fluffy flying furry moogle?

Our minions could fit that role or the old squad members.

It was funny being able to talk about your chocobo to Ardbert. Like damn I haven't thought about the bird for 2 years.

1.0 actually had an NPC for a companion. You quested with them as part of the whole Path of the Twelve storyline with Minfilia.

I assume my companion died during the Calamity :( But it would be amazing if you had the option to be "reunited" with your 1.0 companion for characters that played back then, or to form a new relationship with a Cartenau survivor NPC even if your character wasn't part of that.

Oh wow I never knew that. That's awesome. Maybe that info is lost but either a retainer or squadron has existed since then!

I wish they would let us choice honestly with beastmaster let us tame w/e we want as our new one and let us pick anything in the game w want without the devs bias on "it doesnt suit a wol for x nonsense" let me have a zombie or skeleton slave as a companion

I've been mentioning about the Path Companions for years! And yes, it was assumed they died in the Calamity (they were an Ala Mhigan member of the Path of the Twelve, Miniflia's predecessor organisation to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Alas they weren't really a 1.0 equivelant to the Chocobo Companion as they only appeared during certain Path of the Twelve main scenario quests, which ended at patch 1.18 - the story then became the 'Seventh Umbral Era' story that led into the Calamity and 1.0's shut down, and the Path Companion was never seen again; and sadly they couldn't just be summoned whenever you wished, and by all accounts, when Yoshi took over leading FFXIV's development, the Path Companion was abandoned as a gameplay idea).

Alas sadly now I think also the Chocobo Companion has been equally abandoned by SE as redundant content not worth further expansion on, and given player behaviour guides development, can you really blame them? The player tail wagged the development dog unfortunately and the Chocobo Companion was unfortunately a victim of that.

I don't have the comment saved nor do I remember exactly which Live Letter or Q&A it was mentioned in, because it was alllll the way back in early SB or maybe even HW, so it's vague enough in my memory that I can't recite it verbatim so take it with a grain of salt if it makes you feel better- but Yoshida had stated that they do not want to make another companion because of the spaghetti codehow "complicated" it is/was to program another "pet" that can be programmed with different stances and a skill tree, and that creating another leveling system for another companion was essentially "too complicated" or "too time-consuming."

Like already mentioned, it just seems to be another neglected and abandoned system created early-on in the game (like Squadrons, among other things), and the devs only acknowledge it in the sense that despite not being interested in improving it, they do still like to create paper doll outfits for chocobos as content "rewards."

But. But... With how they seem to be continually investing resources into single-player-proofing the game ("we added Duty Support to a 10 year-old ARR dungeon guys! look how productive we are!"), I wouldn't give-up hope completely. Maybe later down the line (sooner rather than later at this point <_<; ), when XIV has kind of hit where XI is right now (with low activity necessitating dozens of Trust NPCs), the need for another companion might arise... And then they'll magically somehow be able to implement one then.

I want either Statice or Feo

I want them do improve the stuff we have already. How many things do we have in game that once the path had ended just became another forgotten toy thrown on the pile.

I've thought for a while that new companions, at least reskins with the same skills, would be a fun addition to the game. There's so many candidates, especially ones like Maggie from the end of ARR.

I'm sure they'll add companion moogles right after they get around to removing accuracy from chocobo skills.

What I would give to have the company chocobo be an honorary Scion (or mascot) in the MSQ.

All that customization, all that barding, just for it all to go to waste. I wanna adventure with my bird buddy, dang it!

I feel like the amaro would have been the perfect occasion, but they missed that train.

I love the Amaro as well - maybe even more than chocobo. Nothing warms my heart more than a loyal animal companion.

A pity they aren't expanded upon.

Really is cruel the way our squaddies have been treated. We worked with them, learned and grew together, tried to eat the sausages and cutlets. Then just dumped them in the barracks for years with no real purpose. If they're retired, let them hang out on Island Sanctuary.

See I would think that a Morbol would be a cheap taming because it has conal AoE with like 7 different negative effects.

The Accuracy is technically relevant if you are attempting to fight enemies that are a higher level than you.

That was Future's Perfect, the final 'original' 1.0 main scenario quest before Yoshi took over the helm and the story was changed to the 'Seventh Umbral Era' storyline, and yes, Gaius shot them in that scene (he then went to shoot the player's character too, but a well timed strike from Yda deflected that). However, shortly thereafter that scene, the Path Companion was shown alive and well (albiet injured), and the last that was mentioned of them at the end of that mission was Minfilia stated that the Path Companion had sought medical attention from the ALC's Guild in Ul'dah for their injuries... and that was the last they were heard from.

ARR's main scenario later mentioned that a lot of the Path of the Twelve's members participated in the Battle of Carteneau (and perished there - this is why Minfilia agreed to amalgamate what was left of the Path of the Twelve into the Circle of Knowing to form the Scions of the Seventh Dawn) so it can be assumed that fate sadly befell the Path Companion too (it's what I believe happened to Enki's Path Companion Imarah at least).

Yeah I don't remember the last time I used my squadrons. But it was also a broken system. The AI now is leaps and bounds more advanced than the squadrons, so I have a feeling they'll not be returning.

Would love to be able to use a combat retainer as my companion, but that probably won't ever happen, even if the devs do revisit this someday, since not every player necessarily has a combat retainer. But one can dream...

I agree I miss my little path companion so much, and I often wonder what happened to her...maybe she died in the calamity but you never know we can always dream of being reunited :)

That sounds like a really cool feature they should revisit… I wasn’t here for that so I don’t know how it worked, but like Turnintino said above, I’d love to be able to use one of my battle retainers for a companion!

I like this idea! We could adventure alongside our squad members and they'd assist us according to their job.

awww it was a nice feature, mine was a Lala and she was so sweet I do miss her :) It would be nice to have again it would make a nice change even though I love my chocobo.
