Do they eat anything else? really... I get this is meant to be charming.. but this is 16th centaury mexico.. they ate more than tacos..
If they did an expansion in scotland and all the ate was haggis it would equally as annoying.. i thought DT was about building culture? but this is kinda ....

My understanding is it's meant to be a reference to FF11's tacos. Which itself I assume was a reference to America since there are tacos there.

For OP, I mean in SE's defense that last image has two other foods, but can I just say I don't get tacos- especially hard shell. Excuse me, eating a bowl of interesting salad is less messy. Who signed up for the most messy way to eat meat, cheese, chips, and other perfectly fit for a salad ingredients? If I want half my food on my hand or worse, the floor, I'll keep a hardshell in mind. Burrito though? Sign me up.... amazing design.

The writers and consultants have a very surface level understanding of culture. Every other part of the world of ff14 has deeper and much much more nuanced culture.

Also, it's like complaining that the only thing they drink in Coerthas is hot chocolate. It's a bit silly.

It's in the title "Fantasy" maybe tacos are just the type of street food they're being presented as. Sometimes the cigar is just a cigar.

This game isn't real life. While there may be things inspired by it, it is a fantasy. Once you start overthinking about things, you're going to realize this game has been that way since the start. Don't ever overthink on video games. They are entertainment. Not a documentary of accurate history. Tacos are just a meme in DT and it probably won't be the last time it gets brought up.

They promised big fat tacos in the Weapons' theme and never delivered, I say we were owed plenty now.

For some reason all I can think of now is that one Endwalker thread where a guy said Venat is the equivalent of a Happy Meal.

I find myself wondering some things...
Is Wuk Lamat a taco ?
Is Zero a bowl of curry ? Perhaps they give off more of an apple vibe ?

I'm pretty sure the only media the writers have engaged in is shonen - anime. So you probably get why their writing is tropey and childish.

Zero feels like a green apple starts out sour but the more you eat the more you like.

I'm originally from the NYC area. Whenever people I know are making a trip to NYC, they always ask me one thing: "Where is the best pizza?"

I'm not saying NYC pizza is the best. That's not the point. But, it is like the tourist thing to do. What is NYC known for? Pizza! (I guess?) Why not the same in the DT areas? Maybe in the FFXIV universe, Tuliyollal is known for tacos. So, naturally these tourists from other parts of Eorzea are going to gorge on tacos.

The "respecting cultures and making them authentic" is just a P.R line.

Fantasy cultures should have nothing to do with the cultures in real life anyway. It's quirky real life references, not a 1 for 1 copy.

BUT even then, its kinda hilarious how the role quest tribes are far more interesting as concepts than the tribes we actually get. They seemed like glass display cultures, than actual living breathing characters.
