Just throwing an idea out there, what if we had a job that's a combination of crafting/fighting class? The Machinist when off the the battlefield would repair and create things such as Magitek Armor, Automatons (for PUP), Guns (gunblades?), and the like. However, Machinists can utilize a smaller, more mobile version of the magitek armor for battling (since it's main weapon would be something such as a wrench).
The class itself wouldn't get much gear, however the magitek's strength increases with the Machinists craftsmanship/M.craft/control level (higher craftsmanship raises melee stats, and same for magic and m.craft, and control for ranged attacks)
EDIT: The machinist could perhaps create beacons/gears that provide effects, i.e. a healing beacon that while active and within range, provides a regen/refresh buff, another beacon that offers a slight protect/shell buff, another that increases physical atk/def. Of course these wouldn't be as potent as BRD/WHM buffs, but would add depth to the class, as well as desirability for parties.
Perhaps also, the Machinist could employ weak turrets, which would provide slight damage to enemies within it's range of sights. Of course, this damage would be considerably weak, but really only useful for taking out many weak enemies (such as the plumes for garuda, if there were a similar battle in 2.0 the Machinist would be a huge asset to this fight).

Into it. In other games like FFIV, Cid was a (guest) playable party member, that went by the class machinist. Give players on that class his Analyze ability, what you're talking, and we might have an alternative way to level crafts which is actually fun.
EDIT: Screw a littler version of Magitek Armor or a Mammet. If players have been promised Magitek Armor, why not directly tie that into Machinist? Another thread on 1st page currently asks "will we be able to use Magitek Missile / etc?" With a machinist class, sure. -

love that idea! ^^ i want some more new and unique classes/jobs. Some stuff FF Tactics and Tactics advanced haven't ever been used in FFXI or FFXIV and most of them are rly cool jobs ^^. I would love to see more of them.

I want mechanist to be in the game, but not under the premise you're designing.
I'm not sure if you realize this, but Mechanist fits a Job more than it fits a class. Unlike "Lancer" which was the name for Final Fantasy Tactic's Dragoon. Mechanist in other Final Fantasy game has had their own characters and mechanics.
When you mention Mechanist I can never get the image of Edgar Figaro with a chainsaw out of my head.

It's sense evolved around guns as a weapon, which is fine by me - and I expect it will become a branch of Musketeer and counter Musketeer's potential job class: Corsair. -

What if the magitek armor were to work as the class's "soul", where Machinist (or class named Engineer) would be able to use abilities named tools much like FFVI, however when equip with a Machinist soul, the use of a magitek armor would become available (along with all of the beacons and whatnot). This wouldn't make Engineer much of a melee class, however perhaps engineer has access to a single turret (or even automaton) before acquiring the soul.Quote:

Torchlight 2 has a machinist class similar in battle to what you're describing, the machinist is a melee character who can spawn heal bots, gun boats, and robotic spider mines while in battle, would love to see little Magitek eal bots and other things running around the battlefield with their survival linked to the craftsmanship of the crafting class.

The Engineer would be a DoH class able to create hi-tech weapons, traps, bombs, and other items all players/classes could utilize in battle. They can also repair all types of gear no matter the type. Also able to repair/customize any upcoming high tech devices coming to Eorzea (Magitek). This class would advance into...
The Machinist would be a unique job that mixes DoH and DoW (craft and battle), where they would be able to make their own unique weapons (aside from traps, bombs, etc) out of common and rare drops from enemies/bosses. Like Red Mage without magic, he/she would be a jack-of-all-trades but with unique AOE support abilities mixed into battle. He/she would also be able to repair everything in the game. He/she could customize his own Magitek armor into something only Machinists could make.
A perfect job for crafting enthusiasts that also want a taste of the action using their forte. Here are a few of his/her tools...
