MMO addiction

Let's be real here. Why else are you subbing to FF14 if you think the game is in a bad state?

Break free. Play better games. Let go of your nostalgia. Stop trying to chase that high when you cleared your first Savage tier for the first time all the way back in Heavensward. You'll never get it again. I've done it years ago*. You can too. You'll never be happy in life if you want to see a capitalist firm satisfy your desire to fall in love with their products once again. Save that for your spouse.

*You all know why these alts are still subbed.

I agree that if you don't have anything to lose then just move on and come back when the game looks better however its not that simple and I think some of what I say falls into being human and not MMO addiction.

To get this out of the way, Square Enix's "We want you to play other games / Take breaks during down time" is more accurately translate to, "We want you to play other games / Take Breaks but don't unsub or we'll burn down your house and those friendships we encourage you to make? Forget about them".

Friends:
There are multiple mechanisms in place to build friendships in the game, be it through Free Companies, Social Venues (RP Cafe's, Clubs, Bars), Communities (Eureka, Deep Dungeons, Gposing), to leave is to neglect/lose at the same time you cannot force people to stay so you are at a situation where you stay and others leave due to content who don't mind tie cutting / maintain friendship out of game or you leave and the same thing. Yes, discord exists, yes other games exist, however "Games we both enjoy that also facilitate the same atmosphere" is not exactly the same. Some are desperately lonely in real life and just cannot make friends there, I know multiple people like this and FF is basically their only social outlet.

Housing:
With such a broken housing system requiring demolition if you do intend to unsubscribe during a content drought then bye bye house since a content drought isn't exactly 6 weeks, so be sure to subscribe at least every 6 weeks to not lose your house. If there was no-lose instanced housing (Like Guild Wars 2 has recently introduced) this wouldn't be an issue.
You are not just dealing with the structure itself but also the location, you're looking at a handful of plots per housing zone that are really premium (and as a result held on to), losing it would mean next to no chance of getting it again.

Coping Mechanism:
I have met multiple people over the years who basically live life through this game, it's not healthy at all to make your first life your character in a MMORPG but we're talking about those with such a raw deal in life be it due to physical, psychological or location that it's their way of living because everything else just sucks, it's the only place they can be close to normal. That's dumbing it down a lot and blanket generalising but I'm not a psychologist and it's a answer point.

No Alternative:
If you were willing to drop your community, friends made (if any), house (if owned), yet still want the same "feel" that FF can give, variety of activities both gameplay and social you don't really have any popular ones at least that come to mind other than pure virtual worlds.

There we go, maybe something in there to think about.

I actually still enjoy the game in earnest after 7 years, thank you very much. I simply don't burn myself out everytime a patch launches and I burn through all content within 10 hours and then be like "man what a patch" until the next content drops.

Personally, I still 'enjoy' this game, but that is more due to the fact I still have friends and connections that play this game quite avidly, that aren't close to having consumed as much content.

If this weren't the case, then I probably wouldn't be subscribed now, and would likely have kept myself unsubbed until 7.35. Even questioning whether to resub at all for that matter.. Achievement hunting in the past has generally been OK with me as an outlet of content between patches, but at this point it's nearing 3 years since the game has had long-term casual/midcore content with some sense of progression with it. On top of the simple fact that hunting achievements has made me realize how badly designed some aspects of this game actually are.

I am inclined to agree with you otherwise though, chasing that high is just pointless... Not even speaking about raids (As I am not aptly qualified to do so) but generally speaking the game just doesn't have that same factor... Whether it's large-scale content, or whether it's crafting content like Ishgard/Cosmic Exploration... Let's face it on that front, between the two, they are largely only going to be reskins of what came before, with the same foundational systems, and even then at the core root of the game, it's still going to be the same recycled systems.

Like, I am sorry but we are etching on to 12 years of the same FATEs, the same hunts (Ohh wow, we got SS Ranks at random), the same master recipe structure. Then nearing onto a decade since HW, where we are still relying solely exclusively on the scrip system (Much wow, they separated it into Rarefieds), and folklore systems... Sooner or later it will be a decade where we're crawling on the same root structure for large scale content, and the same root structure expert recipes.

It's all well and good that dungeons being a step up from what they once were, but I feel like with some of the feedback presented, they are taking the feedback too literally and not actually looking at the 'spirit' of this feedback... Or we wouldn't be in a situation where they think frontloading raid content and backloading all other forms of substantive content otherwise, e.g., large-scale is still a good idea. It's a constant yo-yo identity crisis that the game is having where it doesn't actually know what it wants to be.

I suppose the long story short, is that yes, I agree with you. Chasing that high just ain't happening.

I can almost guarantee you that every single person who posts on this forum, did so because they had a complaint to make. This forum does not build a positive response from a base of players, it generates eternal victims and pessimists. That's not to say that there aren't good people here, but this forum is not the reason for it. You get out what you put into something and people can feel it on the other side.

I mean, as far as I know, you can't get a refund for the remainder of an active sub, so I’m just hanging around on the forums when I’m bored.

To be honest, I’m not even playing anymore - I didn’t touch anything in 7.1. The next time I log in will probably just be to dismantle my house.

I think it's more like sunk cost than addiction.

People don't want to lose/let go of all the things they worked for over the years. We're basically where WoW was in BFA except XIV has the additional leverage of housing to keep people subbed.

It’s 2024, a lot of people don’t want friends anymore. They just hop around between different flavors-of-the-month games and the going cope is “just hit the bar if you want friends lol”. And they want to drag everyone else down with this vain cope. More and more I hear the line of “MMOs are dead, multiplayer games are dead” in FFXIV spaces. It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy. It definitely isn't the players that are crashing the game.

I think for a lot of disgruntled players, it's less addiction (what is there to even log in and do?) and more sunk-cost feelings brought on by the housing demolition system. Although, I hear autodemo is turned off nowadays, due to the hurricane disaster in NA.
That being said, if you log in and have no purpose behind doing so, and then just idle in your yard running in circles without doing anything while several hours pass like some people I've known (self included, but I stopped doing this) then yeah you might actually be addicted in a weird way to a game with an absolute trickle of content. Sometimes there really is just a bizarre soothing element to logging in and relaxing in game, even if you're not doing anything. I had to make the conscious effort to just log off when I caught myself standing around doing nothing. Once I began doing that, it started to get harder to even justify logging on in general. At this point, the three factors keeping me subbed are the people I've met who still haven't quit (I want to say only a few of them remain at this point), my house, and the simple fact that reinstalling this game is confusing as hell and I wouldn't even remember where to begin.

Am I the only one who thinks that people complain about FFXIV so frequently precisely because they care a lot about it? People don’t generally dedicate their time to thinking about things they straight up do not care about.

Every person who makes a complaint does so because they want something they care about to improve. I mean, isn’t that the whole point of complaining? To hope it might instigate change or convince others to do the same?

Personally I wouldn’t class blatantly malicious or otherwise ‘invalid’ / ‘misleading’ / ‘troll’ or whatever else people do these days to stir up internet drama as being the same as a ‘genuine complaint’.

I.E
‘This game is trash and it’s probably going in the ground where it belongs and I’ll dance on its grave if it ever does’ - not a ‘genuine’ complaint because it’s just trying to be incendiary and doesn’t really seem like they care what happens
‘This game is dying and it’s because of ‘X’ content it needs this, this and a little bit of this!’

If the mobile version of FFXIV ends up with those kinds of monetization practices, I highly doubt compassion will be on anyone’s mind.

Even less so if the mobile game starts generating more revenue than the retail version.

Those things might make you angry and anger can be motivating but not sustainable. Eventually anger drains you and all that you are left with is not caring anymore.

I was definitely addicted to FFXI, but not XIV; it's too casual (which I love now). I remember when I played XI I had a ton of friends and the game was very social. I never got that same feeling with 14 and instead have had just a very small circle of friends. Now its just me and one other close friend who joined an FC that has very nice people in it. Idk why I find it so much harder to make friends in this game. Is it cuz im older? who knows lol.

The game might have some flaws, but the people themselves have changed far more than the game has. People have been drifting into isolation and sociopathy since the pandemic. They intentionally seek out games that don’t have other players. And in times like these, people need to be cattle-prodded into engaging in a multiplayer environment. The shutdown of DC travel didn’t help, but DC travel didn’t exist for most of the game’s history. Every other problem—raiding on Aether, FCs turned into sub farms, no one wanting to play the game, an over-reliance on plugins instead of gameplay—is 100% created by the players. They did this, not Square Enix. People have become weak and have no soul or personality besides consuming the latest slop and being shepherded around by billion-dollar corporations. And if a company doesn’t try to control them, they’ll leave for one that does (e.g. moving from XIV to WoW). It’s cattle mentality. FFXIV can only be saved by a deliberate community.

That I think the game is in bad state/going in a bad direction doesnt make me automatically not enjoy it

I still enjoy hanging out with friends
I still enjoy messing around with my house
I still enjoy doing random content trough roulettes
I still enjoy slowly raising my ilvl and doing extremes, savage or (miserably attempting) ults
So, yeah, I still enjoy what a lot of the game has to offer

But I will continue to speak about how the game is in a bad state to put pressure in SE, because we all know, they can do better. If we all were to say "the game is still alright" instead of voicing discontent, we would be getting a patch every 6 months, no collabs, no side quest chain, maybe even less trials and dungeons... all untill players start voicing discontent and anger. So before we get there, we are voicing it now as things slooooowly head into that general direction.

Also when they say "take a break and play other games" its usually because they want you to play other SE game. The lastest Live letter had the fantashon videogame ads sprinkled all over it. No thanks, im not playing a product of yours if the current one im paying for is declining in quality.

Alright, let’s get a little philosophical about this.

Compassion, when it’s not deserved or given despite obvious problems being ignored (like CBU3 with FFXIV), just ends up enabling bad habits. For FFXIV, that means oversimplified gameplay, reused assets, and content that feels half-baked.

And that’s why people complain—because they care. But here’s the thing: people only complain for so long before they stop caring and just leave.

Compassion should only go to someone who’s actually trying to do better. Look at Hello Games with No Man’s Sky or CDPR with Cyberpunk 2077 v2.0. They put in the work, turned things around, and earned back goodwill. That’s the kind of effort that deserves compassion.

CBU3? Not so much right now. If they actually worked on things the community has been asking for forever—like Viera and Hrothgar hats, a proper glamour log, or instanced housing—people would probably be a lot more forgiving. At least then it’d feel like they’re listening.

But instead, we’re getting half-finished systems, mediocre writing, and gameplay that keeps getting dumbed down. Compassion shouldn’t be an excuse for letting them get away with that.

Do you think CS3 is still coasting on the goodwill of A Realm Reborn's launch? I think they are, atleast a little. During the Rising, they always say they want to continue to innovate and make an enjoyable world for the players, but it feels much less genuine recently. I know it takes effort to start a new multi-expansion storyline after the ten years leading to Endwalker, but the slow release period for major updates is causing me increased concern, especially given the lack of midcore content. It has begun to feel as though behind the scenes they're not taking Quality Assurance checks despite the increased time between updates and I as a player have become continually unimpressed.

I am playing other games now, CS3. I'm not doing it because Yoshida recommended it, but because there is nothing engaging for me now. CS3 NEEDS to innovate if they want to retain players and a community. This is the biggest danger. This could be a one-off bad update situation, but only if they listen to the playerbase, like they say they do.

Among newer players, definitely. They often read the context on wikipedia or watch the Noclip documentary and so they start fresh with that context, whereas older players may have had time to let that wear off.

It doesn't feel like it's not genuine. It's more like they are just flat out slow at certain things and don't necessarily define these things the same as everyone else does ie. an enjoyable world would mean more instances, not changes to the open world.

Their response to that has consistently been that we'll get it "soon" ie. in the 7.2x patch. People may not like that it takes until then, but they have been consistent in saying it (not to mention it was predictable due to their formula).

You are aware they have over 100 QA testers according to their credits (and I've seen them recruiting even more) and that they spend those months squashing bugs from thousands down to a few hundred or less? And the ones that remain of note are listed in "Known Issues" at the bottom of the patch notes. This was all explained in one of their development panels - it's not as if I'm making it up.

It's not because you're older. People of all ages make lots of friends in this game. At the end of the day, you either know how to make friends in this game or you don't - age has nothing to do with it.

In a way, yes.

This is just my personal take, so take it with a grain of salt.

I think the most goodwill came during Shadowbringers when FFXIV’s popularity exploded during the WoW exodus. That’s when the NoClip documentary gained traction, and content creators were praising the game to the skies. It felt like FFXIV was everywhere, with both big and small creators talking about it. With the track record of FFXIV’s earlier expansions and Shadowbringers’ quality, the dev team and direction looked incredibly promising. People bought in—and honestly, I think they were right to.

Then came Endwalker. While it was financially successful, it was also divisive and burned through some of that goodwill. The lackluster patches that followed only made it worse.

Now we’re at Dawntrail. Again, it’s financially successful, but it’s burned even more goodwill. At this point, I think most of it is gone. Sure, people will check out new expansions and return for patches, but unless CBU3 makes some big changes, the player numbers are likely to keep declining.

If you look at the SteamDB stats (which is really the only accessible source for tracking player activity), the player count is more or less the same as it was four years ago.

It seems like SE might have found a “happy medium,” where they can toss out mediocre expansions, churn through what’s left of the player base, and rely on that core group to sustain their income. Eventually, they could shift to maintenance mode with minimal updates while keeping the online store alive.

Before that documentary, a lot of us had goodwill already, just because we ourselves knew the history anyway. The game had just been remade and the answers trailer played upon launching the game as a constant reminder of that, and from my perspective in ARR, every story patch was better than the last and that continued right up through Stormblood, culminating in Shadowbringers, where it hit diminishing returns.

From there, the sort of dungeons we get like Ghimlyt and Holminster Switch with garleans parachuting and villagers fleeing is just the norm and continues to be. It's amazing, don't get me wrong, but it hit a point where it's hard to particularly say the next dungeon with events happening in the background and top tier fantasy music is a big improvement. But I'd like to believe it's just due to diminishing returns.

I think the Noclip documentary was just useful for teaching newer players about the history and giving them the same feelings towards the developers that I had in ARR.

I complain about this game because I'm compassionate about it. Acting like everything is fine and cool or ignoring the state of the game when there is glaring problems and a noticable drop in quality is not compassion, it's what kills games.
If I wasn't compassionate about this game and didn't want it to be better I would just ignore it and move on.

Yeah, I should’ve clarified that I was talking about newer players who didn’t experience the journey the old guard went through, but -> ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve had a similar experience, though, as I slowly made my way through the game. The story and world kept growing on me as I progressed through the expansions, culminating in ShB. I started playing around 5.1 or 5.2 (can’t remember exactly), but I took my time with everything and ended up catching up close to or right during the WoW exodus. Diamond Weapon was actually the first EX I farmed. Good times, lol.

The NoClip documentary made me appreciate FFXIV even more.

Then EW happened, and honestly, it just frustrated me with how they handled the story. The silver lining, though, is that it pushed me into a new hobby: writing stories and creating my own worlds. It’s a steep learning curve, but it’s super satisfying to figure out concepts, religions, societies, and how they all interact.

So... yay?

On the downside, the more time I spend writing, the more I notice some of the asspullery (or retconning?) writers use to justify new MacGuffins, plot armor, or other nonsense in stories, lol.

So perhaps the reason Square-Enix is in no rush to steer Final Fantasy 14 away from the rocks is because they know already that they can crash into them full steam ahead and as long as there's enough people to keep the lights on, they're perfectly content with however many people drop off and never come back. Honestly, I think the future of FFXIV will hinge on how well the mobile version performs. The potential install base for the mobile version is several times larger than PC and console combined. If it takes off, Square Enix could easily shift focus, rehash HW - DT, and sell them all over again, letting the retail version limp along until the mobile version catches up.

And then, who knows? People are often more willing to spend smaller amounts on store items in mobile games. I speak from personal experience.

If they market it right, it could end up with something akin to Genshin Impact but with a mandatory monthly fee on top.

Bruh, it just hit me.

Trusts would be absolutely perfect for gacha pulls. Think about it - different, limited-edition characters, some with boosted damage or utility, incentivizing meta units so you can clear everything solo without ever needing other players.

Kudos, Square Enix. Truly, kudos.

I enjoy the game.

Give me your things when you "break free" or whatever.

Another thing to consider is that XIV mobile could be built from the ground up without the legacy code from 1.0. That would essentially make it FFXIV v̶2̶.̶0̶ v.3.0, which could make implementing new systems and features much easier in comparison.

Well, the only thing we can do is sit back, grab a drink and see what'll happen.

If you are still begging for others things after playing for 10 years maybe play the actual game rather than begging for peoples things on the forums

I've played this game for around 9430 hours now (over 7 years, I wasn't around for Heavensward til late Stormblood). I don't think I can call it addiction. I just sub when I need to and unsub when I need to (like right now I have an upcoming stretch of time where I won't be around my computer, so instant unsub for a month). As for what I still do in game, goal wise quite a lot. I'm still slugging through Eureka and Bozja to complete weapons. Trying my hand at getting to the end of PotD solo (then HoH). Still have the coming savage tiers to do with my savage static and still working on clearing my first ult with my ult static. Lots of smaller misc. goals too.

The only complaint I have right now is maybe they could have shuffled the patch cycles to push some content up, but it's not doomer or negative. So many people are still suffering from Endwalker's content drought that I think they've turned extremely bitter and non-constructive.

Honestly though, as much as I do play FF14 (I think I do play it a lot?), it's not my be-all-end-all of life. I have so many other games I still play in various levels of activity, along with other hobbies.

Take breaks and play other games.................lose your house, limited time fomo events that either never come back or end up on the mog station, gearing lockouts, beast tribe lockouts, retainers stop selling anything you had up the second your sub runs out, etc.

Just definitely don't unsub. Or make it easy and pay your sub a year or six months in advance!

I do that myself where my 6 month sub starts, I buy the Crysta (19,294) to have ready to pay for my 6 month sub renewal again without worrying about it. It's the closest I have to sub for a year :3
