Lightspeed is making it.
Seems to be 2.x with recent improvements (added Golden Saucer minigames over the years, flying mounts).
No details about monetization.
Is this where our sub money has gone? To remake the game on mobile starting from ARR again?
Maybe they've realised they've ran out of road with how garbage Dawntrail is and they just want to try and milk the original decade all over again. I'm joking but... Also... Am I?
There's 0 way this will be subscription based on mobile, so you can expect 100% expect aggressive, Genshin lootboxes in that one.
Very curious about the housing implementation though, ngl.
Playerbase: "can we have content pls"
SE: "You guys HAVE phones, right??"
I highly doubt it's going to be the same version of the game as on PC and Consoles... Even if they've been simplifying the game, it's still probably a little too complex for a phone UI.
Man that's weird. I am genuinely curious as to how they'll monetise this.
It's a totally different game made by Tencent using FFXIV's assets. It'll just be another SE cash grab.
I wonder if they will tie this in to the game somehow, like with the companion app giving the tomestone emote
Either way it's still a weird choice, I have no clue what they intend on doing with this but I don't really play a lot of mobile games
I thought this was a joke or Ai generated video but the channel the video is on is IGN. Well... there's no doubt that Yoshi P is making SE a lot of money. They seem to be very happy with his decision-making and the massive fortune they will recieve through microtransactions of the masses.
Please look forward to it!
On the optimistic side, maybe the mobile game will be the new cash cow that funds other games content (FFXIV mainline title)?
On the pessimistic side, XIV's patch content and feedback will continue to be implemented as little crumbs here and there.
Games not doing well > Make mobile game > Cash off all the whales and micro transactions.
Can't say I'm surprised glad my sub is ending here soon.
Great. It's Lightspeed.
:vomit:
Square, when we say invest more back into XIV, this isn't what we mean.
I know they want to get more non-MMO players to play the game but I think I would have preferred an offline ARR-Endwalker standalone (with the choice of old graphics lmao) game instead.

Bet they find a way to cram NFTs in there somehow.
The development for this was leaked back in July. Honestly not surprised.
The XI mobile version was canceled but this was approved? Okay whatever.
I'm OK with this, looks like SE has decided to reverse Chinese Gold Farming. Launching first in China and all. Lol
....a mobile version of the game? With THIS many buttons on each class? And we thought PS3 Limitations were bad, my god.
Get your Credit cards ready to refill your "Trial Battle Stamina"!
It doesn't sound like it connects to the existing game and that's the thing I'm interested in. I don't want to start a new character in an inferior mobile version.
Would be cool to play FFXIV on my iPad when I travel as a DJ. Since my Denon Prime DJ controller already doesn't need a laptop, I can pack lighterz and just use my iPad as a hub. It connects to everything I do on my MacBook pro anyway. Will be nice not to have to always bring my laptop.
Hopefully it will have controller support. I can see the potential of tablets with mobile networks, and this so easily. Will be fantastic if the effort is put to make this game work well on these devices. It definitely would benefit my life. FFXIV Is my comfort game.
....Why? Who looks at a game as busy as XIV and thinks they want to play it on a tiny screen? I don't think this is the best move to play after the controversy DT has caused.
You know what would be funny? I mean really funny? If the mobile version had unrestricted glamour and it made people put more pressure on the devs to do the same in standard game.
time for that one button-rotation people are wishing for. or at least those half baked npc rotations
SE itself isn't developing it, Lightspeed is, none of our money is realistically going into this version.
Speaking from experience working in the industry, more than likely Lightspeed sees opportunity to get some major $$$ off a mobile version of FF14, they approached Square for licensing deal, Square approved it, now Square either got paid a handsome sum for the deal, or they'll collect some royalties the mobile port makes. Or both. Either way, Square is/just made a ton of money for doing basically zero work. From the time I worked at Ubisoft, we had plenty of mobile game studios pitching mobile game ideas that involved some of Ubisoft's bigger IPs for licensing deals.
Either way, this is effectively entirely disconnected from actual FF14 in any development sense. If anything, it might even benefit FF14's development, if Lightspeed adds features/QoL that become extremely popular that could be translated to the main game, putting pressure on the main devs to implement them.
At least we get 5% of the revenue on a game that is not an NFT
Huh. Do you not have phones, though?
I saw this on the lodestone and couldn't believe it wasn't April Fools day. I am all for the companion app to make playing the game work for busy people, but I'm not sure about playing the whole game on a mobile - why give yourself neck strain looking down doing hundreds of hours of MSQ on a mobile when you could just load it up on a PS5 or a PC and look properly at a screen?
Mobile games are usually played to pass the time quickly, for example while waiting in a waiting room, on a bus or train or on the toilet. So a quicker game like pac-man is ideal, or not a game at all. When I have been without access to a PC, I actually just watch FFXIV on youtube or twitch via a mobile device, which would probably be an easier way to consume the MSQ on such a device.
There was a time I was very sick though and I streamed the game to my iPad (yes this is has been possible for a long time). It was the only way I could play because a lot of my muscles were injured and needed to be rested flat to heal. I could have probably got away with doing a dungeon (but would have got strange looks due to my movements), but it was more ideal for just doing quests, so I just did those and that was comfortable. Still, there's a difference between this and saying you should fight titan with 7 other players on a mobile/tablet.
And now most people wouldn't need to stream it like I did because of Steamdecks. People can do savage with those. I think those are useful when stuck at, say, a hotel but wanting to login for raiding on time.
But it still remains that aside from being stuck traveling, in a hotel or seriously injured like I was, why wouldn't you just do hundreds of hours of MSQ on a PC or console?
The graphics look a little better than the actual ARR does. It also says you can choose to meet players, mentors, etc. Does this mean they are actually going to play amongst everyone else on other platforms?
Is this an out of season April Fool's Joke?
Sorry had to say it, moving on. Seriously? I would love to know who thought this was a great idea and how integrated or segregated from the actual game it will be.
Just because Lightspeed is developing the game, doesn't mean SE isn't feeding them our sub money to support their development. Yes, this is definitely where our sub money goes.
What a waste of resources.
Do you think Yoshi P will fix job identity in mobile game before 8.0?
What will we have to pull for in this game, characters or weapons or both?
They already stated back during the initial tease this would be its own thing separate from the main game...though I'd be surprised if they didn't have some level of connectivity to act as a carrot on a stick to the people playing XIV on PC.
Either way a stripped-down version of XIV that will likely be subject to usual gacha/mobile gimmicks fundamentally doesn't sound appealing to me.
This will probably be a hit in Japan, especially if they use Gatcha mechanics somehow (for Trusts?)
I don't think it will do as well in the US unless you can pull SSS rank Y'Shtola in a bikini.
