Damn what a year for FFXIV
Knowing Blizzard, this feature is either going to become the sole reason that people play the game, or a novelty that is looked at once and never touched again
I want it to be absolutely awesome and available for everyone without keeping the threat of demolition if you take a break. Not because I'll play WoW, but simply because SE have to stop BSing the playerbase with talk of data transfer and storage and all this malarky. It's the insanity that is the glamour system taken to a new level.
High chance it'll be better than ours, :/
Chance they'll bork it up if course but given their record I feel it is a safe bet they'll grant it gameplay, and it'll be for everyone. I hope does so well that SE has to look in the mirror. Other MMOs also have better systems but usually don't stand near FFXIV in comparison for other reasons, only thing I feel SE's does well for housing is the objects /look/ great.
Hopefully the systems they added recently are a sign they're trying to fix it (interior controls could be that).
That year being 2026 OP?
With Microsoft taking over and their deep pockets, the WoW team has received a lot of cash infusions along with the removal of corporate interference in the game.
I am watching what is going on over there with curiosity.
More information is required to determine whenever that is a proper housing the players receive, or just a repacked garrison system.
For now, it does feel a bit like a 'Break glass in case of critical player trust' - moment.
A lot of the higher ups that only care about money are still there even after the buyout. Recent patches have been rushed out as awful buggy messes and the cash shop is just as bad as FF14's.
Very much so. Blizzard's been so stingy with giving out cosmetics in WoW and OW2 lately and much rather sell them for real life money, they'll definitely monetize the hell out of housing.
Difference : Yoshi P - "We need to go on the attack" actual quote from an interview when he said they had like 3 other titles on the make= Focus on multiple titles, dividing budget and staff, making for 5 month patches with minimal repeat content.
Blizz: "We need to go on the attack = Focus on WoW with a clear roadmap, teasing new features.
I reckon its staff, budget and bad direction / corpo meddling which includes Yoshi P
Ffxiv has a cash shop for housing items, dyes, mounts, glams, orchestrions, emotes, HOUSING ITEMs, level and story skips, retainer skips, 5 euro inventory space addition + extra return point and remote marketboard albeit limited to kupo nuts. Dont remember if you can buy those for cash too.

It's not just housing that's coming to WoW. Blizzard is also launching a completely new game and judging by the trailer, it's actually pretty good. The new game is called Avowed. And my first thought was, I'm totally in.
Oops. Doublepost. The main argument probably will be "Well thats WoW, different game, go play that and unsub if youre unhappy"
People forget when they made ARR they looked at WoW and other competitors. He even made the devs play WoW. You look at what your competition does at all times, put your own twist on things and INNOVATE. Hell sometimes you even straight up steal content and make it better.
Good for them.
It's been requested for quite a while now, AFAIK.
I think it's more to do with physical limitations than the code. They have all these separate physical machines in racks, as opposed to scalable cloud servers that would probably make it simpler to let them communicate and scale based on need. Instead, they are handling that themselves and all the headaches that come with it. Like how they were making real life models in 1.0 to import into the game while everyone else was using a modeling program on a computer, it makes things needlessly complicated.
I'm not convinced code is a good reason not to do something, but with how they shot down a bunch of UI ideas in the past before implementing them, I feel there may be perceptions that exist of what's impossible that aren't reflected by reality.
The developers themselves brought it up and they actually had a lot of the same issues as FFXIV, according to them.
I remember watching something where they had made personal loot so ingrained that they could no longer go back and they wanted to reverse it, but it was taking a lot of time due to - that's right - spaghetti code. Then I remember seeing a lot of talk of issues that FFXIV also has, like limitations on various things that are challenging to work around.
WoW even has a similar issue adjusting gear for all the races and I think they are using AI for it, while SE demonstrated in a dev panel an automated system of their own but didn't mention if AI was behind it or not.
I haven't played since MoP, but even back then there were discussions about WoW's dated engine. It was build upon a modified version of Warcraft 3's engine and there are many things that are extremely difficult, if not impossible to change since they're so hard-coded into the engine. The reason why there's never been a WoW2 is that WoW was never in such an abominable state that FF14's 1.0 was (although they did have another MMORPG in development for a while before canning it).
Some people seem to think that everything in FF14 is the way it is due to engine limitations, when actually some of it has to do with whether or not the developers want to add or change something, especially if they do not think it would help them financially.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this being developed by Obsidian?
Don't care about housing but I hope for the sake of others that it will not be Garrison 2.0 but I think they learnt from that mistake.
But considering WoW already pretty much does everything better than FFXIV I wouldn't be surprised if its better. Maybe it will actually let you also transmog inside the house unlike FFXIV LMAO
And anyone coping that FFXIV housing is such a mess because of the engine is delusional. WoW engine is based on a 20-year old code and gets updated each expansion. Sqenix is just lazy.
Excuse me, I believe it's called spaghettification of the source code that has caused the FFXIV devs additional headaches. None of the original WoW devs liked eating spaghetti, so they made sure to keep it out of their coding activities.
Wait... WoW is doing housing??
does everything...better?
maybe you might want to check out some of there other.. "features" such as losing ENTIRE guild bank contents. some guilds going all the way back to the beginning... lost.. everything. some got stuff back.. some didnt. yeah... great game. great company. their releases are usually bug ridden messes, back when I still played you didnt plan on playing the first week of a release, simply because it was usually unplayable. I wouldnt say that its better over there by any stretch of the imagination.
Guild Wars 2 released housing this year and it basically became the center of the whole game, it's actually a dangerous path to go down if your game is already suffering from content problems. To me this seems like a last ditch effort to squeeze a couple more months or micro transactions out of people, at least in 14 it was an integral part dating way back.
Would be nice if it actually inspired XIV to create an instanced housing system, so that all players could have a house regardless of what server they play on. No need to scrap the existing neighborhoods, just add something else for those that are either left out due to poor luck in the lotto, or just want more spaces to decorate. Because only the interiors are instanced, and the wards themselves have to be permanently loaded, it’s not really cost effective to just throw out new wards all the time.
Too soon to tell exactly what all WOW’s housing is going to include, but I would love to have a similar system to ESO, just for the sheer variety in sizes and styles of housing. There’s so many possibilities of places in Eorzea that could be used for home styles, especially in the new zones… without going into spoilers, big tents, domes, new styles of houses… Or from previous expansions, think of a townhouse in Ishgard, a bio dome on the moon, a cave like a certain sorceress has, an oversized hippo cart/caravan or a cabin somewhere in Dravania. So many gorgeous places in this game world we could call home!
And yes, ESO’s does have some of their stuff in the cash shop, but a lot of it is free or purchased with in-game currency, plus they don’t require a sub either. For a game like XIV where we are paying a sub every month, most options could be free and then they could put the super large spaces on Mogstation for a one-time fee.
I really think they need to take a hard look at what keeps the largest chunk of the player base logging in daily even when the content for a given patch runs out… their characters, glam and housing. All of these need some real TLC right now. Recent updates are a step in the right direction, but it’s baby steps and some changes (especially character updates) have been problematic.
Personally, the ideal housing system i imagine is a mixture between ESO, LOTRO, Wildstar and FFXIV.
The idea of neighborhood isn't bad..but barely works. The lack of features accessible from the house makes it less interesting and in the end is just like glam/transmog system for buildings (with some custom minigames here and there thanks to our passionate community). The lottery system "solves" a problem they shouldn't have if the feature was better implemented... and we still have that weird demolition system.
FFXIV housing system feels more like The Sims 2 (from PS2) than an actual housing system built for a MMORPG (as an immersive experience).
How i would make it:
1 - Lavender Beds, Goblets, etc..should be made EXCLUSIVE FOR FREE COMPANIES AND THEIR ALLIES ONLY. They would be way more expensive and less available. Rooms should be physical and not just another instanced room, exactly like a mansion. Shared content should be created.
2 - Players could have: 1) their apartments and 2) house in open-world districts. Every map next to a capital should have such districts. Imagine you teleport to Benchbranch Meadows, use your mount and move to a place where your house and other houses is. Layers system could make it possible. You see people traveling across the same region, etc...the idea is making the world more alive and immersive, better yet, imagine such system in II Mheg. Occasionally they could spawn fates from higher levels next to your district and even create a system where enemies (from the void, other factions, thing like that) tries to destroy your district (better than a weird virtual demolition system, at least you could defend yourself or someone else could help you).
Each district could have a place with exclusive buffs. Such buffs could be made available by: cooking specific ingredients, voting, etc. Giving some identity to each place "if you like crafting more than combat, buy a plot in X district of Sea of Clouds".
Nowadays, people spend more time AFK in Ul'dah, Limsa, D9....than inside their own houses.
Cool cherry picks that have nothing to do with actual game mechanics, its almost like bugs dont happen in other games and afaik the guild wipe was a result of backend updates.
Or are we going to forget FFXIV bugs like RMT stealing ur gil by forcing u to buy their items off of the MB if u were standing too close?
Leve abuse and bugs?
ID item swapping?
All the out of bound glitches? U could literally see Alexander before he spawns into the map.
Dungeon progression items falling through the floors?
Bosses having their phases bugged forever, i.e Twintania?
When fishing would crash the whole game servers?
When glam dressers would crash whole game servers?
Yeah buddy FFXIV is a completely bug free game and never has had any issues ever.
This is just another boon for WoW, which has so much going for it right now, esp when you compare it to FFXIV. As a FFXIV vet who recently decided to finally give WoW a shot due to over a full year now and mediocre FFXIV "content" and "design", it is by far currently the better of the 2 in so many ways, from battle content, class design, higher cutscenes quality, events to even general gameplay. Even the general playerbase, from my experience, has become much more friendly and inviting than here in XIV. The lack of housing was one of the few things I thought XIV had over WoW, but I guess that problem is going to be solved. And if they make it well designed with more freedom in building and instanced it's going to have that over XIV as well.
from what was shown at the 30th anniversary over the past think day or 2, it has been teased that they are finally pulling the trigger on housing for their next expansion Midnight. probably won't get further details til summer to fall of 2025. we'll see how they pull this off and see if it will be a hot buggy mess or will run smooth given their track record. putting my bets on being miles ahead of 14's housing with all things considered. looking forward to seeing how this all turns out when we get more info on it next year i hope
pretty sure I never said that FFXIV is bug free nor would Ii ever say it was bug free lol. feel free to show me where I did. all I did was question your questionable call that WoW does "pretty much everything better".
as for 'cherry picking' it was a fairly major RECENT issue. the grass isnt greener there, its just a different yard.
