Please Fix Portraits

Portraits were such an amazing addition to the game, but goddamn, they break if you even BREATHE on them. It's been over a year and now even DT released and absolutely nothing has been done up until this point, and I'm starting to feel like nothing will be done either. So many times it feels like I have to update a gear set and then still have to go to portraits and update them separately too.

I just don't understand why they have to default back to a driver's license photo when anything doesn't match?? I clearly recognizes that there is a portrait associated with your set if it's going to give the message "This doesn't match, reverting to default", but why revert AT ALL?? It drives me insane...

I think when it was first introduced it was good...then they botched it.
Extracted materia? Well, your portrait is broken now.
Hid your helmet? Your portrait is broken now...

yeah...exciting concept, but I still get the god damn mugshot instead of the portait I spent time working on...
Then I load into a duty and everyone got mugshots...why even interact with this system

I’d have prerered if the Portrait system/Adventure Plate was an actual .png/.jpeg image.
It could have been done within the Gpose, store at maximum of X shots (saved into a folder in your computer/console like it was a .dat file) and accessible from a separate window in the game.

You take the photo, save it as Portait, go into your Portraits/Adventurer Plate Editor, load the photo. Done.
It also would have added more variety to each shot and it’s have gave more creativity to the players…

They'd have to be careful in that scenario, as we saw how... shall we say 'creative' some players can be with their portrait pictures, and surely being able to upload from folders on PCs would open up the use of modded (from the likes of Mare) images?

Square Enix could mitigate some problems with making the picture in your adventurer plate the "fallback" when your Portrait breaks for one of those needless reasons again. Or give a prompt when changing a saved outfit that allows you to update your portrait with one click...

Yep. I remember preferring the "beta" and being thoroughly disappointed with the current implementation.
It should just default to your adventurer plate portrait no matter what your job is when your portrait is "broken". No one is gonna freak out about someone's portrait being a summoner when they queued in as tank.

Portraits should work like they used to before and they should automatically adjust to the gear equipped.

Tying portraits to gearsets has the annoying effect of having to "save" those you've made but don't want to use right now into other random sets. We should just be able to have a specific maximum amount of portraits (let's say 50), and then link those to gearsets.

No that's different. The issue is, touching materia / accessories / any armor requires a reset. It's really annoying and poorly implemented. The adventurer plate is one and done. It never needs to be updated regardless of gear switching. Just apply that same thing to portraits. Give us one for each class, make it so you save it once and it is done / works even if you change your gear.

Alternatively, have the portraits auto-update based on any changes instead of it needing to be done manually.

The only thing that I have seen that makes a portrait "unacceptable" is posing. You can only change posing within the portrait interface. So why the heck are all these things I change outside of the portrait interface making it unacceptable?

2. Use the previous one that was "acceptable"

The silly thing is that it requires a certain percentage of your character's face to be visible, so any kind of pose with a weapon can become invalid if the replacement weapon is big enough to cross the threshold.

Correct. Changing gear can potentially change a not lewd portrait to a lewd one so you have to re-save things every time. A few terminally horny bad apples spoiled the system for everyone as is so often the case.

I thought about changing my characters gear when I was logged out of the game and my portrait broke. :(

I've never seen it change just because of the weapon. It seems to always just be assuming you have the biggest weapon possible and considers it blocked even though it's obviously isn't. But its just bad in general. In certain poses where you face cannot be seen and it's fine. Do you have an example that is easily available?

Just let people have their butt shots and cover their faces if they want. It's not like they really care.

Not on hand, I just remember a post from someone where they switched one gunblade to a slightly larger one(I think two steps of the ShB relic) and it broke their portrait.

I have gotten used to needing to make sure I update my portrait every time I swap a piece of gear, but sometimes this doesn't even work and I'm back at Default. Then I have to remove a piece of gear, update portrait. Then put the piece back on, and update portrait to fix it.

I wonder why we can't just freeze a portrait as whatever we were wearing at the time, or have it auto-update if it really needs to be current.

Except it doesn't. It does not check for what gear you are wearing. The only thing it seems to check as far as an acceptable portrait is position and the only reasons I've seen it give are your character is not in frame and your expression isn't in frame, and that is weirdly inconsistent.

You can be fully clothed with your butt to the camera and it's fine. You change into 2b leggings and it won't show, but you go into portraits and all you have to do is save and it works. It's perfectly fine with your butt being right there.

It's not enforcing any standard of "decency". It's just annoying people who make a slight change.

Something new I just saw with glamours and portraits: I use the same plate for all tanks (because there are not enough plates) but obviously can't use the same weapon. If I wanted to change the weapon for one tank I'd put it in the plate and the others would get a warning but it wouldn't affect to portrait. Now I Had a warrior axe in the plate and I switch to paladin and the portrait is showing the sword unglamoured though it is. But it won't save it because it doesn't match. Just look at the weapon and use what is there, it really doesn't matter if it's different. I'd rather my preferred weapon show, but More I'd rather the feature work instead it being my responsibility to figure out how to make it work.

Still say that portraits should work like the adventurer plate. It doesn't matter what your current outfit looks like, it only shows what you were wearing when you "took the picture"

Usually I have to make sure the gear set is saved and alright, then go in and save the portrait. And then sacrifice two goats... :D

But seriously most things that make the portrait not work are not things that make the portrait unacceptable. You can usually just go in and save.

What always confuses me is when my gear set is updated. The gear matches what is in the portrait. The "save" button is greyed out meaning there is nothing to update, and the portrait is listed as "on."

Then I go into a duty and.... BLEH! Default!

I love the Portraits feature and they seem popular with the players, but they sure made them irritating as possible to deal with.

I haven't seen melding/extracting or repairing gear break them, but toggling headgear/visors/weapons does appear to. The main cause of them breaking were the shared glamours; if one gear set was updated, the other jobs in that role had to be as well, even though they don't have the error symbol in the portrait menu.

The suggestions here are good, but in the meantime, you'll have to continue indulging that thousand-yard stare. And the fact that crafters and gatherers can't use them for anything.

I honestly don't know why we don't have a "Use Adventurer Plate portrait" feature.

We can already have a working portrait in our Adventurer Plate that doesn't match what we're currently wearing, so why not use that tech? I just want an universal portrait that is not the default mugshot.

That's why I never update the portrait. It's useless everytime it resets. And I change glamour a lot so it's always fucked up.

A feature that was cool to play with for 15 minutes and then realize it's not worth my time because of the hassle. Aggravating.
