what is the point of yellow materia?

I've never seen it used in the last three addons. I know it can be transformed into something useful in the black brush station, but the main point of materia is supposedly to be inserted into items. Why not make tenacity and piety stats more useful, there will be less competition for materia with dd.

They could make tank healing scale off of tenacity instead of strength, but I don't know what they could do to make piety appealing.

Piety and tenacity may be niche for ultimates. MP regen was at some points required a bit, in the past more so. As you ran out of MP if you healed not efficiently yet.

But the whole stat system is largely not really interesting indeed. They basically abandoned it with the early steps of ARR and now it just serves as some info template with no real value behind it. Elemental resist materia, PvP materia against cc effects are gone. Manual 30 point stat adjustment was ended too, which was at least a tiny bit an interesting concept for paladin, as the block rate and strength determined by strength and dexterity enabled you to maybe adjust it in such a way that you are blocking 1% more damage.
In Final Fantasy games, materia has skills, it would have been more fun if materia gave our skills certain traits I guess.

It's not really that Tenacity isn't good. It is. People will say that an extra 10% or whatever mitigation isn't good in raw numbers, but it is, because that 10% could prevent you from dying and of course there's the healing too which is a big factor from level 90 onwards. It's just, what's the point?

Let's take Warrior as an amazing example. It doesn't exactly... need anything else, in terms of healing or mitigation. So why would they stack a stat the improves healing and mitigation? The other tanks are in the same boat - even DRK, because TBN is actually really good at mitigating.

If tanks had no mitigation at all. No traits, no abilities, and had to try and transform themselves from a squishy DPS into a tank, then tenacity would be very much a consideration just so they can survive basic hits. But that just isn't the case in this game...

The only way we'd stack it is probably if the damage increase was made exactly the same as Determination. That said, if you do get tenacity on your gear and can't avoid it, it's not that bad in a sim. Barely noticed even. It's just min-maxing, as it always is. What is really bad is if a PLD gets some gear with Tenacity+Skill Speed!

I'm going to be honest about healers. I avoid Piety at all costs. I understand that it could be useful in the sense of helping MP management if a healer struggles, or allow you to DPS when MP is low. But these are all IF. Probably if you got resurrect or the party messed lots of stuff up and made you heal like crazy and spam resurrect. How can I realistically stack a stat that in many cases is not of benefit to anything - not just damage but not even to my healing?

Piety is my emotional support materia.

Does it have any sort of tangible effect on anything whatsoever? Probably not.
Does having it make me feel more comfortable anyway? In a delusional sort of way yes.
Obviously I’m just so good at healing I need a severe handicap (*hides all prior evidence of performance* lol)

Technically, the only thing anyone can do with piety and tenacity materia right now is exchange it with Mutamix over near Uldah for other random materia. Hard to believe it has almost been half a decade since the community started saying that the spell speed, skill speed, tenacity, and piety materia are basically worthless or just niche and can be removed, yet they haven't bothered doing so.

However, I feel like the entire materia system is a nostalgia bait trap that SE fell into with FFXIV that they should have just killed on the onset when they went to 2.0. I lived through the "Final Fantasy VII" saga of Square Enix's development cycle and I for one was never a fan of FFVII. It was a tech demo for the original playstation that a lot of millenials grew up on and that is all there is to it. In fact, it was quite a boring game back in the day and it was mostly a time filler until other games came out like the 3d platformers and adventure style games. Technically, the biggest problems with the past two expansions has been relying way too much on nostalgia of past experiences to get sales. The entire reason that final fantasy games succeeded was because they brought outside experiences and made them their own.

They are just another example of the DPS centric design of the game. The reason they're irrelevant is because of DH which IMO, should not have worked on tank/healer. The fact that healer prefer DH meld over Piety when DH give absolutely no benefit to their role tell you all you need to know about the issue and the dev intention with it.

If they made Direct Hit only work for DPS, healers and tanks would have to use yellow materia due to a lack of options. :p

They could make Tenacity into a better scaling version of Determination... And possibly make Piety into that as well...

SpS and SkS are still considered important for optimization, although I'm skeptical as to the benefits, especially when ping and animation locks are taken into consideration (some folks claim to be able to feel a noticeable difference between say 2.45 and 2.50. Meanwhile for me here in the Central US that's a smaller difference than my average ping ...).

Piety and Tenacity are in a weird spot. They never really seem worth actively going for (which is why the materia feel useless) but they seem to need to exist. Imagine a healer Manderville weapon for instance? You gotta pick three stats at the later stages and we're already down to only four picks (you can't choose DH on a EW healer relic), if Piety didn't exist you'd literally be forced to choose Spell Speed even if you didn't (for above reasons) want it!

It's probably because gemming gear is a time-honored tradition in MMORPGs in general (and 2.0 was very clearly imitating WoW to be safe after the disaster that XIV trying to "go its own way" was; you can see this trend even more clearly if you look at 1.0 footage and note differences, for instance in 1.0, consistent with JRPGs your MP didn't zero out on KO. Come 2.0 and it got wiped out on death just as the WoW gold standard calls for).

Whether gemming gear actually opens the hoped-for options is another kettle of worms; false choice has always been an issue in multiplayer games that try to offer any meaningful build choice.

It generally works for DoH/L because those are solo activities (plus what stats you need for DoH are more or less entirely a function of the rotation you are trying to use - and in particular you CAN have too much Craftsmanship there); similar for a game like Black Desert with its similar lightstones and crystals system (there is little group content and what there is is zergy, we're talking bossfights are basically S-ranks there).

For combat classes, yeah it's a lot iffier due to the group aspect placing much more weight on making best-choices at all times to the point that not-best-choices (even if not clearly off one's rocker) are considered dubious at best and sandbagging at worst; however, healers probably have the most reason for wiggle in this regard (because meme or no, healers do in fact have to adjust more often than any other role).

Piety/SPS should have been healer's most important secondary stat and tenacity being the same for tanks. Not having all jobs (with a few exceptions) going CRIT > DET/DH with a few variations.

It has plenty of purpose! I always use it at the materia lottery to get better materia.

Unfortunately the overall uselessness of the yellow materia is mainly due to the DPS focus of everything. One of the best forms of damage mitigation and resource management is to kill the enemy/boss as fast as possible after all.

In every case except niche uses, like an ultimate prog, Piety/Tenacity will just never be melded over things like Determination/Direct Hit. They even increased the boosts that Tenacity gives this expansion, and given every tank is still melding Deter/DH alongside Crit over it should tell you those boosts didn't do anything to help make it more appealing overall.

Even if the devs suddenly decided "The Direct Hit stat only affects the Red DPS Jobs now", they would still need to give Tenacity more of a boost and pretty much supercharge Piety by making it do something like Increased MP Regen + Damage up + Increased Healing Amount to make either stat even remotely appealing for tanks/healers to meld as most would just continue to shove as much Crit/Deter on everything as possible.
