There was an interesting post asking about the future plans for the Japanese class names in A Realm Reborn from a Japanese user and the Lore Team responded with a pretty lengthy comment that we wanted to pass along to you all!

The question of whether these fit the lore of FF is largely a question of each individual’s opinion and experience.

Black mage is a job name that has appeared many times in past games and is quite well known. In the future we plan on introducing more of these “classic jobs” into Eorzea. For example, after A Realm Reborn…*COUGH*
- What if new weapons are introduced?
If we were to implement a new weapon category such as "great sword," it doesn't necessarily mean we would need to introduce a brand-new class specifically for this. We would have to discuss with the battle team on this, including the possibility of allowing gladiators to choose between one-hand swords and great swords.
- How do you read the Japanese for each class?
There are actually multiple ways of reading the Japanese characters for each class, and either way is fine!
But the Lore Team has decided on a suggested way of reading each one. Below are the readings for the classes that have guilds:
(*Note: here comes the Japanese lesson!)
- Gladiator 剣術士 Ken-jutsu-shi
- Pugilist 格闘士 Kaku-tou-shi
- Marauder 斧術士 Fu-jutsu-shi (also read ono-jutsu-shi)
- Lancer 槍術士 Sou-jutsu-shi (also read yari-jutsu-shi)
- Archer 弓術士 Kyuu-jutsu-shi
- Musketeer 銃術士 Jyuu-jutsu-shi
- Conjurer 幻術士 Gen-jutsu-shi
- Thaumaturge 呪術士 Jyu-jutsu-shi
- Arcanist 巴術士 Ha-jutsu-shi

Good possible is that the fourth city will open (Is that long-waited Ishgard or just new city in the new area, defined as "Coming soon"?) and there will be another battle class guild for pet-class, etc.
It would be nice if the new classes will release at day of 2.0, so I can level together with friends, who come back to give second chance for 2.0 and I have all battle classes already 50 and there is no point for me to level another character.Quote:

I've always wished they would drop the class system and just stick with the new job system. Classes are pointless now except for the odd fact that you can do more dmg on archer than on bard... But what ever, all I can hope is they will stick to adding traditional jobs instead trying to reinvent the wheel all the time. Red Mage, yes please.

tbh with the current set up, we would benifit more from a sub job system vs what we have now,
1 it would for otherwise overly rounded jobs to become more role specific
2 would allow jobs that would normaly not be seen as strickly singularly aspected to become more diverse by strongly adjusting its abilities , given there would be no limitations on all available abilities for both job and sub job, not unlike ffxi
example: PLD can now become more offensive with a subjob like mnk or drg or war, giving a strong boost in offensive ablities, however if one wanted to focus on the defensive traits of tanking they could use war as a sub job , but if they wanted to focus on the self reginative traits of tanking they could sub job whm. There would be a new type of limitation to ability useage but would re open that customizable aspect to jobs I strongly enjoyed in ffxi.
maybe a compromise between the two, how bout if they are gona limit us to two jobs in wich we can pull abilities maybe make more abilities in the jobs we can select from , actually usefull to the current job set. Just makes sense. If i am subbing war on my pld , would be realy nice to have vengance or rampart lol. -

I do believe they stated somewhere (long, long ago) that the Japanese names are just names like Sword-user (something like sword-technique-user, translated), and Spear-user because they have less of a cultural background in different types of warriors. Most were know just as Samurai, as their caste, while in western history we know where Gladiators and Lancers (also known as "Dragoons", but we know why they can't be called that...) come from. Where Archers and Pugilism come from.
I'll try to find it, though I have a feeling it might be from around launch. -

I don't mind a majority of class names to stay the same, but can we at least replace THM? The class was completely butchered in terms of lore for the sake of BLM. Let's just change the name to something else at this point. There's no point in keeping THM if it doesn't have any similarity to THM at release. It's just being stubborn.

What I'd like to see is class icons being updated. Jobs have these nice looking colorful icons while class icons are so bland, I'm sure they feel lonely because of that ;<
