Anyone experience with FFXIV in 3D? Does it support it already?
If so, what system do you use for it or what do you recommend buying?

It is not supported natively. But can be "Fudged" using any 3D Hardware Rendering Method. But the UI isn't really designed for 3D play so you might hurt your eyes using it too long.
ive played using nvidia's 3d vision on a zalman 22 inch @1680x1050 monitor which is interlaced sys(phenom II 940@3.4 4gigs ddr2 gtx285) like Cairdeas said its not native but nvidia supports it and it works fairly well i got anywhere from 20-30 in town to 30-50 fps outside of town. just upgraded not to long ago to a radeon 5870 cant use nvidia's setup but now im using Tridef with same monitor and projector at times the 3D effect is good but not as good as nvidia's but i think thats b/c ive no clue how to fix the background doubling .. tried everything -.- anyways with the radeon using Tridef on i see 25-35 in town to 40-60 frames outside of town using ether interlaced(zalman) or checkerboard(projector) i havent had the chance to really tri out iz3d's drivers yet hope that helps.
I've played in 3d with no problems, looks great. I'm using the cheesy 3d also with the crappy blue/red glasses and it still looks pretty cool. Using a single GTX 460 atm.
Cool, I'm so going to try that.
Great feedback, this will help me decide how to build my new system. Was hoping FFXIV supported Native 3D already, but unfortunately it still doesn't. Thanks.
Nvidia 3D Vision has native support for FFXIV, the game actually has Nvidia's highest rating for 3D. I play using Nvidia's 3D surround and the game looks fantastic. I use two GTS 450s in SLi on moderate settings.
For those that need proof that Nvidia officially supports 3D in this game, check the patch notes for Nvidia's 260.99 drivers. (The official list of supported games on nvidia's site hasn't been update in months)

are there any software solutions for the ATI cards? (to play it in 3D)
yes just depends on which you want to do and which way you wanted to go. you have 2 options with about 2-3 ways they can be implemented. 1 ---> iz3d or 2 ---> Tridef those are the two companies you can go through to do 3D on an ATI card and each you can use a specific setup to your liking 1 --> 3D shutter glasses and a compatible 120hz monitor
2--> 3D shutter glasses and a compatible projector 3--> a compatible 3DTV with its own brand of 3D glasses and a 4th option if your lucky to find them an passive polarized monitor(zalman monitor, iz3d monitor) <--- hard to find nowadays.
europe seems to have the newer zalman monitors that do 1080p but they cost a pretty penny almost as much as the first 2 choices.
FFXIV looks GREAT with nvidia 3d vision.
The later drivers, like January 2011 and higher, support it as a 3D-Ready game.
it's one of the best looking games, although you will take a severe FPS hit, like 20 fps or more drop.
I play the game with Nvidia 3D Vision and it is Amazing I love it. The only problem I have is that it would be really great if we could play the game in windowed mode instead of full screen. You can play WoW that way, it is just something that Nvidia needs to set up and I am not sure why they haven't yet.
I never bought into the whole 3D thing. I'd rather the film industry focus on super high resolutions instead. Call me old fashioned, but I think I prefer films stay in 24 FPS and not move to 60 like Dr. Cameron wants. Oh well, I don't the kind of power in the film industry like I do in the FFXIV industry.
Edit: I do support this type of 3D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd3-eiid-Uw
i installed the iz3d driver and tried t play it with the red/cyan glasses...
Can someone share the setting? I am not happy with the results.
cheers
3d looks decent on this game, as others have posted it is not fully supported yet.
Get flawless FPS in all areas on my system, i7 980x 2x GTX 480
Been using a GTX580 now for awhile and a 3d Vision set / 24" screen. Looks good! Only problem is it needs to be in Full Screen (and i hate that), no alt+tabbing.. but its nice from time to time.. but i still find me playing on my other normal screen alot.. but its nice to have and to use from time to time :)
I am the biggest Stereoscopic 3D (S3D) nerd, I pretty much only play the game in S3D with nVidia 3D Vision. I have an AMD card also and for the life of me I could not get it working with AMD HD3D, I think I have an incompatible monitor. FFXIV is hands down one of the best games for S3D nothing renders incorrectly. I play on an Acer HN274H with SLI GTX480. I have tried all kinds of settings to get the best S3D experience.
Just to clear a few misconceptions. From the begining SE planned for S3D, at E3 they showed the game running in 3D Vision Surround and they made sure everything rendered correctly, this was back in beta. When the game launched it didn't "natively" support S3D which I only guess was a miss-communication with Nvidia because there was a 3D Vision profile for the benchmark and not the game. Later there was an Nvidia profile update to turn on S3D around December after the game was launched I couldn't find the driver number. Later nVidia added support for windowed 3D for Final Fantasy in beta 270.51.
SLI still is not natively supported and I had to do some hacks to kind of get it somewhat working, I only recently got a second GTX 480. I just found out that SLI and 3D vision windowed mode does not play well for FFXIV and I am sure that it will eventually get fixed.
Now to get any kind of good framerate in S3D you need to turn off AO. With AO enabled my single GTX 480 I was getting 15-20 FPS in S3D which I would play with when I was just soloing and doing side quests. With AO disabled I was getting around 40 FPS in S3D which is how I play when I am in a party. I am sure frame rates are better with a GTX 580 maybe someone else has numbers for that. You will want to go into the nVidia control panel and enable keyboard short cuts to play with convergence. Which is under Setup Stereoscopic 3D>> Set Keyboard Shortcuts. With that you can play with the convergence settings and do some neat things.
With 2.0 coming up I hope they don't break S3D with the new graphics engine. I also am excited that they said they were going to add DX11 features after 2.0 launches, again I hope they don't break S3D. When WoW added DX11 they broke S3D with their awesome water shader.
See look I am a S3D nerd I just found this emoticon with 3D glasses.
Well I am running 3dvision and everything is awesome but like others have said the only bummer is s3d only works in fullscreen so you cant alt-tab without crashing the game. Fine if you know what you are going to do all evening like ifrit battles but terrible if u are having a crafting day. Yes the UI is all 2d so it can be annoying watching the 3d polygons come through them.
works in nvidia 3d, 720p though and its not really made to make things pop out yet.
holy one huge incomplete sentence batman. lol.
I tried it in 3D using the red/blue glasses approach which you could poor-man rig up most likely just to see how it looks. It looked pretty cool. If I felt like investing in a 3D display with the usual glasses I think it would be a nice addition to the game. I think you can use it on other games too. It's worth looking into.
You should launch the game using Steam, so you can play with 3Dvision (I have too, GTX470, etc...) and browse on the web with Shift+Tab, Steam command for switching to chat/web/etc mode. Really useful. :)
How ? Steam -> My Games -> add a non-steam game -> click on ff.
This is not true 3D Vision does work in windowed mode, just not with SLI enabled. To make sure it works go into the Nvidia Control panel and I think it is under Stereoscopic Settings. There is a drop down and turn it to Always run 3D. I am at work so I don't know the exact wording. I will try to update the post when I get home.
i apologize yes 3d vision works in windowed mode, but for me I use a projector and windowed 3d games often dont work or have issues. with ffxiv if i have it configured to windowed and run it in s3d then it automatically fullscreens it for me. thanks for the steam tip though just added it.
Work here with Nvidia 3D vision
Is very good, but if you play in full HD is a big pain for VGA.
I have a Gtx 590, and with general drawing quality to 8 (normal, DoF ON, AO off and 8x AA) i have constant 60 fps everywhere (not in uldah where i have 35-58)
I suppose that with a 580 or similar you can have same performace with 4x AA or wig general drawing to 7
With 3D on PC must render 2x image with full HD resolution (with quality 8) then setting lower value can work very very well (if you want to use full HD resolution)
3D+ general drawing quality 9-10--->NO WAY XD
I switched to 'always on' and now works in windowed! Super tip, thanks!
