I thought Dawntrail was going to be a grand adventure surrounded by friends

I came into this expansion so excited. I knew we weren't getting anything too high stakes, but trusted the writing team would absolutely focus in on this idea of a grand new adventure with new friends.

Finally, Krile was going to have her time to shine! I'm not a big Krile fan, only because she never really gets to do anything. I couldn't wait to see how they would utilize her, and if they would really win me over with her after having her sit on the bench for so long.

Erenville was one of my favorite side characters in Endwalker, and seeing him of all people show up at the start of the Dawntrail trailer blew my mind! Yes! A pragmatic and dry-witted bunny boy with an awesome accent is going to get pulled into our crazy adventure! I can't wait to see how they develop him! I bet he'll have an awesome new dynamic we haven't seen from the scions!

And last we have Wuk Lamat! The humor in her intro didn't really land for me, but I do like her energy and it's always cool seeing a new face! I wonder if she has any ulterior motives for bringing us along to this contest. I'll be she turns out to be much more layered than she initially lets on! Even if she's not the deepest character, I'll bet they'll do some real fun and creative stuff with her!

I couldn't wait! I woke up at 5am and got right into the MSQ! I set out for Tuliyollal and...!

Krile... Sat there... She swung a paint brush in a couple scenes. She occasionally brought up her grandfather. Mostly she just giggled and complimented Wuk Lamat. They gave her one major scene where the screen faded to black before she could say anything of substance.

Erenville... Stood around scolding Wuk Lamat most of the time. He gave her advice. She usually ignored it. He gave us instructions on where to go and how to get there. Nothing ever centered on him. We had one 30 second fireside chat where he talked about how he started being a gleaner. That was it. They gave him one scene toward the end. I didn't feel any emotions.

Wuk Lamat. She hogged every second of the spotlight. Turns out, she was exactly who she was when she was introduced. No underlying complexity, no hidden motives. She's a loud impulsive girl who wants to win the throne. She becomes a loud slightly less impulsive girl who wins the throne. She gets sea sick. She falls down holes. She doesn't like alpacas. She doesn't like heights. She doesn't like lava. She is not interesting enough of a character to be taking up all this screentime. She actively makes every conversation about her. Every scene is about her. All the other characters are set pieces to react to her.

She goes from mildly annoying but a bit endearing to an absolute blackhole that everything revolves around. A blackhole that sucks up all the potentially interesting writing and churns out childish comedy gags and preachy life lessons like "friends are important" and "understanding others is important" and "be yourself". I go from "I think I'll like Wuk Lamat" to "They must be setting up Wuk Lamat for a more dynamic change later" to "Wuk Lamat is hurting my enjoyment of the story" to "I hate Wuk Lamat's affect on everything I'm experiencing".

I hate it. I can't tell you how disappointed I am. I beat the MSQ last night and I'm still reeling. That's it. The credits rolled. What I experienced was Dawntrail. I don't think my expectations were too high going in, but they were absolutely stomped into the dirt. I'm glad for those of you who are enjoying the story and characters, but for me, this will be the last time I pre-order an expansion. Next time I'll be waiting, because the gameplay sure as hell doesn't carry this game, and neither does the writing anymore apparently. Final Fantasy XIV's characters have made me feel things, even brought me close to tears on a few occasions, and for someone as jaded and hard to impress as I am that's a big deal.

This has been incredibly disheartening.

Dead on. It is incredibly disappointing after waiting this long.

And if there is one thing I never expected myself to say it is "I wish there was more Krile in the story".

Honestly it felt like they didn't have time or forgot to or whatever the reason to properly set the stakes. You had the divisions of people who supported their perspective promises....Why not have intrigue surrounding that? I say it because we're not talking about the ruler of a single nation but the ruler of an entire freaking continent. Peace or not....That should be enough to have at least a measure of intrigue regarding the different factions and so forth.

I'm fine being the menacing adventurer on the sidelines but it felt more like a sideline adventure and a babysitting job rather than anything remotely interesting happening. The first two zones were lacking of anything definite either, neither felt fleshed out enough and severely lacked a theme...any proper theme.

A clan of merchants that deal fairly, that's great...Unless you did the side quests afterwards there was nothing in depth about these people beyond that they're merchants and control trade in Tural. There is no side that exploits or manages the environment properly, no side that seeks greater power or influence....It's really bereft of any sort of depth.

I'm still enjoying the expansion and the dungeons and the trials have been great so far. The zones are very beautiful if a little on the generic side and Tuyollal is a beautiful city and the music is awesome. Yet, first expansion I ever played since Heavensward where I'am almost enjoying the side quests more than the MSQ.

And wanted to add that by theme there was no in depth connection to the story or characters or even the sheer fact of being interesting by itself to distinguish it. I'm speaking of the first three zones, can't speak of the last 3 for haven't done them yet and of the first 3 thematically the third one is the best but not by much.

You can look at any zone of any expansion and you can find a sort of theme connecting it with the story, characters, overall arch...something. The zones were gorgeous, the music was great but outside of the electors you could easily have replaced the first two zones especially and players would have never noticed the difference in relation to the story.

I'm still working on the MS, so I haven't experienced it all, but I think you might be forgetting something. This is supposed to be the start of a brand-new arc. Not merely a new expansion but an entirely new saga. I think this slow start is an echo (haha, echo) of how ARR began. I fully expect the story to crescendo.

I'm sorry you didn't get the epic adventure you were expecting, but remember that this truly is a new beginning, a foundation of what is to come. Honestly, I felt like Endwalker moved too fast with all the death and carnage smacking you in the face from the get-go, but that was the very end of a decade long ark while this is a much simpler beginning of a brand-new arc that will no doubt go on for several expansions. I'm eager to see where the game and characters go from here.

In short, give it some more time.

As someone who has finished the MSQ, you're wrong. I wont spoil it but functionally everything resolved by the end of the story no setup for anything a terribly tied ribbon on the package that is this expac.

This is ARR if ARR was us following around the chocobo carriage NPC while he spoke to the scions, did everything, and then at the end of that version of ARR he defeated all the Ascians and Zodiark and endsinger.

No, I did not forget! You and everyone else defending Dawntrail against any criticism keeps dropping that line like it means anything.

"It's the start of a saga, so you shouldn't have any expectations going in." is some of the worst logic and excuse for any criticism. The story DOES crescendo. They wrap up Dawntrail. My experience with Dawntrail SUCKED.

I'm not here to talk about the next expansion. I'm not here to talk about the new story arc. I'm here to talk about Dawntrail. When the other expansions are released I will talk about those.

You don't go "Well that movie sucked, but I can't judge it because it has a sequel in the works". You judge a piece of art as it is. If the rest of the arc is great, then that's GREAT! I hope it is! My experience with Dawntrail would still suck. This is how criticism, media, and the general flow of time works.

Stormblood didn't really have a whole lot left to turn into magic. It wasn't till 4.1 they started laying the seeds for what would be SHB. I think the main point of the expac might have been to give the WoL ties to tural, and establish a new character for future plot lines. In an interview with Jesse cox, Yoshi P acknowledged they don't have any Concrete story plans yet and are going to gauge how the player base responds to Dawntrail MSQ. Getting the setting established Seemed to be the priority rather than giving players loose plot threads to speculate on.

God this should be a real awakening for them then. I really hope they don't go with the plot threads at the end of Dawntrail. I have no faith in them being able to use them in a coherent and interesting way after seeing how they were thrown into the last 10% of the plot.

I don't think that's quite true. ARR now has a lot of defenders for establishing the setting. Its still to date, the worst story experience in the game, and people do defend it because it did establish some neat threads. To clarify. i am not trying to invalidate your feelings about Dawn trail. I am merely saying people do give ARR props for what came later.

I'm not surprised it seems all wrapped up, but I'm sure it's not. This is an entirely new continent after all, and the man himself says it's a new beginning, so ya, there's a lot more coming. Book one of a second series. You say not to forgive how bad a movie is because there's a sequel coming, but c'mon, the movie isn't even over yet. In fact, it has barely started.

Like credits rolling in FF14 means anything.

I’m currently in the 5th zone. It’s taken me this long since the game came up on Friday morning (take away ~6 hours that I spent leveling up Pictomancer) to get here because I have to keep stopping and restarting the MSQ due to how unengaging it is. For reference, when I play early access for expac launches, I’m usually already done with the MSQ by this point. I finished both ShB and EW on Monday evening after their early access launch. SB took a bit longer, but a lot of that was due to difficulties such as Raubahn Savage and Pipin EX, alongside login queues and the issues that happened back then.

I didn’t go into Dawntrail with any expectations that the writing was going to be Shadowbringers level of quality—I wasn’t expecting the quality to be on the floor, though. I was moderately curious about how the developers would handle the beginning of a new arc now that the Hydaelyn/Zodiark/Ascians story has wrapped up. And while there were FINALLY some moments about midway through where I sat up and started getting engaged, my engagement is still taking a hit due to a certain character.

Someone else said it, so I’ll just repeat: I think the enjoyment of Dawntrail for any individual is going to hinge entirely on whether or not they like Wut Lamat. If you like her, then you will probably like the expansion and the story. If you don’t like her, you are going to struggle.

And I am struggling. I just cannot vibe with her. She seems way too one dimensional. Everyone that does like her keeps saying she has some character growth moment, but I’m going into the level 98 MSQ and I’m still waiting for that moment… They say she’s quirky and relatable, but her “quirks” are way overplayed and just seem like they were thrown in there to try and give her “relatability” or “flaws”. (Which there’s a name for characters like that…)

Others say this is supposed to be a reset akin to ARR—well, at least in ARR, I might have been running the errands of others, but at least I was ACTIVELY DOING STUFF. In Dawntrail, the majority of my time has been spent acting as a set dressing for the Wut Lamat Show. I don’t know how many quests passed before I got the “go slay x amount of random monsters” quest. I think there’s also only been like 3 solo instances up to level 98, and one of them doesn’t really count because you had to play as ANOTHER CHARACTER and not even your own.

I would prefer to like her—but I just cannot. I cannot find anything likable about her for me, personally.

Story spoiler below for ~level 95 MSQ:

The first moment of enjoyment I had in the MSQ was in the 4th zone around level 95 where it was just me and Erenville—and one character was noticeably absent. I was finally just…adventuring. Erenville and the WoL set out to go back to his village, got pulled into some shenanigans, helped a guy oust a dirty cop all Western-style and free his friends.

It was amazing. I was laughing and having fun. THAT was what I had in mind when I thought about an ARR reset: traveling, getting pulled into random events, helping people. Not being background fodder for another character and actively NOT participating in anything happening outside of smiling and nodding a lot.

The last 30+ hours of the "movie" have sucked.

Book 1, the one called Dawntrail, sucked.

Final Fantasy 14's 7.0 patch, the one that holds the 30+ hours of MSQ content, sucked.

That thing. You know. The game that we are all currently playing right now? That one. For me, it sucked.

Is that specific enough? Am I allowed to hold these opinions? I really hope I don't have to wait for the servers to close down before my criticisms of FFXIV are valid.

This is valid, but I can tell you right now that the plot threads established at the very end of Dawntrail do not excite me. They could potentially develop and use them in interesting ways, but the setup so far is literally just a mcguffin with no explanation as to the how or why. If it becomes a good plot device later, it will not be because of what was done with it here. It would be like ARR just dropping the word ascian and showing a dude in a black robe right before the credits roll. Ultimately nothing, even if it becomes something much larger and greater later down the line. ARR's plot threads are interesting and developed within ARR itself, and are expanded upon later.

But it is a grand adventure surrounded by friends. 'Friends' being Wuk Lamat, Wuk Lamat and even more Wuk Lamat

95% of the time her face and annoying yap fill my screen with joy :rolleyes:

All I wanted to do was go adventuring with G'raha like we promised, and then all he gets is going to the one dungeon in EW post story and then they write him out entirely lmao.

I started zone 4 today. And for about 15 min, it was such a breath of fresh air! Exactly what I was hoping this expansion would be. But then we meet certain NPC and we're back to the world evolving around Wuk Lamat. Because obviously the first person we decide to help will be closely connected to her. If it makes you feel any better

He gets called up to basically help make a couple cannons for the Boomtrain to get you into the mystery orb.

And then promptly gets sidelined again for the Wuk Lamat show.

For being an expansion that was supposed to be us going back to adventuring we do everything but that actually.

I don‘t mind the story so far even though it’s not my favorite. I don‘t even really mind Wuk Lamat being forced in my face every literal second that much even though she’s annoying more by the minute.

But we are just trotting behind others without an agenda. A soulless husk. I don‘t think my WoL did anything out of free will till now (I‘m after the Wild West zone right now).
Estinien lives our life now. He goes adventuring and has fun. I‘m just there to nod I guess?
Even the dialogue choices are lackluster this time (reminding me of Genshin sometimes, not a good thing).

I can‘t believe I say this but… I want Zenos back. At least my character existed back then as a person.

I will withhold final judgment till the end but right now the expansion is a 6 or 7 for me. Just slightly above Stormblood.

When we all looked at World of Warcraft and said, god no one could screw up a story this badly. That wasn't supposed to be a god dam challenge SE

It's also the one you paid for, and will need to continue to pay for to see anything past 7.0.

Whenever people say DT's pacing and storytelling are ok because it's supposed to be like ARR I want to lie down in despair because its terrible pacing is still one of ARR's major points of criticism. DT's story being a new beginning doesn't justify recreating ARR's worst aspects. They should have taken this opportunity to explicitly avoid those mistakes and yet they embraced them full force.

You nailed it. I was so excited to learn more about Krile and her past - granted we did get a little bit, thankfully - but it still fell flat. Erenville was the saving grace for me. While the development wasn't there, as you pointed out, at least when he was on the screen I had about a 20% chance of being grouped with him instead of Wuk Lamat.

Which brings me to Wuk Lamat - I don't care that I wasn't the main character of this story, but I do care that the MC I was forced to be around was insufferable. I don't like that the Scions were reduced to side bits that were only around to nod, giggle or pretend to think while rubbing their chins whenever she said or did something. I think she's a weak character overall and I actually started skipping scenes with all of her back and forth just to escape her. She was omnipresent - even when we thought she was gone and done with, oop here she is again! I haven't been this disappointed in the MSQ ever in the 9 years I've been playing.

We WERE supposed to go on an adventure... But we got stuck babysitting a cat who clearly got some brain damage from nearly drowning. And then when a major threat to the world comes along, we're still forced to keep doing the babysitting while dealing with that.

Eh I don't think the story was boring, at least not after the first couple of zones (but I had that problem with EW, too).

But I agree with the OP that the biggest problem by a country malm is that there was way too much focus on Wuk Lamat, and I don't think she was charismatic enough for that level of spotlight. A lead character or antagonist can easily make or break a story.

It was shit.

Taking this from the other thread, but I think someone from the Japanese forums put it best.

Honestly, I would have prefered if the WoL was just actually taking a vacation during the first part of the expansion and exploring things on his own and enjoying his time, giving more screentime to Krile and Erenville, while occasionally watching Wuk Lamat run around in the background desperately fumbling to do the trials, and then you could occasionally help and watch her grow. I don't think Wuk is necessarily a bad character, but she is pushed so hard if you don't like her then there's nothing else to hang onto for most of the story.

We were supposed to go on an adventure, with our Scion Friends, but ended up with someones Fursona Forced into the spotlight, and a Voice actor that makes ARR VA's look good.

There was one point during the story that sums up DT pretty well, and it's when you choose the dialogue option "I'm gonna take a nap" after being asked what you're going to do and Erenville interjects and is like "I think they mean they'll help Wuk Lamat."

The story was never about you, you're just playing second fiddle to the Mary Sue MC and being muscle when needed, not that she needs the muscle because she stops struggling with combat after a few history lessons and going "Blah blah blah work together peace is good strength in unity etc."

Doesn't ever struggle after that, never screws up catastrophically and gets someone killed, never struggles with grief over any mistakes she made, is just flawless and perfect after acting like a girlfailure for a few scenes

Yeah I can no longer look at the title screen cinematic anymore because the vibe is so different from how we actually getting to the point I cringed every time I look at it.

Just stop with that. There are ways to start a new arc. To show a new area(which coincidently, is what every single expansion has done, though none so poorly as DT). The characters were flat. Mary Sue Wuk Lamat was terrible in every single way imagineable, and was forced down our throats 139 times, and the story was a mess. I didn't pre-order every expansion over the last 9 years, to enter someone's middle school fanfic.

oh don't trashtalk fanfics, there are way better written ones than the whole DT, it's more like child books than fanfic. sometimes i feel like DT was totally made by AI (from story to gamedesign), it's the only excuse i can see.
