I have my house at 0 lighting and it's just... super bright now. It kind of ruins the whole vibe I was going for.

Yep, had a night-sky using flooring mats and hooboy, it looks terrible now. :(
Thank you for making this thread, because I noticed this too right away!!
The lighting in houses appears to be broken.
You cannot make it as dark as you could before, and at the very same time, you cannot make it as bright as you could before either. The overhead lamp is EXTREMLY harsh now! and if you block it, it throws your house into this weird semi-darkness! Both ways like this, we cannot get the feeling that we intended to have in our homes!
Please adjust the lighting in housing to fix this!
Let us adjust our lights back to making it 100% lights off like we could before. Remove how overly lit it is when you turn the lights off. Then also, adjust the brightest setting back to a level that full brightens the whole house in a softer still vivid way. Look at older housing pictures and compare to now. The lighting is very different and not as nice now! Currently, the difference between 1-5 is VERY minimal, when it used to be that each 1-5 setting was quite distinct! Please make it as it used to be again!
Thank you for reading.
Was about to post about this, so thank you for doing so!
The graphics update has made apartment/housing lighting too bright.
For example, at lighting setting 0, an apartment should be almost pitch black (if it has no lights set up in it). Now, it's still bright enough to see things.
This is at any time of the day/night cycle.
This has taken away from the magic and fun of making creative and clever lighting decisions, and will affect the dark aesthetic of housing I'm sure many people have spent a long time designing.
Please revert! <3
2nd this. Coming home to my 0 lighting house and being basically blinded. It's not it. Just hoping to give this post a bit more attention because It should be reverted.
Agreed. The lighting update is good where it's good, but it seems that really dark areas have been compromised.
I'm having the same issues. Interior Lighting is way too bright. I already posted images for comparison of my house in another thread: https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...raphics-update
I believe i've seen dark areas in the game since the engine upgrade, so maybe they just need to tweak the interior lighting settings for houses!
Yea, it certainly sucked the darker vibe out of my rooms
I have to agree. I use lighting 0 so I can rely on other light sources like lamps for a more favorable ambiance, but after the update, it's as if lighting is set to a 2-3 when set to 0.
I do hope something can be done about this.
Used to keep mine on 2, it looked brighter than 5! 0 doesn’t help either, all it does is make the bulbs on the chandelier look like they’re turned off, but the room stays bright anyway. It makes all the colors of the furnishings look washed out…
Its really bad in my FC House now, i get severe FPS drops when i enter the house because of all the light effects, also it is really bright now, i have to turn down the light to 0 to have the same effect as light 2-3 before.

Tbh it's not only houses. Any interior that looked better in lower lights, it's completely destroyed now. You can watch some comparisons of ARR end on youtube: looks like the camera has a flashlight attached lmao.
I hope they fix it. Update worked flawless on open areas, awful in any interior.
Ohhh i see watcha mean now. But yes their some light source coming off your center image. Its also doing that in my fishtank an it is abit bothersome.

Ah, was wondering if I was the only one that was having this issue so I came here to post a thread myself.
I generally always keep my house at Light Level 0 as I use a lot of ambient light items/lamps/the starry night skylight/etc. Now, after the graphics update, I find my house to be way too bright and all of the lighting items I use feel like they have no impact or effect because the overall lighting isn't dark enough.
No issues with the brightest lighting options at all, but the darkest one or two settings need to be way darker than they currently are.
Ok finally found my screenshots… top pic is EW, lighting at 2. Bottom is DT, lighting at 1.

The graphical Update is only good in the world itself on environment. I actually like how the world itself looks a lot and it runs well performance wise, However...
Character models and Interior Housing have been ruined :(
I desperately plea that they revert all the changes and textures/models of players and all housing furnishings that are indoor. PLEASE! I beg of you. Furnishings are making it so places where me and friends used to have 60 fps we now have 15 fps. Builds that had certain lighting and colors / themes for interior housing design now are ruined. We built our housing builds based on how the lighting effects looked at the time and now this effectively pulls the rug out from under anyone that has a build they purchased or commissioned from a housing designer.
I don't even want the slot increase if me and my friends can't enjoy our time in the house anymore because something is killing our FPS. Maybe it's because you changed Luminous Wooden Loft to produce weird yellow FPS KILLING light that makes a once beautiful combo become ugly as heck. Combo being Luminous wooden loft above Eulmoran Marble Flooring. This combo once looked great but now it kills your FPS while looking horrible. WHY? Please just revert the graphics update for Interior Housing and Character Models. Miqo'te Female Face 3 Mouth 4 got her lips mutilated by botched plastic surgery and i might quit the game because of it unless a modder makes a mod for old character models and i start modding. I might get depressed and be forced to move on to a different game after thinking this was my home where i could stay and be happy the way things were.
</3
I love this game and i almost feel like someone is trying to make us all quit by changing the faces of our characters when we didn't ask for it. I don't like my miqo'te anymore. She's a fake. I want my character back. :(
Suggesting i try the free fantasia adds insult to injury. I guess I have to let Feathetaria die and rest in peace because this isn't my character anymore.
PLEASE just add some settings in graphics similar to "Movement Physics" and "Shadows" Sections that have Options such as Display or Hide, and Self / Others. You NEED to allow us to opt in or out of this graphical update. I hate my characters lips, now, and Fantasia won't fix it. Considering quitting unless a modder makes a mod for old models :(
Please allow us to opt in for the graphics update in settings for the world, the lighting, the character models and interior housing. We need 4 separate options.

any gamma settings that could help with gaining the depth in dark-lit rooms?
Not in my experience. I have one dark build and turning gamma down doesn't do anything to help the relative contrast problem.
Sure the whole screen gets darker, but that includes the light sources we want to actually highlight in these bullds.
The problem isn't just the the whole room has a bright haze applied to it, it's that materials aren't correctly reflective anymore. Unlike the rest of the old areas where there is too much senseless reflective glare in places that don't make sense, in houses surfaces have seemed to reject custom light almost completely or some light sources are now totally overwhelmed by others.
My house looks nothing at all like what I designed now. It's like a burglar broke in and tore the place up. It's insulting and offensive.
Sharing pictures too so hopefully this gets addressed ASAP, I used to love my house and this update completely ruined it.

These pictures are with the exact same conditions, Lighting at 0, no gpose, no filters.
IT'S BAD. The atmosphere in the player house is completely different. It should not be this bright on light 0. I changed the gamma from 50 to 0 and that seems to of gotten me sort of close to where we used to be, but, it messes with the rest of the game >.< .
The floors don't even look the same, they got like a glaze over them or something? BUT YEAH, maybe this is some kinda bug, b/c it's not the same as the rest of the game.
Side note: That space is so nice. omg love it!!
Easy Fix.
Please allow us to set house lighting to negative values to actually darken the house. Many of us turn the lights to zero to control what light sources we are using - under the new system it feels like there is "light" coming out of nowhere to illuminate the space.
So just allow us to turn lights to -1 to actually "darken" the room or even -2 for near pitch black..
