Ray-Tracing? Physics? Open Zones?

Hi! :)

I'm suuuper stoaked about the new graphics update finally coming to 7.0(it is LONG overdue) but I'm curious to know if Yoshi has ever stated/mentioned/alluded to making further overall quality improvements/upgrades/overhaules to the game in the future post 7.0? Specifically regarding things like physics(character animations, walking/running animations, tail/ear animations, clothing physics, etc.), more dynamic weather conditions, a 3-d skybox(instead of the 2-d flat pictures stationed in the sky), etc.?

I also wonder if they drop PS4/XOne support come 8.0 would they implement improvements in these things above that also could use some tender love and care? I know with the new physical based rendering system they are switching over to for the graphics update that would allow ray-tracing and I am wondering if they would ever implement that as well? Ray-tracing made a WORLD of difference in fidelity when you look at old games like Minecraft, and in FF14 dungeons the rays bounding around would be ASTOUNDING(let alone global lighting, reflections, etc.) and it could be an optional thing to turn on if you have a PC or console that actually supports it. Did Yoshi ever mention anything like this?

ALSO, if they drop PS4/XOne support come 8.0, I'm thinking of the SSD capabilities in the new consoles and PC's that would make streaming in assets and zones a breeze, and maybe the would open up the zones instead of making them instanced if that could be a possibility as well?

Would reeeeeally really love these quality improvements come next expansion, but I have no idea if Yoshi and the devs would work on this or mentioned it at all? What are your thoughts? Also I would like to state I know with how old the engine was and where it came from and that this IS an MMO and expectations should be kept in check, but I am sure updates not necessarily overhauls could be improved upon and implemented to an extent no?

Anything to the physics like hair and clothing, i assume needs a rewriting of the games engine which is most likely not going to happen anytime soon. I think Yoshi-P said we arent going to Directx 12 so thats probably not gonna happen either. Then again never say never... right?

Well firstly they called it the "First Graphical Update" which implies a second is expected.

Secondly, they have mentioned about how, I think it was the bones, were developed with future-proofing in mind so that animations could be improved retroactively in the future.

Thirdly, they have changed running animations before a long time ago in a patch. They gave each job a unique sprint animation which did not used to be a thing, so they could do more things like that someday.

Although I don't know about Ray Tracing, I know that lighting is a massive part of the design process and they put a lot of attention into it because, for example, it had a massive impact on how Amh Araeng appeared (this was one of the examples they showed in a development panel discussing the lighting). They also put a huge amount of work into the sky and the weather. In other words, if they switched to some more automated method, it could affect or ruin the work they put in to making zones look a certain way. That is most likely why they haven't rushed to do it.

Obviously they will be likely to drop PS4 when the amount of people using it is low enough, although I think many FFXIV players would just upgrade anyway if pressured to.

The engine is capable of a lot more as you see in FF16, but they limit it on purpose for various reasons. Some of those reasons might make sense (like the effect on a PS4 player or the effect in a congested area) but other times it is due to infrastructure decisions or a mindset thing.

I do love the sound of the "1st graphical update", hopefully Yoshi didn't mean just the first round until they hit ARR and older content and actually meant more improvements overall graphically! My hope is that for now we get updated "HD" hair but in the future get a hair overhaul with even more improvements and physics/movement etc. That would be awesome and would enhance the work they are doing now with skin and faces!

I'm glad they can improve on the skeletal meshes in the game as well if they wanted to, improving physics will help bring more immersion and creativity to the characters/races, even to clothing if they can do it helps A LOT to keep the game fresh and future proof so it doesn't feel like pretty looking static hard characters when fighting etc.

I can see if they don't make changes to the skybox or weather, but again I hope they do :( It could work even further for areas without compromising their artistic vision, look at how improving the fog effects made the new Sharlayan area looked, I can only imagine further improvements to weather can enhance the artistic vision for so many areas!

I think they tried dabbling into some basic clothing physics with the Phoenix Riser suit from last year's Moonfire Faire, as the suit had those bits dangling in the back which unlike other such armors weren't tied to your character's legs movements and could somewhat independently move.

We probably won't get physics added onto old outfits, unless they do an updated version of them like they did Virtu gear in PvP when they first brought in CC. But moving onto DT we might see outfits where coats and capes are no longer magically attached to your legs.

Clothing that reacts to wind and movement would be incredible. At the very least they should untie physics from FPS, anything above 75fps or so freezes the physics engine that we "have" right now. Artificially holding your game back to 60fps is something they should stop doing in this day and age.

Thank for the reply, I had to look up the item you were talking about, I see what you mean! Some of the new technologies and techniques they are using to implement the new graphics update was really cool(for example, in order to add more details to the face they did increase the polygon count, but every single face/race has the same amount of polygons using this new technology, it's REALLY cool and it helps performance) and works to help with performance, I would imagine in 2026 when most likely PS4/XOne support is dropped and they can maybe push the hardware limitations a bit more they might have some more newer age solutions to improving these things without it drastically affecting performance in game so we get a better quality improvement, especially since they want to continue to support and create new content for the game 8 years from now, I just wish we had more info if they are planning anything :\

If we are, it won't be until after Dawntrail now. They've already had all the content/changes finalized and it's too late to add anything new. If we were getting a 2nd update in the near future, I feel like we would know by now.

My money is on 8.0 now for any hope of hearing something.

Well they would have to dump support for the old XBox and PS4 for Raytracing and meaningful physics. I doubt that will happen before the Xpac after Dawntrail.

Yes, definitely! For sure I wouldn't expect anything during the lifecycle of Dawntrail, I really hope they do for 8.0 though! They implemented some really impressive tools that don't just upgrade the quality of the game but help with performance, like how they added polygons to the faces but every face uses the same number of polygons. I can only imagine if they focused their next expansion efforts on ditching the limitations of the old hardware and implementing some newer tools they could do something quite impressive with ray-tracing, physics, or weather, etc.

Oh for sure! I think some positive news they gave, unless I am mistaken, is they are planning to drop PS4/XOne support in the future, I just don't remember if they specifically stated this or it was heavily implied?

Assumption by the community AFAIK.

They did drop PS3 support with Stormblood, it would be the logical assumption that PS4/Xbox One support would eventually drop as well. People were speculating it would happen with DT but it would seem to not be the case, but it's extremely likely to happen at the release of the next expansion at the latest.

I would have never expected it to happen with DT. It takes years for people to slowly decide to upgrade things and there was a massive shortage of PS5s for a few years which has to be taken into account. But it would make sense for them to consider it for 8.0, because by then PS5 will technically have been out for about 6 years and PS4 for 13 years.

Currently, only about 50% of Playstation users have upgraded to PS5.

There will not be any ray tracing in the game until it gets updated to support either DX12 or Vulkan as DX11 can not do RT anything.

They are putting FSR1 in the game and not FSR2 and leaving out any frame gen tech so I'm pretty sure they didn't do a lot in terms of PC optimizations. Maybe they pulled a Warframe and rewrote their lightning engine which will go a long way in how the game looks and possibly even optimized it to be able to run on older consoles to a degree. Big picture though, I assume most people will be disappointed with how same-y the game will look besides the lighting. That said they could knock it out of the park with the texture of all the gear and make it really pop but they haven't showed any of that stuff off yet. Also the anti aliasing implementation better be good otherwise it will look like a temporal mess like other games that just throw TAA in and hope it works out.

Long story short, don't get your hopes up. Better grass, lighting, textures (maybe) and AA, that is pretty much all you are getting in the update.

Yea the PS5 hasn't exactly been the most popular system, but with the graphics update quite reasonably increasing requirements it would've made sense for the older system to start losing support... But I don't mind them keeping them going for a few more years.

Well stated; real polygon/mesh changes and overall graphical fidelity outside of character's faces won't be there. Let's hope AI can remesh the sausage fingers and blocky thighs in some future.

I do like to try and remain an optimistic person though, setting the new base requirements for PS5/XSX level come 8.0 if/when they most likely drop support for PS4/XOne(which will be 13 years old by the time of 8.0 in 2026 earliest) I would imagine there's more improvements they can make for the game hopefully with increased hardware baselines. But based on what you're saying, they COULD potentially if they wanted upgrade to DX12 or Vulkan and this would allow them to develop/implement ray-tracing options? Do you think this is plausible? If they are at least finally updating AA in the game from the ancient FXAA and implementing FSR1 and DLSS 2, isn't it possible come 8.0 they could upgrade to even newer FSR/DLSS and maybe finally upgrade to DX12?

They *can* do a lot of things. However I don't see them doing another engine once over again for at least another 2 expansions. If they were going to do major MAJOR things under the hood this would have been the time to do it with Luminous Studios getting shuttered because of Forespoken. They would have had everyone that was any good at messing with the Luminous engine available to them to work on XIV for this engine update. However they did switch from DX9 to DX11 and it took them a long time to do so, could happen again i suppose. Also the devs would never switch to Vulkan even though they probably should as it would simplify supporting the Mac version but I'm guessing that isn't in the cards as it would take much longer and more work than going from 11 to 12. The biggest issue i see with them switching to DX12 (and i am NO expert in this so it is a stupidly simplified explanation of things) is memory management becomes the devs problem where as DX11 it is handled by the API itself. Memory management is one of the main factors in how the public perceives a game being "optimized" or not so it puts a lot more pressure on the devs and ....honestly I just don't think the XIV team is good enough to do it, at least not all at once or for a long time. Something like having the launcher have a beta DX12 version for 4 years or something might be in the cards but i dunno.

I get being optimistic about things but I take a more pragmatic approach. I know that it is a big deal for square to end support for consoles. You could argue that they even held on to the Ps3 for too long and many of the engines issues come from the Ps3 having 256MBs of VRAM and 256MBs of system RAM. However with the Ps4 you still have around 12 gigs of total RAM which is about what the normal mid range graphics card has today. I don't see them ending Ps4 support for another 2 expansions. I don't think they have a FSR type thing on Ps4 so i would guess they would be likely to add that to the console (depending on how many people still play on ps4) to extend its support even longer. So yeah, I'd say 9.0 or 10 before the Ps4 goes bye bye.


Ohh and the Xbox one isn't supported, just the X and S. You could make the case that the S is a slightly more powerful version of the XbOne and you would be right but microsoft has a policy that states you have to have your game come out and be supported by both the S and X, soooooooo. In 4+ years time you can blame microsoft if the ps4 and S still have support.

Thanks for your reply and explanation! I find all of this so fascinating! I forgot that the engine was in the similar family as their Luminous Engine, I wonder with all the years of work and customization's if it can even still be considered that? I wonder if there are any other technologies or plug-ins/add-ons they could utilize as support as well? I guess it's not that simple given it's an MMORPG?

Oh and yes, I think the whole Series S was just ridiculous, they should have just came out with the Series X but whatever... I don't think the graphics update is coming to PS4 though for 7.0 so that still gives me an inkling that they are gonna drop support for PS4 come 8.0 because any new content would have to be made with older graphics and would be more work for them no? I guess no one really knows their plans and we'll have to wait and see, but it's still fun to talk about it! :D

I'm not sure how the fork of xiv's engine differs from the one they made ff15 or forespoken with but the xiv engine is speculated to be the same one they made 16 with as the dev team that made 16 also makes 14. I'm still pissed it make DT over a year late because if they wanted to make a devil may cry clone they should have named it something other than "Final Fantasy"... anyway. If that is true I would say there isn't a whole lot of difference if any in them as they all should have updated tools within the engine itself. Other engines such as frostbite or unreal generally have versions and every so often their tools get updated to that latest version while they are making games. Of course you can have an unreal game using the last supported version of UE3 or UE4 even though the current versions is 5. The **** show that was BF2042 showed us all what happens when your have underdeveloped tools in your engine and you try and make a game on an unstable foundation.

When thinking of dropping support for a platform you have to ask yourself why, and im not understanding why they would drop ps4 because some people want to say "well it would have RT (or another buzz word that doesn't mean a whole lot - like mesh shaders) in it if it didn't support Y platform". Also they wouldn't be working with "older graphics" they would just be using the compressed textures that they are using now. Think of it like having a low and medium preset on a computer, just because you select the new high preset it doesn't make the low or medium ones not exist.

The Ps3 had two 256MB chunks of memory to deal with and the GPU in it wasn't all that powerful. The ps4's weakness is its CPU however SE would have to come to the realization that their game just wouldn't run the new expansion of the game because of it. That is the only reason I think they would end support for the console. Just to add, the base Ps4 still has the same about of graphical power (or there abouts) as a the xbox S.

There are a lot of things that devs can do that help the game look better and don't effect performance at all. Digital Extremes (Warframe) had redone a lot of their engine much like how xiv is doing now and the system requirements didn't go up almost at all while looking much better.

Honestly you want to see the older consoles get dropped then keep pushing for CPU bound things to be put in the game and keep on yelling at SE to put RT in but I think both of those things are just a wasted effort. As long as they are getting a roi on the old consoles that is where the game will stay, or be supported anyway.

They are going to make a low preset on PC right? Plus I think you are fundamentally misunderstanding textures. They don't require (out of everything else in the game) a whole lot of CPU or GPU compute. They just require to be stored in RAM (or VRAM) which the ps4 has plenty of. So it would be much better for your case if you said "So they are just going to continue to have terrible shadow and lighting quality on ps4" and my answer would be the same, yes.

Raytracing would be amazing, but that would mean completely redoing all the lighting in the entire game, giving up on PS4 support and a bunch of other things. At this point you would just release a new game.

Partial implementation like only shadows and reflections could work, but still means giving up on PS4, which i'm all for, but i guess it's important to SE/Sony.

But aren't they already redoing the lighting now for the whole game? I think it's great they decided NOW not to drop PS4 support given Covid's longer lasting impact and the fact that so many new players joined when they did it would alienate a lot of players, but I feel there's no excuse come 2026(or later) for people not switch over to a PS5 given that's almost 6 years since it launched and for them to drop the support.

It already exists (things like floppy viera ears etc) but it seems that it doesn't update at a fixed rate independent from rendering (which is the "correct" way to do physics simulation in a game), so with a high enough framerate you don't notice it because it settles too fast. They can probably fix that without "rewriting the engine", but it may be a significant refactor (and probably not the kind of things that has a good chance of getting a very high development priority)

I already explained why they would never do this or at the very least not until they get the PC version on DX12 or Vulkan. Which they won't do any time soon.

To be fair, the shortage from when it launched ended at the end of 2023 I believe? Earlier this year? It's also being predicted that we'll see the PS6 in 2028. If people haven't swapped over by 2026, I wouldn't really blame anyone for waiting till the PS6 at that point since you'd only be getting 2 years of it being "relevant" compared to those who were lucky to get a PS5 in 2020. That's an 8 year use period compared to a 2 year one and waiting to upgrade to the PS6 will ultimately provide more mileage for the price tag.

Yes, I agree, but also they'll be supporting the PS5 when the PS6 comes out and that won't ever go away ever, if people do choose to wait, they should still drop the support and keep the game moving foreward. By 2026 the game will be 16 years old since 1.0!!! 13 years old since ARR! Insane...
