Inventory Space Update

One of my posts about inventory management got a lot of attention, and while some were talking about the spaghetti code, others were simply saying "fix your hoarding problem." Which is fair! I have actually cleaned up a lot of my inventory, but still have stuff I'm not sure about.

I have made it a personal goal to not buy many things off the market board for my character. Mainly because I'm saving every dime I get for a large house whenever the next housing district drops in 10 years. I say this because I don't like to toss things only to later need to grab it from the MB. I think it would be a good idea to share what I have in my retainers, to get feedback of stuff I will never need to use.

In my first retainer I'm holding everything that's "special." These are things like mats for relics. I have been passively gathering what I can with seals and poetics. I also like collecting them as a batch, so I will get 4 bombard cores for every relic weapon that requires it all at once. What I have now adds up to about 2 and a half rows specifically for relic stuff. I'm very unaware of Eureka and Bozja relics, so I don't know how much more materials I will be hoarding for those in the future. I also am working on getting every Soul of [insert crafter here]. I haven't used these yet, and don't know what they do nor do I know if I need to get one for all of my crafters. You can't keep them all in your soul crystal thing because there's not enough room, so any advice would be appreciated. It's also holding housing items you get through the msq which takes about half an inventory page. I'm holding several ARR materia because I know ARR relics need them. I have a little less than half a page of gathering and crafting low tier materia. I don't know anything about penta melding, or crafter/gatherer melding in general, so if I can get rid of literally all of this tell me. The last bit is faded orchestrion rolls. I just have a lot from extremes and alliance raids. I figure when I start leveling crafters again getting rid of these will be pretty easy so I've kept them.

My second retainer is the one that's really clogged up. I have crafting mats for level 50 in there waiting until I go back. I'm hoping it clears up more once I get through the... star crafts? Or whatever you call them. The mats I have take up 3 entire pages. I have so much because I'm trying to craft everything as I level instead of using leves or the restoration. The last page is full of seeds. I am not in an FC, out of choice, and don't have an apartment (i don't even know if you can garden there) and all of these seeds are ARR seeds as that's when I paused crafting and gathering. Are any of these worth while or can I get rid of all of them?

My personal inventory is very clean so when I do go back to crafters/gatherers my inventory is open to get everything for logs and so I can take everything from my retainers and mass craft. My saddlebag is full of dyes.

I would like a separate bag for fishing bait. Otherwise I don't have a lot of problems with inventory

ANd I use it for that but it would be nice since we already have the seperate thing in the fisherman skill that shows a much smaller bag with the bait we have in our regular inventory if that became say an item we could put in our regular inventory that we could place the same limited amount of bait in. 1 inventory space used (for the bag) rather than multiple.

I urgently need an inventory twice as large, which would easily allow for several simultaneous projects with my craftsmen and collectors.

My organization...

Inventory: essential item currencies such as Giza Leaf, Projection Crystals, buff food, items for current crafter project, empty slots for gathering and drops.

Chocobo bag: Drops from item currencies in dungeons and trials

Assistant 1: Materia, Demimateria, books for crafters and collectors

Assistant 2: Valuable equipment that does not fit in the projection chamber and treasure cabinet.

Assistants 3 to 5: Materials for several projects with craftsmen and collectors

Tidying up requires expert knowledge that beginners in particular do not have. It took me years to recognize what was superfluous.

Wizards could help here: Materials from older content that are item currencies (trials from Alexander or from difficult content). Wizards could also check which items are currently very cheap on the market that can be deleted from the inventory and the helpers.

Inventory issues in 2024 is rather ridiculous. We should have far more room than we currently do. It's inexcusable really. We've only 1 character for the most part too!

The issue exists because they make profit selling attendants, which is rather disgusting.

Having caught everything, I keep on hand exactly two types of bait. (versatile lure and metal spinner)

I likewise have a one retainer holding onto materia + relic items. First of all, you shouldn't be keeping all those crafter souls... actually I don't even know if they allow those to remain useful. You're only ever supposed to be allowed to have 3 crafters designated as specialists, and if you ever need to change that, you need to trade in the designated soul with a separate stackable item to swap specialist. The stackable item is all you ever need (and that rarely), just make things specialist and stop holding onto whatever you have in regards to that.
Materia: Grade 1-3 combat materia are good for ARR relics. Grade 4 can be nice for that, but will often be unnecessary (unless you're trying to give relics "good" stats, but there is zero point to that at this time). Sell/trash all of your gathering/crafting materia. These are only useful at "endgame" stages, and only for the highest tier hardest items. Most players will find no use or value from them. And even if you do find you need/want them, they are far, far easier to reacquire with scrips you can get in abundance.
Faded scrolls can start piling up, definitely worth getting to those eventually if you feel more inventory crunch. But it is a pain getting to them as soon as you get them, so having room to stash a few is nice. Just don't go stashing too many copies, or holding onto ones for scrolls you've already made; very few are really worth selling at all.

Sell all your seeds. Especially if you're just holding onto whatever you gathered, it's clearly easy to gather them. Only a handful are likely of any real use/value, and only if you're actually gardening. Apartments can't do much fancy with that anyway, the important stuff is all garden bed cross breeding.

Your crafting mats are probably your biggest problem, especially if you're going with the approach of wanting to craft everything in the crafting log. Your inventory is going to suffer for this, and for no good reason. Check marks and achievements, all so you're left with piles of items nobody wants. You either realize crafting everything is a bad idea and only keep materials for crafts you might actually use (minions, bardings, Extreme trial weapons), or you decide you're going to dedicate to completing the crafting log, and hopefully recognize you are almost certainly underestimating the undertaking.

Eventually, you're probably going to have to start asking yourself if you want to buy one extra retainer to start storing all of your raid tokens, as it very much sounds like you'll end up trying to hold onto all of them. I did. One extra retainer isn't too burdensome, personally. I don't think I could possibly find enough use to justify more than that, tho.

we dont need more space. but i guess its easier to complain about it than to learn how to manage it and how to differentiate between stuff you need and dont need. pr to finish big projects before starting another one.

i guess it would make sense to at least turn all those many tokens into actual currencies, but again, most will never be used anyway sitting in your inventory til they close the servers

if its something inventory related i'd rather have the making a collection/catalogue/wardrobe work. which would also help with spacemanagement and they wouldnt need to give as tgose 800 slots in the glsm dresser anymore

As much as I support additional inventory space (a bait bag or dye bag at the very least) Sadly I just don't see it happening. I know they expanded it from HW -> SB, but the fact that they sell extra space in the form of hiring extra retainers with real money and people support that and use it essentially ensures this likely will never happen.

It's the same issue with housing. Why implement private instanced housing when you can squeeze people to stay subscribed to keep their homes? SE sees real money from these services and won't implement any solutions for this exact reason.

Double the inventory at last, developers at Square Enix. Cry and puke because it's so hard. End of my discussion. Finally listen to the wishes of your customers!

Inventory issues stem from redundant granularity in crafting/trading systems. You don't need 50 types of wood, stone, fruits, birds, fish, and so on in the earlygame which I remind you is being completely blazed through via quests and challenges. You get the same issue with some raids too, Alexander drops a huge amount of different resources for equipment that is already redundant by the time you end up doing the quest.

That said, crafting materials should be utterly segregated from the main inventory. I'm done playing inventory tetris, limited inventory is for survival games, not MMORPGs.

Okay this might not help you much, but here's how I think about it after a few years as someone who really was super into the 'what if I need it later' mentality.

Price check it. For me any item that's less than 200gil is not worth keeping, chances are these items are readily available and won't 'run out', the same could be said about every single regular crafting material (that's not timed). Fishing can be abit tricky as well.

Low level materia are worth keeping if you plan to do ARR relics, it requires you to meld alot of low level combat materia and some of them can be like 2k+ ea which is alot, they're not readily available since they are a result of extraction on low level gear.

Dyes, are all worthless with the exception of jet black and pure white which go for a high price.

Relic items, worth keeping but remember if you're going to do all the weapons, expect running into inventory/storage issues...but since you're limited by poetics, I'd say the storage issue is maybe worth it (for me)

Faded Orchestrion, it depends really, chances are, come next expansion, people will be running these trials unsync and they'll become worthless for the most part. Do you want to sell orchestrions? If so, keep them and use specialist on Alchemist.

Souls for crafters, I think you can only get specialist for two crafters at once, it's really niche imo? I only have specialist on CUL/ALC, the soul is fairly easy to get as well, I think a couple hundred scrips? 300? Or so.

I think at the end of the day, it's up to you to decide what's worth it or not. I personally only keep mats for stuff that I know am going to craft and sell the rest. I keep materia around because I like sorting them and they look pretty. I personally hired 2 extra retainers because I didn't want to pick and choose, the storage from 4 of them is plenty and I hardly even use the storage of the last two.

I don't think we'll get more space/storage/material/crafting bags so long as retainers are being sold as a service tho

While I can see your point, what about the people who already have the maximum allowed number of retainers? I’m not there yet, but close! Could I cut back? Oh I’m sure… do I want to have to grind for any of this stuff again? No. If I like it enough to keep and it’s an RNG drop, it’s staying. I only get rid of things I can easily buy again.

I like the suggestion of putting the bait in a special section in the inventory… I have never seen the key items tab go beyond 3 rows… all that space and I can’t use it. I only use about 10 baits anyway, the ones for ocean fishing and versatile lures. But that could change if I ever try to get the big fish.

Another idea would to be to add a dye tab to the glam dresser, so you have dedicated storage for them, and don’t have to carry them around all the time.

I’d also like to see personal houses get their own storage chest like the FC chest. Or maybe it could be a wall safe, since they made a housing item that looks like one. Keep it as a wall mount item, just add the FC chest UI to it.

That's going to be another $$$ retainer allowed $$$ plus tip every month.

If you were one of the incoming players you accumulated stuff fast, stuff that wasn't that easy to get rid of in a way that wasn't going to force you to lose progress. There's also a very low market selling limit. 20 per retainer doesn't even begin to handle it if you're trying to put stuff on to the market instead of just selling the vendors. This on top of the fact that your retainers are bringing back stuff, too.

Also, if you're a newer player trying to catch up one of the more efficient ways to do that is making sure you're getting double or triple credit for stuff by having several things started that could overlap. Relics have a lot of overlap potential. Right now the Yo-kai Watch event overlaps with ARR, HW, and ShB relics. Getting credit for multiple things simultaneously is a great way to reduce the feeling of grind.

There's also storage and market pressure if you're a crafter. The limited number of market spaces meaning you may need to sit on some stuff that you crafted is the market tanks suddenly or take a massive loss. There's also issues if the amount of something you want isn't available and instead you have 20 extra.

I find the bigger problem to be limited market selling. It's entirely possible they did that to keep the market stable, but I suspect its a performance consideration instead.

Right now the ratios are off where we're getting stuff faster than we can get rid of it barring taking, sometimes, large losses. We either need more market capacity, better storage, or reduced grind so that projects can finish faster. The current status quo isn't maintainable.

OP, what on earth are you hoarding?

Honestly my biggest hoarding issues are crafting mats, seeds, bait, and faded orchestrion rolls. Since I posted though, I've decided to get rid of all my seeds and bait minus versatile lures (thanks to the elezen in my comments), but I intend on keeping the faded rolls since I know I'm going to level alchemist soon (once I finish endwalker I plan on going back and leveling all crafters and gatherers). The same elezen also said that crafting everything is a bit bonkers and that I'm underestimating the undertaking, but mmos are supposed to be about the grind. All the mats I currently have are mats for the star level 50 crafts. I wasn't able to use them because my crafters didn't have high enough stats, which is why I put my crafters on pause. At least right now, if I never started crafting I wouldn't really have that much of an inventory issue. My issues with dye, materia, and other things stem from crafting mats taking up so much of my inventory. I can see how things change when you don't want to craft everything and are just speed leveling, or have already crafted everything and sit at endwalker with no or very few mats waiting for DT.

At the moment I'm only crafting each of the level based crafts. I'm not doing the special or master recipes probably until I've finished all the level based stuff. My goal to craft everything is not something I intend to sit down and really grind out, but rather do over a period of years. Do keep in mind that I KNOW what I'm doing is a lot of work for literally no other reason than to see yellow checkmarks, but I'm aware of the work needed and I'm not underestimating anything. While leveling to 90 I prefer to craft everything I can in the level based recipes even if they're useless for me and don't sell for much. I've done that through ARR and don't want to stop now. The mats I have currently would've been used up, but my crafters didn't have high enough stats to craft. I'm well aware my inventory will suffer for wanting to craft everything, but I also feel like it shouldn't be as much of an issue as it currently is. If I never crafted or gathered I would have a pretty clean and neat inventory for both myself and my retainers. I'm being punished for wanting to be more self sufficient :(

Went through my stuff and came away with a rough count, though I'm sure I missed stuff. Some of it could be shed, but a lot of it is just the natural end result of starting things and breaking up the grind so it's not quite so oppressive. I'm currently maxed selling on the market where I'm:

1) vendoring anything that would generate less than 100gil over vendoring
2) priced-adjusting daily to be lowest on market, more often feels jerkish
3) keeping at least some slots continuously moving

So, you see a big empty inventory space, and say, "I want a separate big empty inventory space"? For the majority of players, a "bait bag" would be just as empty as they think their key items are, and they'd be complaining all the same. "All this empty space, why can't I use it for [something else].

More importantly, this comes up all the damn time, Key Items "inventory" isn't actual inventory space. You see more empty space because you (probably) have your inventory on expanded display. Reduce your display to normal and you'll see all that "space" just disappear. Key Items don't take up any inventory space, they're just quest markers.

To be clear, I don't carry any more bait, because I've gone through the grind of catching all the fish. Versatile lures are always handy for casually leveling, checking fishing spots, lazily catching minor-importance (food related fish), and metal spinner is always the best for any custom delivery fish.

But for actually specifically targeting fish, for trying to catch big fish and complete fishing log, for basically doing anything but lazily casting and hooking, specific baits are more useful.

If you don't plan to hunt big fish, you don't need any more bait. If you do plan to hunt big fish, you'll need a lot of bait, but pretty much all of the bait is self-contained to each expansion (i.e. catching all HW fish means you'll never really need HW bait again). ARR just looks like it's overwhelming with bait because it covers a much broader level range (and many more zones), much like many other materials. But, again, if you catch all the ARR fish, you don't need all the ARR bait.

Anyone holding onto enough bait to think they need a "bait bag" is fishing slowly/inefficiently enough that they very likely don't need to be holding nearly as much bait as they think.

A little confused as to why people are actively against adding more space regardless of where it is added. I manage my inventory just fine without the need to hire extra retainers. I craft and fish and achievement hunt so I accumulate a lot of things but it's never felt unmanageable. Still, I wouldn't complain if they added more, that's a weird take to have. More space is good for all even if you aren't using it. A lot of other MMOs don't have such a restriction on space and storage. But the fact that Square monetized it pretty much ensures these additions are very unlikely.

Disregarding old content and completionism, the only time the capacity needs increasing is when the number of space allocated can no longer sustain what the game requires. Instead of asking for more inventory space, a wiser allocation of and deallocation of these resources needs to be of greater priority than a band aid solution of more space allocation

Looking through various people's examples they are all full of "project mismanagement" items. If you aren't doing a relic/glam/achievement now, you don't need it. Also, if you haven't leveled crafters then the likelihood of you needing ANY obscure crafting mats in the next 12 months is vanishingly small. The reality is a lot of these items are actually pretty easy to farm once you ACTUALLY decide to do the thing that needs them. Just get rid of them, and during that break between 9.6 and 10.0 when you actually decide to do XYZ, farm them then.

Mao agrees. Mao always wonderings why some peoples so adamants against QoL suggestions. Seems silly to Mao. For record, is other games whats has much more advanced storage systems. GW2 for examples, has specific section of character bank vault whats has expandable slots for every single crafting mat in game. Game also allows characters to do the craftings without has to withdraw mats from bank. Mats automatically withdrawn as crafting proceeds. GW2 also keeps database attached to character of all gears and dyes encountered by character. Is no need for storage of gears or dyes for glams. All storage types, whether bank or backspacks, also expandables. Because of this, as game (GW2) expands with more expansions, is no bigs hardship on players. Mao wishings FFXIV was little bits more likes this.

I just want a damn personnal chest. I love this game, I really do, but if there's one thing I've always wondered "why?" about, it's the storage mode.

Why servants, when the chest serves its purpose perfectly and is the universal language of mmorpg? It's... It's as anti-ergonomic as you can get, who thought of it in the first place?

It would be nice if we could get a third free retainer (and I'd be fine if it had some sort of limitation like not being able to sell on the market board) since the amount of stuff increases with every new expansion. I actually want the whole retainer system reworked to where the retainers just turn into a thing that are purely for sending on ventures and selling, and you can create a new main retainer called an "accountant" where they act as one giant inventory space (that grows depending on the amount of retainers you have) and anything you sell gets added to the accountant's gil storage. It's dumb that we gotta dig through different inventories, we obviously have item search but it's still a bit ridiculous.

I also really want dye storage added to the glamour dresser so I can dump all of it into there and easily use it, it would also be less annoying having to run to my dresser and retainer bell to dig out the dye I want (like half my retainer's inventory is dedicated to dyes, I could do without some of the dyes that I can buy from a vendor but I like making new glamour a lot).

Also before anyone lectures me, I've went over my storage like 10 times over and it's mostly glamour that would be a pain to get back, furniture, materials I do want to use, and dyes. I agree with others in the thread, why argue about more QoL that literally benefits everyone? If you pay for a third retainer now, if they add a new free one you won't have to pay for that one anymore.

I barely use the first page of my Inventory never mind all 4 pages. The only real time those fill is when I'm levelling a crafter or undertaking a crafting / relic project, and even then once it's done the stuff gets the flick.

I can understand why people want more, glamours especially, I don't care for glamours and have used the same ones for years. However the biggest thing they should do is introduce a glamour log so you dont need to hoard all the items. This in itself would reduce massive item bloat.

Get item, use glamour prism to add it to glamour log and you're done with that item for ever. When you want to glamour click your item, open the Glamour Log and bam you're done. It's really not that hard.

They’re empty slots just like other inventory slots, just unusable. My Wondrous Tales goes there, my anima glass, any bits and bobs you have to deliver for quests/fates and hunt bills. But I could take every available hunt bill and still have half a tab of space left over, to say nothing of the other side - in expanded view, yes - that has a whole tab of empty squares that have literally never been used for anything.

My strong suspicion is that retainers are just modeled after personal inventory and trade between them uses the same underlying trade logic as it does for players.

They're essentially summoning a player object for you to trade with without staging step of adding to the trade screen

There are a lot of items that should be currency / key items.

Any item needed for relic and is untradable should be a key items.
The limit of key items should be increased.
All the different types of bozjan coins, Pazuzu's feather and items like, Memory of dying.

Sadly I don't think this will change any time soon. I pay for one extra retrainer. With more invantory space People would have no need for 8.

Now fore $2 a month, I would gladly pay for a 2x chocobo saddlebab, over a retainer.

I 100% agree that there is an inventory problem, but I disagree that the solution is "more inventory space". As anyone who has ever gained a fresh new grid of inventory space — whether via the discovery of their Saddlebag, the purchase of a new retainer, etc — can attest, having more inventory slots only temporarily solves the issue. In time, those slots fill up as well.

Thus, a far more effective solution would be to find out why there are so many items players are hesitant to get rid of and (where possible) alter game systems to alleviate these issues.

A few examples that readily jump to mind:

• There are plenty of clothes that are expensive.
• There are plenty of clothes that are time-consuming to get to drop from a dungeon.
• There are dozens of items for relic quest steps that occupy normal (non-quest) inventory slots.
• There are plenty of tokens from raids/Extremes that many players can't easily replace if they don't have friends/FC's/etc to help them quickly farm new ones on-demand.

The commonality between all of the above is that if you don't hold onto it, there will be a cost to replacing it when you want it. So the game incentivizes you to hold onto it.

But there are numerous solutions to all of these issues. Put together a Wardrobe system like WoW (ie - the Armoire for every wearable). Consolidate the number of different types of items needed for relic quests (ie - do we truly need an inventory slot for green memories and blue memories and red memories, etc), or better yet, make them quest items that live in the quest inventory. Have tokens from raids get treated like tokens from Tribes. Or something else; there are plenty of ways to reduce the amount of items that demand your space.

The point is, inventory has the issues it does because there are so many items that players quite reasonably feel pressured to hold onto. If you find out why that is and can alleviate those pressures, that's the most effective and long-term way to mitigate inventory problems.

If the game adds "more inventory tables" I am sure we will not obtain the desired effect, because the "garbage" will be more difficult to locate and thrown away/sold, and this is exactly what I miss.
It also seems to me that the work done between shadowbringer and endwalker has been forgotten: SE removed the "HQ crafting items" (+rebalancing the difficulty of the recipes), effectively eliminating many gathering items that took up inventory space.
What I'd like to see is some visual indicator of the difficulty of obtaining a certain item, white-green-pink-blue-yellow, AND a more rational sorting.

What matters is not the size but how it is used.

I would also like better inventory. `/isearch` is critical, but not that great. A lot of the information that I need to make decisions is multiple clicks. Other games have definitely done it better (e.g., WoW, GW2).

I appreciated the Zodiac Glass and Anima Glass as UIs for seeing progress on things and I wonder if SB, ShB, and EW could have had similar experiences. It would have also been nice if they were unified into one relic UI so that you could see the progress of each relic for each job for each expansion in one interface. That would be my dream. It could even store counters for progress towards relics including those key items getting them out of your inventory. Light was just a stored number somewhere between 0 and 2000. Why not apply that towards memories as well. If I had to take a guess it's because that memory is unretrievable whereas items in inventories are. Once gone, they're no longer taking up space in the data center. A quick look shows about 30M characters. So, each additional piece of information is at least 32MB times replication for the current customer base.

So, the big reason for specialized storage is specialized UI to make using that storage better.

A tacklebox could be filterable to your current zone or expansion.
The glamour stuff has been well-covered and there are excellent examples already.
A crafting box could be filterable to an expansion or star-level for *-**** ingredients.
Things specific to a system should stay with the UI for that system and not require space (see above discussion on relics).
A toy box (e.g., WoW) is also a good idea for all the little effects we want to do. I would love to be able to use those, but I cannot justify the space.

I also agree that this game has an inventory problem, but just doubling the amount of inventory is just gonna be a band-aid because this game plans to be an mmo that runs for 10 more years, which means at least 3-4 more expansions worth of crafting materials, tokens, fishing bait, furniture, glam rewards etc. that will just keep on decimating your inventory.

The real solution is to section things off into their own type of inventories.. tokens stored in a better collectable window, bait in their own bait inventory, crafting material totally sectioned off into their own inventory, materia in its own storage.. and well, glam in general just needs a massive overhaul.

If they don't do that, then 10 years from now this same post will just show up complaining about inventory space.

They’re empty slots just like other inventory slots, just unusable. My Wondrous Tales goes there, my anima glass, any bits and bobs you have to deliver for quests/fates and hunt bills. But I could take every available hunt bill and still have half a tab of space left over, to say nothing of the other side - in expanded view, yes - that has a whole tab of empty squares that have literally never been used for anything.

Companion app only offers extra inventory space if you pay the subscription.. and unless I'm mistaken, for the cost of the companion app subscription, you could just pay for two retainers. Either way, not free.

And no, they are not unusable inventory slots. They literally are not designated inventory slots, there's literally no way for them to be made into usable inventory slots. The devs have been over this before because this always comes up. The "empty space" is just your display being misleading.

Inventory space is like roads: People will always find a way to use all the available capacity.

As long as people have to pick and choose how to fill that space — whether it be general purpose, dedicated to baits, dedicated to crafting materials, etc. — someone somewhere will eventually complain that it's not enough.
