It is 2024, why does the game still not save your settings.

Installed the game on new machine, had to go and dig up my old one to transfer the character and system settings stuff.

How hard would it be to have the game keep track of your bars/gearsets/etc. instead of doing it this clunky and impractical way.

I know this issue doesn't come up that often to people, but it does take a while if you have absolutely no backups to re-setup everything up again.

They probably do it this way to save on server traffic. That way the server is not pinging a server on a regular basis to save millions of players' settings that may or may not have been changed. The saving of settings is okay as is.

It would be nice if they called more attention to the feature or reminded people of it. That way there would not be the issue of people forgetting to do so before moving rigs, or if a PC suddenly dies.

Plan ahead next time and just move the file to a usb drive?

If you are talking about hotbars/macros and things like that, basic charcter settings then the game does. On your character selection screen just click the cog to the right of your name and say upload settings to server. When you reinstall or move to another computer just click the cog again on log in and download the same settings.

Or make up backups of your folders. Personally I do both.

As someone who regularly plays two accounts on two machines (which my spouse does as well), alternating which is on which, I can report there are issues you may not be considering, such as different screen sizes/resolutions, different input devices, different hardware capabilities and so on that could make blindly copying the config from one machine to another a nightmare.

From experience, I can tell you that going back and forth between a 3440x1440 screen on a 45" monitor and a 2560x1440 screen on a 32" monitor can be a pain, and not everyone can solve the problem by just buying a new monitor like we did.

And our primary systems have ROCCAT Tyon mice and Azeron Cyborg keypads, while our secondary systems don't (because the former is hard to find anymore and the latter is not cheap, plus desk space limits), which means we can't use the same keybindings on all our systems.

Plus the GPUs differ: we're using RTX 3070s on our main systems but much less capable GPUs on our secondaries, so grpahics setting have to differ as well.

Running on two systems, you get a good idea of what's implemented in the client as opposed to what's implemented on the server. For example, we've had to learn to be careful after switching which account is on which system to make sure the gear the character is actually wearing (which is server side) corresponds to the gearset the client thinks the character is wearing (gearsets are all client side).

they give us multiple hud layouts. I have one for my wide-screen and one for my laptop, and one for cross on each resolution. I do wish there was more automatically saved server side and no it wouldn't end life as we know it, other games do it just fine, but what we have is better options-wise than frankly I ever expected from SE.

The game provides a free cloud backup service for your character and system settings, but it’s up to you to make use of it.

Or you can do it the old clunky way.

if you are using steam it does save your settings.

so just use that to launch it instead

Oh. I was hoping this would be about how the game "forgets" your HUD settings for elements you don't use frequently, despite HUD settings being client-side.

Cuz that's still some crazy dumbass bullshit.

Honestly I personally appreciate that it's all file based and not hard synced from the server.
The reason is that I play characters in different regions (JP / NA) and I hard linked some things (hot bars settings, hud settings) but not certain things (like gear sets for example) so that whenever I change where a certain skill is placed then it syncs throughout my characters)

I mean, the devs gave us the tools to easily save our settings. Are the devs really the lazy ones in this situation?

Yep, maybe I overstepped. After all, I'm just a programmer at a video game company. Heck, I just so happen to have implemented a on online game settings saving feature in an online game some ten years ago. It was completely automated and transparent, but what do I know.

And I've been a developer for many years. I also know that every change you make on your local doesn't make it into the commit. Yet here you are saying that as soon as someone saves, it should be pushed up. Then you want diffs on that? Gonna be pretty long list. It's almost like they gave you functionality to decide WHEN you want to push things up, but what do I know.

You are a developer. You know things are very rarely simple as it sounds. I can come up with several questions that would need answered before even thinking about starting on automating this.

I'd like to see the game automatically back up my settings, but ask whether I want to restore or sync them.

It's easy to forget to use the backup options on the character selection screen, but I also might want to use different configurations for different devices and characters.

Yes, there are design issues (like what settings should remain local only?) and technical constraints and limitations specific to this game that we may not be privy of, but I would be surprised if it was anywhere near unsurmountable. I'd be more inclined to believe that it was never done for lack of sufficient priority given to the feature.

I agree 100% it could be done. I would also agree this would more than likely be a low priority, especially since we've seen other actual game play effecting issues take so long to resolve.
