Google or Microsoft Authenticator. Which is more reliable.

I still use the SQEX software token but I know at some point SE is going to pull the plug on it all together.
Of Google and Microsoft which authenticator is going to be more reliable. I just want one that'll match the reliability I had with SQEX token.
I have a physical token on standby but I'm just not a fan of them.

Ice had no issues with the ms one and I've been using it for years.

Alternatively, to replace the SE app my spouse and I use Authy by Twilio on our iPhones and Apple Watches for 2FA for our FFXIV. We've got all four of our accounts on all four devices, so we can login to any account if any of the devices is available.

The only issue we ever had was on a cruise through the Panama canal, where the Apple Watches apparently got confused regarding what time zone we were in and generated bad codes, but the iPhones worked just fine even in that situation.

The only thing I will say is I use Google Authenticator. It works, it's fast, it's reliable. Just open the app and the codes are right there. That is literally it.

Its as fast and reliable as Google auth, but lets you make encrypted backups of your auth secrets (I had a phone die on me and believe me I'd rather have my own backups than having to go through sqex support again to get the 2fa removed)

Also being open source it is less likely to experience enshittification or to be discontinued some day (unlike Google things)

I use either, I'm using "Step Two", not sure if it's available on non-iOS devices but I like it cause it backup to my iCloud so if I change device I don't have to redo everything.

Can't comment on Microsoft's, but I have had no problems with the Google authenticator, and it was hassle-free when I last upgraded my phone.

Hi, IT guy here. MS authenticator and Google Authenticator are both good and fairly easy to use. Also using Authy as well so I can recommend all three, had no hiccups so far.

Seconding the Authy recommendation, specifically because you can transfer it to another device without disabling, getting new device set up, reenabling.
