Yeah..
I've learned to get used to it and accept it, but the system is still pretty janky. There is no reason that making, modifying and applying a portrait should be such an ordeal. If not the system complaining about certain props in the shot or not having enough of your character in the frame, it's giving you hassle with not updating and applying your portrait correctly because you forgot you used /visor on your headgear or something and it breaks the whole thing.
It's just way too convoluted. Like I said, I've adjusted to it, but it's not an excuse for how poorly implemented the feature is. They've had plenty of time to fix it at this point, and really should.
If it's not this it's them telling me my face isn't in it when it clearly is.
They need to just remove the restrictions on portraits. It didn't work at preventing "indecent" portraits, and all it does is punish the rest of us.
Unfortuately it got ruined by all the children who couldn't stop themselves from making NSFW portraits.
By the way, it works just fine with the Anima. That's how I originally came up with the portrait to begin with.

oh my thats an old gif havent seen that one in like 20 years, now i feel old
Yeah, the portrait system can be pretty fussy sometimes. Your face can be clearly visible but the game thinks it's hidden. Your face can be not visible at all, but it approves. It's Calvinball rules.
I'm surprised we didn't get Ron Swanson throwing the computer into the dumpster. That seems to be the standard now.
The community only has itself to blame for the system being a pain to work with. Originally you could do pretty much whatever you wanted, so naturally a number of people made porn portraits. Now restrictions are in place to prevent that from happening with the unfortunate side effect of instances like the OP's image.
Idk why they cant be like adventurer plate? my plate doesn't need to be updated every time i change my socks
I like how the error mentions how it could be the Weapon or an Accessory preventing you from saving the Portrait but leaves it up to you to figure it out.
I still wished i could just really opt out of them... it annoys me so much lol
Is it any different? Who really cares? You only see the adventure plate if you click on someone and look at them. You can disable portraits if you dont want to ever see anything suggestive. I just dont see how adventure plate/portrait lewdness is so so much worse than actual story themes or players glamming themselves to look as sexy as they can.
Yes.
Well adjusted people, and presumably developers of popular MMOs that don't want portaits of catgirls giving head to run them afoul of the ESRB.
"I shouldn't have to stop making juvenile porn portraits, other people should just lock themselves out of an entire feature of the game."
Grow up.
One day you'll grow out of your teens and it'll make more sense.
Oh come on. Is that the best you can do? Seriously? Making comments and assumptions about age? I'm probably older than you. Less hung up about stuff, though, it seems.
Edit - also, just as a by the by, here is the ESRB rating:
Language, Mild Blood, Sexual Themes, Use of Alcohol, Violence
Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB
Short of mods, there's nothing explicit that players can do with their portraits. Just suggestive.
Sure bud.
Totally.
But... that thing is obviously just a weapon handle or something in reality, though. It's the dictionary definition of "suggestive." Our characters aren't anatomically accurate, and we literally can't get naked, so it's impossible to have "explicit" portraits.
It also seems to be a demonstration of the futility of portrait restrictions, when something like this is allowed but OP's portrait isn't. I seem to recall seeing that one pretty early on, maybe before the restrictions were enacted, but I bet it still probably works today.
The go to solution in FF14 for a player potentially abusing something is simply to restrict everyone so abuse isn't possible, instead of punishing players that can't play nice.
Once I noticed it for the first time, I started seeing it everywhere in how they design things that are put into the game.
But yeah the portrait system is a mess still after half a year of it being in the game, baffling to me.
What cracks me up is the puritans and pearl clutchers who are so worried about sexuality and expressions of sexuality, but they are generally perfectly fine with violence and expressions of violence. Not to mention the pure hypocrisy of having sexually suggestive themes and outright stuff of SA and rape in the game. But noooooo, players having lewd adventure plates is a step too far. The horror.
I don't know what you mean, FFXIV is just a wholesome children's game.
The point was that their attempt to play it off as "oh well they're just suggesting the act so it doesn't count," as if there's any other way to interpret a dude clearly designed to be jerking off, is disingenuous.
It was from before they dropped the hammer. Portraits like that are why OP is now dealing with a difficult system.
Ah yes, the puritan accusation and whataboutism. Indeed, anyone who doesn't jump for joy at terminally horny people shoving their unhinged behavior in everyone's face, in a game rated for 13-year-olds and up, must be a puritan.
Anyone with a functioning frontal lobe can understand the difference. Either you're making excuses to justify your own unsavory behavior to yourself or the concept is actually beyond you. Either way, I don't see much point in continuing this circular discussion on a settled matter. The lewd portraits are banned, and rightfully so.

I don't mind those camera restrictions...
But please let me have an 'universal portrait' that doesn't require maintenance when you swap things. Idk why that's not possible when it's actually a feature from the Adventurer's Plate - the picture there remains regardless of job or equipment swap.
Lol you keep clutching those pearls sweetheart. All you want to do is shout down anyone opposed to your view and make assumptions and cast aspertions. Good discussion.
Give the community a way to express themselves and eventually someone will draw a dick. It is just the way of life, unfortunately.
The only thing people can do is moderate this stuff properly and quickly (which is already happenning thankfully)
I think that "blame the community that we can't have nice things" is a bit incorrect. From the very beginning of Adventurer Plates people were predicting that someone is gonna post their character in 2B bottoms with their back towards the camera. And, as was shown in that screen you linked, people definetly went above and beyond in terms of degeneracy. It was just bound to happen, because a certain portion of the people just can't help themselves. Once again, proper moderation and strict rules are the way. But SE, in their usual fashion, overcorrected this and now we encounter silly problems like the OP had.
Realistically, what SE could've done, is to unstuck their heads from their arses and do some proper work on the Portrait system. It is absolutely silly how toggling your weapon/hat/visor on and off breaks the portrait completely. Freaking melding materia into your gear breaks the portrait. The actual F...?
And also adjust the camera restrictions to work properly so the system doesn't block Portrait when there are clearly nothing wrong (just like OP).
i prefer guild cards in monster hunter tbh. you can show off multiple titles, it shows your achievments more clearly and you can see all of your character in more detail. maybe 14 could try to make more effort for protraits to be worth checking. imagine if you could send portraits to your duty mates and they could show up on your island like Hunters for hire show up in MH.
No no, like... I wouldn't mind the restriction either if it made sense. My face is perfectly visible and it's still calling it an "obstruction" but then it works just fine with the Anima?
So then I just moved it a bit... and now it's fine??

What annoys me it's that the restriction feels totally arbitrary instead of consistent. As long as the face is visible, that should be enough.
Don't stab the cameraman, I guess.
I stopped doing portraits because everytime I equiped something new, my portrait would go back to default and I would have to do it again.
There are definitely a lot of oddities in the new system. Through a lot of experimentation I discovered the following:
-If the update gearset button, is lit (meaning unsaved), it breaks the portrait:
https://i.imgur.com/MtgK9sc.png
-Even if the gearset IS updated, you must save the portrait after it IS updated in order to apply the portrait.
-If the gearset is tied to a glamour plate, the gearset MUST match the glamour plate exactly in order for the portrait to be applied. If you remove a glamour-plate link to a job, this prevents it from breaking and as long as you click update on the gear set and save on the new portrait, it will not break.
https://i.imgur.com/b6Sbm3o.png
-If you equip a new set of gear, then apply the associated glamour plate, and then hit 'Update Gear Set' this entirely breaks the portrait entirely. The only way to fix this is to alter the portrait in some way and save the new portrait (i.e. go into portrait settings, maybe alter the light or angle by a value of 1, and save the portrait again)
-Interestingly enough, if you equip a new set of gear, then update the gear set, switch to another gearset, then switch back to let the glamour auto-apply, it doesn't break the system.
Any way you cut it, the system is REALLY janky though and definitely needs bugs hammered out.
I hate the portrait system so much it's unbelievable.
Glams, materia, class/jobs... Having to manually save it when you make minute changes, thinking you saved it but then there's an issue with your gear set... just, good lord it's rough at times. Drives me up the wall. I actually hate that Square introduced it at this point. I really liked the "beta" of it where it was just the adventurer plate... but idk. It just kinda sucks now.
Shouldn't have even given us the option to position the camera for portraits at this point since there's so few actual angles/positions that it doesn't complain about anymore.
