How would you like an open world PvP zone?

A lot of older MMOs have open world PvP. This idea on its own wouldn't work very well in 14 for about a dozen different reasons.
BUT! What about a dedicated zone for open world PvP? Imagine it works sorta like eureka. This zone has tons of things to do and quests and rewards etc. but you have access to your pvp kit and every now and then an event will kick off that grants extra rewards for pvping. Maybe even you can challenge other players to duals. Perhaps the zone gives armor and accessories that boost your stats when dueling other players. Thoughts?

I think you're suggesting it'd have to be instanced but accessible in a different way to the wolves' den? I'd be in favor of it.

Open world PvP would not fit well into FFXIV, and its sensitive fragile community that can barely handle PvP as it is. Don't mistake me as saying I wouldn't like such a zone. I'm toxic and I'd love to have a zone like this implemented for my own amusement.

WoW open world PvP worked for a variety of reasons, mainly that it was built around faction based PvP from the start. XIV has badly implemented PvP, bad netcode, and devs who don't understand PvP at a fundamental level and refuse to acknowledge the communities most basic concerns. The zone just wouldn't work without a serious PvP dev team being hired on.

Only and only if the duels are like in wolfsden pier: you can decline always.

I'm not interested in getting killed randomly when i try to do literally anything else.

That's not what I would expect in an instanced zone. I'd expect that by entering, you've agreed to PvP, and can only leave if you aren't engaged in PvP.
You might see a message upon entry along the lines of " this is an OW PvP zone. By clicking "Yes" you agree to participate in PvP. You cannot leave the zone while engaged in PvP"

In some games (not all) that are designed with OW PvP in mind, you can set a flag for PvP. In others, there is no such thing, everyone is fair game, however there may be some safe (no PvP) zones.

In other words, while in that zone

A zone where you could join a faction and then go out and fight PvE mobs for loot you have to carry back to base but can be jumped on by another faction trying to steal your goods would be really fun. Or capturing and holding forts like in DAOC or GW2's WvW mode or WoW's Wintergrasp/Alterac Valley maps. Though as Archeron said, Square would need to become serious about PvP.

Open world pvp would be amazing, alas as shown by some of the replies above, MMO players are pathologically unable to comprehend the whole concept and always end up thinking that emergent, spontaneous pvp constitutes griefing.

I would love this D: Aion had that zone with the forts just do something simialar but make it noticeable that you are flagging for pvp if you enter this area.

I don't think this is a playerbase that would be happy with a zone being dedicated to open world PvP. This is a game where people queue into PvP and then entirely avoid fighting anyone after all.

Part of the appeal is that it may separate those who enjoy PvP from those who simply do all the daily roulettes.

I don't think Square Enix would be ballsy enough to do this as it is. The best we've got for the time being is the Wolves Den.

Though I would like to see an expansion to the Wolves Den. Would be fun to have a "Gurubashi Arena" style area in the wolves den you can just jump into and gank people in. Or get ganked in. Maybe throw a tomestone prize in the middle of it every few hours to spice things up. Oh, and if anyone replies to me saying "But its toxic! People will be big meanies! They'll gang up on people!" What ever stopped you from forming up a group yourself to go smash some arrogant clowns? Big ego's will get checked eventually, and when they do it's all the more satisfying.

But I don't want the game to force me into PvP that I have no desire to engage in by making the PvP zone a wall for quests or gathering resources. Maybe it could be a place to gather stuff that you could make into dedicated PvP gear?

What's wrong with PvP providing alternative gear options, if only for current tier HQ crafted equivalents? You aren't forced into it as crafted still has pentamelding and it would give options.

Aside from your comment, I am genuinely surprised how most people cannot imagine a dedicated pvp zone without jumping to immediate ptsd experiences from WoW story ganking.

I for one would enjoy a Eureka-like in its own ecosystem where banding with people would give you better chances of survival. Can also have objectives and areas to capture. But so far the ability collection is too shallow for making it interesting.

SE really boxed themselves in to a corner where implementing a open/large(r) scale instance with pvp would be difficult and messy. Mostly due to the PvP actions being completely different from the PvE ones.
I think the best chance of such ever occurring would be if it were implemented as an upcoming field operation. Provide two instances where one's narrative is focused on exploration(pve) while the other on combat(pvp).

Open world PVP zone outside of a Instanced area like Bozja or etc would only end up doing more damage than good. You'd have people in groups going around killing just about anyone who might be doing gathering, treasure maps, side questing, main story questing etc. It's the grim reality, give people the tools they will take advantage/exploit the means. Having a pvp zone be a instanced area would be better suited given players are given the warning "This is a pvp Zone" before adventuring in it.

Warmode problem solved only run into pvp players in the world.

Open PvP zone? Probably not right this moment. I'd rather the first step being able to duel out in the world, given there's an absolute catalog of awesome locations that you only see once for a side quest. Make that so you can opt out of being harassed with requests and you're golden.

I imagine that'd require unique values for damage reduction and potency. Five people are hard-pressed to kill a lone Paladin in FL, for example. A one-on-one duel with those parameters would be like two polar bears blapping each other with overcooked linguine.

I mean in no reality would it ever take after Frontline values but yes, there'd need to be a rule or two in place and a method to end the duel if it's a never-ending matchup.

Might work. The usual problem with open-world dueling is that the person offering the duel usually does so because they see they have an edge, then the challenged player draws the same conclusion and declines it. That said, the odd battle would definitely add a bit of spice when one is wandering around looking for an NPCs lost goat.

As someone who experienced the disaster that was Warhammer...the devs should never be stupid enough to waste time on open world PVP, it's the absolute worst thing in gaming ever.

If you genuinely like the idea of open world PVP, it's a dream that nobody has ever succeeded at. How it works in practice is horrible and has a long list of problems that I could go off on. So at best, FFXIV should wait for somebody to invent good open world PVP then copy it, but it will probably never happen in this kind of game, it'd have to be a totally different sort of game or something because it has all been tried before and it doesn't work in practice, it's really terrible.

I really feel that some people have PTSD, as soon as the phrase "open world PVP" is in front of them, the emotional trauma kicks in and prevents further discussion. So unfortunately the distinction between a small, optional zone and a forced, open-world PvP becomes irrelevant.

That's not intended as any insult, I just see that in those cases it's rather difficult to convince someone. However I do feel that a zone is a very reasonable goal for exactly that reason, someone like Waalter like very unlikely to be affected by a zone since he/she could just avoid it, and the effort spent on it would be far less than OW PvP.

It'd be pretty cool if in the future, they decided to let you choose to be a WoL or WoD to keep the balance and have open world pvp with that premise.

I don't think that pvp in FF can ever feel decent with the lack of CC, and that massive gcd/delay. People already quit after rank 25 rewards because it's just not fun to play.

Full support. If SE is in the mood to try something truly different, open world pvp sounds like a great outlet. I agree it should be only one zone, but one that could be easily accessible without having to go out of your way to access it.
