Sharing Estates With Alt Characters

Many changes have rolled out to housing over the years, most of them positive ones! Initially, limiting player housing to one per character was a great change for the community, as was limiting housing to one per world per service account...

BUT

The inability to share your estate with yourself on an alt, or share an alt's estate with your main is a huge drawback considering the changes made. If you own a house on character A, but want to show the house to friends or hang out at it on character B, you have to log out of character B, meet that friend on character A so they can add that character, log out of character A, log back in on character B and then RUN all the way to your own house while your friend teleports there easily and is waiting for you to make the trip.

Did you get a headache reading that? I wouldn't be surprised, because I get a headache every time I have to go through this process.

Apparently long before I started playing, there was a bug people had exploited to "add their own alt" so they can share an estate with it, which SE had then patched so you couldn't do that anymore... which begs the question as to why? Clearly the ability to share an estate with your own alt...or allow your alts to teleport to housing you own on the same world on the same service account as a built in feature is something highly desired.

Why focus on patching the only way this was possible five years ago, and not put any thought into a possible solution? With how common it is for housing to be a pain point for players, and how difficult it can be to get a house on certain worlds, I just question as to why it would be a benefit to SE or the players to limit that functionality for any other reason than "it not being how SE intended for housing to be used".

That is the end of the rant portion of my post, if you are still reading thank you, because....

I am also here to offer a solution.

I am suggesting there be a "character sync" feature added to the game, where all characters on the same service account, AND on the same world are given access to an "Owned Characters" tab under the social or system section of the menu.

From this menu, you can teleport to estates owned by your other character, request to join an FC your other character is in, and send mail to your other character to more easily facilitate the transfer of items without the need of trusting the items/gil to still be there in an FC chest OR trusting another player to not run off with your items (which then leads to time wasted by GM's following up on scam reports)

In the long run, I feel these changes wouldn't only benefit the community, but would cause much less headaches for GM's and SE as a whole.

SE first addressed this issue themselves back in Stormblood. After adding the new rule that limited accounts to one personal house per world, they said they were aware that players wanted to add their alts as tenants to the house they purchased and they were going to work on a solution.

Then they went radio silent on the subject until early this expansion when it was brought up again in a Q&A. The latest response was that it has not been forgotten and they still intend to address it but they first wanted to prioritize making more houses available for those that have been unable to get one before adding QOL for those that already have a house.

It's still anyone's guess as to when they'll finally get around to fixing it. At this point, we'll have to hope it will be included with the housing updates they've already specifically mentioned for Dawntrail.

The 1 room per character is abit stiff.

*raises hand* Guilty as the way it was done (don't think it breaks TOS because its no longer possible) people would group with their main and their alt with someone else...DC their alt and login their main and send a friend request to their alt via the Party UI.

Honestly I think really if they wanted to solve a loss of resources without increasing overhead - simply restrict you to 1 house per DC and 1 FC ownership per DC.

To that extent you automatically are given full rights to ALL houses on your SA; so if I manage to land a house on Zalera; even if I am from Balmung - I can still make use of it - drastically reducing the issue of high pop servers. Furthermore and this is a bit of a ask -

+allow ALL alts to make a FC room in your FC as well as any FC you are part of. From a RP perspective it would save on the issue of IL as it would allow for stuff like bedrooms and such to be added to FCs

+require all multiple FC owners to "claim" one of their buildings and return all others to the lotto cycle - any submarines/airships and FC credits would be added to said FC (discarding the submarine limit or make it possible to buy more slots or grandfather it out)

+Put all FC chest items into the caretaker and allow for further expansion of the vault slots.

Really getting rid of the relevance of "what world your on" would go a great length to solving resource issues - as worlds are essentially just "instances" when we already have zone "instancing"

I feel that discussions like this, although full of critical feedback of the game we all love, comes from a place of us all just wanting to see FFXIV continue to improve and I hope SE knows this comes from a place of hope for the game, and not just whining ^.^

If you have anything else you'd like to add in case SE happens to read, feel free to share. I personally couldn't sit around talking in my own friend circle about these things I'd like to see improved any longer. It is basically shouting into an echo chamber unless we let our voices be heard in a place where they can do some good.

It's absolutely RIDICULOUS that we cannot share a private house with alt characters AND that there is no account storage. The only way to get around it is to create a second account, form an alt-based FC, buy an FC house and "share" it like that. And THAT is not the same thing. In this day and age... it's UNACCEPTABLE!!!

This game really needs to become more alt friendly. Otherwise...what is the point of allowing us to create so many alts?

The reason it such features take effort and if the management has no graph saying "putting time to develop this feature will bring us good revenue" then they wont approve it.

That's why blizzard will never do a token system like xiv's extremes


Their whole modus operandi is layers upon layers of RNG because they raised their players this way, and if they guaranteed them desired items like the new dragonflight legendaries after certain grind, people would unsub faster after they are done with obtaining it.

While I agree that there needs to be some tangible monetary motivation behind most game updates, there is something to be said about having less things get in the way of having fun. The more often players are having fun regarding different game features that aren't pointlessly limited (like housing) the more consecutive months a player will be subbed before unsubbing to wait for another game update. But in regards to end game grind, ya they are absolutely motivated to make it a pain to gear in order to keep players subbed longer, but I digress... This particular needed housing feature would only benefit them and cost them less money in the long run.

we need to share a house with alts and also be able to mail to alts!! way way over due.

I concur, doubly so with how aggressive they are in deleting the contents of a place (35 days, and poof, even though I have retainers 5-6 im no longer subscribed to whos inventory exists indefinitely).

The only thing I want is to be able to use 1 apartment. Thats it. I won't do a personal house again, and FC houses are a non-issue. Why my main and 2 alts are not default on each others friends list is beyond me. Just seems like lazy execution.

People shouldn't have to make their own fc to share items and Gil with alts and to share the same house. But we do have to, so I made one. It's really great to share things account wide. There is no good reason to not have this as a default feature. Alts should be automatic tenants and they should be on the moogle mail list too.

Doesn't help the housing issue as a whole when people are able to circumvent the rules. Example, there are several dozen single person FC's with housing. And the only character in the FC is one that hasn't met the requirements to even purchase a house. What people do is create FC's, use a character that has the ability to bid on housing, gets the house then has their buddy transfer leadership of that fc over to their little baby alt, and then leave the FC with just their alt in it. Presto, they now have a lvl 2 alt with its own house all to themselves. This takes up housing from people who are actually "playing by the rules". I've suggested SE should put into effect some rules for FC purchases. FC's must have and maintain a certain # in order to buy and keep certain sized housing. Minimum of 5 for a small plot, 50+ for a medium and 100+ for a large.

Honestly they should really revamp housing altogether… and I’m not even talking about my usual instanced campaign, even though I’m still a strong advocate of adding that alongside the wards.

Something I think that should be an easy ask (though I’m sure someone will let me know if I’m wrong! lol) is this: make personal housing mostly the same as FC housing. (Let’s leave aside the argument of whether or not personals should have workshops or not for now. I don’t really care either way.) But what I’m talking about first of all, is the ability to add extra apartment-sized rooms. Now alongside of that, every character on your account is automatically added as a tenant to any estate you own, as long as they’re on the same world. I think the max number is 8 characters per account at the moment? So they can all share the estate and have individual rooms, and you can set permissions so they can all interact with the property. After that, you can still have the same 2 friend tenant slots you already get in a personal, and manage their settings as well. So we’re talking about 10 rooms being able to be added to a personal estate. Then add a storage chest like the FC chest to personal estates, so all characters can trade items and gil through that; seems the easiest way to get around the trading issue. And finally, estate permissions in general. I was hopeful when I saw how Island Sanctuary managed who could visit your island, that we would get similar controls with housing. But you should be able to have toggles to either make it closed, or allow friends, FC members, party members or be totally open to all. Along with that, anyone you blacklist should automatically be unable to enter your house. I think just doing this would go a long way in making the game more alt friendly. They’d still have to fix the lack of housing supply though!

Would love if SE would consider also making more things account wide. So many other mmo's make a lot of stuff account wide, and I'm just not sure why this game is set up to almost punish you when you have to pay for more character slots (well actually not sure if that is still a thing, but I know when I first started playing there was a price difference)

While I like the spirit of the idea; there are plenty of "FC's" that are a few players as large amounts of the playerbase go on long hiatus leaving 1 or 2 members still playing the game to hold onto the house the FC earned. As someone who has been here since the beginning I've seen it first hand as FC's wither.

I would agree with sharing houses with alts provided that your restricted to 1 private home per DC.

You don't need a second account to form your own FC. You just need to get other player's characters to sign your FC petition, which you can usually do just be finding people not in an FC (and not planning to form one themselves any time soon) and asking them to sign. Then kick the signers out after the FC is approved for formation. Naturally, you'd tell them you were going to do that when asking them to sign.

Of course, having your spouse or a friend playing the game with you makes all that unnecessary: their alts can sign your FC petition, and your alts can sign there FC petition, and then after the FCs are formed you can shuffle members around as you desire.

FC house are far more convenient than personal houses, especially when you have many alts. So much so that my spouse and I just let two of our personal houses go abandoned.

I also likes to see it happen, but it has two issues.
First, in order for tenant system to work, target need to be on your friend list and you can't invite your own alt as friend.
This is the way since FF14 foundation on one character for all jobs; there isn't really need to create an alt character.
Second, whole tenant system is for you to share with others, not your alt
This is for the purpose of reduce stress on housing plot demand.
This is a wishful thinking but realistically will not happen

Am all for sharing housing with all alts you got on same account, and then you could do the removal of grandfathering as well making it max 1 house and 1 FC per DC per account.
