Targeting party members with offensive skills - Added depth, or grief city?

Now, obviously this would be a nightmare with the current targeting system, but in 2.0, how would you feel about this (outside of pvp situations of course)

Why would you ever want to target a party member with offensive abilities you ask? Well, it's a constant trope in the FF series. A member put to sleep or confused? Don't have Esuna? Well, then just whack them across the head and clear it right up! Inflicted with Zombie and don't have the cure? Cast and inflict poison upon them to create a regen effect! Have mobs with TP skills that deal damage based on current MP? Have a mage Osmose it out and cast it away (This actually seems like a rather ridiculous buff to mages, being able to take Melee MP at will, but this is just an example)

Basically, I can see a number of unique mechanics designed with this in mind, but on the other hand...being able to hit the WHM with whatever because you feel like being an ass would, well, be pretty obnoxious. Still, wanted to see how others felt about it, and I currently have nothing better to do with my time, so~

I'd love it too to be honest, always loved that part in every FF. Although I think this time ppl will just start killing themselves for te lulz or even mass-mpk :(

You should be able to gank people anywhere and steal their gold

Hmm, an interesting idea with much potential. :)

. . . though if such a thing was implemented, I think I would suddenly become much pickier about who I partied up with. :p

With a little critical thinking, we can deduce that AOE skills can be set to target only enemies or allies, avoiding that problem altogether! Yay critical thinking!

Its still not a good idea to have the ability to nuke and kill your party members. Mistakes in targeting. People being ***holes. I know what friendly fire can do. Most people won't sit there and nuke party members but your gonna meet them and it'll suck. I can think of a lot of way to be a jerk using this and only a handful of useful things. In the other FF games you had control over every char if your blm nuked your tank it was your fault however here if someone gets pissed he'll just kill everyone.

This would also fly in the face of the heart of the Final Fantasy MMOs. This is a party game, having to worry about the backlash of your black mage's AoE spells or the tank's AoE weapon skills would be very anti-party. "Oh, but FFXI had PvP" As an afterthought! And judging from this game, it's going to again be an afterthought if it is even added in the first place. No, this is a terrible idea and I would find myself dropping this game fast as can be if it is ever implemented. A sentiment I'm sure would be shared by a large number of Japanese players.

You can use Steel Cyclone in town anyway.

Btw, maybe S.E. should just open a PvP FFA friendly fire server.

Well with the OP's examples, you could make it work i think. What you would need to avoid griefing though would be;

Only usable when the mentioned condition is applied to friendly target. AKA, you can whack them with your axe only when they are under the influence of sleep debuff.

And an Accept dialog/icon meaning the reciver has the ability to accept or deny the whack. If accepted the player recived axe to head and wakes up. If denied the players head must have swayed out of the way due to a rather vicious snore spasum.

I think it would be workable if both, or atleast the latter was implimented.

If for no other reason then the previous posters are bloodthirsty animals....animals i tells ya!

Back in my day, a PLD and a THF would collaborate together to position the mob in such a way that the THF could SATA an unruly mage....

This is an idea that sounds cool in theory, but I'd be very afraid of a bad implementation. Unless heavily restricted, it could be a disaster, and then the question arises as to whether it would just be adding complexity for complexity's sake or not. Maybe adding an interface option that blocks all incoming hostile spells from friendly players, making it so you have to allow specific individuals before they can cast on you, but even then...

I would definitely like to see this put into the game. Behind a list of things, but still -- it's FF, it's unorthodox for anything but FF, and it should be loads of fun.

I can picture it now a lone warrior stood among a pile of corpses apologising to everyone for not realising his own strength.

That being said i would love to see rackets make a reappearance as a whm weapon and weapons which heal instead of damage players. Though keep it within reason i dont really want to see a dragoon chaos thrusting to heal someone lol.
