New to MRD..have some questions.

I do a four man group with some friends. We have a CNJ, THM, LNC and me - a MRD. We all plan on going our respective classes , (CNJ-WHM, THM-BLM,LNC-DRG and me Warrior). My question is.. What is the point? I plan to do the tanky / dps sort of thing but it seems that CNJ/ THM and casters in general outshine melee to a disgusting point. I'm clearly new to the game.. my MRD is only 27 and what not but does this get ANY better at end game? Is everyone expected to just roll up a caster cause they're much better (it seems), than melee jobs.

Atm my lancer buddy and I are completely mind blown with how pathetic we are in EXP groups. We basically leech while the CNJ and THM just demolish everything in seconds. I don't even get to tank. Is there a point to continue leveling this job? Does melee have a place at end game? Or is it all full BLM/CNJ parties? lol thanks.

MRD isn't a DPS job (per se), it's a job for tanking and trashing mobs through AoE. You don't get your AoE ability until right before your final AF quest so yes, until then it is pretty crappy.

There are a lot of reasons for this, primarily level correction/gear just not being very good at low levels. Leveling is easy, enjoy getting PL'd, when you're high enough and have Steel Cyclone it'll be a bit different for you. If you do plan to continue as a WAR, you'll need to have your PLD sub to at least Lv.22, and lack of other options in the WAR tree, MNK at Lv.6.

I dont understand jobs all that much yet.. i know I get the job soul at 30, so I can be a Warrior (30mrd/15pug) and then sub PLD? so I can sub PLD only after I lvl GLD to 30 and then the 15 requirement of that? Just curious? Also.. so do BLM's completely dominate end game? Is there a point to us for bosses? Does our damage matter? lol LNC/Pug/DRG/MRD any of us.

MRD becomes WAR which is the preferred tank 9 out of 10 times. It is a great tank/good AoE dps job.

When you're WAR you can sub abilities from GLA and PGL.

That would be Gladiator, not PLD. You cannot cross-class JOB abilities, only CLASS abilities.

Ok, great! Thanks for all the input guys. So my last question, which hasnt been answered.. is ok so War is garbage until later but end game dungeons - Are casting classes still crazy dominant, or can melee actually contribute good damage? Lancers / Pugs, for example?

for super speed runs, BLM is pretty much king. WARs are utilized for their AoE and hate control in those situations.

Doesn't combo off-class unfortunately. If it did I'd drop featherfoot and rampart for Fast > Flat combo on chim zergs.

BLM is by far the most used DD job, however, MNK and DRG shine in certain situations.

For exp groups THM is extremely overpowered as they can frontload a ton of damage, while for a melee it takes time to get the DPS rolling and by then the enemies are dead. Exp tanks only shine when you do large pulls of enemies that significantly outlevel your group, in which case the casters cannot wipe them out fast enough so you're actually needed to keep them off the squishies. You really need the GLA hate abilities to pull this off, however, and from my experience most people cannot competently tank more than one or two mobs regardless.

As a relatively new player how exactly does a level 30-something MRD/WAR tank groups of mobs when THMs and DDs start AOEing and attacking random mobs right away? I know when I have 4 mobs keeping them all in control really is quite difficult with the abilities that I have at my disposal.

you can't, blm's tank while DD get the TP to finish stuff off. the game isn't played in a traditional sense at lower levels unless you want really slow xp

You can Provoke one mob, Flash another and combo a third. GLA does a bit better because Rampart and Shield Bash are great for holding even a fourth mob. If you have multiple THMs each focusing on a separate mob, though, sometimes there is just nothing you can do.

At lower levels, THMs are better served attacking their own mobs, considering how fast they can burn through them. CNJs too.

Honestly, levelling MRD now is a pain compared to how it used to be. Before the ability overhaul, sure-- you run in, mash out Broad/Full Swing to get hate on everything, do some basic attacks, and you were golden. Now, you don't get any AoEs until Overpower at 30, you generate TP slower than a DRG... the only saving grace is that at least you have some kind of offensive stance (Berserk) for a damage boost, but it falls off far easier than Power Surge if you're actually off-tanking or DPSing enough.

WAR will give you a great AoE, two emnity tools, a mitigation move, and Mighty Strikes. You are, however, going to be a tank, or a very tanky DD that has great AoEs.

Yeah, I hope SE does something to improve melee damage in 2.0. I'd love for them to get rid of the over reliance on TP/autoattack. Make it so that half of the attacks can be used independent of TP -- and in fact build TP instead. Leave TP just for Battle Regiment/combo abilities.

I like the auto attack / tp system personally. I liked it in FFXI. My problem is that Black Mages hit for over a 1,000 at my lvl and I still swing for a little more when I was in my 30's. I was swinging for like 80 in my 20's to 30's and now i hit for like 130-160. Mage's dont even have to buy gear to be viable. That's my biggest problem.
