I've played ffxiv alone most of the time I've been around. I never really done one of the raids or fully gotten into the game (don't really know how to). However, I know of them and have watched one of my friends play in them (he no longer plays). I'm not new to mmorpgs. I've played WoW for several years, but have fallen off the last couple of years.
I've been looking to get more into ffxiv, but have no idea where to start. I've not played through endwalker yet. Questing is really tedious for me when there's no end reward, you know? so if anyone has any tips, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Because FF14 is a terrible MMORPG.
If you understand MMORPGs, and go in expecting an MMORPG then you're going to be disappointed.
It is a single player game with average multiplayer elements.
Unfortunately, Final Fantasy fans had a bit of a cry when they realised that the original FF14 was a good MMORPG (as it borrowed heavily from FFXI) and, sadly, Square didn't want to drown under the salty tears of the whiners.
If you don't like the experience now (with the questing), you're never going to like it. There are plenty of actual, proper MMORPGs out there to try. -

It really depends on your interests and goals. What do you want out of the game? Only by knowing that, can we really help you. Common examples are...
- Story/lore person.
- Raiding/difficult content.
- Social/to interact and make friends.
- Roleplaying.
- Collecting things (achievements, mounts, minions, or whatever else).
- Pvp.
The main thing with the quests is that the fireball quest is the most important one. It has an endgoal, which is unlocking all the areas and its associated content, although it sometimes gives other things such as experience, mounts and minions.
The blue quests unlock content or game features, but are technically optional.
To participate in raids, you would just queue for them using Duty Finder. Although it depends which type of raids.- Binding Coils were meant to be the hard raids for A Realm Reborn, so they are not supplied by a roulette.
- Anything labeled (Extreme), Minstrel's Ballad, (Unreal), (Savage) or (Ultimate) is meant to be difficult content, and isn't supplied by a roulette, so the queues could take days or never succeed. Extreme and Minstrel's Ballad are supplied by Mentor Roulette, but only a relatively small portion of players have access to that, so the queue could still take hours or days.
- Alliance Raids (24-person raids) are casual content and you can queue for any of them and it will be fine.
- Starting in Heavensward, the 8-person raids have an easy story version and a (Savage) version. So if it does not say (Savage), just queue for it and you will eventually get into it and it'll be easy.
- People don't do old "hard" raids in their challenging form very much. They just destroy them easily in their higher-level gear, or focus on the latest ones at max level. But there are small communities who do old raids with settings that make them difficult again, for fun/the experience of doing it.
- "Hard" raids are typically recruited for either in Party Finder, in discord PUG servers, or by forming statics through discord, reddit or websites such as https://www.reddit.com/r/FFXIVRECRUITMENT/ or https://www.xivrecruit.com/

You really have to like your character and keep track of the story. If you can't do that it'll never be fun. There are some good gameplay elements but not until deep into the game so if you don't get invested in the setting it'll never click.

For the most part FFXIV is now an online single player game by design with extra player slots added to some MSQ content with a few upper tier multiplayer bits added in the form of EX/Savage/Ultimate/alliance raids. The majority of the content being tuned downward over the years in claims of needing the game to be more "accessible". The game design IMO doesn't even promote the sense of an online community in most content as people generally just see other players in Duty Finder content as NPC's, hence the somewhat common meltdowns by people when the "NPCs" don't obey their orders.

If questing isn't for you then you might not like 14. A large majority of content is locked behind MSQ. If you purchase a story skip then you'll probably need to go back and unlock all the other content which is usually done by doing a short quest chain.

Not that I don't enjoy questing. I just need a reason to do it and then do the stuff afterwards. Like in WoW you do the storyline and then have content afterwards. IE raiding, mythic plus dungeons, uhm professions. which is why I got into this because it's a lot more indepth I guess.

08-02-2023, 07:15 AMRitsukoSonodaOutside of a number of 4 player side dungeons in ARR everything is essentially gated behind either the MSQ or a side quest story line with the endgame content being to clear or repeat clear upscaled versions of the original battles. However there isn't an upscaled version of the standard 4 player duties or the 24 player alliance duties. It's mostly regulated to just the 8 player ones. The only exceptions that come to mind would be Eureka's BA which has no basic version essentially starting in it's hard mode as it's difficulty is tuned higher than Eureka itself and the harder version of Bozja's DR. Though I suppose you could throw the harder versions of the critereon dungeons and upper premade party only floors of deep dungeons as exceptions to a degree as well.Quote:

But after expansions of guilds fall apart because not enough people it got old and just frustrating. A lot of what i am about to say has already been mentioned, But here we go.
Final Fantasy XIV is not an MMORPG. It is an RPGMMO.
The game is designed for EVERYONE to be able to beat it, which means the story of the entire game is at the skill level of a 6yo Minecraft player and does not get more difficult as the game goes on, infact i would say that it gets easier over time as more and more of the player base have begged for an MMO to become a single player game.
The endgame contains next to no real MMO content, outside of completing the same two max level dungeons on repeat every single day for 4 months (Which are so stupidly easy that it becomes a chore to even queue them for weekly tomestone limit), you only have 4 raid bosses, 2 trial bosses and an alliance raid (Also way too easy) to last you for an entire 8 month major patch cycle.
The best part about being a new player, is the backlog of content you can do synced to get a near release experience of older content. That will last around 2-3 years for a casual player, or about 1 year for a hardcore MMO player. Unfortunately, if you play the game on anything other than NA or JP, you will have to sit through excruciatingly long party finder times just trying to find people to DO the old content with you.
The game has the potential to be massive, and outscale every MMO on the market, but sadly the developers do not want to experiment with new ideas and keep player retention up, and anything you say about it will just stir up the typical white knights that have played the game since SHB and tell you to go play other games if you don't like what we are given, even if you have been playing since 2.0 and know the developers CAN deliver better content. -

Think of 14 like a long, long, long movie, and you are the lead actor.
And that movie, when you decide to pause it, has some MMO elements.
You can say 14 is more like an RPGMMO than an MMORPG.
If you are craving the mindless grinds, the power scales, the senseless leveling, the meaningless hard battles - it is available on 14 but not as hard as those of any old school Korean MMOs.
It's largely a JRPG before it's an MMO. That's why it is massively, massively popular. -

If you are looking for a community i would try the community finder. That way you don't need to wait for someone to do their little spiel. You can just find one on your server and get in contact that way.

The Balance will be your best bet for information on specific jobs, openers and general rotations. They have dedicated sections for each job, where you can chat with other high end players and have any questions answered by people who are qualified to answer it.

I was also a Mythic raider, along with M+ dungeons (20+).
Im not as opposed to the story now, the FFXIV story is pretty good if you take the time.
If you want to skip past the story quickly.
Boost a Job to level 80, (if you can afford it) - even if you decide you don't like it, you get a 100-150% XP boost for any other job lower level.
If you do like the job it makes getting through Story much faster to be over level.
I don't suggest a story skip, the game progressively teaches the basics of the game as you go up in content.
People that story skip, it is obvious when they get to raid level, not knowing fundamental indicators and/or mechanics.
Just Escape out of all the story dialog and cuts
End-game raids are Very fun. Even old raids synced are fun.
And you can get groups for them despite what some say.
FF raiding isn't about gear entirely like WoW, It is certainly nice to have the raid gear.
However, you can clear the entire raid set in crafted gear which can simply be bought from the market board.
There are no addons or filters like wow, rather than being added into groups, as long as you have the ilvl you simply fill into a party finder group posted.
I don't suggest a static early on while you learn FF raiding, you learn far more from using party finder.
FF raiding is more like M+ though, unlike Mythic raiding, there Is far more personal responsibility for getting through savage or ultamates.
But people are far more patient with people learning the fights as long as you are honest about your progression point.
FF raiding is far more fun, and much less stressful compared to wow raiding.
PF has gotten far more toxic with how many wow players now play FF,
Many think they are better players than they actually are, or just in a rush for no real reason.
The current tier will be current for quite some time, you have until next summer to clear it.
And there are always groups clearing current content, many of them fill with Experienced players that want to teach newer raiders.

If you're interested in checking out the XIV raid scene, I'd recommend finishing Endwalker since all the optional raid questlines (and most optional things in general) unlock after a given expansion's MSQ completion. You'll also want to finish the normal mode series so it will unlock the Savage version, which is the raided version. I don't know how long that will take you or if you're looking for a specific raiding FC experience. But the tier didn't release too long ago so I still see fresh parties up in PF for all the floors. So if you don't want to deal with a specific hardcore raiding FC, you can try to PF it. Or find a static either in Discord or using a site like XIV Recruit. I wanted to get into Savage finally recently and found my static using that site.
