I can't be the only one thinking this. What happened to this game after Shadowbringers?
I can't be the only one thinking this. What happened to this game after Shadowbringers?
Shadowbringers was the catalyst lol.
People have been asking for a low-stakes adventure for fun. Lo and behold, a low-stakes adventure for fun. We're on a new continent with new characters to meet, new places to explore, and new mysteries to uncover. The trailer is teasing plenty enough to sink my teeth into.
I'm excited for it. And I still remember the time you ran into the Gilgamesh Novice Network screaming about how we're all delusional for enjoying the game. Enough doomposting, man.
You can really tell who wasn't around for the Stormblood teaser trailer, huh?
Wait for the complete thing before you start crying.
This is actually true. The community has been wanting low-stakes slice of life adventure for a long time and it grew even more widespread as of patch 6.1 with Newfound Adventures. Which didn't deliver the way people had hoped it would.
If we follow the plot pyramid, Endwalker was the Climax, Dawntrail is the start of the Falling Action. It's not impossible for there to be a second Rising Action but we have to suffer through the falling action first to get there.

Wasn't the best, but far from the worst. Stormblood teaser trailer was really bad.
Unless you're comparing teaser trailers to full trailers, which is...
NA fanfest: small tease
EU fanfest: more of the trailer is revealed.
JP fanfest: we get the full trailer
The trailer we saw yesterday is by no means the trailer we will get before game release. I would not anticipate an actual game trailer until the Fan Festival in Japan, scheduled for early next year.
Few things of substance in there, aye, but it's still just a teaser. I'm not feeling too hot about it either most likely due to my feelings on EW, but at this point we just gotta wait for the full trailer/future announcements.
Guess the epic world-saving trailers went the way of the epic world-threatening villains.
I like the scions but they are the reason I was quite disappointed in the trailer lol - I expected a fresh start - a clean slate away from all those scion shenanigans just good ol adventurer where you're unknown and newb :/
Your diagram is better interpreted as the components for each and every expansion. Leveling encompasses both exposition and rising action. The end of leveling is the Climax to the story. The post-release patches are the falling action with resolution of the primary story lines for that particular expansion as part of the final patch release. In the case of Endwalker, the Endsinger Trial is the Climax to the story. The post-release patches are falling actions (which may have their own rise/climax/falling action).
When writing multipart fiction such as trilogies, writers can (and do) cheat. They are not bound to the diagram you presented. Endwalker at release can be considered the resolution phase of the 2.0 through 6.0 story line itself. Complete with its own Climax (as multipart fiction tends to do).
Dawntrail at its release will utilize all of the plot components you've mentioned in its own self-contained story line, not a continuation of Endwalker.
... i liked it though ... :(
I don't understand the kind of person who sees Urianger kicking back with a tropical drink and isn't immediately satisfied.
Not sure how I feel tbh...the music though not great I do miss the old FF songs and I know times change but it felt all over the place and the singing was not so good. I do not mind the scions as I do like them but I would love to have seen Hilda or Yugiri for a change.
I hate summer I am more of a snow autumn type so going to tropical places does nothing for me but I will enjoy the lore and some of the gear I am sure. I look forward to seeing more of the trailer and hope they can change that music up a bit :)
how i feel exactly, I really liked them but at the same time i wanted a fresh cast at least in the main 7.0 series, or at least to see more new faces then the old ones. I think the Scions can/should return at some points but shouldn't be our main cast or focus.
Theming wise? idk how i feel about it, certainly not as cool as EW/SHB but I don't mind the more relaxed pace... just wish that it would be more of a fresh start.
Eh, I thought the trailer was pretty hype. Looking forward to expansions enter updated trailers in EU and JP fanfests
Not the worst but far below HW, ShB and EW.
Even Shadowbringers first trailer was insane and just got more and more insane as it was completed.
We only saw the Scions on vacations and the WoL fighting some lizard king just because.
It also doesn't help that the trailer is heavily disconnected from the ongoing events.
Well, I'm not a fan of the music. I don't know what that style is called, but "nasaly boy band beech song" is not only one of my least favorite genres of music, for some reason I can't explain, it makes me mildly annoyed/agitated/almost angry. I have no idea why (I don't just mean this, I mean ALL songs like that do), but it just grates on me in a way I find particularly unpleasant. ShB's theme I was iffy on (not a fan of screamo, either), which made EW's theme all the more interesting to me because it had a SB screamo section but for some reason that didn't bother me too much, probably because it was followed up by "On wings up hope, we rise up through the night, HIGH-er, O! High-er~!" and I LOVE that kind of music. It flows like ribbon made from silk and lifts the spirit to soar. And when that beat dropped in the Endsinger fight... /cheff'skiss. I kinda want to go que up for it now just to do that again, ngl. The orchestral version mixed with the WoL theme is just so epic from the final phase of that fight.
That said, the ShB one, while I didn't love it, either, won me over due to that riff starting when "Take it. We fight as one." hits the screen at the climax of the story. It's still not my favorite theme, but it did redeem itself via story events to where I find it enjoyable (it's also good running music; good cadence for my steps and a good build up climax for sprints). So it's...guh...POSSIBLE that this one could somehow win me over, though I see it unlikely since the stakes aren't high enough to generate a scene like ShB/EW, like as not.
...but at present...it annoys the hell out of me other than the segment where the STOP SINGING and just play the music. That's the only part I somewhat like.
.
As for the trailer itself - I'm not a big fan of "slice of life". I like bits of it, but there's only so much of that I can take, and if the expansion's story is MOSTLY that, I'm going to find it less than interesting. I've also never cared for "manufactured drama", which is why I hate reality TV and a lot of modern "drama" shows. "Let's insert this unnecessary drama for no good reason to make the show dramatic!". So I'm kind of iffy about this "disagreement" among the Scions.
I can't imagine NOTHING will happen with the story, but I'm not sure I find interfering in the leadership process of another culture with random slice of life moments of eating every new dish we run across us with each new food item having twice the polygons of the last will be something I find overly enjoyable.
.
I'm hopeful for the expansion, but I can understand the people not sold on it by the trailer.
Random person: WE are tired of cosmic menace, we want something more simple
SE: here, go there
Random person: NOOOOOOOOOO
That he's becoming an alcoholic?
Which actually could be an interesting side plot that a good chunk of the player base would loathe because they would see it as SE lecturing on real life issues.
That's Soken's extremely rough draft of a work in progress. The final version will be much better (though possibly still not to your taste).
EU FanFest might get a version with finished instrumentals. The final version won't be heard until JP FanFest.
I am glad we can make a decision on how boring something can be based off a 30 second teaser.
i'll admit it's not up to shadowbringers or endwalkers but then this expansion has a different tone, you couldn't really do a trailer like those. I do think it's a better trailer than the stormblood one though, can't speak to to the heavensward trailer, never saw it.
This was a make or break for me...The game has been going in a direction that I don't particularly like and from seeing the teaser trailer its more or less cemented my decision to unsub for good . I'm tired of the same crew and the setting is not my cup of tea. Nothing in that teaser stood out. Stormblood even with all its faults was at least able to peak my interest...This just fell so flat....
For the most part, I give the trailer about a 5/10
The Scion being there at all kind of brought it down for me. I get it, their our friends and all that but I really, REALLY wanted to break away from them for an expansion but even going to a new continent doesn't seem to be far enough to escape them. If they're just there for a side quest or 2 and don't play a big part in the story, I'll be fine with that but if they're there to be expositional center pieces to the next big thing, I'll be more than a little upset.
The music, which I know is only a demo piece of the actual theme, feels a bit....out of place with the vibe I got from the trailer. It seemed like a relaxing summer vacation to Mesoamerica, complete with Mayan themed structures and all but the music didn't really sell that to me. I won't say the music was bad, just that it didn't match the trailer.
I am going to criticize that one of the new jobs might be yet another Sword Class though. I don't care if he has a gun or whatever as a secondary weapon but can we please move away from swords. There are other weapons for a melee job to have. Where's the Bo-staff, Mace, Spear/Shield? I know WAR is seen as the Unga Bunga job but can I get a nice thick club that I can bash someone's face in?
I've seen people ask for "Lessprior story weight andworld/reality/universe-destroying stakes," but I don't think I've seen anyone ask for an outright zero stakes tropical vacation? Do they meet in secret and have the numbers necessary to stifle leaks?
To be fair, I was considerably more hyped for the Stormblood teaser trailer. Wasn't any Shadowbringers teaser, but the setting, vibe, the preparation for war below (the context and stakes of which were already laid out by the time the teaser dropped), etc., easily rivaled or surpassed Heavensward's for me.
"Hey, guys, we're finally going to take on the Garlean Empire, starting from that final citystate of Eorzea that we'd been itching to see" just had a lot more on-the-nose promise to me than "We're going to that one Gleamer's home island for a vacation and Estinien has upped his dad vibe."
...What the heck were these post-launch patches then? Unless we're to say that some Voidsent and plated cyclops man are more climactic than the End of Days?
I would hope 6.x would already include its resolution in itself rather than the game taking a literal expansion-long break from any story height.
7.0's story should be 7.0's story, not just a braking zone for 6.x.
Would it be salvageable to you if that were somehow just the retracted form of an articulated whip-blade? (Yeah, that's unlikely, but hey, one could hope.)
More importantly, though, that blade may be a holdover from the simple fact that he was a Paladin last expansion (the lack of shield itself perhaps symbolic), with him again transitioning to the new job during the trailer (see also HW's, ShB's, and possibly StB's trailers). It may be that the first glimpse we get of that new job... is that basically no glimpse at all on that ship.
I'm not sure about that. I'd say defeating the Endsinger was the Climax, and anything after that was the falling action. Golbez is a filler arc, you could say he has his own pyramid, but overall isn't impactful.
The trailer would be the Exposition for the new arc, not the Falling Action.
I'm going to give 7.0 a chance story-wise. I've been wanting low-stakes adventure as well. The OG story was a chore to keep up at times, it's about time we just have fun, or go explore undiscovered mysteries.
Ik they're going to start a new multi-expansion storyline. We're exploring some ruins and the new world, so that's interesting at the very least.
What I annoyed about is the samey content cycle.
- I feel like the amount of content we've lost doesn't match the content we've been given.
- I miss having many than 2 dungeons in expert to do. Though it is a hallway simulator, I would like to see more than just story dungeons.
- Every expansion so far has had problematic job design choices, I have zero expectations for DT.
I might be in the minority (or not) but I actually enjoyed Eureka/Bozja. Tomestone grind is so lazy IMO, at least HW kept it interesting.
SE really knows how to get casual players excited. All they need to do is show Graha eating taco and the players squeal, calling it a good trailer already.
Which is why Im not surprised the game has catered more to casuals. Im not hardcore my any means but I do want to struggle in my mmos and expect badass cinematics. Maybe it will happen during the full reveal, who knows.
That's not the expansion trailer. That's just a teaser. Of course it's going to come up short compared to the full trailers for other expansions.
GRAHA TACO xDDDDDDDDDDDD !!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!! Did you SEE?? O.o ?? The way GRAHA BIT THE TACO xDDD LMAOOOOOOOO omg EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE graha TACOOO!!! They did it. They beat the burger!!! GRAHA BURGER??? NO. GRAHA TACO!!!!!! MMMMMMMM. EEEEEEE!!!! BIIIGG BITE! :3 xD !!! GRAHA CAN HAS....TACO?? KYAAAAAAAAA~!!!
That aside, it was clearly a fan servicey version and not the real full trailer as that is how it usually goes. It's unfortunate that the characters are so locked into these predictable set patterns of eyeroll worthy behavior that nothing about them really feels cool anymore. I remember thinking Graha was interesting, back when he wore the cloak. Now he takes a bite of something and thats his entire personality with 300 fanarts of it to back it up. Even Estinien is slowly being stripped of his coolness, with his now constant wandering around looking confused and overpaying gimmick. Hopefully the full version of the trailer will be way more intense. More action, more tension, more heart racing moments please!! It's ok to have cutesy moments, but lets not let the cutesy things be all the story has! Its bad enough every patch has forced Hildebrand content now...
Shadowbringers and Endwalker both had great trailers and what did they actually give us?
If the gameplay and content in Dawntrail are good they could show us scrubbing toilets in the trailer for all I care.
I don't agree. I think the trailer is perfect for what it is trying to portray. We are moving to a new story and things are more pleasant/light hearted. We need this. Enough of all the doom and gloom of shadowbringers and endwalker. I guarantee we will still have our evil antagonists but at least we can go back to being adventurers while that happens. Also keep in mind you have seen half the trailer.
