To start off before my theory I want to explain some things that this theory isn't.
1. Not a theory that XVI is one of the shards.
2. Not a theory that XVI is on the same planet as XIV in the past, present or the future.
3. Not a theory that XVI is the same, but an alternate version of the reality in any form. Though I do believe that the universes are adjacent, just not in the same way that XIV has multiple shards. Its not a single planet kind of adjacent, but a whole universe being adjacent to another.
Now, to further set the ground we need to explain the Interdimensional Rift, and how it is known to work. I am not including crossovers from other games unless it relates to FFXIV.
1. You can dream your consciousness across the rift if you have some sort of an anchor. I.e. characters being pulled to sleep, and waking up in Dissidia NT. I know the game wasn't a very good one, but it is a perfect example of how they can tie characters into crossovers.
2. You can suddenly feel "lost" and not know where you are, but in reality be in another Final Fantasy game. A great example of this is Iroha from The Maidens Rhapsody event that sometimes comes back in FFXIV.
3. You can somehow be transported to the world of XIV, and be completely aware of it in the case of Lightnings FFXIII event, which makes sense. There was a lot of worldly bending stuff going on in her trilogy, so she would possibly notice if she were somehow conscious in another one.
4. Shantotto is just magically involved in a fate during her XI event. It is not explained how she got here, but she is here. She isn't a strong example, because we don't know how she was in XIV, but I feel the need to at least put it here.
5. The Puff Puff girls, and the monsters from Dragon Quest somehow making it into the world of XIV. Likely leaking into the game in some way, which the quests hinted at.
6. Yokai Watch monsters somehow bleeding into the realm from a completely different universe made by another gaming company. Square Enix does not publish those games. This one is the least likely to be canon, but considering the interdimensional rift doesn't just work for Final Fantasy games. It seems to tie in a lot of Square Enix titles at times.
7. Noctis literally followed a daemon into the world of XIV, because said monster could travel the interdimensional rift. This is not the first time the actual Noctis from XV has traveled to another world either. Dissidea though weird, IS canon, but it happens in a way that isn't necessary to play. Play it to make sense of it. Though, I would suggest playing an older one. The older ones are a lot more fun to play, and don't require online services that are discontinued.
8. Gilgamesh often travels through the Interdimensional Rift. Ever since his first game in FFV he has been mostly the same character every single time, bringing weapons from past games on his travels with him. The only debatable different Gilgamesh is the one in FFXV.
9. The Omega Weapon. Though XIVs MIGHT be different, it is theorized that they might all come from XIV. Either way it DOES travel dimensions, and is known to come from other Final Fantasy games.
10. Shinryu, in its original incarnations it is literally FROM the Interdimensional Rift itself. Though the XIV one is a mere imitation, it is possible that the original was a traveler, and that it is based on that one. Though not much is known about that, and its merely speculative. Take my theory on that with a grain of salt.
11. Y'jhimei is a Miqo'te who traveled from the universe of XIV to XV's. In her lore she was literally transported from XIV to the world of Eos in XV. It is canon that she traveled to it. A weird case, but it happened.
Now are these events all completely canon? OF COURSE NOT, but the Final Fantasy ones are definitely canon. The events that place in the Final Fantasy series CLEARLY describe inter-dimensional travel, and how it is possible. The Dragon Quest one is iffy, but considering they own the rights, I don't see why not. The Yokai one also might be canon, though that is the weakest of them all, they do mention "coming from another world" during the content. These all imply the rift is involved.
So what makes some characters the same, but not quite in a strange Final Fantasy fashion. This is the next part we have to explain to get to the bottom of this mystery. In the series, there are characters that share similar traits, names, and roles in each story. They don't always come back every time, but usually Cid, Biggs, Wedge, and Princess Sarah often come back in some form. Princess Sarah is on a hiatus, but for awhile she was a reoccurring princess for a bit. Appearing once in Final Fantasy III, and again in IX, though differing people, they are a reoccurring character. This category of character seems to spread like minded copies in the series in some way that pop up throughout the worlds in the series. No one knows why, but they happen.
Now its going to get weirder. Why do places like Ivalice, Doma, and characters like Fran, Golbez, Princess Ashe, etc. pop up in FFXIV, but not other games except for their origins? Well, I think somehow "copies" in a lore sense exist for no reason other than they are copies. Not the same, but eerily similar, just played out in different ways. Somehow the universes can take these characters, and "clone" them from some kind of influence in a way. No one knows how, and I don't know if the devs will ever explain this. They just seem to appear for fan service, but its fun to think of a lore reason for why they are "copied" in a sense. Don't think too hard on it though.
So this brings me to how I feel XIV, and XVI are connected.
I believe they are ADJACENT universes, which CAN influence each other. Another possibility is that they are in the same universe, but are far far away from each other within the Sea of Stars. Though, the adjacent theory in my opinion is more likely, either one COULD work. I think the devs just want to distance XVI from XIV as much as possible, but since XVI is theorized to be an upgraded version of XIVs engine, and they do share similar motifs in style, speech, story, and dialogue, it does make sense that they would be "loosely" connected. Meaning that they are siblings which influence each other in concepts. Though, I think its without a doubt obvious that XVIs universe is darker, and less merciful. They also seem to share a similar concept to how transforming into primals can work. Though I'm unsure if using these Eikons as they are called disrupts whatever makes the world work in that universe/world. We don't know enough about it, other than that the game heavily borrows from the way that Shiva, Thordan, Knights of the Round, Tsukyuyomi, Hydaelyn, Zodiark, Save the Queen, and etc were used in XIV. I feel like XVI is expanding upon this concept, because of its popularity, and interest in the devs. This is one way that XIV influences XVIs world in a sense. I theorize they are SIMILAR, but not quite the same. Siblings if we want to call them. Therefore I will dub my theory the "Sibling Universe" theory. It just sounds pretty cool. :P
Note: Nier DID NOT travel the interdimensional rift to get to XIV, and make all the copies that exist on the first. Somehow Nier got to the First, and traveled after a very long time during one of its endings. That means that one of the parallel endings IS in the XIV universe. Does that mean every single ending is? No. Look at the MCU, and how realities work when they are adjacent. Events play out different, so even though it is true that Nier could be in the universe that XIV is in, it doesn't mean it is. A lot of games like to use multiverse theory, and Final Fantasy has hinted at it before. It is no exception, therefore I think just one ending is linked to XIV.

I feel like I should note that XII, XV, and Type 0 exist on a different type of universe than the rest of Final Fantasy. They call these Fabula Nova Crystalis, and for some reason share differing god like entities, and methods of universal laws compared to the other Final Fantasy games beyond its rifts. Though they are still Final Fantasy, they share similar universal laws in some way, and represent the idea that in Final Fantasy there are likely sibling universes. Though these don't write the rules for them all, it is a clear example that XIV, and XVI could be similar in a way. As well as Tactics, which I will discuss a little bit further.
Some people even feel that the Ivalice universes also exist in a way, so they try to explain how they all could be connected, and reflected to another, because its not quite clear. Are they just legends, or are they events that all canonically happened? People got very confused for this reason. Regardless though, Square Enix calls XII, XII: Revenant Wings, Tactics: War of the Lions, Tactics: A2 Grimoire of the Rift, Tactics Advance, Vagrant Story, and more obscure titles part of the Ivalice Alliance. They are evidence that some sort of realities exist with similar laws, and therefore they are also adjacent at the very least in some form.
Now this theory is popular, and merely hinted at in X-2, but it is implied that FFX's planet was populated in the far future of VII's planet. Therefore they MIGHT exist in the same universe, and not be in a different universe at all. This part of my post is getting a bit weird, so no I am not going to elaborate any more on these, aside from the fact that I will say that the time of X-2 was very strange for Square Enix, where they were doing a lot different sequels. Some of them didn't pan out well, and were considered messy by fans in ways. It was when the creator of Final Fantasy left that all of this started to happen. Keep that in mind, because when games in that era have references like these, and suggestions that they are loosely connected, it might not mean anything now if they were to go back and remake them. Just food for thought.
Anyway I think that is the end of my post for now. Please understand that I am merely peacefully discussing evidence that FFXVI could be RELATED loosely in some way, and that I don't think they are tied together in an extreme way. I think there will be references (like Estiniens voice actor being a minor boss) at best most of the time, especially because it seems like the devs really don't want us to think its XIV. So much so, I theorize this may be one factor in why we aren't getting an XVI event close to its launch in FFXIV. I believe they really want to do their own thing, and drive home this fact before doing the crossover event that Yoshida has hinted that they will do in the future. Regardless though, I think they are loosely connected, and that is okay. They just won't be focusing on any hint of that for now, until fans realize how different the games actually are during the launch period, but keep your eyes peeled, because you may find Clive, and possibly even another character from that universe drifting into the world of XIV for a moment. ;3

You've basically just described the Final Fantasy multiverse as presented by the Dissidia games (and corroborated by the many, many times Gilgamesh has crossed over into things); all the Final Fantasy games exist on their own worlds, but are governed by the same gods who are doing their own things, and yes, are 'close enough' on a multiversal level to cross over, although it's basically impossible to do it reliably. So, good job, but I feel like we could've gotten to this conclusion in a much shorter route. I made a video going over all the crossovers, if you're curious.
For the record, though: Not every Gilgamesh is the Gilgamesh. IX, XI and XV have their own Gilgameshes, and Type-0's is inconclusive and might be a plausible origin story for 'the' Gilgamesh. -

I'm on the side of all the games taking place in the same galaxy.
Interdimensional travel is used to move through space and time to directly connect these planets.
We have evidence of them also existing in the same space though.
The Creator from FFIV The After Years seeded planets all over the galaxy with crystals to gather data, and likely influenced the evolution of similar life everywhere, similar to how the Ancients in Star Trek caused so many humanoid races to exist.
There's also Pupu, who appears in several games, and travels through space rather than the Rift.
An interesting point in Ultima Thule noted that there were many other dragons that also attempted to flee with eggs. Perhaps these dragons were also chased by Omega frames and are the origin of dragons in other FF games, as well as the Shinryu and Omega from FFV.
Though not every Omega is extraterrestrial. XII's was a giant Mimic for example.
Shantotto was experimenting with interdimensional gates in XI, so that's your explanation there.
I like to think everything is canon, though when it comes to crossovers with other series, its best not to think too hard.
Nier is more significant to Nier outside of the direct events of the Raid. Yokai are just a weird thing that exist in XIV, but never come up outside of the event.
When it comes to contrivances, like Ivalice existing in XIV, so similar to XII, I just treat it as coincidence. It exists for fan service, and there doesn't need to be a special connection to another world to cause it. Maybe echoes across dimensions or some such, but it doesn't actually matter. -

For what it's worth, XIV Ivalice was staked from the outset as not being the Ivalice, and had immediate evidence for that... that people mostly didn't notice because it required you to be enough of a nerd to recognize a timeline discrepancy. The timeline of the Ivalice games is basically XII->Tactics->Vagrant Story (with the other Tactics games being a little harder to place, but also not referenced in XIV so whatever); meanwhile in XIV, clearly enormously different versions of XII's events are taking place in the present, while Tactics' was in the past, and Vagrant Story is faintly implied to be going on somewhere off-screen.
'XIV Ivalice' is 'Tactics Ivalice' in the same way as, like, XIV's Golbez is IV's Golbez: it's not, and they try to make it as clear as they can while still retaining the reference. Granted they weren't very loud about that with Ivalice, but I'm not sure how they could've stated it clearer (or at least earlier, I feel like it's pretty clear by the time Fran turns up) without distracting from the story. -

Exactly, also the development team outright stated in a Letter From the Producer Live a few years ago that all FF worlds are basically seperate dimensions/universes, they're not other Shards to Hydaelyn or on other planets in the same universe - names of places from other FF games that appear in FFXIV are just references to those other games with little to no direct story connection to them (they're just fanservice, nothing more):
Note that was many years before they added the Return to Ivalice raid however, but the idea is still current - each FF world takes places in it's own seperate universe (despite some hinting at connections between some games - the infamous tongue-in-cheek FFVII-FFX link being one), and that will be the same with FFXVI.Quote:

Personally I think it'd be a really bad idea for them to do a XVI event soon, because XVI really needs the time to define and declare its own voice separate from XIV; it's got a shadow to move out of in a way no other crossovers have had, so it needs some time for people to stop treating it as being so linked to XIV that people genuinely think Clive is some version of the XIV WoL. And personally I hope the rewards are skippable because I don't like XVI, but that's me.
That sort of space would also give room o figure out rewards, too. Right now nothing about XVI looks like it'd make for very interesting cosmetics, especially across genders; I like Benedikta's outfit, but let's be honest, guys ain't getting that. But if fans suddenly rally around a character's appearance, there we go! -

Though XVI being the inspiration for an expansion isn't out of the realm of possibility. Before XV came out we got a lot of Thordan, and Knights of the Round related stuff which was tied to XV in a big way. Especially with the movie Kingsglaive. Its clear that Square Enix was priming our familiarity around these classic summons. I noticed that before XVI, we gradually got a lot more phoenix content. A fire bird inspired glamour on the mog station, TWO extra phoenix mounts, etc. Much more than just the stuff we got from Suzaku. It feels intentional.
I also noticed around the time of the FFVII: Rebirth release we gradually got new FFVII stuff in the form of the weapons. Square Enix may be influencing the devs of XIV in ways than we normally realize. It wouldn't surprise me if board members approached Yoshi P, and were like "This game brings a lot of money and attention. Can you think of a way to incorporate things that have to do with ____?" It doesn't sound unlike Square Enix at all. -

Fan service is definitely why XVI's Cid is also named Cidolfus and just happens to be the dominant of a thunder God. Well a thunder Ekion. Or why in E10 the background to that fight is X's Thunder planes. And actually that boss design makes a lot more sense. Not sure why it just took me this long. As Ixion is X's thunder Aeion/summon and so of course it got combined with Ramuh. All the while of being apart of a love letter to VIII.

But when it comes to fanservice, yeah it is easier to keep it that way or be not too specific about it or they would risk opening all sorts of problems with convoluted things like the multiverse, and it rarely is included in media as it is. If you look at time travel that can be seen more often, and that one already is convoluted as heck so the multiverse doubles down on it even. Which is not to say it is impossible, in a tiny and vague scale they are doing this already with the likes of Fran, but they also dont want to bloat FFXIV with other FF's too much I can imagine, keeping it original.Quote:

There isn't really multiple Rifts, nor is it a singular area. It's all encompassing in the same way "space" is.
The Void is used interchangeably with it, but I think refers more to the primordial energy aspect of it.
It is the capital N Nothingness like Chaos is in Greek Mythology.
Everything, including Space itself, was born from it, and everything will return to it.
In the beginning, there was only the Void, and the non-area it existed in, is the Rift, and the bubbles of existence it birthed are "not the Rift". -

(They don't want to disappoint MCHs who want Barret's gun-arm(s) as weapons, I guess.)
... which to circle back around leaves me questioning what exactly they'd offer as rewards for a XVI crossover event, given other than Torgal being adorable as a pup and Benedikta's outfit, nothing in it really stands out to me. Clive's Brand tattoo could work, I guess? -

there's really no more connection between XIV and XIV than there is XIV and any other FF game universe. each are their own dimension with their own laws of physics and the universe, and it is possible to cross between then (through the Interdimensional Rift) but is relatively uncommon.
recurring themes, motifs, people or places exist because, well it is the Final Fantasy franchise, but i think from a lore perspective, you can think of it as coincidences due to similarities in all the universes. like pretty much all of them have humans, after all. -

I played XII, and am mostly lukewarm on it; it looks nice, and there's some decent ideas in the writing, but it probably says something that I remembered about five plot beats and four locations (and incidentally, the only one of those locations I remembered that actually gets referenced by Dissidia, XIV, and SoP was Rabanastre, so clearly I forgot what the developers expected me not to). I like what Matsuno wrote in XIV, and as proper research to understand Nybeth Obdilord I did a lot of research into Tactics Ogre back before we knew Reborn was happening, but I mostly haven't touched the Ivalice stuff. Blame Tactics only being currently available on iOS and Android with touch controls, while having an awful UI for it.Quote:

Fair enough. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to not care for any given game but with FFXIV being a love letter to every other game in the franchise as well as various games outside of the franchise I think it's inevitable that at least some of what makes FFXVI into FFXVI is going to make its way into FFXIV. I suppose it's just a case of 'how' and 'when'.
I'm personally very curious to see where Clive's journey ultimately takes him and if the game does do well, what it'll mean for FFXIV's storylines and characters moving forward if many of the players who enjoy FFXVI decide to check out FFXIV. -

I've seen the trailers, the gameplay, the leaks, and it's like all my worst fears realized in terms of what I DON'T want Final Fantasy to be, so I can only hope that Yoshi-P realizes that the audience of XVI is very different from the audience of XIV. Or at least I hope that's the case lol. XIV expansions will be the only Final Fantasy releases this century I'm going to be enjoying, so I'd rather there be no spillover from XVI in regards to its tone and setting, which is more or less in a perfect spot for me currently.
Either way, I'll be rooting for my men Dion and Barnabas, as they are the only characters that slightly intrigue me.
I'm also fine with having a crossover event, I think it'd be fun to hang out with Clive in a more jovial, whimsical setting. -

I understand the genre shift from RPG to action, but... from what I played in the demo I've already seen other games do the similar things and do them better, so that didn't hold my interest. The story, likewise, doesn't grab my attention; it wears its inspirations on its sleeve, and neither of those really interest me. The problem with taking so much inspiration from other works is that it can end up feeling derivative, and I got that feel from the demo.
Nothing against the people who are interested in and hyped for it, but it's just not a game that was made for me... and I mean that in the nicest way I can.
I'mma just wait for Armored Core VI and VII: Rebirth. (I'm still betting on Tifa dying in this continuity instead of Aerith.) -

It's actually Sephiroth's hatred of Cloud that allows him to resist the pull of the Lifestream, though after the Nibelheim incident he needs vessels to act through since he technically died then and there.
I can't see them killing Cloud given he's the main protagonist. While there are already deviations from the original story they did say it's going to "closely" follow the original, so I don't see such a drastic divergence happening... there are differences, but this is still VII.
... and maybe it's a red herring, but the preview for Rebirth does lean somewhat into the idea (Sephiroth claiming Tifa is a Jenova construct and the real one died at Nibelheim; veracity yet to be determined).
As for XVI itself? Ehh, lacking interest I spoiled the whole story for myself and it's about what I expected. Maybe I've seen too many movies, maybe they wore their inspirations too much on their sleeves...
