Importance of Gear

Ok, so its been a long timex since I actively played, I just got back in a few weeks ago and was continueing on with my BRD, in all honestly, until close to endgame does gear matter outside of what drops from MSQ or Duty Finder? Just wanting to know so I can figure out where to put my focus on.

I've played off and on for years but this is honestly the farthest I've been (I'm just in post ARR, not even to HW yet)

You can clear the normal content by rolling your forehead over your keyboard.
No, it doesn't matter. Gear only matters in the content you actually get it from (Savage and extremes) Which usually boils down to the current 4 savage fights and an extreme.
You just have to roll your forehead over your keyboard a bit less in normal content once you get better gear.
FF's endgame is very shallow compared to that of some other MMO's unfortunately, and a lot more niche than in, say, World of Warcraft. Where the endgame is the main appeal, and where the game begins.

I did all of the Endwalker MSQ (until the free lv89 gear handout) using Nier raid gear so it cant matter that much

When you're doing the story there is very little concern to be paid to the gear - For the most part, the MSQ will naturally take you through the gearing process to where it isn't really a concern - You may bump into some issues with accessories since those are typically awarded through side-quests and dungeons - But you can get tomestone gear once you reach the appropriate level caps for the expansion, which will last you long enough until the level cap of the next expansion (Plus whatever drops you get from doing the dungeons.

Just equip what you can when it awards you with gear, and you'll be fine.

For each expansion, you will get free "base level endgame" gear from your job quests (so keep up with those) and then a second higher IL set from post-credits MSQ. on top of that you can buy the top-tier tomestone gear yourself, and levelling dungeons are guaranteed to drop at least one piece of gear that you need per run.

Yea I played WoW for years and your right about that.

Ok cool was just wanting to make sure I wasn't basically setting myself up for failure by not ether buying gear via the market boards or taking the time to grind out some gear with ether Duty Finder or taking the time to produce it myself, my BRD is sitting at LV 56 currently and its not like I'm really runnign into any trouble unless I mess up by staring off screen for a hot minute.

Kaurhz, thanks for mentioning accessories, I had noticed a lost of the post ARR quests drops a crap ton of accessories, most of which I have just turned into the Immortal Flames.

And once I reach endgame (whcih i know will be a few months off but) I will then turn to figure out the best routes for gear. Post ARR is slwoly draining my ability to function do to the low exp and just filler stuff.

Yea not gonna lie, I didn't find out until last night were a vendor was for those and by the time I even noticed that was a thing I was capped on tomestones lol

It's not super important but you will have people complaining that your in 83lvl gear in a 85-86lvl dungeon. More so if you're tanking. About halfway or so between leveling in expansions is a good time to update your gear. Post lvl expansion item sync is more then enough for non savage+.

Each dungeon has a minimum item level. Sure, for EXs and savage you want to push your ilevel as high as possible, but for anything else, min ilevel is fine.

Yea, I was thinking about that actually, as far as tanking goes I fully plan on waiting until after I've made it through to endgame before going back to level up the tanking classes (or healing for that matter) and by that time and have even better gear understanding I will make sure to have the best Ilvl possible before attempting those, mostly becuase it doesn't bother me so much if I die, but If I cause the direct death of another player I actually feel bad.

Pretty much, just buy the tomestone gear for each expansion as you unlock it, and that will carry you roughly to X5 for the next expansion. After that, upgrade what you get from dungeons, and you will basically be fine until you reach endgame. At that point, just spend the capped tomestones on your class of choice(if you decide to change from BRD), and just grab whatever to desynth/sell to GC/materials to sell on MB with the other currencies.

It is probably a good thing end-game in FFXIV is niche because it has all the elitism of MMOs like World of Warcraft, but likes to keep it bottled up instead of having it explode all over the place.

If tanking/Healing I would say keep your gear around 5 levels of the dungeon. If level 75 dungeon the stuff at level 70 you get from poetics will be fine. Beyond that you might want to put on anything you pick up in current dungeon if you win anything. If not try to get at least 3 pieces before moving to the next.

If DPS...not as important but you will be slowing things down for the others. Poetics can do the job well enough till the next Poetic set but much like I said before...any pieces won you may as well chuck it on. However Poetic is stronger than the early set of dungeons and is roughly even in the 5s. Example being Poetic 50 gear is pretty much even with level 55 gear. Beyond that take the new stuff and wear it.

On the flip side, it also means there's very little to do for people who aren't into social or hypercasual faceroll content. There isn't even any midcore content in this game, and it's helping nobody.
There isn't really any reason to not be supportive of a healthy endgame environment.

That is so SO wrong. I had a couple days ago a whitemage healing with a HW relic in a ShB dungeon. It mattered, very much so. When all of the sudden your heals are only half as potent.

I have never seen anyone inspect a player who is met in the leveling roulette and care if their gear is from the prior dungeon and the highest level it can be before the dungeon being run. Lol. What hyperbole.

Maybe if you have a competent, well geared team and/or depending on the dungeon. Some dungeons hit remarkably hard.

In the vaguest sense, as long as you have ilvl required to do a dungeon, you are qualified to do the dungeon. Generally people won’t care as long as you make some effort to keep gear relatively up to date.

If you are nervous about it, just do it with NPCs and re-equip with dungeon drops. All the drops for you, and no complaining players! Win win.

Final raid or tomestone gear from each expac will generally last until the 3rd dungeon (so 65/75/85), where you can replace with drops from said dungeon.

Mainly right now my biggest focus is making sure that my gear is compitent enough to run a dungeon or a "Hard" dungeon when it comes up as a quest requirement, so far I have been able to stay pretty close to everyone else and be helpful I think, but was also just making sure that gear gained mostly through MSQ can keep me going until basically endgame and when I jump into Extremes or Savages. So all of this info from everyone has been very helpful. I try to at least every 5 levels double check my gear against the market boards and make sure there isn't too big of a difference between what I've got on versus what I can buy. Which now I'm going to be double checking that against tomestone gear ( I need to research all the sellers for each expac)

That's been an ongoing thing since late ARR after they introduced coil. Originally, they had the EX fights as a continuation of the main story rather than a sideline activity, since they had the ascians force the beast tribes to use more crystals or what not to make a stronger eikon. Coil was the first raid content and due to the difficulty, people complained about not getting to see the story of coil, so they broke it down into normal coil and savage coil. Then they continued that through heavensward with normal Alex and savage Alex. The big difference between heavensward and now, is that peoples skill on jobs was no where near where it is now and the skill floor and ceiling are far closer together post shadowbringers. So in truth, it shouldn't be hard for the team to implement mid core level content.

Technically, they need to have a mid-core version of savage that is like the savage mode, but has the markers on the floor and maybe rewards half the loot. The big problem savage has is it hides mechanics from players far too much and therefore forces everyone who has an actual job in real life to use guides. Then it turns into people with different commitments all stacking into the same content and we got the social nightmare that is current savage. WoW fixed this by having multiple tiers and ultimately giving everyone access to the same cosmetics. The only piece that changes beyond that is the gear score.

I would add, the main core game (like 90% of what you are doing) is going to play very different to EX and/or Savage. Core game, as long as you aren’t dying you should be able to clear…

I can’t really speak from experience, but gear is going to be a lot more important, as well as fight memorization/positioning.

EX/Savage will demand much more competency in your skill rotation as well- there are enrage timers, etc.

..again I don’t really know a lot on this from experience, but you will surely get good advice here on that from a vet.

Edit: Gear Merchants:

You can find everything you need to be properly geared up from the Rowena Vendors found in the "B" town of each expansion. (The city/town that doesn't have a marketboard...without spoiling). The Tomestones of Poetics are all you need. The easiest way to get Tomestones is to run the 50 alliance raids for a small daily boost and lots of XP on a non-main job.

Generally speaking, if you have augmented end-expansion gear that you can buy with poetics... you wear that until level X6. Then maybe buy a weapon (maybe!). That takes you to X0. Then rinse and repeat until you hit 90.

Gear only matters if you wanna do Savage/Ultimate. For most other things it gets scaled down anyway.

At the cost of everything else. Nothing to do in WoW if you don't do M+, Hardcore Raiding, or Arena. Blizzard abandoned the rest of the game.

The gear differences are insane too.

Like, current season. Characters geared out easily have 2 to 3, or even 4 times as much health as player wearing top gear from last season. It's insane how bloated numbers already are. Blizzard is going to have to do another stat squish next expansion as they never learn and keep repeating the same mistakes.
