Open Letter to the development Team.

Dear Developers. While your doing a wonderful job with the game I would love to point out something that have made me giggle a lot through out the years.
If you take down the servers to apply a patch it is NOT a HOT fix. A hot fix is done on the run with no down time (other then a quick reset usually around 15 minutes) If you take the down the servers it ceases to be a hot fix. In fact the term can be traced back to Steam engine engineers that sometimes had to work on they engines while they were running hence HOT.. It have since been picked up in Software slang as well and here is the definition of it.
"A hotfix is a change made to the program deemed critical enough that it cannot be held off until a regular content patch. Hotfixes require only a server-side change with no download and can be implemented with no downtime, or a short restart of the realms."

Nah, we have hotfixes ourselves that require server downtime, the term hotfix has no bearing whether it requires servers to cycled hot or a full downtime required. Hotfix is a traditional term for a quick-fix engineering update (QFE), it's made outside of the normal versioning process to fix X issue(s) immediately based on current production code, not the next development. Hence why the version number doesn't go up on the client.

I want a hotfix of the moderation of these forums.

"A hotfix or quick-fix engineering update (QFE update) is a single, cumulative package that includes information (often in the form of one or more files) that is used to address a problem in a software product (i.e., a software bug). Typically, hotfixes are made to address a specific customer situation."

Or the definition from Oxford Languages: "a small piece of code developed to correct a major software bug or fault and released as quickly as possible."

The definition you still have in mind is outdated and that makes me giggle. Also you don't know if the systems aren't still running, just cause you don't have access to the servers atm doesn't mean they are shut down for maintenance.

Edit: I do however really like the fact, makes me giggle too, that you get your definition from Wowpedia. Which refers to the hotfixes that Blizzard makes on their game. WHICH IS NOT THE STANDARD DEFINITION FOR THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY. But it does make for a good giggle, yeah!

I seem to recall that Blizzard developed that meaning for "hotfix" after several years. At one point they discovered they could change how an action or item worked in game without taking down the servers or applying a client side patch. They would then warn players that the way things work may not correspond to their descriptions until a patch could be applied.

This. Just means it's a fix outside of the larger release schedule.

If you like OPs definition of hotfixes so much go play WoW, that's where it comes from. No need to stay here if there are greener pastures for you!

Hot fix is all from something that can be fixed when the server is live and running and sometimes it requires a restart, so people can't keep using eg. an exploit.

Literally every live service dev uses hotfix the same way: applying a update without downtime / just a quick server restart. Obviously if you only played FF14 for the past 10 years you wouldnt know that.

Dont mind Ranaku I think the few years they had in FF made them lose the remaining few braincells they had, when I said that the maintenance times were terrible, they also responded to me "just play wow since it's better" even tho I hadnt even mentioned wow

As far as I can tell Square hasn't done a proper hotfix since Patch 6.1. This is because every hotfix is missing something specific, something special... something very obvious... (obviously...)

Hotfix has always been used to describe an urgent fix in online games even though it involves fully resetting the servers a lot of the time. The point of the term is that it's an emergency fix that they don't want to leave until the next major patch, not that it only lasts 15 minutes.

Even by the definition you provided, a "quick" restart of the realms could take a few hours because it's an MMORPG, not pacman.

Name a current year MMO that takes "hours" for a server restart. WoW server restart takes like 10-15 minutes. Warframe (if you wanna count it) takes a couple minute and you can even stay online if you are in a mission. GW2 doesnt even restart their servers for updates.

Oh they will. I now fully believe that group of people will never change. It's a pity really for them to be so sad. However that's the life they choose. At this point I don't really interact with them. I just let them shout at the wall.

Another example of arm chair dev'n without out knowing a thing about the server infrastructure. God loves ignorance...

Why does it matter what it's called? Server's down for a patch; time's listed in the announcement.

I just dont understand why are we now getting people somehow warrant to complain for the game taking a few hours to do their fixes when there's little retention content to warrant having to log in for the day.

Where are you finding this content that you feel like complaining about SE intruding on your "precious gaming time"?
Why does this ultimately matter when there's legit reasons why they do it? Are you so childish to think they do maintenance/hot fixes or what have you, just to spite you personally? Are you this tone deaf and childish to arrive to this conclusion?

Yeah Im sure FFXIV and WoW run in the same engine btw, I'm sure the coding and engineering all works the same. I'm sure OP and Stormpeaks know more of technical maintenance than the development team themselves.
